  1. iPhone Fold invisible crease sounds great — but this is the feature Apple can’t afford to ignore iPhone Fold invisible crease sounds great — but this is the feature Apple can’t afford to ignore When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Credit: Future Whether it ends up being called the iPhone Flip or iPhone Fold, or something else entirely different from the rumors, there’s clearly a lot at stake with Apple’s presumably first foldable iPhone. There’s still a long road ahead before its debut, and while the latest leaks indicate Apple’s investing heavily into a “nearly invisible” crease, I really hope it’s putting in the same amount of resources to build out another, equally important feature. I’m referring to how it would handle the task of multitasking, which I think is critical for any notebook-style foldable phone. On one hand, Apple could simply replicate how it does multitasking on its iPads. But after seeing what its competition has achieved, Apple can’t afford to ignore developing an entirely new system that makes more sense for an iPhone. Apple has the reputation of going after perfection, which I hope Apple pours into crafting a multitasking experience that not only rivals, but surpasses what we’ve seen. Beauty isn’t just on the surface, it’s found deeper and it’s a chance to fundamentally refine how people interact with a foldable. The crease is a design aesthetic you could overcome Credit: Future Before I get into the details around what the iPhone Fold needs to do with multitasking, I just want to share my thoughts around the crease in today’s best foldable phones. Every single one of them has a visible crease to some degree, but it doesn’t deter me from using them. Obviously, wear and tear will cause the crease to become more apparent over time, but I barely notice it once I turn on the display. What I’m trying to say is that a crease doesn’t impact the way I interact with the display on my Galaxy Z Fold 6, both aesthetically on how it looks and physically when I’m touching the screen. Watching videos pretty much makes the crease disappear, unless I’m looking at it from an odd angle. Apps switching isn’t the same as multitasking Credit: Future Through the 18 major versions of iOS that have been released, Apple has yet to ever come out with its own version of multitasking for iPhone. Don’t get me wrong, I was thrilled when iOS 4 finally gave us the ability to switch between apps, but what I’m craving most is for that side-by-side app multitasking. The closest thing we have to that is the multitasking features of iPadOS, where it does in three different ways: split view, slide over, and center window. These work well for iPads, but they might not be ideal for the smaller iPhone Fold — which is rumored to have a 7.74-inch main display. This would still be smaller than the 8.3-inch display found with the iPad Mini, so the experience may not end up being the same. One of the other challenges around multitasking on the iPhone Fold is the amount of power and memory needed to run apps simultaneously. Currently on my iPhone 16 Pro Max, I could run a few apps before they are refreshed. Nothing annoys me more when I open one app, only to have it relaunch when I try to go back to it after running another app. Multitasking could unlock the iPhone’s greatest potential Credit: Future The reason why I want Apple to invest heavily into developing a multitasking system for the iPhone Fold is because it could be the key to tapping into a new experience unlike anything we’ve seen previously. And Apple really needs to look at its competition to come up with a multitasking system that’s practical and effective. One of the best multitasking implementations I’ve seen to date is Open Canvas with the OnePlus Open. This is hands down the best multitasking on a phone to date, largely due to how the display dynamically adapts to run multiple apps at once. What’s remarkable about this implementation is how it can run apps in full-screen apps alongside others, which you can see in the animation above. Credit: Future I’m not saying that Apple needs to copy this, but it’s the kind of ingenious thinking that makes multitasking on a foldable device intuitive. Beyond how apps are arranged in a multitasking view, I’m also eager to see what cross actions Apple will offer. Naturally, drag and drop would be the logical one to bring to the iPhone Fold, but Apple would need to do much more to set itself apart. Credit: Tom’s Guide And lastly, I think multitasking with the iPhone Fold could also be an opportunity to introduce new accessories to make it stand apart from any iPhone before it. One accessory that comes to mind is a combination case and keyboard, much like the one available to the iPad Pro 2024, which could help bridge that gap in making it a laptop replacement. Either way, this is the area where Apple needs to devote more of its time and effort. With WWDC 2025 set for June 9, it’ll be interesting to see what new changes will come with iOS 19, like the rumor about adding a desktop mode similar to Samsung DeX. 3. Russia marks end of WWII as Ukraine war grinds on Russia marks end of WWII as Ukraine war grinds on Russia is marking the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II with a parade attended by China’s Xi Jinping amid tight security to guard against Ukrainian attacks after three years of devastating war. President Vladimir Putin, the longest-serving Kremlin chief since Josef Stalin, stood beside Xi, several dozen other leaders and Russian veterans on a roofed tribune beside Vladimir Lenin’s mausoleum on Red Square as Russian troops marched past. Putin’s defence minister, Andrei Belousov, inspected 11,000 troops – including many who have fought in Ukraine – and congratulated them on Victory Day to roars of approval. The Ukraine war, Europe’s deadliest since World War II, haunts this celebration. Ukraine attacked Moscow with drones for several days this week, though there were no reports of major attacks on Russia on Friday amid a 72-hour ceasefire declared by Putin. The Kremlin says the attendance of Russian allies such as Xi, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and several dozen leaders from the former Soviet Union, Africa, Asia and Latin America shows Russia is not isolated even if Moscow’s former Western war allies stay away. From Europe, the leaders of Serbia and Slovakia were attending. “The victory over fascism, achieved at the