Liverpool boss Arne Slot on Trent Alexander-Arnold future – ‘we both know where he’s going’ Liverpool boss Arne Slot on Trent Alexander-Arnold future – ‘we both know where he’s going’ Liverpool manager Arne Slot is “disappointed” to be losing “a very good full-back” in Trent Alexander-Arnold and has hinted that the England international will be joining Real Madrid. Alexander-Arnold said on Monday that he is going to bring his 20-year spell at Anfield to an end by departing the Premier League champions on a free transfer when his contract runs out on 30 June 2025. Since then, Real Madrid – the club he has been heavily linked with during the season – have approached Liverpool about signing the 26-year-old before his deal runs out so he can play at the Fifa Club World Cup, which starts on 14 June in the United States. Asked about Alexander-Arnold leaving early for the Spanish club, Slot said: “He hasn’t said anything about it himself. “For me, it’s impossible to comment on where he’s going and if that is a club that is going to play in the Club World Cup. “You see by my smile we both know where he’s going to but it hasn’t been said yet.” Liverpool won this season’s top-flight title with four games to spare and host second-placed Arsenal on Sunday (16:30 BST) with the Gunners 15 points behind them going into the final three games. Slot confirmed Northern Ireland international Conor Bradley, 21, will start at right-back against Arsenal as the Reds boss prepares for Alexander-Arnold’s exit in a situation he was used to at his previous clubs. “Like everybody who is a fan of Liverpool, we’re disappointed for him leaving because not only a good human being is leaving the club but also a very, very good full-back is leaving us as well,” said Slot as he spoke for the first time on Alexander-Arnold’s decision to leave. “I also worked at clubs like AZ Alkmaar and Feyenoord where every season a good player, or multiple good players have left the club. I’m a bit more used to players leaving. “If a very good player is leaving then the next player will step up and that’s probably what’s going to happen now.” Source link #Liverpool #boss #Arne #Slot #Trent #AlexanderArnold #future #hes Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

As Canada and Europe look to partner on defence, what could that look like? – National As Canada and Europe look to partner on defence, what could that look like? – National As U.S. President Donald Trump continues to cast doubt on the future of the NATO military alliance, Canada is looking to partner with the European Union on defence. Here’s a closer look at what’s driving this major shift in transatlantic relations. What problem is Europe trying to solve? Trump has said that Washington won’t necessarily defend NATO allies — a threat that undermines the entire point of the alliance, said defence policy analyst Federico Santopinto. Story continues below advertisement “Europeans feel very vulnerable without the United States,” said Santopinto, a senior researcher at the Paris-based French Institute for International and Strategic Affairs. He said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine revealed just how much the continent had come to depend on American defence spending. While European nations have spent roughly the same as the U.S. on military aid for Kyiv, Washington has provided Ukraine with indispensable intelligence and surveillance and reconnaissance equipment that Europe lacks. 1:51 Canada election 2025: Carney promises to revamp defence procurement When the U.S. and Germany — alarmed by the prospect of direct conflict with Moscow — prevented Ukraine from using American and ******* weapons to hit targets deep within Russia, many EU nations saw how their own hands might be tied if they needed to use donated gear in some future conflict. “The war in Ukraine taught everybody that when you wage war, you need to be sovereign over the weapons you have,” Santopinto said. Story continues below advertisement In addition, much of Europe’s defence market is fragmented. Many EU nations own military equipment that isn’t interoperable, leaving capacity gaps across the continent, particularly in air defence. The EU does not have an army but it can help to structure the continent’s military industries. ********* officials have sought to reduce their reliance on American gear — particularly since Trump mused in March about selling allies “toned-down” versions of fighter planes with fewer capabilities than U.S. aircraft. For more than a year, Canada and the EU have been in talks about a possible “security and defence partnership.” Brussels has signed such deals with Japan and South Korea, but they largely focused on joint naval exercises. The deal with Canada would involve defence procurement, according to officials on both sides of the Atlantic. Story continues below advertisement In a white paper released in March outlining the EU’s approach to defence industries, the European Union said that “our co-operation with Canada has intensified and should be further enhanced … including on respective initiatives to boost defence industry production.” Christian Leuprecht, a political science professor at Queen’s University and the Royal Military College, said both sides can build on the fact that “European companies already invest fairly heavily and extensively in Canada, including on defence.” What is the EU doing to boost defence? In March, the European Commission unveiled ReArm Europe, a plan that would earmark up to the equivalent of C$1.25 trillion for defence over five years. Get breaking National news For news impacting Canada and around the world, sign up for breaking news alerts delivered directly to you when they happen. It’s not a subsidy program but would provide loans and allow member states to take on more debt to spend on defence, without triggering the restrictions the EU imposes on members with excessive deficits. Story continues below advertisement Santopinto said EU countries determined to cut back spending due to the high cost of borrowing aren’t likely to take on more debt, ReArm notwithstanding. Still, ReArm proposes a loan program worth about $235 billion to be called Security Action For Europe, or SAFE, which would allow countries to work with others outside the European Union to jointly buy or build arms. 1:31 NATO’s Rutte says the alliance needs to produce more weapons The program is still being negotiated and might only allow such partnerships with countries that have signed security and defence agreements with the EU. Canada does not yet have such an agreement. Prime Minister Mark Carney was elected on a platform that promised to advance “Canada’s involvement in the ReArm Europe plan in support of transatlantic security.” Leuprecht said “even a fraction of that money” being spent on ReArm would be a lifeline for a ********* economy struggling under the weight of American tariffs. Story continues below advertisement Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said a month ago that she expects a defence deal with