Cricketing great MacGill returns to court as he waits to learn his fate
Cricketing great MacGill returns to court as he waits to learn his fate
Cricketing great Stuart MacGill will return to court on Friday as he gets set to learn whether he will be jailed over his role in facilitating a ******** deal between a man and a street-level dealer.
MacGill was found guilty by a District Court jury of helping to set up, and being present at, a meeting between the man and a street-level drug dealer, who can only be known as Person A, underneath his Neutral Bay restaurant in April 2021.
MacGill had claimed he simply introduced the two men and played no part in a later drug deal.
During his trial, the crown alleged that Person A – who was MacGill’s regular ******** dealer – and the other man – came to an agreement to exchange $330,000 for 1kg of ********.
MacGill told the court he regularly purchased half a gram of ******** from Person A for $200. And in April 2021, MacGill complained to Person A about the quality of his product while telling him that the man could “get good gear”, the court was told.
Crown prosecutor Gabrielle Steedman told the court that MacGill had acted as a go-between before setting up a meeting between the pair underneath Aristotle’s restaurant, which MacGill ran with his partner Maria O’Meagher.
Ms O’Meagher is not accused of any wrongdoing.

According to the crown case, MacGill stood metres away during the meeting.
It was not alleged that MacGill was present when the drug exchange later took place in a park in Ashfield.
MacGill was in March found guilty by a jury of one count of taking part in the supply of a prohibited drug.
He was found not guilty of the more serious charge of taking part in the supply of a large commercial quantity of a prohibited drug, but still faces the prospect of being jailed.

MacGill has been on bail since the guilty verdict and will appear in the Downing Centre District Court on Friday for a sentence hearing.
He is not expected to be sentenced on Friday, with both his defence and the crown prosecution to make submissions on what his sentence should be.
He is likely to be sentenced at a later date.
During his evidence during the eight-day trial, MacGill denied introducing the pair for the purposes of a large-scale drug deal.

He said he was only briefly present during the meeting to introduce them before leaving.
Under cross examination, MacGill was asked about his motivation for introducing the two men and he was asked what he thought they had in common.
“Drugs. Full stop,” MacGill replied.
However, the jury rejected his version of events as he was found guilty.

Elite athletes curb water intake after 4 p.m. — a top nutritionist explains why you should consider it too
Elite athletes curb water intake after 4 p.m. — a top nutritionist explains why you should consider it too
Good hydration can improve your energy, mood, and focus, but timing is important.
An elite sports nutritionist explains how much water you need, and when to drink it.
Look for three key signs of dehydration, and eat more hydrating foods with electrolytes.
Hydration plays a huge role in performance, mental focus, physical stamina, and recovery. That’s true whether you’re an NBA star or a weekend warrior.
The pros have mastered the art of optimal hydration, according to Matt Jones, a sports nutritionist who advises supplement brand Cadence and worked with the Boston Celtics during their 2024 NBA Championship-winning season.
“It’s those routines that allow them to perform to the best of their ability, because ultimately the most important thing with any nutrition intervention is the consistency part,” he told Business Insider.
After years of experience coaching elite athletes and military professionals, Jones has 5 key tips to get enough water and electrolytes for better focus and energy throughout the day.
Use a three-part test for dehydration
Drinking enough water is crucial to keeping your brain and body performing well in the office or on the basketball court, according to Jones.
“It can impact your mood, your decision making, it can impact the way you just go about your normal life,” he said.
A key part of his job is being able to tell whether athletes need to drink more water, which he does using a gold standard test. You can use the three steps to see if if you’re dehydrated:
Waking up thirsty. You can lose fluids overnight, so morning thirst is a good sign to start drinking water.
Daily weight changes. Slight changes in your daily weight are normal, but if decreases by 1% or more overnight, you could be low on fluids.
Dark ******. Normal ****** is pale or transparent yellow, so a color closer to amber can indicate dehydration.
How much water you should drink in a day?
Jones said the gold standard recommendation is one milliliter to 1.5 milliliters per calorie of energy expenditure.
For example, a person who burns through 2,000 calories a day would need about two liters or eight cups of water per day — the advice you probably heard as a kid.
If you have higher calorie needs because you’re more active or weigh more, your hydration needs will be proportionally higher.
Drink most of your water by 4 p.m.
Being well-hydrated can backfire if you drink water too late, since frequent bathroom trips disrupt your sleep.
Jones said the solution for his athletes, including the Celtics, is to drink 80% of their fluids for the day before 4:00 p.m, so their bodies have time to process all that liquid before bedtime.
Hydrate with fruit, coffee, and tea
Plain water is your first priority for hydration and a healthier choice than sugary juice or soda, but other drinks and even foods can count toward your daily total.
For instance, your daily morning coffee can help keep you hydrated. It’s best in moderation to avoid the side effects of excess caffeine.
“Caffeine itself can be a diuretic, but when consumed in the form of coffee or tea, the net effect is a net gain in fluid,” Jones said.
Hydrating foods like fruits and veggies also provide electrolytes to regulate the fluids in your body.
We need sodium, or salt, but most of us probably get enough in our diets already. Jones said it’s better to focus on getting the right amount of potassium for balance and to offset the side effects of too much sodium, like high blood pressure.
Good sources of potassium include bananas, avocado, coconut water, pomegranate, and watermelon.
Start drinking before you’re thirsty
It’s ok to sip water when you feel like it during the work day, but if you wait until you’re thirsty during a sweaty workout, you’ll already be dehydrated.
“During intense exercise, particularly in warm environments, thirst is not a good indicator of hydration status,” Jones said. “People are often chasing their tails a little bit.”
You can calculate your sweat rate to estimate just how much water you need to replace during exercise, like Jones does with the pros.
Prevent a dip in performance by drinking water at regular intervals.
“The first priority as soon as your big toe hits planet earth in the morning is to rehydrate,” he said.