cost of enormous sacrifices, has an everlasting significance,” Putin told Xi in the Kremlin on Thursday. “The countless sacrifices made by both our peoples should never be forgotten.” The Soviet Union lost 27 million people in World War II, including many millions in Ukraine, but pushed Nazi forces back to Berlin, where Adolf Hitler committed suicide and the red Soviet Victory Banner was raised over the Reichstag in 1945. For Russians – and for many of the peoples of the former Soviet Union – May 9 is the most sacred date in the calendar, and Putin, angry at what he says are attempts by the West to belittle the Soviet victory, has sought to use memories of the war to unite Russian society. ******** ********** Party historians say China’s casualties in the 1937-1945 Second Sino-Japanese War were 35 million. Moscow and Kyiv do not publish accurate casualty numbers for the war in Ukraine, though US President Donald Trump, who says he wants peace, says hundreds of thousands of soldiers on both sides have been killed and injured. Putin has sought to insulate Moscow from the grinding artillery and drone war being fought 600km away in Ukraine, though Ukrainian drone attacks have in recent days disrupted air travel to the Russian capital. For the first time, Russia would parade drones, the biggest technological innovation of the Ukraine war, Russian state television said. The Kremlin said the military was doing everything it could to ensure security for the parade next to the Kremlin. Security is very tight in Moscow, as military units from 13 countries take part in the parade along with Russian troops. Putin proposed a 72-hour ceasefire until May 10, though Ukraine said Russia had broken the ceasefire, a claim dismissed as absurd by Moscow. 4. India says military stations attacked by Pakistan drones and missiles India says military stations attacked by Pakistan drones and missiles By Aftab Ahmed, Adnan Abidi and Saeed Shah JAMMU, India/ISLAMABAD (Reuters) -Blasts rang out across the Indian city of Jammu late on Thursday during what the government said was a Pakistani drone and missile attack on military stations around the Kashmir region on the second day of clashes between the nuclear-armed neighbours. Sirens sounded and red flashes and projectiles erupted in the night sky above Jammu for about 2-1/2 hours, a Reuters journalist said, in what appeared to be an escalation in the countries’ worst confrontation in more than two decades. Two days of fighting have killed nearly four dozen people. “Military stations at Jammu, Pathankot & Udhampur were targeted by Pakistani-origin drones and missiles along the international border in J&K today,” India’s Ministry of Defence said on X, citing places in and near the federal territory of Jammu and Kashmir. “The threats were swiftly neutralised …. No casualties or material losses were reported.” Indian TV channels also showed flares and flashes in the sky above Jaisalmer city in Rajasthan state, which shares a border with the southern Pakistani province of Sindh. In a statement, Islamabad denied attacking Pathankot in India’s Punjab state, Srinagar in the Kashmir Valley and Jaisalmer and said the accusations were “entirely unfounded, politically motivated, and part of a reckless propaganda campaign aimed at maligning Pakistan”. Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the country would respond to any escalation “with full resolve and determination to safeguard Pakistan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.” Electricity in Jammu was slowly being restored after a blackout during the attack, a Reuters journalist said. Eight missiles, fired from Pakistan at the Jammu region towns of Satwari, Samba, Ranbir Singh Pura and Arnia, were intercepted by air defence units, added an Indian military source who asked not to be named. They were part of a wider attack, the source added. Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif earlier said further retaliation was “increasingly certain” after both countries accused each other of launching drone attacks. World powers from the U.S. to Russia and China have called for calm in one of the world’s most dangerous and populated nuclear flashpoint regions. The U.S. Consulate General in Pakistan’s Lahore ordered staff to shelter in place. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called for de-escalation in separate calls with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday, the State Department said. The relationship between India and Pakistan has been fraught with tension since they gained independence from colonial Britain in 1947. The countries have fought three wars, two of them over Kashmir, and clashed many times. The neighbours, which both claim Kashmir in full and rule over parts of it, separately acquired nuclear weapons in the 1990s. DRONES, MISSILES, AIR DEFENCES In the latest confrontations, India said it hit nine “terrorist infrastructure” sites in Pakistan on Wednesday in retaliation for what it says was a deadly Islamabad-backed attack in Indian Kashmir on April 22. Pakistan says it was not involved and denied that any of the sites hit by India were militant bases. It said it shot down five Indian aircraft on Wednesday, a report the Indian embassy in Beijing dismissed as “misinformation”. Pakistan’s military said earlier on Thursday it shot down 29 drones from India at multiple locations including the two largest cities of Karachi and Lahore and the garrison city of Rawalpindi, home to the army’s headquarters. The Indian defence ministry said Pakistan attempted to engage a number of military targets in northern and western India from Wednesday night into Thursday morning and they were “neutralised” by Indian air defence systems. In response, Indian forces targeted air defence radars and systems at a number of locations in Pakistan on Thursday, the ministry said. Before trading ended, both countries saw their stocks, bonds and currencies decline, and Pakistan’s benchmark share index closed down 5.9%. Local media reported panic buying in some cities in the Indian state of Punjab, which shares a border with Pakistan, as people hoarded essentials. 