Europe “in the coming months.” She said the deal could be very good for aerospace and artificial intelligence companies in Montreal and Davie Shipbuilding near Quebec City. How do individual countries feel? Reports have emerged in recent months of a split among EU members on how the SAFE loan program should function — and whether it could be used to make joint purchases with Canada and the U.K. France has for years called for Europe to have “strategic autonomy” in defence. Santopinto said France — which has a large domestic weapons industry — has pushed for Europe to make most or all of its own military equipment. France has tried to work around an American law that limits its exports of arms produced with certain U.S. parts. Story continues below advertisement Santopinto said Poland and nations like Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania — countries on Russia’s doorstep — would prefer to see the U.S. continue to take an active role in Europe’s defence. Other EU nations, including Germany and the Netherlands, have indicated an openness to linking the EU’s military supply chains with like-minded countries. Separately, Germany and Norway have proposed partnering with Canada to procure new submarines — a project that would give Ottawa earlier access to the vessels and help it meet its NATO spending targets. Norway is not a member of the EU. Why does Europe sign deals with other countries? Santopinto said the EU wants to use the clout it enjoys due to the size of its market to set military procurement standards that would make it easier for European armies to work together. Trending Now WestJet suspends 9 U.S. routes due to lower demand What Canada could learn from Trump’s new trade deal with U.K. “It’s a way for European Union to become a more strong actor in the field of armament” through “a new alternative of industrial defence policy to the domination of the United States,” he said. Story continues below advertisement The EU has used its economic clout and population to set standards in other areas that have been adopted globally — such as the requirement that websites seek permission to gather personalized information. 0:35 Trump wants NATO members to increase defence spend goal from 2% to 5% Leuprecht said Canada can offer Europe a place to produce arms with much cheaper energy, and access to data centres required to run some military technology. “It’s an opportunity for Canada to contribute to deterrence, by strengthening those relationships with our European partners and (by) Russia knowing that Canada will be there for our European partners,” he said. Is Canada a good partner? Ottawa’s allies have for years pressed Canada to reach the NATO member defence spending guideline of two per cent of gross domestic product — a target Ottawa has not met since the alliance set it in 2006. Story continues below advertisement That pressure has been mounting since Russia launched its war on Ukraine — and particularly since Trump started suggesting the U.S. might not come to the defence of NATO allies that don’t meet the target. Fearing that territorial gains in Ukraine will embolden Moscow to invade countries like Latvia — where ********* troops are serving as part of a deterrence mission — European countries are already debating increasing the NATO spending target to 2.5 or three per cent. EU officials frequently say Canada is among their closest partners and has shared values. Ottawa is already party to EU programs like PESCO that allow for some defence-industry collaboration. But Leuprecht pointed out that European leaders have stayed largely quiet about Trump’s talk of annexing Canada. 9:42 Could Canada’s military spending be fast-tracked? “The stunning silence … tells you a whole lot about the view of Europeans with regards to Canada’s reliability,” he said. Story continues below advertisement Leuprecht blames that silence on what he considers Canada’s insufficient defence spending and its failure to export energy like liquefied natural gas across the Atlantic. He said he suspects this is why one-third of EU states still haven’t fully ratified the bloc’s trade deal with Canada. Canada’s economy is about as large as Russia’s, he said, but Moscow is much more effective at advancing its strategic goals. “There is a widespread belief in Europe that Canada has not been a reliable and reputable partner when Europe has needed Canada,” Leuprecht said, adding it would be harder for Canada to miss defence spending targets when they’re set with another country. “Here is an opportunity for Canada to demonstrate to Europe that we are prepared to be the reliable partner that we have been in the past.” Are Europeans looking to leave NATO? Not according to the latest official joint report on EU-Canada relations, published last month. Story continues below advertisement “Canada and the EU recognize NATO as the primary collective defence organization for members of the alliance, and continue to encourage increased co-operation between the EU and NATO to further benefit from the experience and expertise of each organization,” reads the government report. Leuprecht said the EU’s white paper is aimed at complementing NATO so that Europe meets U.S. demands to do more without losing Washington’s security guarantee. That arrangement is in Canada’s interest, he said. “If the European Union goes it alone, Canada’s value to Europe will decline precipitously,” he said, arguing this would probably leave Ottawa almost entirely reliant on Washington. Santopinto said Europe wants Canada to help preserve NATO. “They could show that there is a democratic western front that is still existing, despite this strange and erratic attitude of the United States,” he said. All of these matters are expected to be on the agenda at the NATO summit in June, which both Carney and Trump are expected to attend. “This might possibly be the single most important NATO summit ever,” Leuprecht said. Apple to play modest role after datacentre heat breakthrough in Denmark Apple to play modest role after datacentre heat breakthrough in Denmark Danish engineers are drawing up plans to connect an Apple datacentre to a district heating network in Denmark that will use its waste energy to heat homes and provide hot water. This comes a decade after the US phone giant announced plans to build one capable of community integration, and five years after it started operating. The breakthrough arrived after the Danish parliament agreed, in January, to scrap a price cap on waste industrial heat that deterred district heating operators from plugging datacentres into their networks. With a final parliamentary bill wanting, but a government pledge it will be enforced by 1 July still standing, community firms are exhuming plans for major industrial heat re-use projects. But while datacentres have been a focus for political campaigners and industry lobbies, demanding the immense waste heat the computer facilities emit be put to good use, the possibility of doing so looks severely limited. The breakthrough’s greater benefit may