My wife and I are in our 50s and have $4.4 million. Can we retire early?

I enjoy reading your column and finally decided to send in my own story to get your take. I am 52, married for 27 years, with two adult children. My wife and I own two homes outright. One with a value of $335,000 and the other around $775,000. We keep around $250,000 on hand in case we need it.
We have $4.4 million in investments managed by a financial adviser, whom we love. We have approximately $25 million in value tied up in a business that we partially own. We’re currently taking in $300,000 before tax annually and are considering a “full retirement” to take more control of my time. I am scared to death that I will run out of money.
My adviser says it won’t happen; however, I am always worried. How can I get it through my head that we are good and that I can retire?
The Constant Worrywart
Don’t miss: ‘Retirement is within my grasp’: I’m 57, my 401(k) is dropping and I’m feeling anxious about a recession. What can I do?
If you do retire early and expect to live into your 80s, you could be looking at $150,000 a year in retirement income using the 4% rule. – MarketWatch illustration
Wealthy people get the heebee-jeebies too.
Your business interests alone ensure a comfortable retirement, assuming the company continues to thrive. I don’t know the specifics of your business, so I can’t talk about the company’s long-term survival. At the very least, it’s got to be an extremely comfortable backup plan for a multimillion-dollar retirement.
Assuming you genuinely worry about your ability to have a secure retirement — and you’re not trolling me and the readers with your letter — let’s take the business interests out of the picture and look at your savings. Your biggest expense, housing, is taken care of. That’s huge. You also have $250,000 in readily accessible savings for renovations or other emergencies.
If you retire early and expect to live into your 80s, you could be looking at roughly $150,000 a year in retirement income if you use the 4% rule. Withdraw 4% of your $4.4 million capital sum every year, which is about half your current combined income. You would, over that time, presumably still earn money on your investments, which would outpace inflation.
Remember, if you and your wife are not working, you will need to seek private health insurance until you reach 65. The cost will vary based on your age. For example, a 60-year-old could pay up to $1,500 per month for a PPO (preferred provider organization) plan, while a 30-year-old would likely pay around $620 per month, according to eHealth.
About your $250,000 savings. Some liquidity is good, but this is an avalanche that’s being eaten up by inflation in a bank account. Think about CDs and high-yield savings accounts. The latter are more liquid, meaning you can take your money out more easily. Typically, withdrawals are limited to half a dozen per month. With CDs, you are committing to a set ******* of time.
Perhaps it will surprise some (or many) readers, but people who are multimillionaires on paper often suffer from the same insecurities as the rest of Americans who aspire to have the same amount of wealth. Just one-third of millionaires consider themselves “wealthy” and nearly half (48%) say their financial plans need improvement, this study by Northwestern Mutual says.
Interest rates can change with high-yield savings accounts — even after you deposit your money — based on the Federal Reserve’s benchmark rate. When you buy a CD, the rate does not change. CD rates typically track the federal-funds rate, which is in the range of 4.25% to 4.5%. Currently, you can get rates of around 5.25%.
CD ladders allow you to buy 1-, 2-, 3-, 4- and 5-year CDs, so that you have one maturing every year. You can still get CD and high-yield savings account rates of up to 4.4%, which still beats the current 2.4% inflation rate. Economists have upped their predictions of a recession happening in 2025, so maybe don’t make any sudden changes right now.
You need some context and perspective outside of your predicament. The average 401(k) balance hovers at around $242,200 for baby boomers (born 1946–1964) and $182,100 for Generation X (born 1965–1980), according to Fidelity, and the average 401(k) retirement balance across all age groups is $127,100.
One theory as to why someone with $4.4 million feels so insecure: The more you have, the more you stand to lose (in theory). You need a financial plan, with dates and goals, including the kind of retirement you envisage for yourself and your wife. As John Roberts, chief field officer at Northwestern Mutual says, everyone has feelings of anxiety and insecurity.
You definitely belong among the “worry-nots” rather than the “have-nots.” “Among those with retirement savings, these savings were most frequently in defined contribution plans, such as a 401(k) or 403(b),” according to another report by the Federal Reserve. Some 75% of non-retired adults had at least some retirement savings, but 25% had no retirement savings, it added.
Oftentimes, the clue is in the question. If you are that worried about your ability to retire, keep working and accumulating savings. As humans, we constantly want more — more money, more leisure time, more excitement, more appreciation, more security and more peace of mind. Unless you hate your job, the answer may be to enjoy what you have.
Let’s hope your $25 million ship comes in.
Don’t miss: My ailing father’s house burned down in the California fires. Will our brother, who took care of them, lose his inheritance?