6. Tougher Kia Tasman Weekender concept ute could preview future update Tougher Kia Tasman Weekender concept ute could preview future update The Kia Tasman Weekender (WKNDR) Concept made headlines at this year’s Seoul motor show and, while it hasn’t been confirmed for production as yet, it could preview future design updates for the Korean’s brand’s first ute. Speaking with CarExpert at a local pre-production drive of the Tasman X-Pro this week, Kia Australia’s general manager for product planning Roland Rivero said the polarising design of the launch vehicle is here to stay for the time being. “At the moment, to be honest – it’s just a concept. It’s a concept for enhancement of the brand… [to] further promote the Tasman,” Mr Rivero said. “Across the lifecycle, [there is] plenty of opportunity to enhance [the Tasman] and, who knows, the facelift might draw inspiration from it, I don’t know.” Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. Revealed at the Seoul show last month, the Kia Tasman Weekender concept – or WKNDR, as it was badged – is kitted out with hardcore off-road equipment including larger front and rear bumpers housing recovery points, all-terrain tyres, and sturdy-looking side steps. There’s also a chunky roof rack that leads into a large rear sailplane, plus what appear to be dual winches and a sizeable storage box above the rear tray. It all previews what could be possible in the realm of heavy-duty genuine accessories for the polarising new Korean dual-cab. One of the other key changes for the Tasman WKNDR is the use of body colour for its controversial horizontal wheel-arches, which makes them appear less prominent than the dull ****** plastic material for which the production model attracted so much criticism. The Weekender is finished in a matte beige paint, which closely resembles the Tan Beige colour available for the production-spec Tasman – also reminiscent of the Toyota LandCruiser 79 Series‘ iconic Sandy Taupe. It’s augmented by lime green accents on the front and rear bumpers, as well as tie-down straps attached to the side of the Tasman’s bed. All of the chunky accessories, including the lower portion of the bed and cabin, are finished in matte grey. The Korean brand’s local arm has collaborated with local suppliers like EGR Auto and Triple M for its catalogue of Tasman add-ons, which are said to include everything from bull bars, canopies, trays and side steps. Mr Rivero confirmed that numerous variations of each accessory will also be available to suit different Tasman variants as well as customer needs – think standard versus heavy-duty, as well as Single versus Double Cab, and Pickup versus Cab Chassis. Kia offers a number of wild and wacky extras for the Tasman in the Korean domestic market, but Mr Rivero said these options aren’t locked in for Australia at the moment, largely due to the cost from factory. 9. Threads Begins Testing Video Ads to Help Businesses Expand Reach, Increase Audience Engagement Threads Begins Testing Video Ads to Help Businesses Expand Reach, Increase Audience Engagement Threads announced its latest advertising initiative in the form of video ads at the Interactive Advertising Bureau NewFronts 2025 on Thursday. The Meta-owned platform says it has begun video ads as a way for businesses to expand their reach and engage a wider audience. Ad creatives will appear in between the organic content (user posts) in the Threads feed in multiple aspect ratios. Notably, the microblogging platform first announced ads on its platform in January, and the introduction of video ads seems to be the latest addition to its advertising initiatives. Video Ads on Threads According to Meta Platforms’ newsroom post, a small number of advertisers will soon be able to put video-based ads between individual posts. Similar to Instagram, these will appear with a “Sponsored” tag at the top right corner of the ad placement. Tapping the ad is said to bring up the video player with a full screen view of the visuals. And like posts on Threads, users will be able to like, comment, repost, and share an ad. Placement of video ads on Threads Photo Credit: Meta Platforms There also appears to be a floating action button (FAB) that will redirect the user to the brand’s website for more details. As per Meta, ad creatives can be shown in 16:9 or 1:1 video ratios. The company says video ads present businesses with a “ new way to engage with their audience.” However, it stopped short of explaining the pricing or the frequency with which the ads might appear on Threads. This move is in line with the recent introduction of ads on the microblogging platform. In January, Meta commenced testing of ads in Japan and the US markets. Last month, it opened up the app to all advertisers globally, enabling them to place ad campaigns. Advertisers leveraging Meta’s Advantage+ or Manual Placements will have their ads switched on by default. In addition to video ads on Threads, Meta has begun testing trending ads for Instagram Reels. It is said to be a short-form video solution which places ads against the most trending Reels from creators on the platform. 10. 2025 Kia Tasman to get split safety rating 2025 Kia Tasman to get split safety rating Kia Australia says the new Tasman dual-cab ute’s success in the fleet market hinges on a five-star ANCAP safety rating which it expects to achieve, though the entire range isn’t expected to be rated by the safety authority. Speaking with CarExpert at the prototype drive of the brand’s first dual-cab ute, general manager for product at Kia Australia – Roland Rivero – said the local range will offer two front bumper variations, with the off-road bumper on the X-Line and X-Pro models less effective in pedestrian detection. “[The front bumper of lower grades] is safety related, in that the lower approach angle in effect assists with pedestrian safety, or vulnerable road user detection, and with the high approach angle the X-Line and X-Pro it’s not as friendly from a lower leg perspective – so we want to give the Tasman a chance of hitting the five-star mark,” Mr Rivero said. “Particularly because it’s a non-negotiable for many fleets, we don’t want to lose that potential 50 per cent of business if we don’t achieve that five-star rating.” Hundreds of new car deals are available through CarExpert right now. Get the experts on your side and score a great deal. Browse now. Camera IconTasman S Credit: CarExpertCamera IconTasman X-Pro Credit: CarExpert When asked if there will be a split rating for the Tasman similar to how the previous-generation Kia Cerato had a split rating depending on specification, Mr Rivero said the off-road-focused models will likely go unrated instead. “At this point in time, the off-roaders will be unrated, in effect. But you can still take an S, SX or SX+ 4×4 off-road if you wanted to, and get a reasonable approach angle if you change the bar and put a bullbar in its place that will grant you a lot more clearance,” Mr Rivero continued “We envisage some of the big fleets will do that – QFleet, Department of Agriculture, Department of Primary Industries – they do that, and they need a five-star rating from the get-go. “[Those customers] do a lot of rural driving, and kangaroos can become a problem, so they’ll put the bull bars on. That’s how we see the market playing out in that regard, from a bumper perspective.” While the top-selling Ford Ranger (excl. Raptor) and Toyota HiLux (excl. GR Sport) feature five-star ANCAP ratings across most of their ranges, they’re also subject to older test criteria, whereas the Kia is up against the latest standards. 