Pinterest Q1 earnings report 2025
Pinterest Q1 earnings report 2025
Bill Ready, CEO of Pinterest, rings the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange on May 15, 2024.
Brendan McDermid | Reuters
Pinterest shares rose 10% in extended trading Thursday after the company reported first-quarter earnings and provided better-than-expected guidance.
Here’s how the company did, compared to analysts’ consensus estimates from LSEG:
Revenue: $855 million vs. $847 million expectedEarnings per share: $0.23 cents Adj. vs. $0.26 cents expected
The social media company said second-quarter sales should come in the range of $960 million to $980 million, which at the midpoint is higher than analysts expectations of $966 million.
Pinterest had 570 million monthly active users in the first quarter, ahead of Wall Street estimates of 565 million.
First quarter sales stemming from the U.S. and Canada came in at $663 million, missing analysts estimates of $664 million. Its first-quarter Europe revenue was $147 million, topping analysts projections of $141 million.
Pinterest logged $172 million in first quarter adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or EBIDTA, which was higher than the $164 million that Wall Street was expecting. First quarter EBIDTA margin was 20% compared to analysts expectations of 19.4%.
The company recorded $1.52 in first quarter global average revenue per user, which was in line with analysts estimates.
“As the macroeconomic and digital ad landscape evolves, our strategy and consistent execution has made Pinterest more resilient than ever,” Pinterest CEO Bill Ready said in a statement. “The fundamentals in the business are strong and we’re continuing to see healthy growth.”
Pinterest was the latest online advertising company to report quarterly earnings amid a rocky economy and an ongoing U.S. and China trade dispute. Although many tech companies like Meta reported solid first-quarter results, they shared some trepidation about the coming quarters and rest of the year.
Meta finance chief Susan Li last week said that “Asia-based e-commerce exporters” have slashed their digital advertising spending in light of the recent ending of the de minimis trade loophole.
“It’s very early, hard to know how things will play out over the quarter, and certainly, harder to know that for the rest of the year,” Li said on Meta’s earnings call.
Reddit shares jumped as high as 19% last Thursday when the company reported first-quarter earnings that beat Wall Street estimates. But after executives discussed the tough economy and Google-related search challenges during an earnings call, Reddit’s receded to around 5% in after-hours trading that day.
Snap reported first-quarter earnings last week that beat on sales, but the company declined to provide guidance because of macroeconomic uncertainties, which caused its stock to sink about 13%.
Alphabet reported first-quarter earnings on Apr. 24 and said that its Google advertising sales rose 8.5% year over year to $66.89 billion while YouTube ad revenue increased 10% to $8.93 billion. Executives at the company then told analysts that it expects some headwinds to its core advertising business, particularly from Asia.

Affirm, the provider of buy now, pay later loans, gave a revenue forecast for the current quarter that trailed analysts’ estimates even as profit for the prior quarter was better than expected. The stock fell 10% in extended trading on Thursday.
Here’s how the company did, compared to analysts’ consensus estimates from LSEG:
Earnings per share: 1 cent vs. an expected loss of 3 cents
Revenue: $783 million vs. $783 million expected
Affirm reported gross merchandise volume, or GMV, of $8.6 billion, topping the average estimate of $8.2 billion, according to StreetAccount. GMV, a key metric that helps gauge the total value of transactions, increased 36% from a year earlier.
Revenue in the quarter rose 36% from $576 million a year ago. The company’s key margin metric — revenue less transaction costs, or RLTC —came in at 4.1%, slightly above its long-term target range of 3% to 4%.
Adjusted operating margin was 22%, compared to StreetAccount’s estimate of 21.6%.
For the current quarter, Affirm is guiding for revenue between $815 million and $845 million — with a midpoint of $830 million, below the average estimate of $841 million, according to LSEG.
Affirm’s business is closely tied to consumer spending, as its online loan offering has become popular with sellers of electronics, apparel and travel. The U.S. economy contracted in the first three months of 2025 on an import surge at the start of President Donald Trump’s second term in office, as companies and consumers sought to get ahead of the Trump tariffs implemented in early April.
Don’t miss these insights from CNBC PRO
As CNBC reported late last month, citing first-quarter results from credit card lenders, lower-income earners are reining in their transactions to focus on essentials, while the wealthy continue to spend on high-priced meals and and luxury travel.
Affirm is forecasting fourth-quarter GMV between $9.4 billion and $9.7 billion, with a midpoint of $9.55 billion, above StreetAccount’s estimate of $9.2 billion. Adjusted operating margin is expected between 23% and 25%, compared to the 23.8% StreetAccount estimate.
Affirm reiterated its commitment to achieving profitability on a GAAP basis by the end of its fiscal fourth quarter in 2025. Affirm’s active consumer base increased to 22 million, including 2 million new to Affirm consumers.
The Affirm Card, which is the company’s big bet for driving greater usage overall, saw GMV rise 115% from a year earlier, and the number of active cardholders more than doubled.
The company’s partnerships with Apple, Amazon and Shopify continue to drive momentum. In June, Affirm and Apple announced plans for U.S. Apple Pay users on iPhones and iPads to be able to apply for loans directly through Affirm.
Earlier this week, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau said it will stop enforcing a Biden-era rule that complicated compliance for BNPL providers, in what was largely viewed as a win for lenders like Affirm.
The quarter saw a notable rise in 0% interest loans, a strategy in which merchants — and sometimes manufacturers — subsidize borrowing costs to drive sales. That marked a 44% increase from a year earlier. Meanwhile, credit quality held steady, with losses below 1% in the company’s core offering that allows users to repay loans in four installments.
Affirm shares are down 11% for the year, excluding the after-hours move, while the Nasdaq has fallen abut 7%.

