TV Legend William Shatner Fires Back At Trump’s ‘Insulting’ Offer
TV Legend William Shatner Fires Back At Trump’s ‘Insulting’ Offer
William Shatner slammed Donald Trump earlier this week after the U.S. president continued to entertain Canada becoming the 51st state despite getting a hard no from ********* Prime Minister Mark Carney.
“At a certain point, persistence becomes insulting,” the *********-born “Star Trek” actor told Fox News’ Jesse Watters on Tuesday.
Shatner — who has previously expressed his concerns about climate change will fare under Trump — tore apart the U.S. president for digging into his annexation threats in the Oval Office on Tuesday.
Moments after Carney emphasized that Canada was “not for *****” during the meeting, Trump responded, “never say never.”
Shatner told Watters that he’s “dealt a little” in real estate before encouraging Carney make a “real estate deal” with Trump.
“Make a counteroffer, let’s offer — Canada offer — to the United States to be the 11th province. Think of the joy! And it’s the best thing!” he said.
He continued, “Here you have a friendly group of people saying, ’Come on over. It’s cleaner, there’s plenty of power, there’s some lovely people who want to work with you. Be our 11th province!”
Watters replied that Carney “would have brought the house down” with his remarks.
Shatner agreed before turning his attention back toward Trump’s 51st state talk.
“I mean, everybody’s so serious about what is an unserious offer,” said the actor, adding that Canada has been around for over 150 years and its people have fought nobly ona number ofoccasions during both world wars.
“Tens of thousands of ********* soldiers have died in the fight for freedom and making the world playable for all of us. You can’t denigrate that. You can’t deny that.”
Shatner would later take to X, formerly Twitter, where he declared that Americans have “so much” to gain from taking the proposed deal including greater access to poutine, ketchup-flavored potato chips and scoring free health care.
“If you are angry about my posts on the US becoming a ********* province: imagine how Canadians felt when an actual leader of a friendly neighboring country floated that idea across the border,” he wrote in a post on Thursday.
“Doesn’t feel good; does it? Learn a lesson from it. .”

Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge to Use Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 Display Protection
Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge to Use Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 Display Protection
Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge is set to launch globally on May 13. Ahead of the launch, the company has confirmed that the handset will come with Corning’s new Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 display protection. Other details such as chipset and some camera specifications of the smartphone have previously been confirmed. Meanwhile, the expected price and other key features of the phone have leaked online earlier. The Galaxy S25 Edge will join the Galaxy S25 series, which was unveiled in global markets in January. The upcoming Edge variant is claimed to be the slimmest Galaxy S series model yet.
Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge to Get Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 Protection
In a press release, Samsung confirmed that the Galaxy S25 Edge handset will use Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 display protection. The company said that the Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 has “crystals embedded within its glass matrix, which is said to improve “the durability and crack resistance of the display cover.”
The South Korean tech giant further explains that the “combination of glass and crystal components” in the Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 is meant to enhance toughness “while maintaining high optical transparency.” The ion exchange process Corning uses is said to strengthen the glass ceramic material more and increase the damage resistance capability of the glass cover.
Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge Price, Features (Expected)
The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge will be equipped with Galaxy AI features and a 200-megapixel main rear camera. It is expected to get a Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC paired with 12GB of RAM. The phone will likely come with a 6.7-inch 120Hz AMOLED screen and Android 15-based One UI 7. It is expected to measure 5.85mm in thickness and weigh 163g.
For security, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge will carry an in-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor and an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance. Alongside the primary sensor, the handset could get a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 12-megapixel selfie shooter. Connectivity options are expected to include Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4. The phone could pack a 3,900mAh battery.
The Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge is tipped to cost EUR 1,249 (roughly Rs. 1,19,000) and EUR 1,369 (roughly Rs. 1,30,000) for the 256GB and 512GB storage options, respectively. It will likely be available in Titanium Jetblack, Titanium Icyblue, and Titanium Silver colour options. The phone will launch globally on May 13 at 9am KST (05:30am IST).