11. Google Reveals How It Is Using AI to Combat Online Scams in Search, Chrome and Android Google Reveals How It Is Using AI to Combat Online Scams in Search, Chrome and Android Google released a new report on Thursday highlighting how it has been combating online scams across its different products using artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The report specifically focuses on how AI technology is being implemented in Search, Google Chrome, and Android. The Mountain View-based tech giant said that generative AI is enabling it to detect and stop even previously unheard-of scams. Notably, the company is using the on-device Gemini Nano AI model in the Chrome browser to deal with website-based scams. New Ways Google Is Fighting Scams Using AI In a blog post, the tech giant announced that it has published a new Fighting Scams in Search report. The report details how Google has improved its AI-powered scam detection systems and classifiers, and claims that the new system can spot 20x the number of potential scamming websites compared to before. Website-based scams typically use fake or compromised websites to trick users into giving away money, personal information, or login credentials. While the way these scams are conducted can differ, their goal is generally to deceive users through imitation, urgency, or offers that seem too good to be true. Some examples of such scams include phishing sites, online shopping scams, investment and crypto scams, tech support scams, clone websites, and subscription traps. In Search, Google says it has improved its classifiers that detect and classify scams using AI. With these improvements, the tech giant can now de-rank these scams before any users can see them. Highlighting an example, the post mentioned that Search detected an increase in scammers impersonating airline customer service providers. The company claimed that these scams have been reduced by more than 80 percent in Search. Google Chrome has also improved the Enhanced Protection mode of Safe Browsing. The mode now supports Gemini Nano, the on-device large language model (LLM) on desktop, to add an extra layer of protection for users. The model can detect potential phishing sites and inform Google to take action on them. The company said Gemini Nano can even detect scams that have not been previously seen by distilling the complex nature of websites. “Our goal is to expand this protection to Android devices and even more types of scams in the future,” Google said. However, this does not mean the company has not added any new threat protection system on Android. Google Chrome on Android is getting a new feature to protect users from malicious website-based notifications. If the browser detects any notification from a website that can be a scam, it will instead show a warning labelled “Potential scam detected,” with an option to either unsubscribe or view the notification. If users trust the website and believe the AI-powered feature made a mistake, they can view the content that was blocked. They can also choose to allow future notifications from the website. 12. China has spent billions developing military tech. Conflict between India and Pakistan could be its first major test China has spent billions developing military tech. Conflict between India and Pakistan could be its first major test The escalating conflict between India and Pakistan could be offering the world a first real glimpse into how advanced ******** military technology performs against proven Western hardware – and ******** defense stocks are already surging. Shares of China’s AVIC Chengdu Aircraft rose 40% this week, as Pakistan claimed it used AVIC-produced J-10C jets to shoot down Indian fighter jets – including the advanced French-made Rafale – during an aerial battle on Wednesday. India has not responded to Pakistan’s claims or acknowledged any aircraft losses. When asked about the involvement of ********-made jets, a spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry said on Thursday he was not familiar with the situation. Still, as Pakistan’s primary arms supplier, China is likely watching intently to find out how its weapon systems have and potentially will perform in real combat. A rising military superpower, China hasn’t fought a major war in more than four decades. But under leader Xi Jinping, it has raced to modernize its armed forces, pouring resources into developing sophisticated weaponry and cutting-edge technologies. It has also extended that modernization drive to Pakistan, long hailed by Beijing as its “ironclad brother.” Over the past five years, China has supplied 81% of Pakistan’s imported weapons, according to data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). Those exports include advanced fighter jets, missiles, radars and air-defense systems that experts say would play a pivotal role in any military conflict between Pakistan and India. Some Pakistan-made weapons have also been co-developed with ******** firms or built with ******** technology and expertise. “This makes any engagement between India and Pakistan a de facto test environment for ******** military exports,” said Sajjan Gohel, international security director at the Asia-Pacific Foundation, a think tank based in London. ******** and Pakistani militaries have also engaged in increasingly sophisticated joint air, sea and land exercises, including combat simulations and even crew-swapping drills. “Beijing’s long-standing support for Islamabad – through hardware, training, and now increasingly AI-enabled targeting – has quietly shifted the