5 Takeaways From the U.S.-U.K. Trade Agreement
5 Takeaways From the U.S.-U.K. Trade Agreement
The United States and Britain announced on Thursday that they had reached a deal that would reduce tariffs on some imports, such as steel, cars and ethanol, and deepen the economic relationship between the two countries.
There was plenty of mutual congratulating between President Trump in the Oval Office and Keir Starmer, the British prime minister, who dialed in on a speakerphone. “This is a really fantastic, historic day,” Mr. Starmer said.
As the dust settled, though, it became clearer that this was just a framework for a deal and there could be weeks, if not more, of additional negotiations before it became final. Here’s what we know.
It’s the first trade deal since Trump ramped up tariffs.
Mr. Trump’s rewriting of the global trade playbook shocked financial markets, and his administration has been under pressure to reach deals to reduce uncertainty. Mr. Trump said that this deal would be the first of many.
The Trump administration said it would open up export opportunities worth $5 billion for American businesses, while also bringing in $6 billion in tariff revenue.
But Mr. Trump said the final details were still being written up, and British officials said negotiators would continue to try to reduce tariffs not included in this deal.
It’s a narrowly focused deal.
The agreement will come as a huge relief for Britain’s auto industry, which will now face 10 percent tariffs on the first 100,000 cars exported annually to the United States. Britain sent 92,000 vehicles to the United States in 2024, according to data from Oxford Economics.
British officials warned that the higher tariffs, which were about 25 percent, had endangered jobs in the country’s car industry, which sent more than a quarter of its auto exports to the United States.
Britain will also be excluded from tariffs on steel and aluminum. In exchange, it increased the quota on beef imports from the United States and said it would remove a tariff on ethanol, which is used in manufacturing.
Britain said that it would receive “preferential treatment” if any further sectoral tariffs were introduced, such as on pharmaceuticals.
The two countries also have a “high-level” agreement on economic security and would work on building a deeper partnership on technology that would cover life sciences, quantum computing, biotech and other sectors.
There are still open questions.
This deal is not final, and neither side said when it could take effect. The British government said it was still negotiating to bring down the 10 percent tariff on most other goods.
Jonathan Reynolds, Britain’s business and trade secretary, said it was a “landmark breakthrough” but that it only reached the “general terms” that will set out the process for more tariff negotiations.
The British government can declare a victory.
The deal could be derailed before it takes effect. For now, however, it puts Britain in a better position than it was in a few weeks ago. The country’s auto and steel industries were already struggling, so any efforts to shore up their ability to export to the United States, an important market, are welcome.
Also, the agreement so far has not caused Britain to cross its red lines about lowering its auto or food safety standards, which would have impeded a deal with the European Union. Britain did not reduce its own tariffs on cars, as some reports had suggested. Nor did it make any changes to its digital services tax, which the Trump administration had said unfairly harmed American tech giants. That tax was introduced in 2020 as a 2 percent duty on revenues of search engines, social media services and online marketplaces, and most of the revenue has come from big American firms like Amazon and Google.
The Trump administration also scored a win, earning praise from American ranchers to increase exports of beef, though they would still have to be free of hormones. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association called it a “tremendous win.”
But it’s not an economic game changer.
Despite the agreement, British goods exports in general still face higher tariffs then they did two months ago, with the base line 10 percent tariff still in place.
And Britain’s trading relationship with the United States is heavily skewed toward services, which are not affected by tariffs. Many economists have cautioned that even with a deal, Britain’s economy is vulnerable to global economic uncertainty.
Reducing that uncertainty would require the Trump administration to secure more deals with other countries and make trade policy more predictable.
Ana Swanson contributed reporting from Washington.

Palantir joins top 10 most valuable tech companies, stock at premium
Palantir joins top 10 most valuable tech companies, stock at premium
Palantir Technologies CEO Alex Karp appears on a Bloomberg television interview during the FoundryCon event in Palo Alto, California, on March 7, 2024.

There’s a new member in the list of the top 10 U.S. technology companies by market cap.
Data analytics software vendor Palantir jumped about 8% on Thursday, bringing its valuation to $281 billion. That puts it ahead of Salesforce, which closed at a $268 billion and had previously been ranked tenth. Palantir surpassed legacy tech giants Cisco and IBM earlier this year.
Microsoft tops the market cap list at $3.3 trillion, followed by Apple and Nvidia.
Palantir’s induction follows a dramatic rally in the stock price, which has more than quintupled in value over the last year. The shares have jumped 58% in 2025, positioning Palantir to be the top S&P 500 performer for a second year. The stock has been a major outlier in recent months, continuing to pop while its tech peers have been weighed down by tariff uncertainty and fears of an economic slowdown.
The Nasdaq is down 7% this year even after bouncing back some over the past three weeks.
Palantir, founded in 2003 by a group that included Peter Thiel, the company’s chairman, and CEO Alex Karp, has benefitted from a booming government business, which grew 45% to $373 million last quarter. That includes a $178 million contract to build artificial intelligence-enabled systems for the U.S. Army.
In an aminated shareholder letter attached to the company’s earnings report, Karp applauded his company’s controversial defense business and suggested that some former critics in Silicon Valley have “turned a corner and begun following our lead.”
“We note only that our commitment to building software for the U.S. military, those whom we have asked to step into harm’s way, remains steadfast, when such a commitment is fashionable and convenient and when it is not,” Karp wrote.
Stock Chart IconStock chart icon
Palantir vs. the Nasdaq this year
But investors who want in on the action have to pay up, because while Palantir has joined the top tech ranks by market cap, it’s a far smaller company in terms of sales and profit. Salesforce, the cloud software company that it just leapfrogged, generated over 10 times more revenue than Palantir in the past year, and is expected to do so again over the next four quarters.
That all means Palantir has multiples that are much higher than its large-cap tech peers. Palantir currently trades for 520 times trailing earnings, almost 200 times forward earnings, and 90 times revenue.
“Fundamentals are clearly alive, but we think irrational valuation,” wrote Brent Thill, an analyst at Jefferies, in a note on May 6. He has the equivalent of a sell rating on the stock.
Among the 10 other top tech names, including Salesforce, the average trailing price-to-earnings multiple is about 58, and it’s only that high because Broadcom and Tesla are both around 160. For forward earnings, the average multiple is roughly 37.5, inflated by Tesla’s 137 figure. And for revenue, the average multiple is 10.2, with Nvidia carrying the highest premium at 22.
Palantir shares slumped more than 12% on Tuesday following first-quarter results. The company topped revenue estimates but showed a deceleration in international commercial sales that spooked some investors. Accelerating growth expectations have also left the company with a high bar to clear.
“You don’t have to buy our shares,” Karp told CNBC’s Brian Sullivan on Wednesday. “We’re happy. We’re going to partner with the world’s best people and we’re going to dominate. You can be along for the ride or you don’t have to be.”