Zen Pinball World welcomes Lara Croft in upcoming Tomb Raider DLC
Zen Pinball World welcomes Lara Croft in upcoming Tomb Raider DLC
Uncover the secrets of Croft Manor
New third-person shooting mode
Coming June 19th
Zen Studios has announced an upcoming crossover with Tomb Raider, welcoming Lara Croft to the fray within Zen Pinball World on June 19th. This should spice up your pinball tables with some tomb-raiding aesthetics, particularly the legendary Croft Manor among other icons fans of the franchise know and love.
This comes in the form of a new DLC called “Tomb Raider Pinball”, with new pinball tables Tomb Raider Pinball: Adventures of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider Pinball: Secrets of Croft Manor. If you’re keen on reliving Lara’s most epic adventures, you’ll get your chance by pinballing through the jungles of Peru and even across the Great Wall of China.
Of course, I’d say no Tomb Raider content would be complete without Lara’s fan-fave dual pistols in the picture, so you can expect to traverse the pyramids of Egypt, battle the Sea Witch, or take on the Atlanteans with a special third-person shooting mode.
There’s new Tomb Multiball content too, where you can lock three ****** into a playfield trapdoor and see what rewards you can find throughout some multi-ball mayhem. Oh, and if you’ve ever wondered what secrets lie within the Croft Manor, you can explore that too while shooting targets along the way.
That’s simply scratching the surface of what’s up ahead, so if you’re done immersing yourself in the world of Godzilla, Kong, and Pacific Rim in the previous update, why not try raiding tombs this time around?
In the meantime, if you’re eager to join in on all the fun, you can do so by checking out Zen Pinball World on the App Store and on Google Play. It’s free-to-play with in-app purchases.
You can also join the community of followers on the official Facebook page to stay updated on all the latest developments, visit the official website for more info, or take a little peek at the embedded clip above to get a feel of the vibes and visuals.

High school students make devastating discovery while testing water in iconic national park: ‘I cried three times’
High school students make devastating discovery while testing water in iconic national park: ‘I cried three times’
High school students found a concerning level of microplastics in water samples collected from two remote Grand Teton National Park lakes.
What’s happening?
The Jackson Hole News&Guide reported on tests conducted by two San Francisco Bay Area high school students.
The duo collected water samples with a portable pump from eight lakes in Grand Teton National Park. They returned to California to analyze the lakewater with a microscope and spectrometer and found plastic particles in samples from two of the lakes.
Researchers have determined that microplastic particles can enter remote areas by wind or rain. Ski areas are another likely culprit for the contamination.
The National Park Service does not regularly sample for microplastics in water, according to the Jackson Hole News&Guide. Independent research, including the study conducted by the students, is vital to understanding the scope of microplastic pollution.
Why is finding microplastics in lakes so concerning?
Microplastics have been found just about everywhere — in soil, the Arctic Ocean, and freshwater lakes.
Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City?
“I don’t think you could sample anything and not find plastics anymore,” said Janine Brahney, a Utah State University biogeochemist, to Jackson Hole News&Guide.
“The rate at which we’re producing this waste is fast outweighing our ability to control it,” she added.
Research into the impact of microplastic pollution on nonmarine aquatic ecosystems is relatively recent. In 2020, Brahney published a study that found between 1,000 and 4,000 tons of plastic, the equivalent of 100 million to 400 million water bottles, in 12 wilderness areas and national parks in the western United States.
“I’ll be honest with you, I gave a talk recently and I cried three times,” said Brahney.
These tiny bits of plastic waste are more than an environmental menace; they also pose a serious hazard to human health.
When plastic breaks down into tiny fragments, it gets inside food, water, and even the air we breathe. Once inside the human body, microplastics can damage cells and impact immune systems. Studies have shown that microplastics can cause liver complications and reduce blood flow to the brain. Microplastics have even been found in human ******.
Now that microplastics have been found in remote lakes of Grand Teton National Park, it shows just how widespread the problem has become.
What’s being done about microplastic pollution?
Strides are being made to combat the proliferation of microplastics in the environment.
Filmmakers are documenting the impact of plastic pollution on the Great Lakes, helping bring wider attention to the issue.
Researchers are developing new filters for drinking water and a powder additive that can be dissolved in water to remove microplastics. A startup is developing a filtration system for household laundry wastewater to capture plastic microfibers before they can pollute waterways.
On an individual level, ensuring plastic products are properly recycled and reducing plastic use can prevent contributing to the growing scourge of microplastic pollution.