be in the public image of datacentre operators, say Danish industry experts. Morten Abildgaard, CEO of Viborg Varme, the district heating company working with Apple on its Danish datacentre, told Computer Weekly it plans to invest in a €50m heat pipe and equipment needed to feed heat from the industrial park housing Apple’s datacentre, 4.5km out of Viborg, to residents in the city. This is 10 years after the US firm first offered it. “Now they have decided to remove the price ceiling,” he said. “We are back on track. With the surplus heat [Apple] say we can expect to get, we have a feasible business case. We are not able to find a better heat source in winter time. “Right now, I’m working with our engineers, finalising the technical details. I believe we can start construction on 1 October. It’s the most feasible option,” added Abildgaard, in comparison with the wood incinerators, air and water heat pumps, and even solar energy, the heat network already uses. Even natural gas, with Denmark planning a tax to phase out fossil fuels and future price increases expected, was not as feasible as datacentre heat. Yet little of Apple’s heat might end up being used, with the rest being exhausted “for the sparrows” on the roof, as the Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy put it when declaring in January that its political breakthrough might allow all datacentre exhaust to heat homes. Danish heat networks have sources of much greater utility than lukewarm datacentre exhaust, according to experts. And Danish law requires heat networks to use the cheapest sources they can get. The Apple datacentre is operating at a capacity of only about 7MW, according to Apple’s 2025 Environmental progress report. But Viborg expects it eventually to produce an over-abundance. “If you look at the full scale of the datacentre, when it’s fully built, it will produce far more heat than we could ever use,” said Abildgaard, even with the network’s peak winter demand averaging 70MW. Yet still Apple won’t heat the whole city, as Viborg wants multiple sources so its residents need never depend solely on one. “If we are in that lucky situation and we have a lot of surplus heat sources, we would like to choose the best ones, and that means the hottest ones,” he said. Contract negotiations District heating firm DIN Forsyning has little expectation of using datacentre heat despite being in contract negotiations with several datacentre operators for whom its City of Varde is a choice location. The city has international fibre internet connections and a high-power electricity grid fed with green electricity from the North Sea, said DIN Forsyning business development manager Claus Nielsen. DIN is meanwhile counting on two hydrogen electrolysers, adding to one already in its catchment. District heating firms moreover tended to already have invested in other sources. “That’s the reason why we’re a little bit resistant to datacentres,” he said. “Because maybe we’ll get better-grade energy from hydrogen production. “We also have some food production where we can do heat extraction at higher temperatures, so we’re a little bit on hold in terms of how to manage [datacentres],” said Nielsen. “If you already have technologies that are sustainable and efficient then the economic value of using [datacentre] heat is quite low.” The electrolysers alone would supply more heat than the district could use. DIN was therefore exploring ways to use it for other things such as greenhouses. The heat firm is, however, investing in heat infrastructure to connect a planned 30MW datacentre. But that will feed only 1,700 homes initially, and perhaps 5,000 when fully operational, said press statements. That would turn about 23-70% of energy consumed by the datacentre into heat to serve about 4-10% of homes on the network, assuming it operated at half capacity when fully built. Another datacentre being built in DIN’s catchment will feed most of its heat to a greenhouse. Officials and heat experts were unanimous in their praise for the government removing the cap. Heat, energy and data industries alike celebrated it as a means to cut fossil fuels. Gaining kudos Henrik Hansen, director of the Danish Data Center Industry association, said datacentre operators got no benefit from it themselves bar the kudos, but that was not an insignificant gain. “As a datacentre operator, you like to have these projects going, but it’s not business-critical,” he said. “It’s a way of engaging with the local community, producing this heat, and hopefully replacing some fossil energy sources used to heat up the houses. “It’s a good narrative and a good enabler for bringing down your footprint and your climate impact, which is very important [for] datacentres today – to have a good relationship with the local community.” Source link #Apple #play #modest #role #datacentre #heat #breakthrough #Denmark Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Hat-trick hero Botic sends Western into ALM semis Hat-trick hero Botic sends Western into ALM semis Western United will meet Melbourne City in the A-League Men semi-finals after star striker Noah Botic’s hat-trick inspired a 3-2 elimination final comeback win over Adelaide. John Aloisi’s charges will meet City in back-to-back legs at AAMI Park after beating the Reds – in what proved departing Adelaide coach Carl Veart’s final game – in a pulsating encounter before 3078 fans at Ironbark Fields. It was third-placed United’s first men’s final at their Tarneit base, and they won’t play there again this season. Reds striker Luka Jovanovic, deputising for injured golden boot winner Archie Goodwin, headed Adelaide in front after just three minutes. But Botic’s deflected strike in the 20th minute put Western level, then he delivered the lead 11 minutes later. On his finals debut, Socceroos aspirant Botic sealed his first senior hat-trick with a wonderful finish in the 63rd minute, with Tony Popovic’s assistant Hayden Foxe among those watching on. Botic, 23, is just the third United ALM player to score a hat-trick, and the youngest of five finals hat-trick scorers in league history. Stefan Mauk gave Adelaide a pulse in the 79th minute but Western held their nerve. The hosts’ night was soured by an injury to veteran centre-back James Donachie, who suffered an adductor strain and was immediately substituted for Tate Russell in the 13th minute. Things were looking peachy for Adelaide, who just sneaked into sixth place ahead of Sydney FC, when Javi Lopez whipped a wicked cross into the near post, where Jovanovic beat Matt Sutton with a wicked bullet header. The goal kicked Western into action and they dominated proceedings. Their goal arrived when an attempted Adelaide clearance deflected off Rhys Bozinovski and toward Botic, who neatly turned and shot. The ball took a deflection off Bart Vriends to beat Max Vartuli. For Western’s second, Bozinovski brilliantly won possession from Ethan Alagich in the middle of the park, drove forward and worked the ball to Angus Thurgate. The midfielder unleashed a wonderful