India has accused Pakistan of attacking three of its military bases with drones and missiles, a claim which has been denied by Islamabad.
The Indian Army said it had foiled Pakistan’s attempts to attack its bases in Jammu and Udhampur, in Indian-administered Kashmir, and Pathankot, in India’s Punjab state.
Blasts were reported on Thursday evening in Jammu city in Indian-administered Kashmir as the region went into a blackout.
Pakistan’s defence minister told the BBC they were not behind the attack.
“We deny it, we have not mounted anything so far,” Khawaja Asif told the BBC, adding: “We will not strike and then deny”.

Blasts were reported in the city of Jammu which went into a ******-out
Earlier on Thursday, India said it had struck Pakistan’s air defences and “neutralised” Islamabad’s attempts to hit military targets in India on Wednesday night.
Pakistan called that action another “act of aggression”, following Indian missile strikes on Wednesday on targets in Pakistan and Pakistani-administered Kashmir.
India’s strikes on Wednesday sparked a chorus of calls for de-escalation from the international community with the UN and world leaders calling for calm.
The attacks and incidents of shelling along the border have fanned fears of wider conflict erupting between the nuclear-armed states.
It is being viewed as the worst confrontation between the two countries in more than two decades.
India said it hit nine “terrorist infrastructure” sites on Wednesday in retaliation for a militant attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir last month.
Pakistan has strongly denied Indian claims that it backed the militants who killed 26 civilians in the mountainous town of Pahalgam.
It was the bloodiest attack on civilians in the region for years, sending tensions soaring. Most of the victims were Indian tourists.
Indian-administered Kashmir has seen a decades-long insurgency against Indian rule which has claimed thousands of lives.
Kashmir has been a flashpoint between the countries since they became independent after British India was partitioned in 1947. Both claim Kashmir and have fought two wars over it.

Locals in border areas have had to be evacuated due to the cross-border shelling – here women and children arrive at a shelter near Jammu
There were calls for restraint from around the world after India launched “Operation Sindoor” early on Wednesday.
But on Thursday both sides accused each other of further military action.
Pakistan’s military spokesman said drones sent by India had been engaged in multiple locations.
“Last night, India showed another act of aggression by sending drones to multiple locations,” Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said. “These locations are Lahore, Gujranwala, Chakwal, Rawalpindi, Attock, Bahawalpur, Miano, Chor and near Karachi.”
He said one civilian had been killed in Sindh province and four troops injured in Lahore.
The US consulate in Lahore told its staff to shelter in the building.
India said its latest action had been taken in response to Pakistan’s attempts to “engage a number of military targets in northern and western India” overnight.
“It has been reliably learnt that an Air Defence system at Lahore has been neutralised,” a Defence Ministry statement said. Pakistan denied the claim.
There was no independent confirmation of the two countries’ versions of events.
Later in the day India’s foreign secretary Vikram Misri told a news conference in Delhi: “Our intention has not been to escalate matters, we are only responding to the original escalation.”
Meanwhile, casualty numbers continue to rise. Pakistan says 31 people have been killed and 57 injured by Indian air strikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, and firing along the Line of Control, since Wednesday morning.
India’s army said the number of people killed by Pakistani firing in the disputed Kashmir region had risen to 16, including three women and five children.
India initially did not name any group it believed was behind the attack in Pahalgam but on 7 May it accused the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group of carrying it out.
Indian police have alleged that two of the attackers were Pakistani nationals, a claim denied by Islamabad. It says it has nothing to do with the 22 April attacks.
In a late-night address on Wednesday, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowed to avenge those killed in India’s strikes.
He repeated Pakistan’s claim that it had shot down five Indian fighter jets, saying that was a “crushing response”. India has not commented on that claim.
Following the reports of Thursday’s explosions in Jammu, local media cited Indian military sources on Thursday in reporting that blasts across the Jammu region were also reported in the towns of Akhnoor, Samba and Kathua.

Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut Is Getting A 4K Collector’s Edition Blu-Ray
Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut Is Getting A 4K Collector’s Edition Blu-Ray
Alexander didn’t earn much praise when it hit theaters in 2004. Directed by Oliver Stone (Platoon, Natural Born Killers) and starring big names like Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie, Val Kilmer, and Anthony Hopkins, the star-studded cast wasn’t enough to save it from mediocre reviews. However, the film has been given multiple second chances, with a Director’s Cut released in 2005, a Final Cut in 2007, and an Ultimate Cut in 2014, which helped breathe new life into the film, turning it into a cult classic. The latest version, Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut 4K Collector’s Edition, is getting a new 4K Blu-ray edition that will launch on July 1. This will be the first time this version of the movie is available on 4K Blu-ray, and it includes a selection of all-new bonus features. Preorders are now available at Amazon.
$40 | Releases July 1
The Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut Collector’s Edition includes a new 4K restoration of Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut that was supervised and approved by director Oliver Stone. Clocking in at 213 minutes, the Final Cut features over 30 minutes of footage not included in the original film. That’s an astronomical runtime, so don’t be surprised if you have to break it up into multiple viewings. The 4K Blu-ray also supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and includes a long list of special features, which we’ve outlined below. A standard Blu-ray version of the movie is also included.
Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut Collector’s Edition Bonus Features
Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut 4K Blu-ray is packed with over three hours of bonus features, including a new audio commentary and multiple interviews that are exclusive to this new release. Most of these are presented in 1080p, though some are available in 4K. Here’s a look at what you’ll find (items in bold are new to this 4K Blu-ray edition):
Audio commentary with critic Matt Zoller Seitz (4K)
Audio commentary with Oliver Stone (4K)
Interview with Oliver Stone
Interview with editor Alex Marquez

Alexander tells the story of Alexander the Great. Set in 4th Century BC, it follows the conqueror’s rise to power, examining his childhood, historic battles, and eventual defeat. It’s a sweeping epic, and one that grew a bit more popular with the Final Cut and its additional scenes.
It’s worth noting that a standard edition version of Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut launched earlier and is available now for just $15.85, though it lacks many of the bonus features of the upcoming 4K version. Other versions are also on *****, including Alexander: The Ultimate Cut for $13.14 (was $20), which is a bit shorter than the Final Cut.
If you’re a fan of historical epics and Greco-Roman history, you might also want to check out the new Gladiator and Gladiator 2 4K Steelbook releases that are available now, including a Gladiator 2-Movie Steelbook Collection that launched May 6 and bundles the 4K editions of both movies in a single package.