Exclusive-Star Health hacker says they sent death threats, bullets to India executives
Exclusive-Star Health hacker says they sent death threats, bullets to India executives
By Munsif Vengattil, Praveen Paramasivam and Aditya Kalra
NEW DELHI (Reuters) -The hacker who leaked sensitive personal data held by Indian health insurer Star Health last year has taken responsibility for sending death threats and bullets to the company’s chief executive and finance head.
The hacker, who goes by the alias “xenZen”, described their reprisals against Star Health and Allied Insurance Company in a March 31 email to Reuters. The news agency is reporting them for the first time.
Star Health, India’s biggest health insurer, has faced criticism from customers and data security experts since Reuters reported last September that xenZen had leaked sensitive client data, including medical reports. At the time, xenZen told Reuters in an email they possessed 7.24 terabytes of data related to over 31 million Star Health customers and was speaking to potential buyers for the data.
The news agency hasn’t independently confirmed the identity or location of xenZen, the accuracy of the facts laid out in the March 31 email or the hacker’s motive for targeting Star Health and its executives, which the email ascribed to the company’s denial of medical claims to certain customers.
In response to questions from Reuters, Star Health’s chief legal officer said in a statement the company could not comment “due to an ongoing, highly sensitive criminal investigation” related to its data leak.
XenZen said they had concealed bullet cartridges in two packages sent to Star Health’s head office in the southern Indian city of Chennai, in Tamil Nadu state, in February.
The email included photographs that showed the packages addressed to Chief Executive Anand Roy and Chief Financial Officer Nilesh Kambli and a note inside which read: “next one will go in ur and ur peoples head. tik tik tik.”
Roy did not respond to a phone call requesting comment, while Kambli told Reuters Star Health’s public relations team would respond on his behalf. The company did not respond to further requests for comment.
The New Indian Express on Saturday reported that police in Tamil Nadu were investigating the threats and had linked them to xenZen.
Tamil Nadu police did not respond to Reuters queries.
Three Indian police sources confirmed an investigation was underway. They declined to be named as the matter is confidential.
One police source said a man from the neighbouring state of Telangana, who the source did not name, has been arrested in recent days for allegedly helping courier the packages to Star Health on behalf of xenZen.
Story Continues
Reuters was unable to identify the individual or the status of his detention.
Globally, health care companies have been reassessing the risks for their top executives after UnitedHealthcare Chief Executive Brian Thompson was murdered in a targeted attack in December. The killing also called fresh attention to deepening patient anger over health insurance.
In the March 31 email to Reuters, xenZen referred to the killing of Thompson and said the death threats to the Star Health executives were sent after the hacker was contacted for help by customers of Star Health who had been denied claims on medical bills despite coverage plans with the company.
Star Health did not comment on what xenZen described as their motive, the claims of dissatisfied customers being denied or the police investigation into the threats.
Star Health launched internal investigations into last year’s data leak, which the company said followed a ransom demand of $68,000 from the hacker.
Star Health last September sued xenZen and messaging app Telegram for hosting the sensitive customer data on its chatbots, court papers show. The chatbots hosting the stolen data have since been deleted and the case is ongoing.