tactical balance,” said Craig Singleton, a senior fellow at the US-based Foundation for Defense of Democracies. “This isn’t just a bilateral clash anymore; it’s a glimpse of how ******** defense exports are reshaping regional deterrence.” That shift – brought into sharp focus by rising tensions between India and Pakistan following a tourist massacre in Kashmir – underscores a broader geopolitical realignment in the region, where China has emerged as a major challenge to American influence. India and Pakistan have gone to war over Kashmir three times since their independence from Britain in 1947. During the height of the Cold War, the Soviet Union backed India, while the United States and China supported Pakistan. Now, a new era of great-power rivalry looms over the long-running conflict between the nuclear-armed South Asian rivals. Despite its traditional policy of nonalignment, India has drawn ever closer to the US, as successive American administrations courted the rising South Asian giant as a strategic counterweight to China. India has ramped up arms purchases from America and its allies, including France and Israel, while steadily reducing its reliance on Russian weaponry. Meanwhile, Pakistan has deepened ties with China, becoming its “all-weather strategic partner” and a key participant in Xi’s flagship global infrastructure project, the Belt and Road Initiative. According to SIPRI’s data, the US and China each supplied about one-third of Pakistan’s imported weapons in the late 2000s. But Pakistan has stopped buying American arms in recent years and increasingly filled its arsenal with ******** weapons. Siemon Wezeman, a senior researcher in the SIPRI Arms Transfers Program, noted that while China has been an important arms supplier to Pakistan since the mid-1960s, its current dominance largely comes from stepping into a vacuum left by the US. More than a decade ago, the US accused Pakistan of not doing enough to fight “terrorists” – including Taliban fighters – that it said were operating from or being supplied in Pakistan. Wezeman said that added to Washington’s existing frustrations over Islamabad’s nuclear program and lack of democracy. “(The US) finally found India as an alternative partner in the region. As a result, (it) more or less cut Pakistan off from US arms,” he added. “China’s arms supply on the other hand significantly increased – one can say that China used the opportunity to show itself as the only real friend and ally of Pakistan.” China has expressed regret over India’s military strikes against Pakistan and has called for calm and restraint. Before the latest escalation, ******** Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed support for Pakistan in a phone call with his counterpart, calling China Pakistan’s “ironclad friend.” A woman stands outside a house destroyed by Pakistani artillery shelling at the Salamabad village in Uri, about 110kms from Srinagar, on May 8, 2025. – Sajjad Hussain/AFP/Getty Images Military showdown With Pakistan armed largely by China and India sourcing more than half of its weapons from the US and its allies, any conflict between the two neighbors could effectively be a showdown between ******** and Western military technologies. After weeks of rising hostilities following the killing of 26 mostly Indian tourists at the hands of gunmen at a scenic mountain spot in Indian-administered Kashmir, India launched missile strikes early on Wednesday morning, targeting what it said was “terrorist infrastructure” in both Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. Many analysts believe the missiles and other munitions were fired by India’s French-made Rafale and Russian-made Su-30 fighter jets. Pakistan, meanwhile, touted a great victory by its air force, claiming that five Indian fighter jets – three Rafales, a MiG-29 and a Su-30 fighter – were shot down by its J-10C fighters during an hour-long battle it claimed was fought by 125 aircraft at ranges over 160 kilometers (100 miles). “(It) is now being characterized as the most intense air-to-air combat engagement between two nuclear-armed nations,” said Salman Ali Bettani, an international relations scholar at Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad. “The engagement represented a milestone in the operational use of advanced ********-origin systems.” India has not acknowledged any aircraft losses, and Pakistan has yet to provide evidence to support its claims. But a French Defense Ministry source said at least one of India’s newest and most-advanced warplanes – a French-made Rafale fighter jet – was lost in the battle. “If … confirmed, it indicates that the weapon systems at Pakistan’s disposal are, at the minimum, contemporary or current compared to what Western Europe (especially France) offers,” said Bilal Khan, founder of Toronto-based defense analysis firm Quwa Group Inc. Despite the absence of official confirmation and hard proof, ******** nationalists and military enthusiasts have taken to social media to celebrate what they see as a triumph for ********-made weapon systems. Shares of China’s state-owned AVIC Chengdu Aircraft, the maker of Pakistan’s J-10C fighter jets, closed 17% higher on the Shenzhen exchange on Wednesday, even before Pakistan’s foreign minister claimed the jets had been used to shoot down India’s planes. Shares in the company rose an additional 20% on Thursday. The J-10C is the latest version of China’s single-engine, multirole J-10 fighter, which entered service with the ******** air force in the early 2000s. Featuring better weapon systems and avionics, the J-10C is classified as a 4.5-generation fighter – in the same tier as the Rafale but a rung below 5th-generation stealth jets, like China’s J-20 or the US F-35. China delivered the first batch of the J-10CE – the export version – to Pakistan in 2022, state broadcaster CCTV reported at the time. It’s now the most advanced fighter jet in Pakistan’s arsenal, alongside the JF-17 Block III, a 4.5-generation lightweight fighter co-developed by Pakistan and China. The Pakistan Air Force (PAF) also operates a larger fleet of American-built F-16s, one of which was used to shoot down a Soviet-designed Indian fighter jet during a flare-up in 2019. But the PAF’s F-16s are still stuck in an early-2000s configuration – far behind the upgraded versions currently offered by the US – while the ********-made J-10CEs and JF-17 Block IIIs feature contemporary technologies such as