Pinterest’s new AI tools help you shop by visuals and vibes
Pinterest’s new AI tools help you shop by visuals and vibes
Pinterest has debuted a set of new AI-powered visual search tools
The AI tools enable users to explore fashion by vibe, mood, or aesthetic
The results are aimed at helping produce personalized shopping ideas
Pinterest has always been about visuals over text. Now, with the help of AI, you can figure out how to describe those visual inspirations and even get a chance to buy your favorite items, starting with women’s fashion.
A growing number of Pins on Pinterest will have specific pieces of an outfit or aesthetic highlighted with a shimmering animated glow. Click on, say, the plaid skirt or the blue jacket, and Pinterest will show you some of the words to describe the item and help you find more like it without you needing a fashion dictionary.
Pinterest is using generative AI and Visual Language Models (VLMs) for the new features. The VLMs essentially translate images into searchable terms, decoding your taste from an image and helping you shop for it. It’s like a more nuanced reverse image search tool, one that can converse with you about your interest in vivid tones and stereopunk plaid.
You may like
You’re not expected to describe your dream outfit with perfect vocabulary. You’re not expected to know what kind of tailoring makes a jacket “structured casual.” You just have to know that you liked that one look for its vibe. Pinterest takes it from there.
“Our visual search technology represents a shift in how users interact with and discover inspiration,” Pinterest vice president of design Dana Cho said in a statement. “We’re not simply delivering search results – we’re curating a personalized journey of discovery that empowers individuals to find their unique style, and shop it too.”
Pin AI
There are other new AI features as well, including a new refinement bar that lets you tweak results on the fly. For instance, if you like a look but want to change its color or styling, you can use the refinement bar to filter for them or other elements like fabric.
And if you spot something you want to use to start a visual search from within the app, you just need to long-press on it. Pinterest says it plans to expand the AI tools beyond women’s fashion eventually, but it makes sense that it would start there when it’s such a major facet of the platform.
Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.
Pinterest’s new tools don’t mean it’s entirely trusting of AI. The company has also begun adding new labels for AI-modified or AI-generated images and giving users the option to see fewer of them via topic filters. It’s a small but smart nod to the fact that inspiration is great, but that reality still matters when you’re shopping for actual clothing.
Still, it’s an interesting approach to online shopping, and one that fits the way people shop in person by looking at clothes, not just describing them. The AI is like a personal shopper who understands most people rely on visual impressions and gut feelings to decide what to buy, rather than knowing stitch patterns and trend terms.

Trump’s Justice Department launches criminal probe into Letitia James, multiple sources say
Trump’s Justice Department launches criminal probe into Letitia James, multiple sources say
More than a year after New York Attorney General Letitia James won a half-billion dollar civil fraud case against President Trump, the Justice Department under Mr. Trump has launched a criminal fraud probe targeting James, multiple sources familiar with the investigation told CBS News.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation.
U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of New York John A. Sarcone III told the Albany Times-Union that the investigation was “being handled at this time by main [Department of] Justice and the Albany FBI field office.”
A Justice Department spokesperson declined to comment.
The investigation began after William Pulte, director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, wrote a letter to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, alleging that James “has, in multiple instances, falsified bank documents and property records to acquire government backed assistance and loans and more favorable loan terms.”
Pulte claimed James received deals on mortgage terms by falsifying information related to multiple properties, over the course of decades. The allegations include listing a home in Norfolk, Virginia as her “principal residence” despite living and working in New York, buying a five-family property in Brooklyn with a loan that is only available for homes with four units or less, and an accusation that, in 1983, James’ father signed mortgage documents stating they were husband and wife.
James has denied the allegations, calling them “baseless.” James’ office on Thursday declined to comment.
Abbe Lowell — an attorney for James whose firm frequently represents clients that it believes have been unfairly targeted by the Trump administration — has also derided the investigation.
In a statement to CBS News, Lowell called the allegations “baseless and long-discredited” and said that the investigation “appears to be the political retribution President Trump threatened to exact that AG Bondi assured the Senate would not occur on her watch. If prosecutors are genuinely interested in the truth, we are prepared to meet false claims with facts.”
Last month, Lowell sent a letter to the Department of Justice refuting the allegations laid out in Pulte’s letter. In a letter to Bondi, Lowell called the allegations “long-disproven” and the investigation, “the latest act of improper political retribution — this time directed at Ms. James — publicly instigated and endorsed by President Trump.”
In February 2024, a New York judge ordered Mr. Trump, his company and two of his adult sons to pay the State of New York about $364 million. The figure, with interest accumulated over more than a decade, currently totals more than $500 million. Trump has appealed the ruling.
The ruling came after a lengthy civil trial in which James’ office accused Mr. Trump of spearheading an effort to use fraudulent property valuations and estimates of Mr. Trump’s net worth to obtain favorable loan rates and insurance deals he wouldn’t otherwise have gotten received.
The figure Mr. Trump was ordered to pay reflected the judge’s calculation of how much Mr. Trump and his company benefited through the scheme.
Mr. Trump has long raged against the case, and James — even suing her unsuccessfully in an effort to stop her fraud investigation before a suit could be filed by the state.
Mr. Trump was forced to take the stand in November 2023 during the trial, lashing out at James during his hourslong testimony, and calling the fraud case “a terrible, terrible thing.”