Details Emerge About John Elway’s Golf Cart ****** That Killed His Friend Jeff Sperbeck: Report
New details have emerged in John Elway’s fatal golf cart ****** that killed his friend, Jeff Sperbeck.
CBS affiliate 9 News reported on Tuesday, May 6, that Elway, 64, left a private function at Madison Club in La Quinta with Sperbeck, Sperbeck’s wife Cori, Elway’s girlfriend, son Jack and additional friends on April 26. The group reportedly had a caravan of three or four golf carts designated to transport around 10 to 15 people a quarter-mile to Elway’s house at the private golf resort’s community.
Jack had a group with him and rode in a cart ahead of Elway. In addition to Elway himself, his cart was reportedly transporting his girlfriend, Sperbeck, Cori and The Challenge star Johnny Bananas. Sperbeck told his wife to sit up front with Elway and Elway’s girlfriend while he rode in the back with Bananas, 42, per the outlet.
Sperbeck allegedly fell off the cart while Elway was driving. Multiple sources told the outlet that there was “no swerving or horseplay” and “no one was drunk.” The golf cart also allegedly did not hit anything.
Jeff Sperbeck’s Family Breaks Silence After He Dies in Golf Cart Accident: ‘Unimaginable Loss’
It was previously reported that Elway, Sperbeck and their group had attended the nearby Stagecoach music festival that day. However, 9 News reported that the group went the previous day and opted not to go the following day due to “inclement weather.”

News broke on April 30 that Sperbeck died as the result of a traumatic head injury as a result of the accident. It was later revealed that Elway called 911 after Sperbeck hit his head. When paramedics arrived on the scene, Sperbeck was reportedly still breathing and was transported to the hospital. Sperbeck was placed on life support before succumbing to his injuries days later.
Following the news of Sperbeck’s passing, Elway released a statement mourning the death of his friend and former manager.
Johnny Bananas Shares Video of Golf Cart Ride Amid Reports He Was Present During John Elway’s ******
“I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck,” Elway said. “There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me.”
Law enforcement subsequently opened an investigation. On Friday, May 2, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco told The Denver Post that “nothing that we have found” indicated law enforcement needed to be involved.
“This appears to be a horrific accident,” Bianco said. “And unfortunately for all of those involved, one of the people – well, a couple of them – happen to be very high-profile celebrities. And that makes this more of an issue than it probably should be.”

No Ridley, no problem: Bombers backs ready to step up
No Ridley, no problem: Bombers backs ready to step up
Essendon’s defence are ready to show they can hold the fort without luckless star Jordan Ridley.
And emerging defender Zach Reid is determined to play a key role in Saturday’s clash with Sydney at Marvel Stadium.
Essendon looked all at sea against North Melbourne when Ridley went down with a hamstring injury just before half-time last Thursday.
The Bombers will be without Ridley for around eight weeks.
“He’s a great player – so it’s always hard to miss him,” Reid told AAP.
“He sets us up so well.”
Sydney forward Hayden McLean insists Ridley’s absence won’t change the Swans’ approach.
“Obviously Ridley is a star player for them and a key asset for them, but it doesn’t really affect how we prepare for this week,” McLean said.
“A different person comes in, he’s probably going to try to play the same role, just like we have players that come in and we expect the most from them.
“If they’re losing players, we’re losing players. It’s going to be a really good battle.”
Lewis Hayes will debut as Essendon’s third tall defender.
“Hayesy’s VFL form has been unreal,” Reid said.
“He’d be a direct swap – can play tall or small.”
Reid and Hayes will also take confidence from playing alongside defensive general Ben McKay.
“He’s always in the right spots, and he’s just a rock back there, really,” Reid said.
“It’s nice to look back and you have Ben there behind me every week. So we’re building that synergy.”
Reid, 23, is relishing a run of consistent games after an injury-plagued first four years.
“It’s the most I’ve played AFL consecutively, so loving it,” he said.
“But I’m feeling good. The first couple rounds, I just had to find my feet again and pick up the speed of AFL.
“But after I did that, I feel like I’ve built in nicely.”
Reid knows the Swans will be a big task.
“The competition is really close, and if you’re off by a metre, it really hurts,” he said.
“It’s a challenge. They’re coming off the grand final, so they’re still a grand final playing team. We’ll have to prep really well
“Their ball movement’s quick, they’ve got skilful players at their half back line – they’ve added (Riley) Bice and they’ve got (Nick) Blakey.”