cross-field ball to Riku Danzaki, who flicked it on for Botic to take a touch and beat Vartuli at his near post. For Botic’s third, Danzaki slipped the striker through on the edge of the box and he took a touch before rifling home with his left. Adelaide revived their night when Dylan Pierias burst down the right and whipped in a cross, with Mauk steaming in at the back post to score. Vartuli brilliantly denied Hiroshi Ibusuki in the 83rd minute but Adelaide couldn’t conjure an equaliser. Live Updates: India-Pakistan Conflict Intensifies Into Most Expansive in Decades Live Updates: India-Pakistan Conflict Intensifies Into Most Expansive in Decades The risk of an all-out war between India and Pakistan rose this week, despite diplomatic attempts to defuse the fighting after a deadly terrorist attack two weeks ago in Kashmir, a region that the two nations have fought over since 1947. Civilians were killed on Wednesday as India struck deeper into Pakistan than it had before. Deadly gunfire and shelling were exchanged along the disputed border on Thursday. As that continued on Friday, Pakistani drones struck Indian soil, the Indian military said. Here is what to know about the longstanding tensions between India and Pakistan, the attack in Kashmir, this week’s clashes and the attempts to resolve the conflict. What’s the latest in the fighting? The Indian military said on Friday that Pakistan had launched attacks using drones and other weapons along its western border and that it had thwarted those attacks. Pakistan rejected those claims. India responded by striking Pakistan’s air defense systems and radars. Pakistan has accused India of what it called ******** aggression and said that its forces had shot down more than two dozen Indian drones that had entered Pakistan’s airspace. In the rapidly developing situation, the claims from both sides could not be independently verified. Missiles and gunfire have flown over the countries’ shared border since Thursday, killing civilians on both sides. VideoAfter Indian forces struck Pakistan and its side of the disputed Kashmir region, Pakistani military officials said they had begun a forceful response.CreditCredit…M.D. Mughal/Associated Press On Wednesday, the Indian government said that its forces had struck sites in Pakistani territory. Pakistani military officials said that they had downed Indian planes. They added that the jets had not entered Pakistan’s airspace while conducting their attacks on Pakistan. More than 20 people were killed after six sites were hit on the Pakistan-controlled side of Kashmir and in the Punjab province of Pakistan, the country’s military officials said. At least 10 people have been killed in shelling from the Pakistani side since India carried out its strikes, residents of the India-controlled part of Kashmir said. What is being done to stop the fighting? Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with leaders from both countries on Thursday and emphasized the need for “immediate de-escalation,” according to State Department accounts of the calls. There was a flurry of diplomatic meetings in New Delhi and Islamabad on Thursday. Top diplomats from Iran and Saudi Arabia, crucial regional players who have close ties to both of the warring countries, were in New Delhi for meetings. The diplomatic push was centered around the hope that the heaviest military engagement could be contained to the actions on early Wednesday. Both sides could plausibly claim victory, as India struck deeper into Pakistan than it had at any point in recent decades, and Pakistan downed several Indian planes. Diplomats and analysts expressed some hope that the day’s events might offer the two sides an offramp. The question now is whether Pakistan will decide that it must answer India’s strikes in Punjab, the Pakistani heartland, with an attack of its own on Indian soil. What happened in the Kashmir attack? On April 22, militants shot and killed 26 people in the Baisaran Valley in Kashmir. Another 17 were injured. Except for one local Kashmiri man, a government tally of the dead showed that all were Hindu tourists. Accounts from the injured and survivors suggested many were targeted after they were asked about their religion. The attack, which occurred near Pahalgam, a town in the southern part of Indian-administered Kashmir, was one of the worst on Indian civilians in decades. A group calling itself the Resistance Front emerged on social media to take responsibility. Indian officials privately say the group is a proxy for Lashkar-e-Taiba, a terrorist organization based in Pakistan. In Kashmir, Indian security forces have begun a sweeping clampdown, arresting thousands of people. What is Operation Sindoor? India has named its military action Operation Sindoor. Sindoor, or vermilion powder, is a traditional marker of the marital status of Hindu women. Married women wear it either in the parting of their hair or on their foreheads, and they wipe it off if they become widowed. During the April 22 terrorist attack, many women lost their husbands, who were targeted because they were Hindu. The Indian government’s choice of the name Operation Sindoor signaled its intention to avenge the widowed women. “Operation Sindoor” also signals to right-wing Hindu groups — many of which favor more traditionally defined gender roles — that the Hindu nationalist government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is listening to their demands for vengeance. But some feminists have criticized the use of the word sindoor. Hindu nationalism is predominantly driven by a male view of the world, said V. Geetha, a feminist historian who writes about gender, caste and class. “Women figure in it as objects to be protected or as mother figures goading their men to prove their heroism,” Ms. Geetha said. What are the origins of the dispute? The roots of the Kashmir conflict trace back to the 1947 partition of British India, which led to the creation of a predominantly Hindu India and a predominantly ******* Pakistan. In October of that year, the Hindu monarch of the *******-majority princely state of Kashmir acceded to India, but Pakistan laid claim to the territory and sought to take it by military force. A U.N.