Itoje: the Lion king who’s proved Eddie Jones wrong
Itoje: the Lion king who’s proved Eddie Jones wrong
Eddie Jones once famously wrote of Maro Itoje: “I might be wrong but I am not sure Maro is a future England captain.”
Not for the first time, Australia’s then England coach, who never felt the brilliant lock could be trusted as captain material, really did get it wrong.
For not only has the 30-year-old Itoje gone on to lead England with distinction, he’s now the man the British & Irish Lions have chosen to inspire them to victory over the Wallabies this winter.
“A special man,” coach Andy Farrell called Itoje at the team announcement in London on Thursday.
The criticism from Jones of Itoje was that was “too inward looking” and “doesn’t usually influence people off the field.”
Itoje evidently felt it quite a hurtful suggestion and has since hit back by suggesting: “I felt that was a wrong diagnosis of who I am.
“Most people who know me, most people who read those comments who knew me, would say that was an inaccurate conclusion to who I am as a person.
“I guess it was unfortunate that your coach would say something like that about you but in life not everyone is going to see the things that way you see it.”
Lions’ coach Andy Farrell certainly believes he’s got the right man for the job as he explained on Thursday how his team leader in Australia needed to be “a special person”.
And despite Jones’s assertion, Itoje, the Lions’ first ****** captain, has indeed been a groundbreaking leader from his early days in the sport, leading the England Under-20s to Junior World Cup triumph in 2014 all the way to now spearheading top English club Saracens.
“I’m deeply honoured, humbled and I’ll do my best to do the role justice. I’m very much looking forward to the challenge ahead, it’s going to be a great tour,” said Itoje, whose path to the job was cleared when Ireland skipper Caelan Doris injured his shoulder at the weekend, ruling him out of the entire tour.
“As you can imagine, Caelan’s devastated,” reported Farrell.
Itoje dined in London on Wednesday with past Lions captains and said their passion and appreciation shone through.
“It was amazing. It’s a brotherhood, it’s a unique club and to spend time with them, for them to show the love and care and appreciation they still have for the Lions. It was absolutely amazing to be a part of that.”

‘Attacking’ is the most consistent element
“‘Attacking’ is the most consistent element”
FromSoftware has never shied away from innovation, especially when it comes to the brutal beauty of its combat systems. With Elden Ring Nightreign, the studio is taking its first steps into a more co-op-driven, action-adventure experience, yet it still manages to surprise.
Among the most talked-about features following the game’s network test is its unusual revival mechanic. In a genre where reviving teammates usually means channeling healing spells or holding down buttons, Nightreign takes a different route entirely, it’s asking players to do what they do best: attack.
Elden Ring Nightreign comes with a revival system that breaks convention
In a recent interview with PlayStation Blog Japan, Game Director Junya Ishizaki explained the origins of this design. And also provided insight that Nightreign draws heavily on the foundational mechanics of Elden Ring, utilizing many of its assets and combat systems.
Rather than layering new systems on top of the old, the team looked inward, asking how they could repurpose existing gameplay elements in innovative ways. Given that attacking is an action all players engage in constantly, it naturally became the centerpiece of the game’s revival mechanic.
We realized that ‘attacking’ is the most consistent element of Nightreign’s gameplay. […] so we formally implemented it. We also found it quite amusing.
This single insight led the development team to experiment with a system where incapacitated teammates can be revived through offensive action: literally striking them back to life.
However, since we are talking about FromSoftware, this isn’t just a quirky twist for the sake of novelty. The revive-by-attack system introduces a surprising amount of tactical depth to co-op gameplay.
Because the system is governed by variables like weapon range, attack timing, and risk of enemy interference, every revival attempt becomes a strategic decision, one that might just shift the tide of battle.
Striking a balance between familiar, fresh, and a bit of chaos
It’s not just a gimmick, it’s as chaotic and tactical as you’d expect. | Image Credit: FromSoftware
While the revival system stems from a logical design choice, it also introduces an unpredictable energy to every co-op session. You’re not just attacking your enemies but also your fallen teammates.
This creates constant pressure and the risk of rushing in to save a fallen ally with a well-timed strike. It also creates natural tension, improvisation, and shared moments of triumph (or failure) that feel uniquely FromSoftware.
It’s this kind of thoughtful experimentation that signals Nightreign isn’t just a spin-off; it’s an evolution. By striking a careful balance between familiar gameplay and bold new systems, the developer invites players to explore a fresh layer of depth in a world they thought they already knew.
Though many might find it strange, it works, and perhaps more importantly, it fits. It’s a reminder that even in co-op play, Elden Ring’s DNA lives on: brutal, inventive, and unapologetically bold.
Elden Ring Nightreign launches May 30 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