Scientists issue urgent warning after invasive creature reaches unexpected coastline — here’s what they found
Scientists issue urgent warning after invasive creature reaches unexpected coastline — here’s what they found
A strange and dangerous pufferfish species was recently spotted in Croatia’s Bay of Medulin, as reported by Pensoft. This unexpected visitor is the silver-cheeked toadfish, and its arrival marks the northernmost sighting ever recorded in the Mediterranean. It signals an unsettling shift that experts say should concern everyone, from local fishers to seafood lovers.
What happened?
Originally from the Indo-Pacific, the silver-cheeked toadfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus) is a species that made its way into the Mediterranean through the Suez Canal, which scientists call “lessepsian migration.”
Since first appearing in the region in 2003, the silver-cheeked toadfish has spread quickly, and now, for the first time, it has reached northern Adriatic waters.
In May 2024, researchers recorded the species for the first time in the northern Adriatic Sea. The fish measured over 50 centimeters and carried tetrodotoxin, a deadly neurotoxin. With sharp, beak-like jaws strong enough to bite through fishing lines and even fingers, the toadfish is as dangerous as it is destructive.
This invasive species is already making life harder for small-scale fishers by damaging nets, stealing bait, and eating up native marine life such as clams and sea urchins.
Why is the discovery concerning?
The fish northward spread highlights how climate change and ecological imbalance are reshaping marine life.
Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City?
Warmer waters and fewer predators are creating the perfect conditions for this invader to thrive. That puts local species, already stressed by pollution and overfishing, in an even tighter spot.
When an aggressive invader like this takes over, it disrupts food chains and places more pressure on struggling ecosystems.
Coastal communities that rely on fishing and tourism are especially vulnerable, facing reduced catches and increased gear damage.
With few known predators in the Mediterranean — only juvenile fish and loggerhead turtles have been observed feeding on them — the population of silver-cheeked toadfish is likely to keep growing unless action is taken.
What’s being done about the silver-cheeked toadfish?
Luckily, steps are being taken. Marine experts recommend improving monitoring and reporting systems so communities can respond faster to sightings. This kind of early detection has helped slow the spread of invasive species such as lionfish in other regions.
In places battling sea urchin and European green crab invasions, tactics like predator reintroductions and habitat restoration have helped restore ecological balance.
People can also play a role by participating in removal efforts and eating invasive species.
The right tools and teamwork could turn this warning sign into a success story for the Mediterranean’s future.

Lachie Schultz: AFL says play would have been stopped had umpires seen Collingwood forward concussed
Lachie Schultz: AFL says play would have been stopped had umpires seen Collingwood forward concussed
The AFL says its umpiring unit failed to notice Lachie Schultz concussed on the Optus Stadium turf on Thursday night, clarifying that play would have stopped if they had seen the Collingwood forward in distress.
The league’s statement came after key figures from both the Magpies and Fremantle expressed disappointment that play had continued for some 15 seconds after the sickening incident, which saw Schultz in obvious trouble following an attempted tackle on Jordan Clark.
Schultz lay on his back with his arms outstretched as play continued in the vicinity in the early stages of the final term, before umpires called proceedings to a halt once Jamie Elliott was lining up for a set shot at goal.
The AFL said play would have been stopped once Nick Daicos received the ball in the immediate aftermath of Schultz going down.
“The play can be stopped by the umpires, who are instructed to stop play as soon as they are aware there is an injured player in the vicinity of play,” the league said in a statement.
“In (Thursday) night’s match the umpires did not see the injured player at the time, so play continued.