‘I’m very cynical’: My stepmother, 85, makes bizarre requests for money from my father’s $10M trust. Should I be concerned?
‘My retirement is going to be a disaster’: I’m 59 and have $45,000 in my 401(k). I earn $72,000. Am I doomed?

Trump met Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Dermer on Thursday, Axios reports
Trump met Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Dermer on Thursday, Axios reports
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump met Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer on Thursday and discussed nuclear talks with Iran and Israel’s war in Gaza, Axios reported, citing two sources briefed on the meeting.
The meeting was held at the White House and was not made public by the U.S. or Israel, according to Axios.
Dermer met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday and had several meetings in the White House including one with Trump on Thursday, Axios said.
The White House had no immediate comment.
Trump is preparing for his first major diplomatic trip next week that includes a three-country Middle East tour starting in Saudi Arabia.
A fourth round of U.S. nuclear talks with Iran is likely to take place over the weekend in Oman, with Iranian state media pointing to May 11 as a probable date.
Top U.S. negotiator Steve Witkoff also said Washington was trying to hold the next round of talks this weekend, according to Axios. Tehran says it is committed to diplomacy with Washington. A source familiar with the matter told Reuters Witkoff was going to Oman for the next round of Iran talks.
Western countries say Iran’s nuclear programme is geared towards producing weapons. Iran insists it is for civilian purposes. Trump has threatened to bomb Iran if no agreement is reached to resolve the long-standing dispute.
On Gaza, Israel’s Security Cabinet this week approved a plan that may include the seizure of the entire enclave of 2.3 million people, as well as control over aid, which Israel has blocked from entering since March.
Israel and the U.S. have faced criticism from human rights advocates as the humanitarian crisis in Gaza has become dire.
The latest bloodshed in the decades-old Israeli-************ conflict was triggered in October 2023, when ****** militants attacked Israel, killing 1,200 and taking about 250 hostages, according to Israeli allies.
Israel’s subsequent military assault on Gaza has killed over 52,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s health ministry, while triggering accusations of genocide and war crimes that Israel denies. It has internally displaced nearly Gaza’s entire population and caused a hunger crisis.
Trump has been condemned over his plan to displace Palestinians and for Washington to take over Gaza. Rights groups, the U.N., Palestinians and Arab states say it would amount to ethnic cleansing.

China’s exports surged in April even as businesses bore the brunt of U.S. tariffs that kicked into higher gear last month, while imports narrowed declines as Beijing stepped up stimulus.
Exports jumped 8.1% last month in U.S. dollar terms from a year earlier, according to data released by customs authority on Friday, sharply beating with Reuters’ poll estimates of a 1.9% rise.
Imports slumped by 0.2% in April from a year earlier, compared with the economists’ expectations of a 5.9% drop.
Shipments from China had clocked a 12.4% year-on-year growth in March, as exporters rushed to ship out goods to avoid higher tariffs. Imports, however, had dropped by a more than expected 4.3% from a year earlier, underscoring Beijing’s challenge of reviving domestic demand.
U.S. President Donald Trump has placed tariffs of 145% on all imports from China, prompting it to retaliate with tariffs of 125% on American imports. So far, both sides have sought to blunt the economic impact of triple-digit levies by granting exemptions on certain critical products.
This is breaking news. Please check back for updates.