What is 1000BASE-T (Gigabit Ethernet)?
What is 1000BASE-T (Gigabit Ethernet)?
1000BASE-T is a Gigabit Ethernet standard that operates at a speed of 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) over copper wiring. One Gb is equivalent to 1,000 megabits per second (Mbps). The standard uses four pairs of Category 5 (Cat5) or higher unshielded twisted pair (UTP) copper cables to achieve the gigabit data rate. The “T” in 1000BASE-T refers to twisted-pair cable. 1000BASE-T can also be referred to as 1000BaseT, GbE, 1 GigE or simply Gigabit.
The progression of Ethernet development from 1995 to 2020 and beyond
Understanding 1000BASE-T
1000BASE-T is the most common networking standard in use today. It quickly replaced older Ethernet standards — such as Ethernet (10BASE-T, 10 Mbps) and Fast Ethernet (100BASE-T, 100 Mbps) — as the de facto standard for network equipment. Its 1 Gbps speed can be achieved over these types of twisted-wire copper cables: Cat5, Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6e, Cat7 and Cat8.
Established in 1999, the IEEE standard 802.3ab defines 1000BASE-T. 802.3ab defined how Gigabit Ethernet transmission works over UTP Cat5, Cat5e and Cat6 copper cables:
1000 sets the transmission speed of 1,000 Mbps, or 1 Gbps.
BASE sets the standard as Ethernet baseband signaling, meaning it only carries Ethernet signals.
T sets the cable media type as twisted pair.
The various UTP categories as defined by data rate, maximum length, cable type and application
Where is 1000BASE-T used?
1000BASE-T is supported by almost all modern equipment, offering good enough performance for most common applications. Almost all networking equipment supports it on the access layer, although some backbone applications require a faster standard. Most home equipment produced in the last decade supports Gigabit Ethernet, enabling home users to enjoy the benefit of high-speed Ethernet in a cost-effective manner.
The Gigabit Ethernet standard can be used in data centers for server interconnects or network switch uplinks or be used directly with the desktop. It is also used for general server interconnects and for endpoint client connections.
Other applications of 1000BASE-T include the following:
What are the 1000BASE-T specifications?
1000BASE-T operates at 1 Gbps. It uses cheap and readily available cables that already existed for many applications. It uses four twisted pairs for both half-duplex (nonsimultaneous transmit and receive) and full-duplex communication (simultaneous transmit and receive).
The minimum standard for cabling is Cat5 cable. However, the standard is also readily compatible with all later standards, including Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6e, Cat7 and Cat8.
1000BASE-T maximum cable (segment) length is 100 meters (m), or about 328 feet. It uses the RJ45 connector and jack. RJ45, when properly crimped and attached securely, enables compatibility between 1000BASE-T and existing network infrastructure, which enhances data transmission without requiring major and costly infrastructure overhauls.
Automatic medium-dependent interface crossover is a standard feature for Gigabit Ethernet. This means that Gigabit ports can auto negotiate the transmit between 10 Mbps and 1000 Mbps and receive twisted pairs in the cable. The ports, therefore, do not need crossover cables, and dedicated upload ports on switches are largely redundant. The physical medium attachment sublayer can potentially correct for nonstandard or reversed cabling.
1000BASE-T cabling is also compatible with some faster standards. 2.5GBASE-T (2.5 Gbps) and 5GBASE-T (5 Gbps) Ethernet can use the same Cat5e and Cat6 cables as Gigabit Ethernet. Extremely fast 10GBASE-T (10 Gbps) is capable over Cat6e cables. These standards are interoperable and autonegotiated, enabling simple upgrade paths. This enables businesses and users to continue to use their existing wiring and increase available bandwidth with only relatively minor upgrades.
Gigabit Ethernet operates on Layer 1 of the Open Systems Interconnection model, which is the physical layer. Physical data communication occurs in this layer through physical channels, like copper cables and fiber optic cables.
Advantages and disadvantages of 1000BASE-T
One of the biggest advantages of 1000BASE-T is that it offers high data transfer speeds. However, it consumes more power than its predecessor technologies, which can adversely impact a data center’s energy efficiency. Also, as a wired standard, 1000BASE-T relies on copper cabling, offering limited mobility compared to wireless technologies, like Wi-Fi.
Another benefit of Gigabit Ethernet is that existing copper cabling can be used instead of having to rewire with optical fiber or newer-generation cables. It also supports Power over Ethernet, so many devices can receive power and data through a single cable. Thus, this technology provides a cost-effective way to upgrade the existing network infrastructure and support higher bandwidth requirements. For all these reasons, 1000BASE-T is a good Ethernet standard for today’s networking and data transmission requirements.
These advantages notwithstanding, Gigabit Ethernet does have some limitations. One major limitation is related to distance. The standard supports a maximum cable length of 100 m. While this length may be sufficient for smaller installations, it may be insufficient for larger or complex installations. Also, extending the cable length can result in signal degradation and errors, which can reduce performance and even lead to loss of connections.
1000BASE-T is backward-compatible with older standards — 10BASE-T and 100BASE-TX — so it can be easily integrated with existing network infrastructure. However, some older devices may not be able to negotiate the higher speeds, causing errors or slowdowns.
What are other Gigabit Ethernet standards?
Although the terms 1000BASE-T and Gigabit Ethernet are often used interchangeably, the Gigabit Ethernet standard also includes several other standards. These standards use different types of cables than 1000BASE-T. They can be broadly divided into ones using copper cable and ones using fiber optics.
Copper wire Gigabit Ethernet
1000BASE-T uses four pairs of Cat5 or later UTP cable with a maximum allowable cable length of 100 m.
1000BASE-TX uses two pairs of shielded twisted pair (STP) using Cat6 or Cat7 cables with a maximum allowable cable length of 100 m. It uses more expensive cables but less expensive electronics. It is no longer widely used.
1000BASE-CX uses two pairs of balanced 150 ohm STP cable with a maximum allowable cable length of 25 m. It uses a different connector than 1000BASE-T. It is still used in some specific data center applications.
Fiber optic Gigabit Ethernet
1000BASE-SX is a short laser wavelength on multimode fiber optic cable with a maximum allowable cable length of 550 m.
1000BASE-LX/LH/LX10 is a long wavelength for a long-haul fiber optic cable with a maximum allowable cable length of 10 kilometers (km).
1000BASE-ZX is an extended wavelength single-mode optical fiber for up to 100 km. It is not an IEEE standard, but is supported by many vendors.
The evolution of Ethernet over more than 30 years
Internet and Ethernet both serve to facilitate connectivity and communication, yet they possess distinctions in terms of scope, purpose, reliability and medium. To gain insight into these concepts, refer to this guide on the differences between internet and Ethernet.

Palantir Stock Is Soaring Today. Here’s Why.
Palantir Stock Is Soaring Today. Here’s Why.
President Trump announced that a trade deal has been reached with the U.K.
This marks the first deal of its kind after Trump announced sweeping tariffs in April.
Though the details were light, some of the language in the announcement indicates Palantir could benefit specifically.
10 stocks we like better than Palantir Technologies ›
Shares of Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) are surging on Thursday. The artificial intelligence (AI)-powered data analytics company’s stock gained 8.1% as of 1 p.m. ET and was up as much as 9% earlier in the day. The jump comes as the S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC) gained 1.5% and the Nasdaq Composite (NASDAQINDEX: ^IXIC) rose 2%.
The government-focused software provider is rallying after President Trump announced a trade agreement with the United Kingdom.
Palantir shares climbed as President Donald Trump unveiled the broad outline of a trade agreement with the United Kingdom. This is the first major deal his administration has been able to put together after Trump imposed sweeping tariffs in April.
While optimism was high following the announcement, it’s important to note that many specifics remain unclear, and nothing was formally signed. “The final details are being written up,” Trump said. “In the coming weeks, we’ll have it all very conclusive.”
While the news boosted stocks across the market, Palantir investors appeared especially optimistic, as some of the limited specifics mentioned could benefit the company specifically. The White House fact sheet released as part of the announcement mentions the deal will “close loopholes and increase U.S. firms’ competitiveness in the U.K.’s procurement market.” This could mean Palantir has an easier time winning new contracts with the U.K. government.