“Upon review, if umpires were aware, play would have been stopped when Daicos had possession in the middle of the ground.”
The coaches of both clubs agreed play should have been halted sooner than it was, with Magpies skipper Darcy Moore saying it “didn’t feel right” to carry on when Schultz was struggling.
Speaking exclusively to The West *********** after the game, Clark – who played two seasons alongside Schultz before the latter’s move to Collingwood – said he had felt sick to see his friend in that state.
“From my point of view, I thought was a very fair contest. Unfortunately, didn’t look very good,” Clark said.
“And I will be honest, I had a sick feeling go through my body seeing one of my mates get hurt like that.
“Honestly, I just wanted play to stop, to make sure he was in good hands. For a couple of minutes, it did rattle me a little bit but yeah, I think that’s unfortunately, the nature of the sport.
“He’s in the best hands possible now.”

Clark said he would reach out to Schultz to check he was OK in the aftermath of the clash.

Altcoin breakout coming? Kraken’s chief economist says investors are still waiting for a catalyst
Altcoin breakout coming? Kraken’s chief economist says investors are still waiting for a catalyst
Bitcoin is, at least historically, a cyclical asset.
These cycles revolve around the ‘halving,’ where rewards for mining Bitcoin are cut in half, decreasing the supply of new Bitcoin available to investors.
A huge aspect of previous cycles has been the rotation of capital from Bitcoin to altcoins. In the most recent cycle, decentralized finance (DeFi) experienced a massive *****, called DeFi summer. NFTs also became incredibly popular, with thousands being minted each day on a variety of platforms.
The last halving was in April of 2024, and Bitcoin has since risen over 70%. Altcoins have significantly underperformed during this time; Ethereum is down over 30%, Solana has only increased by 25%, and Dogecoin has risen by about 30%, according to Kraken’s price feed.
Thomas Perfumo, Chief Economist at Kraken, spoke with TheStreet Roundtable’s Scott Melker about the altcoin market’s outlook in 2025. He believes that the catalyst for the altcoin market has still not happened, and remains optimistic.
This Bitcoin cycle is unique in a lot of ways.
The biggest reason for that is the government’s attitude towards digital assets has changed drastically under President Trump. He paused investigations, launched his own crypto projects, and directed his administration to craft clear and unburdensome regulations for the industry.
Simultaneously, he has created uncertainty in the markets with his tariff policies, which seem to change daily. As Perfumo points out, this discourages investments in high-risk assets.
“I think (Bitcoin dominance) is more of a reaction to the short-term environment. (In the current macroeconomic environment) risk on is just not the thing to do. And so people are hunkering down back into Bitcoin.”
Bitcoin has multiple advantages to altcoins in this respect. One is that Bitcoin has “been viewed as a commodity for quite a while. There wasn’t really ever the threat that it might be viewed as a security.”
Another factor is the institutional involvement now present in the Bitcoin network. “Bitcoin has an additional advantage, which is that it has the tie to the traditional capital markets in the form of vehicles like the Bitcoin ETFs and also large demand purchasers like MicroStrategy that has bought,” Perfumo explained.
“I believe it’s over $8 billion worth of spot Bitcoin year-to-date loan. And so that to me is more of an indication or a reason why you’re seeing Bitcoin outperform so much compared to the altcoins,” he added.
While altcoins have yet to run this cycle due to various market conditions, there is still so much potential and exciting projects being built. Eventually, those who want to take on more risk will turn their eyes back to digital assets outside of Bitcoin.