Olivier award-winning La Clique set to dazzle Perth for two weeks at Eve nightclub
Olivier award-winning La Clique set to dazzle Perth for two weeks at Eve nightclub
Perth people have been cordially invited to witness a night of “absolute chaos” featuring sword swallowers, fire breathers and cabaret artists when La Clique comes to town for the first time.
The theatrical phenomenon, celebrating its 20th anniversary, features a riotous troupe performing in-your-face acts which defy the elements.
Sydney-born cabaret star Clara Fable said WA was in for a real treat when the show takes over Eve nightclub at Crown Perth.
“For someone who doesn’t know too much about circus and cabaret, it’s more of a lineup variety show, so you’ve got artists and acts from all around the world all in one place performing the best of their abilities and their own unique talents,” she said.
Fable describes herself as a “fire-breathing vocalist” and encouraged people to get their tickets to see “some crazy stuff”.

“We’ve got sword swallowers, we’ve got myself, fire breathers, we’ve got people in all backgrounds doing crazy things with their body,” she said.
“We’ve got a stunning soundtrack, beautiful lighting, we’ve got the champagne flowing and just a night of absolute chaos.
“I think that Perth honestly absolutely loves entertainment of all kinds. You know we’re right across the theatre from Sister Act at the moment, and the hype around this venue at the moment has just been incredible, so I think you’re gonna love it.”

Since its debut at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2004, La Clique, created by David Bates, has redefined cabaret entertainment for a new generation.
The show usually tours in its original Spiegeltent and Fable said it had been “awesome” but an obstacle switching the show to a different venue.
After its Perth run, La Clique will perform in Auckland, Adelaide and Edinburgh.

Troubling news from the ocean today: Apparently the crew of the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier has allowed an F-18 “Super Hornet” fighter jet to fall into the water, where it can no longer be used for its intended purpose of flying in the air, for the second time in a week:
The F/A-18F Super Hornet jet, worth about $67 million, went overboard after an unsuccessful attempt to slow it down upon landing on the USS Harry S. Truman, the Navy said in a statement. Both aviators aboard the jet safely ejected and were rescued at sea by helicopter with minor injuries, and no one aboard the warship’s flight deck was harmed, the service said.
That report is from the Washington Post, which notes that there were also no serious injuries sustained during the Truman’s prior instance of “airplane falling into ocean” one week ago. In that incident, a jet being towed to its hangar went overboard, the military says, because the carrier (if we can still call it that, given its checkered history of carrying aircraft) swerved to avoid Houthi rebel fire off the coast of Yemen in the Red Sea.
A Business Insider write-up of the incident briefly went viral on Wednesday night because its headline appeared to suggest a third jet had just been lost from the Truman; the article was accurate, but in mentioning a third plane, it was actually referring to an incident last December in which a Truman-deployed Super Hornet was accidentally shot down by the USS Gettysburg missile cruiser. (Both of the aviators aboard survived.) So, as far as that third one, we didn’t let it fall off the ship, we just shot it down ourselves.
In total, the cost of USS Truman Super Hornets lost since December ($67 million each) is nearly equal to the entire annual budget of the National Endowment for the Arts ($207 million). “The mishaps have the attention of senior U.S. military leaders, a defense official familiar with the discussion said Tuesday night,” the Post reports. Good to know.
In February, incredibly, the Truman was in the news because it ran into a cargo ship near the Suez Canal. Simply put, we may be talking about one of the worst-performing boats of all time.
Or maybe that’s unfair; maybe the Truman is being stalked by an undersea monster or ocean beast that keeps reaching its hideous tentacles out of the briny deep to grab airplanes.
Either way, deterrence theory calls for a swift counterattack against the ocean. Inaction only emboldens the Truman’s enemies, which in this case include gravity and potentially an octopus, and encourages further mischief. The best time to shoot a nuclear missile at the Great Barrier Reef in order to “show it who’s boss” was yesterday; the second-best time is now (1300 hours). We fight them (sharks) there so they don’t come here. Anchors aweigh!