-brokered agreement in 1949 established a cease-fire line, dividing Kashmir. After wars in 1965 and 1971, the cease-fire line became the Line of Control, with India possessing about two-thirds of Kashmir and Pakistan the rest. But the dispute remains unresolved. Here is a timeline of the decades of tensions between India and Pakistan over Kashmir. Has Pakistan supported militancy in Kashmir? An insurgency in the Indian-administered part of Kashmir began in the 1980s, primarily driven by local grievances, with Pakistan eventually supporting some groups, experts say. Among the Kashmir-focused insurgent groups that emerged, some supported independence for the region, while others wanted the Indian side of Kashmir to be taken over by Pakistan. In the 1990s, Pakistan provided training and other support to several militant groups operating in Kashmir and within Pakistan. This involvement was later acknowledged by several senior Pakistani officials, including the former military ruler Pervez Musharraf. The spike in insurgency in the 1990s forced an exodus of Kashmir’s ********* Hindus, a large number of them leaving for New Delhi and other cities after facing targeted attacks. The insurgency began to ease around 2002, as Pakistan banned Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Muhammad, another major militant group, although Lashkar-e-Taiba continued to operate under aliases. A cease-fire was declared and a peace process with India was initiated, a shift that some observers linked to pressure by the United States after its post-9/11 intervention in Afghanistan. The peace process collapsed after attacks in Mumbai, India, in 2008, which killed 166 people and were attributed to Lashkar-e-Taiba. What is Kashmir’s status now? Since war last broke out in 1999, Kashmir has remained one of the most militarized places in the world. India and Pakistan have come to the brink of war several times, including in 2019, when a suicide bombing in Kashmir killed at least 40 Indian soldiers. In 2019, the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi revoked a part of the Indian constitution that had given semi-autonomy to the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The move, to fully integrate Jammu and Kashmir, as India’s portion of the region is known, was part of his Hindu nationalist agenda. Pakistan condemned India’s moves. But violent unrest has broken out in the part of Kashmir controlled by Pakistan, too. Protests there have reflected a general feeling of dissatisfaction with Pakistani rule. Direct rule by India dampened the outbreaks of violence in the portion of Kashmir it controlled. Voting also resumed last year. But discontent with Mr. Modi’s party, particularly for how heavily it polices the lives of Kashmiris, remains. John Yoon contributed reporting. Defensive Sectors Continue to Lead US Stock Market This Year Defensive Sectors Continue to Lead US Stock Market This Year President Trump announced a US-*** trade deal yesterday, which may be an early sign of a thaw in the global trade war. Talks between China and the US scheduled for this weekend could bring more good news. However, with tariffs still in place, sentiment in the US equity market remains cautious, based on a review of equity sectors via a set of ETFs through yesterday’s close (May 8). Although the broad US stock market has rebounded sharply in recent weeks, the recovery has yet to reverse a wide lead for defensive equities. Utilities () are the top sector performer year to date, posting a 6.6% increase. American shares overall () are still down so far this year, shedding 3.3%. That’s dramatically better than the 15% loss in early April, but there’s still a long way to go for the market to regain its world-beating momentum that was on display as recently as January. It’s telling that the worst-performing sector this year is consumer discretionary stocks (), which are down 10%. By contrast, consumer staples () are up 4.1% so far in 2025. A key reason for the gap: expectations that consumer spending will take a hit, or at least be redirected away from non-essential purchases as tariffs lift prices in the months ahead. A new survey by the Federal Reserve finds that companies are planning to pass cost increases from tariffs on to consumers. “The bottom line is that inflation will be rising significantly over the next six months,” predicts Apollo Global Management chief economist Torsten Slok. Meanwhile, recent consumer survey data points to elevated anxiety about higher prices, which implies that headwinds for consumer spending may be brewing. “Having both firms and consumers saying prices are going to go up is not a good combination for the Fed,” said Diane Swonk, the chief economist at KPMG. “It’s yet another thing keeping them from doing anything with interest rates until they get more clarity on what the actual impacts are.” Anticipating higher prices, consumers appear to be frontrunning purchases to avoid tariff-related hikes. A survey published this week from the National Retail Federation shows that retail sales grew in April. “Spending rose again in April, driven largely by consumers continuing to pull purchases forward to stay ahead of tariffs that will inevitably lead to higher prices,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “Despite declines in confidence caused by the economic uncertainty that has come with tariffs, consumer fundamentals remain intact, supported by low unemployment, slower-but-steady income growth and solid household finances. Consumers maintain their ability to spend and have strong reasons to spend now before tariffs can drive up prices or cause shortages on store shelves.” To be fair, there’s a lot of uncertainty about how tariffs will affect the economy, including consumer spending. These are still early days and so debate rages about how events will evolve in the months ahead. What is clear is that the stock market is still pricing in higher risk for consumer discretionary stocks (XLY) while redirecting investment flows into consumer staples and other defensive equity sectors. Animal spirits may be laying the groundwork for a comeback, but it’ll take stronger news than yesterday’s US-*** trade deal to persuade the crowd that tariff risk is fading in a big way. Perhaps this weekend’s US-China talks will help move the needle. Two porn sites investigated for suspected age check failings Two porn sites investigated for suspected age check failings Ofcom has launched investigations into two pornographic sites it believes may be falling foul of the ***’s newly introduced child safety rules. The regulator said two companies – including one running a so-called “nudifying” service – had failed to detail how they were preventing children from accessing their platforms. Ofcom announced in January that, in order to comply with the Online Safety Act, all websites on which pornographic material could be found had to introduce “robust” age-checking techniques by July. It said the two services it was investigating did not appear to have any effective means of checking the age of users. Firms found to be in breach of the Act face huge fines. The regulator said on Friday that many services had, as required, provided details of “highly effective age assurance methods” they were planning to implement. They added that this “reassuringly” included some of the largest services that fall under the rules. It said a small number of services had also blocked *** users entirely to prevent children accessing them, it said. The two companies it is investigating did not respond to its request for information or show they had plans to introduce age checks. The “nudifying” technology one of them features involves the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to create the impression of having removed a person’s clothing in an image or video. The Children’s Commissioner recently called on