Peru celebrates celebrates Pope Leo XIV as one of their own
Peru celebrates celebrates Pope Leo XIV as one of their own

People celebrate at the Cathedral of Saint Mary in Chiclayo, Peru with a banner saying Pople XIV has a Chiclayo heart.
Halfway through Leo XIV’s first speech as pope, which he delivered in Italian, he stopped and asked if he might say a few words in Spanish.
Smiling, he continued: “A greeting to all and in particular to my dear Diocese of Chiclayo, in Peru.”
The first American pope is a citizen of Peru and has spent much of his life there, travelling between the two countries for decades until 2014, when Pope Francis appointed him bishop of the Chiclayo Diocese in the country’s north.
On Thursday, Peruvians rejoiced at the appointment of one of their own to the highest position in the Catholic church.
Standing near Lima’s cathedral shortly after bells rang out in celebration of the appointment, elementary school teacher Isabel Panez said: “For us Peruvians, it is a source of pride that this is a pope who represents our country.”
Prevost would often say that he had “come from Chicago to Chiclayo – the only difference is a few letters,” Diana Celis, who attended several Masses officiated by the then Bishop Robert Prevost, told the Associated Press news agency.
He reportedly referred to Peru, where around three quarters of people are Catholic, as “mi segunda patria” – my second homeland.
Peru’s president, Dina Voluarte, described Pope Leo as Peruvian “by choice and conviction”.
“The pope is Peruvian; God loves Peru,” she said.
Born in Chicago in 1955, he is the son of Louis Marius Prevost, of French and Italian descent, and Mildred Martinez, of Spanish descent.
After completing studies in theology in Chicago and in canon law in Rome, the Catholic Church sent him to Peru for the first time.
He arrived at the Augustinian mission in Chulucanas, in the Peruvian department of Piura, in 1985, aged 30, and the following year, joined the mission in Trujillo. For almost three decades, he worked between the US and Peru.
Then, in 2014, Pope Francis appointed Prevost bishop of Chiclayo, a position he assumed the following year, after becoming a Peruvian citizen.
Jose Luis Perez Guadalupe, who was the minister responsible for signing Prevost’s naturalisation, told BBC Mundo that he was “a very attentive and very thoughtful man, who listened more than he spoke.”
These were his first encounters with a country that would come to shape his life.

Janinna Sesa, who met Prevost while she worked for the church’s Caritas nonprofit, told the Associated Press during torrential rains in 2022 he waded through mud to help people in Chiclayo and nearby villages.
He also delivered food and blankets to remote Andean villages, driving a white pickup truck and sleeping on a thin mattress on the floor. There, Sesa said, Prevost ate whatever was offered to him, including the peasant diet consisting of potatoes, cheese and sweet corn.
But, if the opportunity came up, he would enjoy carne asada – one of his favorite dishes – accompanied by a glass of Coca-Cola.
He also had an interest in cars. “He has no problem fixing a broken-down truck until it runs,” Sesa said.
Prevost was the driving force for the purchase of two oxygen-production plants during the coronavirus pandemic, which killed more than 217,000 people across Peru.
“He worked so hard to find help, that there was not only enough for one plant, but for two oxygen plants,” Sesa said.
Edinson Farfán, the Peruvian Bishop of Chiclayo since 2024, said Pope Leo would continue Pope Francis’s legacy of working with the poor and advocating for “a Church with open doors”. He was “very close to Pope Francis”, he said.
“He was undoubtedly deeply influenced by this particular Church of Chiclayo. Chiclayo is a city that greatly values the simple faith of its people. He has a special affection for the diocese.”
“It’s his beloved diocese, it’s his life. He learned here everything he can share and will share with the entire world.”

But not all in the country are proud of his record.
Serious accusations have been made about his handling of ******* abuse cases during his time as Bishop of Chiclayo.
In 2023, three Peruvian women went public with claims that as bishop he failed to investigate their reports of having been abused as teenagers by two priests in Chiclayo, dating back to 2007. They said that when they raised their allegations with the diocese in 2022, no proper inquiry was opened.
Church officials in Chiclayo said that action was taken and the accused priests were put on precautionary suspension, and that the case was referred to the ********’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, which handles serious abuse cases.
The diocese said it was Rome’s decision to shelve the case without a full canonical trial and that it conducted a preliminary investigation.
These allegations about his leadership are one of the challenges he will face as he now heads the Church worldwide.