Vim, vigour and whimsy embrace Vanessa Perica premiere No Feeling is Final with ASQ at WA Museum Boola Bardip
Vim, vigour and whimsy embrace Vanessa Perica premiere No Feeling is Final with ASQ at WA Museum Boola Bardip
Vim, vigour and whimsy embraced the premiere of WA jazz composer Vanessa Perica’s No Feeling is Final with *********** String Quartet at WA Museum Boola Bardip Hackett Hall on Thursday.
Beethoven broached the bill — no pressure, Vanessa — his “Serioso” String Quartet No.11 in D major the first of four programmatic works themed on Rapture.
“Serioso” opened in scurrying phrases giving way to moody flourishes breaking to runs and back, with ASQ as ever in lock step and violinist Dale Barltrop a decisive lead. Melodic flows spilled across the quartet, focused in a frenzy then resiling in silence.
Michael Dahlenburg’s mellow cello led in the Allegretto second stanza, drawing down a melancholy muse in higher strings, the whole interlaced lattice-like in delicate balance. Christopher Cartlidge’s viola changed up the mood, followed by violinist Francesca Hiew then cello in slow fugue-like sequence, melting to a solemn procession through the cello range with a silky fringe on top.
Sudden attack into the Allegro third movement quickened the blood, executed with tight timing; falling back to lyricism then re-engaging with vigour.
This, the core of the piece, ended in sudden drama before flowing on to a syrupy Larghetto finale, ebbing and flowing towards a taut conclusion.
Beethoven set a stark tone which Perica met in drama from the get-go, her first string quartet seeming to wrestle within itself, striving for expression while sustaining a steady façade of order.
Broad intervals followed by close harmony explored possibility while indulging a euphonious middle.
Camera IconAustralian String Quartet’s Dale Barltrop, Francesca Hiew, Michael Dahlenburg and Christopher Cartlidge on tour in Perth. Credit: Kane Moroney
Traditional minor melody and portamento twists paid homage to convention before breaking to a modernistic tone in the Allegro second movement; furious and frenzied, fleeing rather than seeking finality.
Perica linked the core of the work to a health crisis in married life amid a disordered world. A jump cut to more unsettled drama seemed to clinch that, each mood swing inexorably demanding another.
Constant change evoked challenge, yet not without beauty — a paradox played out in lush phrases and urgent rushes before a rippling, rhythmic figure calmed the farm for the Adagio third movement.
Lilting violin called up percussive cello and tender viola as if heartbeats and tears were bound in sympathetic tension while febrile imagination worked out in anguished violins, drawing on fresh energy for the Prestissimo finale.
Strident bowing summoned programmatic cityscapes — think Gershwin — with a mechanistic edge as the ********* chased through highways and byways.
Harmony and discord danced together with virtuosic verve down to a dramatic dismount and fervent applause, graciously fielded by the composer and quartet.
Perica’s personal edge found an echo after the interval in Janacek’s String Quartet No.2, Intimate Letters; a paean to obsessive love. “We have some more intense music for you,” Cartlidge explained.
Camera IconAustralian String Quartet’s Dale Barltrop, Francesca Hiew, Michael Dahlenburg and Christopher Cartlidge on tour in Perth. Credit: Kane Moroney
Florid fiddles and staunch cello dropped away to solo viola then cello in meditative mode. Urgent interludes broke to viola then back to ensemble, skittish in delivery yet always focused; obsessive, even. Where Beethoven or Perica might have taken a breath, Janacek had no pause button.
Viola boldly led out the Adagio second stanza, echoed in violin; an elegiac episode to assuage the urge, elegantly captured by the quartet in honeyed yet spiced tones of the Vivace second figure, then restless in the conclusion.
Sparser harmony announced a more carefree phase in the Moderato third movement though ASQ’s timing kept us guessing — playful yet poignant in equal measure.
Soaring, insistent lines emerged from torpor; pleading, perhaps, in agile passages alternating with whimsy, resiling always to viola.
By contrast the finale was a suggestive romp. Cartlidge’s viola sweetly tolled out emotion while the others danced attendance; the draw of romantic distemper just within range yet ever out of reach. Rasping pizzicato contrasted with lush bowing and clockwork strokes in a complex pot-pourri resolving again to viola before time ran out in a riot of striking chords.
Finally, toning down the lights for Golijov’s Tenebrae, ASQ also brailed back tempo and timbre to a darker space; closing the evening with Baroque balm and leisurely ornamentation.
Each part carolled in turn over undulating harmonies, morphing to mystery in viola with an oriental edge. Cello smoothed the ambience with drawn-out notes to sustain high strings, driving the rhythm forward to deeper shadows, then back to Baroque in the afterglow.
ASQ’s Rapture tour continues nationally until May 22.