the government to introduce a total ban on such AI apps that could be used to create ********* explicit images of children. All websites where a user might encounter pornographic material are required to demonstrate the robustness of the measures they are taking to verify the age of users. These could include requiring *** users to provide photo ID or running credit card checks. These could even apply to some social media platforms, Ofcom told the BBC in January. The rules are expected to change the way many *** adults will use or encounter some digital services, such as porn sites. “As age checks start to roll out in the coming months, adults will start to notice a difference in how they access certain online services,” said Dame Melanie Dawes, Ofcom’s chief executive, in January. In April, Discord said it would start testing face-scanning as a way to verify some users’ ages in the *** and Australia. Experts said it marked “the start of a ******* shift” for platforms as lawmakers worldwide look to impose strict internet safety rules. Critics suggest such measures risk pushing young people to “darker corners” of the internet where there are smaller, less regulated sites hosting more violent or explicit material. Government launches £8.2m plan to encourage girls into AI
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Government launches £8.2m plan to encourage girls into AI Government launches £8.2m plan to encourage girls into AI The government has plans to increase the number of girls taking maths at A-level in a bid to encourage more girls into careers in artificial intelligence (AI). The Department for Education (DfE) is investing £8.3m, as part of the government’s Advanced Maths Support Programme, in offering support to 400 disadvantaged secondary schools in England in the hopes of getting thousands of girls into advanced maths classes. Education secretary Bridget Phillipson explained this investment in underprivileged areas aims to close the “barriers to opportunity” for certain pupils who may otherwise not consider a maths qualification or AI career: “Today’s brightest maths minds are tomorrow’s AI pioneers, and this government is opening the door for groups who have so far been left behind in the AI revolution.” Unfortunately, a child’s socio-economic background can stand between them and certain educational pathways, and digital exclusion across the *** means approximately 1.7 million households in the *** have no internet access, further exacerbating the *** technology sector’s diversity gap. This only serves to cause problems in the future – with AI already in danger of being built with inherent bias, there are concerns that if the teams developing AI technologies are not diverse, the probability of systems being created with bias will only increase. As highlighted by the DfE, only a third of the pupils who currently take maths at A-Level are girls, and women only make up around 22% of those working in AI or related careers. The DfE’s new investment is part of the government’s Plan for Change laid out in December of 2024, part of which aims to level the playing field when it comes to education across the country to make sure children are given equal access to education regardless of their socio-economic background or where in England they are from. The government is particularly focused on this due to its AI opportunities action plan, which lays out how it plans to increase AI adoption, create AI jobs and bolster the ***’s economic growth. Ensuring more girls are able to gain support to study maths at an advanced level, including skills needed for a career in AI in the future, tackles both the government’s plans for providing equal access to education and for developing the skills the *** will need for future careers. Girls are often deterred from tech careers, partly because they feel the subjects they would need to study for a technology career in the future are “too hard”, though some admit to going on to regret the decision not to take these subjects. Starting in September, the recently updated Advanced Maths Support Programme will feature both teacher and student training surrounding the maths skills needed for an AI career, to ensure teachers are capable of delivering these skills, and girls are aware of what is involved in an AI-led future. To further develop the education system to reflect the ongoing need for digital and AI skills, the education secretary has implemented a group of experts to advise on how best to achieve this goal for students between the ages of five and 18. The plan to get more girls into AI careers via accessible maths education was one of the recommendations already made by the Digital, AI and Technology Task and Finish Group, made up of experts from organisations such as University College London, the Raspberry Pi Computing Education Research Centre at the University of Cambridge, and the BCS Schools and Colleges Committee. Science secretary Peter Kyle said of the plan: “AI is the defining technology of our generation, improving our public services, sparking fresh economic growth, and unlocking the jobs of the future. We can only harness that potential if we have a pipeline of talent equipped with the skills they need for the jobs of tomorrow. “This package of support will help us deliver our Plan for Change and do exactly that. This is the first step in our plan to give every young person in the country the opportunity to develop the tools which will put them front and centre in delivering our AI-powered future.” Source link #Government #launches #8.2m #plan #encourage #girls Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] -
The Old Country’s “Focused, linear experience” Is Clear Mutiny Against Every Game Studio’s Open World Obsession The Old Country’s “Focused, linear experience” Is Clear Mutiny Against Every Game Studio’s Open World Obsession We just got a gameplay trailer and release date reveal for ******: The Old Country, and there are some pleasant surprises. Set in 1900s Sicily, the game will be a long-awaited return to the franchise, and in a surprising twist, it will not be open world at all. Hangar 13’s latest entry in the long-running franchise strips things back to basics. With a promise of a tightly crafted, linear story, we can expect more than just the same old formula that most developers these days use. The best part about all this is the fact that the game will cost $50. Not only is that good in terms of being consumer-friendly, but 2025’s biggest hits so far have been $50 games. So this is surely a good sign. ******: The Old Country isn’t an open-world game, and that’s why it’ll be good Nick Baynes, President of Hangar 13, calls ******: The Old Country a “focused, linear experience.” The game follows Enzo Favara, a young Sicilian who takes the oath and climbs the ranks of Don Torrisi’s criminal empire. Set in early 1900s Sicily, we can expect a deeply cinematic story that has all the elements of a good ****** adventure. ******: The Old Country is only $50 The trend of more affordable cheap