active electronically scanned array (AESA) radars, Khan said. “So, the F-16s are still a major piece to any PAF-led reprisal, but not the central or indispensable one,” he said. Senior Col. (ret) Zhou Bo, senior fellow at Tsinghua University’s Center for International Security and Strategy in Beijing, said if ********-made J-10Cs were indeed used to shoot down the French-made Rafales, it would be “a tremendous boost of confidence in ******** weapon systems.” Zhou said it would “really raise people’s eyebrows” particularly given China has not fought a war for more than four decades. “It will potentially be a huge boost for ******** arm sales in the international market,” he said. An Indian paramilitary soldier guards along the banks of Dal Lake in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, on May 9, 2025. – Firdous Nazir/NurPhoto/Getty Images ‘A powerful advertisement’ The United States remains the world’s largest arms exporter, accounting for 43% of global weapons exports between 2020 and 2024, according to data from SIPRI. That’s more than four times the share of France, which ranks second, followed by Russia. China ranks fourth, with nearly two-thirds of its arms exports going to a single country: Pakistan. Khan, the defense analyst in Toronto, agreed the downing, if confirmed, would go a long way in promoting China’s defense industry saying there would likely be interest from “powers in the Middle East and North Africa” who typically can’t access “the most cutting-edge Western technology.” “With Russia set back as a result of its invasion of Ukraine, I’m sure the ******** have begun pushing hard at Moscow’s traditional markets – e.g., Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, and Sudan – to secure big-ticket sales.” Experts in Pakistan and China say the J-10Cs deployed by the Pakistan Air Force are likely to have been paired with the PL-15, China’s most advanced air-to-air missile – which has a reported beyond-visual-range of 200-300 kilometers (120-190 miles). The known export version has a reduced range of 145 kilometers (90 miles). Last week, amid spiraling tensions, the Pakistan Air Force released a three-minute video showcasing its warplanes. It featured the JF-17 Block III armed with PL-15 missiles, describing them as “PAF’s potent punch”. “From China’s perspective, this is essentially a powerful advertisement,” Antony Wong *****, a Macau-based military observer, said of the Pakistan claims. “It will shock even countries like the United States — just how strong is its opponent, really? This is a question that all countries potentially looking to buy fighter jets, as well as China’s regional rivals, will need to seriously reconsider: how should they face this new reality?” But some experts have expressed caution. India’s losses, if confirmed, could stem more from poor tactics and planning by the Indian Air Force than from the perceived advancements in ******** weapons. “If reports of India losing multiple jets holds up, it would raise serious questions about the IAF’s readiness, not just its platforms. The Rafales are modern, but warfighting is about integration, coordination, and survivability — not just headline acquisitions,” said Singleton, the analyst at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. What’s also not known is what intelligence India had on the PL-15. If, for instance, it believed Pakistan only possessed the shorter-range export version, Indian aircraft might have lingered in vulnerable areas. Rules of engagement may also have prevented Indian pilots from firing first, or firing back against Pakistani aircraft, according to Fabian Hoffman, a defense policy research fellow at the University of Oslo. In such cases, Indian misjudgments may have made the Pakistani weaponry look more effective, Hoffman wrote on his blog. Experts also note that India’s strikes successfully hit multiple targets in Pakistan – suggesting its missiles penetrated Pakistani air defenses, which are armed with ******** surface-to-air missiles, including the long-range HQ-9B. “If ********-origin radar or missile systems failed to detect or deter Indian strikes, that’s (also) bad optics for Beijing’s arms export credibility,” said Gohel, the defense expert in London. Weatherwatch: How AI could offer faster, affordable weather forecasting | Climate crisis Weatherwatch: How AI could offer faster, affordable weather forecasting | Climate crisis Weather forecasting has gradually been getting more and more sophisticated. It has also got far more important as the climate gets more unpredictable and extreme events threaten to cause massive economic damage and loss of life. So an early warning system is vital. Ever larger computer systems making millions of calculations over many hours are now part of the daily forecasting in most developed countries. Sadly large parts of the world, many very vulnerable to dangerous climate events, do not have the money, personnel or computing power to develop the 10-day forecasting system they need. But researchers at Cambridge University think they have found a solution by harnessing artificial intelligence. They use AI to create advanced weather forecasts which they claim outperform supercomputers and are thousands of times faster, needing only the power of a laptop. skip past newsletter promotion The planet’s most important stories. 15. ‘Tone deaf’: US tech company responsible for global IT outage to cut jobs and use AI | Software ‘Tone deaf’: US tech company responsible for global IT outage to cut jobs and use AI | Software The cybersecurity company that became a household name after causing a massive global IT outage last year has announced it will cut 5% of its workforce in part due to “AI efficiency”. In a note to staff earlier this week, released in stock market filings in the US, CrowdStrike’s chief executive, George Kurtz, announced that 500 positions, or 5% of its workforce, would be cut globally, citing AI efficiencies created in the business. “We’re operating in a market and technology inflection point, with AI reshaping every industry, accelerating threats, and evolving customer needs,” he said. Kurtz said AI “flattens our hiring curve, and helps us innovate from idea to product faster”, adding it “drives efficiencies across both the front and back office”. “AI is a force multiplier throughout the business,” he said. Other reasons for the cuts included market demand for sustained growth and expanding the