Longtime Peoria ophthalmology practice announces closure
Longtime Peoria ophthalmology practice announces closure
A Peoria-area ophthalmology practice is set to close next month due to rising costs and financial issues.
Bond Eye Associates announced that its practice, which opened in 1981, would be closing on June 27 after the company ran into “unforeseen financial challenges, rising operational costs and insurance reimbursement issues,” according to a statement from William Bond, the practice’s medical director.
The practice has two locations – in Peoria at 6800 North Knoxville Ave. and in Pekin at 725 North 14th St.
Both locations of Bond Eye Associates, pictured here at 6800 Knoxville Avenue in Peoria, and another at 725 S. 14th Street in Pekin, are closing permanently
Stephanie McCartney, the practice’s administrator, said that a change last year in Medicaid’s fee structure led to a decrease in reimbursements to them, which she noted was a big part of their operation.
“It went from reimbursing $287 to $87 on some procedures that we do,” McCartney said. “Some insurance companies were not reimbursing us at all. We still have claims not paid from October of last year. With the price of everything going up and not getting any reimbursements in, it’s taken it’s toll. We can’t afford to continue on.”
McCartney said that negotiations are ongoing to bring a vision care practice to their Pekin location, with nothing finalized as of Wednesday. However, patients of Roger Adler are asked to find other arrangements for their eye care.
More: ‘A shame to lose them:’ These Peoria-area restaurants have closed in 2025
Adler told the Journal Star on Tuesday that he is planning to continue to practice eye care under Kamal Kishore with Illinois Retina & Eye Associates, serving both Peoria and La Salle-Peru.
Head and neck pain patients will continue to have the services of Kimberly Lopez at Carle Health Pekin Pain Clinic.
The practice asks that patients contact their insurance company to seek a new provider or check with their hospital’s physician referral service to help find a new ophthalmologist to treat them. The practice will assist patients in transferring their medical records to a new location.
McCartney said that checking with insurance is important for patients transferring from Bond, as they had been the only downstate optometrists to take all insurance plans.
“Someone, for instance, who has Aetna Better Health, the area they can be seen is close to Chicago,” McCartney said. “There is nobody else in this area, so it’s very directive on their insurance and they need to contact their insurance company to see who can see them.”
Adler said Wednesday that he was fortunate to have worked with Bond for the past 11 years, noting that he and Bond, who retired in 2024, complemented each other well through their various specialties – cataracts and refractive surgery for Bond, retina work for Adler.
Story Continues
Dr. Roger Adler has been an opthalmologist and retinal specialist at Bond Eye Associates for the past 11 years.
He said that Bond set itself apart by focusing on more than just the typical pathology, even referring patients for diseases such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis.
“We treat them as a person,” Adler said. “Dr. Bond has always encouraged that in so many ways. We treat them anywhere from their contact lenses to deep pathology to diabetic eye disease. It’s not uncommon that we are the first people to get them into other types of medicine. They didn’t know that they were a diabetic until they came for glasses.”
McCartney said that it was sad that the practice would be closing, saying that they got caught up in the many problems that small businesses face with rising costs and insurance issues.
“We just couldn’t proceed any more,” McCartney said. “It’s hard for small practices to maintain, but Dr. Bond had been in practice for 44 years, so we built a lot of good relationships with people.”

JD Vance Defends Trump’s Doll Talk — And It’s Even Wilder Than You Think
JD Vance Defends Trump’s Doll Talk — And It’s Even Wilder Than You Think
Vice President JD Vance on Thursday defended President Donald Trump’s statement that children will just have to deal with having fewer dolls as a result of his tariffs by offering parents a wild counterpoint: Those kids could go to war.
“What I’d ask people is not whether they want two dolls or five dolls or 20 dolls for their kids…,” Vance told Fox News’ Martha MacCallum.
“I’d ask American moms and dads … Would you like to — God forbid, if your country goes to war and your son or daughter is sent off to fight — would you like to know that the weapons that they have are good American-made stuff, not made by a foreign adversary.”
Vance, who also diverted from the dolls talk by arguing that kids’ prescription drugs could become more available in American pharmacies, noted that Trump’s point was about “bringing self-reliance back” to the U.S. economy.
“And that’s not going to happen overnight, and that’s not always going to be easy, Martha,” he said earlier in the program.
Vance’s comments come just one day after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News’ Laura Ingraham that he would reassure a little girl with fewer dolls that they would have a “better life” than their parents and experience “economic freedom” thanks to Trump.
Earlier this week, Mattel — the maker of Barbies and other popular toy lines — announced that it would hike prices on select products in the U.S. due to higher costs linked to Trump’s tariffs.
Social media users on X, formerly Twitter, swiftly clowned Vance over his war talk.