Perez Guadalupe said that while Prevost primarily remained focused on church matters in Peru, he was “very attentive to the reality” of the country.
In 2023, when violent anti-government protests following the ousting of then-president Pedro Castillo left 49 dead, Prevost told Peruvian media he felt “much sorrow and much pain”.
That year, Pope Francis called Prevost to Rome to serve as the prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops, the powerful head of the office that vets bishop nominations from around the world and one of the most important jobs in the Catholic Church. He was also appointed president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.
Prevost said that he had asked Pope Francis to allow him to remain in Peru longer.
As he heard Prevost was the new pope, Thomas Nicolini, a Peruvian who studies economics in Rome, went to St. Peter’s Square.
He told the AP that Chiclayo is, “A beautiful area, but one of the regions that needs lots of hope.”
“So, now I’m expecting that the new pope helps as many people as possible, and tries to reignite, let’s say, the faith young people have lost.”

‘There can be some really severe symptoms’
‘There can be some really severe symptoms’
For years, health officials have warned outdoor lovers of the dangers of Lyme disease from tick bites. However, researchers are now sounding the alarm over the rise of a relatively obscure virus.
What’s happening?
According to a Minnesota Department of Health report, cases of the little-known Powassan virus have increased in Minnesota over the past few years. In 2024, 14 cases of the virus were reported in the state, the highest number since Minnesota began keeping track of Powassan in 2008. The previous record-high was 11 cases in 2011.
Blacklegged ticks can transmit the Powassan virus through bites, similar to Lyme disease. However, the majority of Powassan virus cases originated in north-central Minnesota. As the MDH noted, the virus appears to be widely distributed throughout the wooded areas of Minnesota.
The MDH reports that most cases of Powassan virus began to experience symptoms of their illness in late spring to midsummer. It is noted that there is also the potential for additional cases appearing in the fall, which may correspond with the peak of blacklegged tick activity in the state.
Why is the Powassan virus important?
The Minnesota Star Tribune reported that the National Institutes of Health awarded Matthew Aliota, an associate professor at the University of Minnesota’s Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences, a $3.5 million grant to study the virus in 2024.
Aliota emphasized the importance of further research on the Powassan virus, noting the obscurity of the disease among the general population. “We don’t understand everything there is to know about this virus,” Aliota said. “What we do know is that if you are infected with it, there can be some really severe symptoms because it’s a virus that can invade the central nervous system and go to your brain.”
Watch now: How bad is a gas stove for your home’s indoor air quality?
According to the data, the fatality rate for the Powassan virus is around 10 percent. While most people may not be aware of any symptoms, severe cases can cause seizures and swelling of the brain. Vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and immunocompromised, are most at risk of experiencing the most severe symptoms.
“The Powassan virus is an understudied virus,” Aliota said. “It’s one more thing on the list of reasons of why you should be diligent in terms of taking precautions to prevent tick bites.”
What can be done to prevent the Powassan virus?
Despite the growing concern, Elizabeth Schiffman, epidemiologist supervisor at the Minnesota Department of Health, reassured Minnesotans. “The risks are relatively low; however, all the tick prevention that you would do to keep yourself from getting one of those more common diseases will also help keep you safe from getting Powassan,” Schiffman said.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that anyone venturing outdoors be aware of where ticks may be most common, such as high grass, wooded areas, or on infested various wildlife.
You can also treat your clothing and gear with products containing 0.5% permethrin. Permethrin can be used to treat boots, clothing, and camping gear. The chemical works by overstimulating the tick’s nervous system, causing it to become paralyzed and detach from the treated fabric.