product offering. The company expects to incur up to US$53m in costs as a result of the job cuts. CrowdStrike reported in March revenue of US$1bn for the fourth financial quarter of 2025, up 25% on the same quarter in 2024, with a loss of US$92m. In July last year, CrowdStrike pushed out a faulty update to its software designed to detect cybersecurity threats that brought down 8.5m Windows systems worldwide. The outage caused chaos at airports, and took down computers in hospitals, TV networks, payment systems and people’s personal computers. Aaron McEwan, vice-president of research and advisory at consultancy Gartner, said he was sceptical when companies announced AI efficiencies close to reduced revenue forecasts, as CrowdStrike had in March. “I think particularly in the tech sector … it’s a way of justifying a reduction in the workforce because [of] a financial issue,” he said. “So either they’re not tracking well financially, or they’re trying to send a message to investors that good times are around the corner. So I’m immediately sceptical.” McEwan said companies were facing pressure to deliver on the big investments made in AI. “The productivity gains that we expect to see from AI just aren’t flowing through.” Gartner research showed across workforces less than 50% of employees are using AI in their job, and only 8% of employees are using AI tools to improve productivity. Toby Walsh, professor of artificial intelligence at the University of New South Wales, said CrowdStrike’s announcement was “pretty tone deaf” after the outage last year. “They would have been better redeploying this 5% of people to emergency response and bug fixing,” he said. Walsh said the market should expect more of these announcements in future. “It’s pretty simple: more profits for companies, less work for workers. But we should learn from the first Industrial Revolution. If we stand up in solidarity, we can use these savings to improve quality and quantity of work for all.” Niusha Shafiabady, associate professor in computational intelligence at the *********** Catholic University, said AI job replacements were an “unavoidable reality”. “No matter what we believe is moral and right, this change will happen. Unfortunately, a lot of people will lose their traditional jobs to AI and technology,” she said. “If [companies] see that they are saving money by using AI and technology and enhancing their services, they will ask their employees to leave. This is the reality.” A World Economic Forum report in 2023 found nearly 23% of all jobs globally will change in the next five years due to AI and other macroeconomic trends. While 69m jobs are expected to be created, 83m jobs could be eliminated, leading to a net decrease of 2%, Shafiabady said. McEwan said companies – tech companies in particular – would be looking for ways to use AI to reduce workforces over time. “I have no doubt that there will be the emergence of companies that are able to reduce their workforce and substantially because of AI,” he said. “It’ll depend on the type of product that they’re selling. But at the moment most companies would be wise to look at how they can use AI to augment their workforce rather than replace.” Has your job been lost to AI? World’s first silicon-based quantum computer is small enough to plug into a regular power socket World’s first silicon-based quantum computer is small enough to plug into a regular power socket When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. This new quantum computer uses silicon-based spin qubits as opposed to superconducting qubits or trapped-ion qubits deployed in most other machines. | Credit: Fergal Phillips A startup has launched the first quantum device in the world that blends the potential of quantum computing with the convenience and integration of traditional high-performance computing (HPC). Equal1 representatives unveiled Bell-1 on March 16 — a new six-qubit machine that can fit seamlessly into existing HPC environments like data centers, company representatives said in a statement. The machine tips the scale at slightly more than 440 pounds (200 kilograms) but it’s rack-mountable — meaning it can be mounted onto a physical rack in a data center — and it’s roughly the same size as existing graphics processing unit (GPU) servers. Unlike other quantum computers, the Bell-1 doesn’t require specialized infrastructure to deploy, and it doesn’t need additional equipment to be cooled to near-absolute zero. Related: China achieves quantum supremacy claim with new chip 1 quadrillion times faster than the most powerful supercomputers That’s because it boasts its own self-contained, closed-cycle cryo cooling unit, which enables the system to operate at a remarkable 0.3 kelvin, or minus 459.13 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 272.85 degrees Celsius). The machine makes use of the latest semiconductor fabrication techniques as well as purified silicon, which allows for a high level of control and long coherence times (a qubit’s ability to exist in multiple states simultaneously, which is crucial for quantum algorithms and computations). Rack-mountable quantum computing The Bell-1’s qubits are silicon-based, meaning they’re smaller than conventional qubits, and the chip at the heart of the machine incorporates quantum processor units (QPUs) with Arm CPUs — traditional processors known for their small size and efficiency — and neural processing units (NPUs) — specialized processors for accelerating machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI). Incorporating all these elements onto a single chip eliminates the complex orchestration that would otherwise be necessary between classical and quantum computing elements. As long as you’ve got the space in a rack, all it requires is a standard electrical outlet: plug it in and it’s ready to work, Equal1 representatives said. Credit: Fergal Phillips The company’s chip, called the UnityQ 6-Qubit Quantum Processing System, utilizes spin qubits, in contrast to many quantum computing platforms that rely on either trapped-ion or superconducting qubits. Silicon-based spin qubits are compact, leading to potentially higher qubit density, and could leverage existing semiconductor fabrication techniques, meaning more scalability. The chip fitted into the Bell-1 also incorporates error correction, control and readout, while taking advantage of existing semiconductor infrastructure for reliability and