‘The vast majority of resources were to go back to society’
‘The vast majority of resources were to go back to society’
Good morning! Bumble makes new hires before a tough earnings, Penny Pritzker gets swept up in Harvard-Trump drama, and Fortune’s Alexa Mikhail talks to Melinda French Gates about gigantic news from the Gates Foundation.
– 20-year plan. For the last several months, I’ve been working alongside Fortune Senior Editor at Large Geoff Colvin on a feature package about the 25th anniversary of the Gates Foundation. We exclusively reported this morning that the foundation, which spent $100 billion in its first 25 years, will double its spending to $200 billion in the next 20 years to fight the world’s deadliest diseases, reduce maternal and child deaths, and ease poverty. After which, the foundation will spend its last dollar and shut its doors in 2045—an unprecedented move in the world of philanthropy.
To understand the sweeping implications of this decision, Colvin and I interviewed both Gateses, alongside over 30 researchers, grantees, and outside experts. I was also able to visit Gates-funded efforts in South Africa, bearing witness to programs on the ground in townships outside of Johannesburg and Cape Town that investigate the causes of five million children dying before their fifth birthday, deliver **** prevention to young adults, and enroll participants in a Phase III trial with what could be the world’s first new tuberculosis vaccine in 100 years.
Melinda French Gates has played a pivotal role in global health since the turn of the century, when she cofounded and served as co-chair of the then-Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for over two decades before stepping down in 2024 following her divorce from Bill Gates.
“It’s kind of unbelievable to think about the progress that has been made,” French Gates told me in her offices in Kirkland, Wash., in February, as she reflected upon the foundation’s 25th anniversary. In her role, French Gates traveled across the world to learn about the needs of children and families. She has since championed getting vaccines to children in low and middle-income countries, spoken on the world stage about how family planning and contraceptives are the most important poverty reducers, and taken philanthropic advice from Warren Buffett, who contributed a large portion of his wealth to the foundation.
Now, on the outside looking in, she told Fortune that she supports the foundation’s massive $200 billion announcement.
“I think it’s a fantastic decision,” she said, noting that the plan was always that the “vast majority of those resources were to go back to society.” This commitment comes as reports find investments in Africa from the U.S. for gender-associated funds are struggling as a result of President Trump’s rhetoric on DEI.
As for her current work, French Gates is more eager than ever to “set more of an agenda here in the United States.” Gates launched Pivotal Ventures in 2015 to focus on gender equality in the U.S., and is putting all of her resources into it. She recently published a memoir, where she discussed that work as well as her divorce.
“I have seen the rollbacks in this country, and I know that only 2% of philanthropy goes to organizations that work on gender,” she said. “This is the time for me to step in…I can more easily and more flexibly use every tool in my toolbox.”
Last year, French Gates made a $1 billion commitment to support organizations and individuals elevating gender equality and helping women step into their power. “I don’t know, there’s something about turning 60. My mom says you get even more opinionated, maybe because you have less time,” she said, laughing.
And what is she more opinionated about?
“I want this world to be better in the United States for my granddaughter than it is today. And right now, she has less rights than I had growing up, and that just shouldn’t be,” she said. “I am absolutely doing grant making internationally, but the majority will be in the United States.”
What’s more, French Gates has a message to the world’s wealthiest about the necessity—and moral imperative—of giving back.
“If you’re a billionaire in the United States, you benefited from this country. You benefited from good roads. You probably benefited somewhere along the way from the health sector,” she said. “People in other places don’t have those things, and so yes, we owe something back to society, and there are lots of ways to do it.”