lower cost games that are 40-50 keeps going pic.twitter.com/CL8Fbtin8j — Pyo 5⃣ (@mrpyo1) May 8, 2025 The fact that it’s a linear game and not open-world is a pleasant surprise, though. In an industry where more new AAA games are trying to be the next big 100-hour experience, that’s practically heresy. From Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and Assassin’s Creed Shadows to even Grand Theft Auto 6, the genre has a chokehold on the industry, but how many games is too many? Publisher 2K’s president, David Ismailer, said it best: “We think there’s a large audience for compelling stories that don’t require massive time commitments.” The game’s $49.99 price for the standard edition is also a refreshing take that has recently been popularized. ******: The Old Country is only $50 The trend of more affordable cheap lower cost games that are 40-50 keeps going pic.twitter.com/CL8Fbtin8j — Pyo 5⃣ (@mrpyo1) May 8, 2025 When big AAA studios are asking us up to $80 for their games, the biggest hits of 2025 have been priced at this lower point. The game will join the likes of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Split Fiction, and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 in the lineup of $50 hits this year. Not every game needs to follow the big trends It might be one of the better games of 2025. | Image Credit: Hangar 13 This doesn’t mean The Old Country lacks depth. On the contrary, Hangar 13 is using Unreal Engine 5 to bring Sicily to life with meticulous detail. The newly released gameplay footage reveals brutal hand-to-hand combat, authentic weaponry, era-appropriate vehicles, and even horseback traversal. That’s not to say a linear story is guaranteed to succeed. Like any design choice, it comes with trade-offs. But what ******: The Old Country does so well is make its intentions clear from the start. We aren’t given an illusion of what we’re getting, just a promise of quality over quantity. This is a rare honesty for us in a world where devs fill their big worlds and ignore everything else. Some of the most beloved games in history, like The Last of Us, Bioshock, and Uncharted, were unapologetically linear. They succeeded not in spite of being linear, but because of it. Do you think ******: The Old Country can join the growing list of hit games in 2025? Let us know your thoughts in the comments! Goldman Sachs says this ride-hailing stock is a buy after a strong earnings report Goldman Sachs says this ride-hailing stock is a buy after a strong earnings report Goldman Sachs is bullish on Lyft following its latest earnings report. Analyst Eric Sheridan upgraded the ride-hailing stock to buy from neutral. Sheridan’s 12-month price target of $20, up from $19, implies that shares could rally 54% from Thursday’s close. Lyft posted adjusted EBITDA of $106.5 million for the first quarter, beating FactSet’s estimate of $92.4 million. The company’s gross bookings growth accelerated to 15% year over year, supported by “a rapid cadence of product innovation in consumer offerings and rising driver supply affinity enhancing the forward growth trajectory,” Sheridan wrote. Lyft guided for ride bookings to rise again in the mid-teens in the second quarter. The company also increased its share repurchase to $750 million from $500 million. Shares rallied more than 12% in the premarket following the report. LYFT YTD mountain LYFT YTD chart “While short-term debates will likely stay rooted in industry trends around rideshare pricing, market share fluctuations, positioning against the [autonomous vehicles] theme and/or any changes in consumer discretionary behavior, we believe that shares are dislocated from LYFT’s earnings power in the next 2-3 years and upgrade the stock to Buy,” the analyst wrote. “We …expect that AV operators and fleet owners will continue to enter into partnerships in the coming years and that LYFT has an important role to play in the broader hybrid/AV ecosystem (incl. for demand generation and fleet management),” Sheridan said. “We believe that the North America ridesharing duopoly industry structure is supportive of rational competitive behavior in the years ahead (all while we expect the category to grow double-digits).” Despite Sheridan’s upgrade, most analysts are neutral on the stock. Premier League predictions: Chris Sutton v grime stars Footsie & Strategy Premier League predictions: Chris Sutton v grime stars Footsie & Strategy Arsenal were really good against Paris St-Germain on Wednesday, and I was impressed by how brave they were, but they still went out of the Champions League. There will be Gunners fans out there who will think they should be winning more trophies than they have managed under Mikel Arteta, who has still not added to the FA Cup he lifted in his first season, 2019-20. Arsenal are still heading in the right direction but the biggest problem for me has been their recruitment, especially for them to not sign a striker last summer. There are such fine margins between success and failure at the highest level, and you need someone to put away your chances in the biggest games. They basically admitted that by trying to sign Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa in January and if anyone or anything is to blame for another trophyless season, then that’s where it lies. Now Arsenal need to refocus and make sure they don’t let second place slip away. This game obviously is not the title decider that some people may have anticipated earlier in the season, but I still feel both sides will be desperate to win it. It’s just a shame that, from Liverpool’s point of view, it might be over-shadowed by the reaction to Trent Alexander-Arnold’s announcement he is leaving the club. There is this debate surrounding Alexander-Arnold now, and whether he should start at Anfield this weekend or play for the club again at all, and also what kind of reception he will get if he does. No-one can tell Liverpool fans, or fans of any club, what to think – myself included – but we can all have an opinion on this whether we support them or not, and I think some of the reaction to this whole saga has been completely over the top. Fair-minded people will look at Alexander-Arnold as someone who has given over 20 years service to his boyhood club after rising through the ranks, but just wants a different challenge at Real Madrid, the biggest club in the world, and the most successful one in terms of winning European Cups and Champions Leagues. If they were in the same position, what would they do? You have always got your die-hards who are not going to change or see things anyone else’s way, but Alexander-Arnold does not deserve the ridiculous abuse he is getting. In terms of the game itself, I really don’t know what to expect. Liverpool were way below their best against Chelsea last week, but Arne Slot could go strong here and they may feel they have a point to prove against their nearest rivals. Similarly, Arsenal could be flat after their disappointment in Paris, or they could come out firing. Hopefully that’s the case, and both teams will be up for it. Sutton’s prediction: 1-1 Footsie’s prediction: It will be close but Liverpool will win. 2-1 Strategy’s prediction: That’s not a bad shout, I might have to say the same there. 