With a price-to-earnings ratio (P/E) of nearly 500, Palantir’s valuation is out of touch with reality. There is no doubt that the company is executing at a very high level, but with a valuation this high, a level of perfection is required that I don’t think is possible to sustain long term. I would stay away from Palantir stock.

India and Pakistan trade fire and accusations as fears of a wider military confrontation rise
India and Pakistan trade fire and accusations as fears of a wider military confrontation rise
India fired attack drones into Pakistan on Thursday, killing at least two civilians, the Pakistani military said. India, meanwhile, accused its neighbor of attempting its own attack, as tensions soared between the nuclear-armed rivals.
India acknowledged that it targeted Pakistan’s air defense system, and Islamabad said it shot down several of the drones. India said it “neutralized” Pakistan’s attempts to hit military targets. It was not possible to verify all of the claims.
The exchanges came a day after Indian missiles struck several locations in Pakistan, killing 31 civilians, according to Pakistani officials. New Delhi said it was retaliating after gunmen killed more than two dozen people, mostly Hindu tourists, in India-controlled Kashmir last month. India accused Pakistan of being behind the assault. Islamabad denies that.
Both sides have also traded heavy fire across their frontier in disputed Kashmir, and Pakistan claimed it killed scores of Indian soldiers. There was no confirmation from India.
Late Thursday in Indian-controlled Kashmir, residents of the city of Jammu reported hearing explosions and sirens. Shesh Paul Vaid, the region’s former director-general of police, said there was a complete blackout in Jammu following loud blasts. “Bombing, shelling, or missile strikes suspected,” he wrote on social media.
Jammu is close to the Line of Control, the de factor border that divides the Kashmir region between India and Pakistan.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowed to avenge the deaths in India’s missile strikes, raising fears that the two countries could be headed toward another all-out conflict. Leaders from both nations face mounting public pressure to show strength and seek revenge, and the heated rhetoric and competing claims could be a response to that pressure.
The relationship between countries has been shaped by conflict and mutual suspicion, most notably in their dispute over Kashmir. They have fought two of their three wars over the Himalayan region, which is split between them and claimed by both in its entirety.
With tensions high, India evacuated thousands of people from villages near the highly militarized frontier in the region. Tens of thousands of people slept in shelters overnight, officials and residents said Thursday.
About 2,000 villagers also fled their homes in Pakistani-administered Kashmir.
Mohammad Iftikhar boarded a vehicle with his family on Thursday as heavy rain lashed the region. “I am helplessly leaving my home for the safety of my children and wife,” he said.
India fires drones at Pakistan
India fired several Israeli-made Harop drones at Pakistan overnight and into Thursday afternoon, according to Pakistani army spokesman Lt. Gen. Ahmad Sharif, who said 29 were shot down. Two civilian were killed and another wounded when debris from a downed drone fell in Sindh province.
One drone damaged a military site near the city of Lahore and wounded four soldiers, and another fell in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, near the capital, according to Sharif. “The armed forces are neutralizing them as we speak,” he told state-run Pakistan Television.
In Lahore, local police official Mohammad Rizwan said a drone was downed near Walton Airport, an airfield in a residential area about 25 kilometers (16 miles) from the border with India that also contains military installations.
India’s Defense Ministry said its armed forces “targeted air defense radars and systems” in several places in Pakistan, including Lahore.
Blackout in Gurdaspur district
New Delhi, meanwhile, accused Pakistan of attempting “to engage a number of military targets” with missiles and drones along the Line of Control that divides Kashmir and elsewhere along their border. “The debris of these attacks in now being recovered from a number of locations,” it said.
At a news briefing, Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar on Thursday rejected India’s claim that Islamabad carried out any attack in Indian Punjab. “These accusations are an attempt to incite anti-Pakistan sentiment among the Punjabi Sikh population in India,” he said.
Seated alongside Dar, the military spokesperson, Sharif said Pakistan shot down 29 Indian drones after they violated its airspace.
Pakistani Information Minister Attaullah Tarar told parliament that so far Pakistan has not responded to India’s missiles attacks, but there will be one. Later Thursday, Indian authorities ordered a night-time blackout in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, which borders with Pakistan.
The Harop drone, produced by Israel’s IAI, is one of several in India’s inventory, according to the International Institute for Strategic Studies’ Military Balance report.
According to IAI, the Harop combines the capabilities of a drone and a missile and can operate at long ranges.
The two sides have also exchanged heavy fire over the past day.
Tarar said that the country’s armed forces have killed 40 to 50 Indian soldiers in the exchanges along the Line of Control. India has not commented on that claim. Earlier, the army said one Indian soldier was killed by shelling Wednesday.
Sikh Temple in Kashmir
Tarar denied Indian accusations that Pakistan had fired missiles toward the Indian city of Amritsar, saying in fact an Indian drone fell in the city. Neither claim could be confirmed.
India’s Foreign Ministry has said that 16 civilians were killed Wednesday during exchanges of fire across the de facto border.
Pakistani officials said six people have been killed near highly militarized frontier in exchanges of fire over the past day.
Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri denied that New Delhi has targeted civilians and a key dam, as Pakistan has alleged. He, in turn, accused Pakistani forces of targeting civilians, including at a Sikh Temple in Kashmir, where he said three Sikhs were killed.
Flights remained suspended at over two dozen airports across northern and western regions in India, according to travel advisories by multiple airlines. Pakistan resumed flights nationwide after a suspension at four airports, according to the Civil Aviation Authority.