scalability. Although this first generation of the chip includes six qubits, the company wants to make more powerful versions with a higher qubit count. The Bell-1 is also future-proof in that early adopters can upgrade existing systems as new models are rolled out, rather than replacing them with new machines, company representatives added. The Bell-1 builds on advances first published by the company in December 2024, which established new peak performance marks for silicon qubit arrays as well as quantum controller chips. These included the world’s highest recorded single-qubit and two-qubit gate fidelity (meaning fewer errors) and gate speed (meaning faster operations). The platform also utilizes a specialized, AI-powered error correction system developed in partnership with Arm. St. Louis-based restaurant chain will close its final KC area location St. Louis-based restaurant chain will close its final KC area location Lion’s Choice is closing its Liberty location at 129 S. Stewart Road near Liberty Commons. An employee working at the restaurant Wednesday told The Star that management informed staff Tuesday that the last day would be Saturday, May 17. The location was the last remaining Lion’s Choice in the Kansas City metro. The St. Louis-based chain, known for its roast beef sandwiches, closed four locations last summer in KC, Olathe, Overland Park and Lee’s Summit. “Continuing to operate one store will help us evaluate a new Kansas City market strategy, better establish the brand, and plan for future growth here and in other markets,” CEO Fred Burmer said in a statement at the time. Lion’s Choice’s history stretches back to 1967, when it was known in St. Louis as Red Lion Beef House. It expanded in that city over the following decades and entered the Kansas City market in 1999 with a location at 7337 W. 119th St. in Overland Park. That location closed in 2002. The chain returned to Kansas City in 2018. “We think this is a 12- to 15-store market,” then-CEO Mike “Kup” Kupstas told The Star at the time. The Liberty location opened in 2020. 25. Instagram Chief Says App Has Feared TikTok Threat for Years Instagram Chief Says App Has Feared TikTok Threat for Years A small portion of Instagram’s content comes from users engaging with family and friends as the app focuses more on video offerings to compete with TikTok, the platform’s chief Adam Mosseri said, seeking to fend off government claims that Meta Platforms monopolises social media. Mosseri, a longtime Meta employee who became the head of Instagram in 2018, testified Thursday that the social media market had changed “dramatically” since he first joined the company. Instagram is now locked in a fast-moving race against TikTok and competing platforms, he argued, with all offering similar features and vying for the same core audience of users under age 30. As Instagram has evolved to compete with TikTok with more video entertainment, so has the reason people come to the platform, Mosseri told a federal court in Washington during the fourth week of a US antitrust trial against Meta. Only one in six posts to Instagram’s Stories feature are now from people engaging with their friends and family, he said. TikTok’s success has emerged as key to Meta’s defense in the high-profile antitrust lawsuit by the Federal Trade Commission, which aims to break up the parent company and force it to spin off Instagram and WhatsApp. The FTC’s case hinges on proving that Meta has obtained and held a monopoly in a narrowly defined market referred to in court as “personal social networking services.” That market consists primarily of products focused on sharing things online with friends and family. On Thursday, Meta’s lawyers presented an an internal Instagram document from September 2019, which stated in all capitals, “COMPETITION FROM TIKTOK IS A BIG CONCERN.” Instagram’s researchers had noticed a slowdown in user engagement on the platform, and determined “conservatively” that 40% of the year-over-year decline in time spent on the platform was due to TikTok’s rise, the document showed. “For us, growth is everything,” Mosseri said in court. “You’re either growing, or you’re slowly dying.” In response to drops in engagement, Mosseri described the ways Meta executives sought to change Instagram to better compete with TikTok — including spending billions of dollars to develop new features, expand its workforce, and advance its artificial intelligence models. Instagram has since found the “most success” by “blending” content produced by friends and family with that of celebrities and public figures, Mosseri said. Mosseri, who had just returned from a trip to New York to attend the Met Gala, was composed in court. His testimony repeatedly elicited laughs from the courtroom, including from the FTC’s own lawyers. During his appearance, he called Meta’s purchase of Instagram “one of the best acquisitions of all time.” Earlier Thursday, the FTC unearthed Mosseri’s emails, videos he’d shared on Instagram and podcasts he’d joined over several years in a bid to show that the platform is built on relationships between friends and family. It also sought to demonstrate that the quality of Instagram declined due to a lack of investment. Mosseri, who’s held various roles at Meta — from product design to leading Facebook’s Newsfeed team to helming Instagram — offered a more conciliatory tone than other Meta employees who have testified. When the FTC’s lawyer presented a 2018 email where Mosseri had raised concerns to another executive about limited resources for Instagram’s safety work, which he called “woefully understaffed,” the executive testified, “I do think our missions are always greater than our ability to deliver on them.” Mosseri added that he always wants more resources for things like safety. The FTC also presented emails between Mosseri and Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg in June of 2018. Clarifying remarks he’d made at Zuckerberg’s home the previous weekend, Mosseri said he didn’t think Instagram should abandon its emphasis on friends and family, and focus content only around influencers and interests. “I think that’s a mistake,” Mosseri wrote. Zuckerberg, in response, said “Instagram definitely needs to continue doing friends” and will “always need to focus on friends” in addition to influencers. © 2025 Bloomberg LP (This story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is auto-generated from a syndicated feed.)