2-1 Source link #Premier #League #predictions #Chris #Sutton #grime #stars #Footsie #Strategy Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Be it cruising in supercars or mowing down the competition in 4x4s, it’s by now a perennial feature of their events. And now, the latest of these is set to go live as Shelby American’s classic performance cars enter the battleground. For once, it seems this manufacturer’s collaboration is not made to plug a new supercar, but instead to show off some of their most iconic vehicles from the past. The Shelby GT500 and Shelby 427 Cobra will both roar onto the roadways of the battleground to offer a new and stylish way to get about. While these may be a little off-putting to younger players, for anyone with an appreciation or soft spot for classic cars, the new additions to PUBG Mobile’s already beefy lineup of vehicles are sure to be welcome and will be available from now until July 6th. Fly high, free bird Of course, it wouldn’t be PUBG Mobile without just a smidgeon of ridiculousness to add to the proceedings. And you can customise your Shelby GT500 with rocket balloons and a flying saucer attachment, or maybe you’d rather go the classic route by upgrading the Cobra with a spoiler attachment and quad exhaust? Nvidia’s RTX 5060 will launch without reviews since chipmaker opts not to supply press drivers to reviewers Nvidia’s RTX 5060 will launch without reviews since chipmaker opts not to supply press drivers to reviewers Nvidia just confirmed that it’s withholding pre-release drivers from reviewers for the RTX 5060, which will rival the best graphics cards. According to Dutch publication Tweakers.net [machine translated], the company said that it will only make the drivers for the mainstream graphics card available on May 19, the card’s release date. Many reviewers already have the GPU in their labs and test benches, but they still haven’t received the pre-release drivers typically included in the review kit. Several publications that usually receive these pre-release drivers have taken to social media and their respective pages to say they still haven’t gotten the required software to run what would be Nvidia’s most affordable RTX 50-series (codenamed Blackwell) GPU. Team Green finally confirmed this to Tweakers.net, who said that it will only make the RTX 5060 drivers available on the day of release. This means that the tech media won’t be able to test the GPU until May 19 and publish their results after it goes on *****. (Image credit: harukaze5719 / X) Another complication is that the GPU will arrive exactly one day before Computex 2025. This will make it harder for publications with smaller teams to run tests upon the driver’s release, as most of their people will likely travel to Taiwan to attend the tech expo. Because of this, budget gamers who are keen on getting a new “affordable” GPU will have no way of gauging how the RTX 5060 will perform on the day of launch. If you’re one of those raring for a new graphics card, we recommend holding off until you see independent reviews for the mainstream card. After all, a new GPU release does not automatically mean that you’re getting a good, powerful card for the money you’re spending. For example, the RTX 5060 Ti 8 GB, which has a $379 MSRP, falls behind the $429 16 GB version, especially when attached to a PCIe 4.0 slot. Nvidia did not give a reason for the delay, but it could be that it’s still making some last-minute tweaks to the GPU driver. That way, it can ensure that the RTX 5060 will deliver some performance measure despite only having 8GB of VRAM. Or the company is avoiding getting its lowest-tier RTX 50-series GPU compared to the Intel Arc B580, which Tom’s Hardware has dubbed the $249 GPU champion, even before it starts selling. This means the info may not always match what’s in the article. Reporting mistakes helps us improve the experience.Generate Key Takeaways Indian and Pakistani forces have again engaged in exchanges of fire on their heavily guarded border. The Indian military on Friday accused Pakistan of launching “multiple attacks using drones and other munitions along entire Western Border.” The drones were “effectively repulsed,” the army wrote on X, saying it gave a “befitting reply” to the attacks. Islamabad has not commented on the latest incidents. Media reports in India said that at least one woman was killed and four other civilians were injured by artillery fire late on Thursday in the Indian-administered part of the disputed Kashmir region. This would bring the number of civilian deaths on the Indian side since Wednesday to 17. India said Pakistan carried out air strikes on Indian-administered Kashmir and in the state of Punjab on Thursday evening, causing no casualties. Pakistan rejected the accusations. The information could not initially be independently verified. The alarming escalation in tensions between the two nuclear powers was triggered by a terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir in April which killed 26 people, mainly Indian tourists. New Delhi accuses Islamabad of involvement in the attack. Pakistan denies involvement and has called for an independent investigation. Stay away from this travel booking giant after its latest earnings report, Piper Sandler warns Stay away from this travel booking giant after its latest earnings report, Piper Sandler warns Expedia shares could be in trouble, according to Piper Sandler. The bank downgraded shares of the travel company to underweight from neutral. Analyst Thomas Champion also lowered his price forecast of $135, down from $174, implies that shares of Expedia could decline 20% from Thursday’s close. The downgrade comes after Expedia reported mixed first-quarter results. While earnings exceeded expectations, revenue came in slightly below a FactSet estimate. On top of that, the company lowered its gross booking guidance for 2025. “The commentary around U.S. inbound travel & the B2C business was discouraging and suggests a tough slog from here. It could also get incrementally worse,” the analyst wrote. “Management comments on the topline leave us concerned. Expedia’s heavy U.S. concentration leads us to believe this name is vulnerable to further softening in travel demand.” EXPE YTD mountain EXPE YTD chart Champion added that inbound travel to the U.S. fell 7%, while travel from Canada plummeted 30%. “Expedia’s heavy US concentration leads us to believe this name is vulnerable to further softening in travel demand,” he added. “Comments suggest that full-year guidance extrapolates the trends in April through the balance of the year. We hope that’s the case, but the compares get steadily more challenging with 2024 B2C growth acceleration from -3% in 1Q24 to 1%, 4%, and 9% through the balance of the year.” Shares were down 10% on Friday morning following the company’s release.
