Italian Open: Emma Raducanu earns another clay-court win by beating Jil Teichmann in Rome
Italian Open: Emma Raducanu earns another clay-court win by beating Jil Teichmann in Rome
Emma Raducanu demonstrated her growing confidence on a clay court with a commanding Italian Open second-round win over Swiss lucky loser Jil Teichmann.
British number two Raducanu, who only knew she was facing Teichmann a few hours before the match, progressed with a clinical 6-2 6-2 win.
After earning her first win on outdoor clay in almost three years at the Madrid Open, she has now won back-to-back matches in Rome.
It is the first time Raducanu has reached the last 32 in the Italian capital – although tougher tests than 94th-ranked Teichmann await.
“I still don’t feel really comfortable [on clay],” the 22-year-old English player told Sky Sports.
“I guess in a way it helps I have to be super focused on every single point, get my feet right and try not to fall over.
“I think I’m slowly finding my feet.”
Raducanu was due to face 20th-ranked Ekaterina Alexandrova, but the Russian withdrew through injury on Friday morning.
Instead Raducanu found out in her warm-up she would be playing Teichmann, a left-hander who had lost in qualifying.
Teichmann, 27, has been as high as 21st in the world rankings and is adept on a surface which comes more naturally to her than Raducanu.
“She is a leftie and it’s a completely different challenge. I hadn’t played a leftie since February,” she said.
“I spent the first few games adjusting to the way the ball curls, but I’m so proud of how I fought through.”
Raducanu will play Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova, ranked 50th in the world, in the third round.

Toby Fox Is Releasing Deltarune Chapters 1-4 Slightly Earlier Than Expected
Toby Fox Is Releasing Deltarune Chapters 1-4 Slightly Earlier Than Expected
After years of waiting for news, we learned last month that Deltarune Chapters 1-4 would not only be coming out on June 5 but that it would be a Nintendo Switch 2 launch title. However, in a newsletter sent out last night, developer/composer Toby Fox explained that the game itself will launch a little earlier than the console, depending on where you live.
The Nintendo Switch 2 will be available for purchase in Japan starting at midnight on June 5, and since Deltarune will be a launch title, the game will also go live digitally at that time. However, Deltarune is not a console exclusive – it’s also launching on PS4, PS5, Switch, and PC – so tying its international release to the staggered launch of just one of its platforms doesn’t make sense. Instead, the game will go live worldwide at midnight JST.
Since Japan’s time zone is ahead of most of the world, Deltarune will launch on June 4 in most areas. In the US, that becomes 8 AM Pacific and 11 AM Eastern, while Europe can expect to play the game in the early evening, and Asia can expect it later that night. The exceptions to this are parts of Australia, New Zealand, and other territories east of Japan. Because their midnight will come even earlier than Japan’s, meaning the Switch 2 launch happens earliest there, they’ll get access to Deltarune a few hours before the rest of the world’s simultaneous release.
On the subject of Australia and New Zealand, Fox’s newsletter urges them not to spoil the game. “But, for convenience’s sake, we’re just going to ignore you guys and pretend that the game is not out…” the newsletter says. “Meanwhile, don’t say anything about it please.”
The newsletter also announced cross-generation purchasing, which applies if you buy the game on a Nintendo or PlayStation platform. For example, if you buy a PlayStation 4 version of the game, you also get a PlayStation 5 version, which is pretty standard on the platform. However, the same will go for Nintendo: if you buy the game on the Switch, you can get the Switch 2 version at no additional cost. Whether you’re unsure what time your Switch 2 will arrive on launch day or you didn’t get one yet, you can buy the Switch 1 version and have the upgrade ready when you get the new platform. A prior newsletter also confirmed that you can transfer save data between the two versions.
Deltarune is Toby Fox’s follow-up to Undertale, one of the most successful indie games of all time. If you’re interested in playing the first two chapters, they’re available on PlayStation, Switch, and PC for free. The complete game, which will include four chapters and free updates for any subsequent chapters, will be $24.99.

SpaceX Gets FAA Green Light for 25 Annual Starship Launches from Texas’ Starbase Facility
SpaceX Gets FAA Green Light for 25 Annual Starship Launches from Texas’ Starbase Facility
SpaceX has received approval from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to increase the launch rate of its Starship rocket to up to 25 launches a year from its Starbase facility in South Texas. On May 6, the FAA published a final environmental assessment that found that the expansion of Starship operations would not have a significant environmental impact on the area. The landings are approved for an equal number for each stage — the Super Heavy and upper-stage Starship vehicle — at the same facility, representative of a significant advancement in SpaceX’s ultimate goals for rapid rocket reusability and deep space travel.
FAA Clears Path for SpaceX to Scale Up Starship Launches Without Further Environmental Review
As per the FAA’s 53-page document titled Mitigated Finding of No Significant Impact and Record of Decision, the proposed expansion meets the environmental compliance standards set under the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The agency determined that a full environmental impact statement was unnecessary, confirming previous assessments outlined in a draft released last November. SpaceX’s operator licence has now been officially modified to support the ramped-up cadence of launches and landings without requiring further environmental review.
SpaceX has reached a regulatory milestone as it continues to test and refine its Starship system, the largest and most powerful rocket ever built. The vehicle is designed for rapid reusability and long-term missions to the Moon and Mars. In terms of sustainability and long-term estimation, Elon Musk’s time-and-frequency focus is a game changer for space travel.
Starship, a Super Heavy booster, will have two flights in 2025, one in January and one in March. Despite the mishaps, the upper-stage ship has returned to the tower, raining debris on the Turks and Caicos and the Bahamas. The ninth planned flight, under construction now, has fully tested its engines.
The FAA’s decision clears the way for SpaceX to continue to scale operations at Starbase, as one major regulatory obstacle has been removed. By observers’ estimates, expect to see an even more aggressive flight cadence from SpaceX, which will be testing for Mars systems and working toward less encumbered regulatory paths.

Threats versus potential benefits: Weighing up the enterprise risk of embracing AI
Threats versus potential benefits: Weighing up the enterprise risk of embracing AI
Throwing artificial intelligence (AI) tools at a wall and seeing what sticks will most probably deliver mixed results. Therefore, to realise the opportunities, it should pay to scope and minimise potential risks in advance.
After all, even well-resourced companies are still struggling to figure out their approach to AI, as Dael Williamson, EMEA chief technology officer at data analytics and AI software provider Databricks, confirms.
“For instance, copying and pasting from one proprietary thing to another, and then another, comes with an inherent ‘tax’ on data integrity. You need all the checks and balances. And all companies can experience this, because all companies have siloes,” Williamson observes.
If your data is problematic or just plain wrong, inferencing will suffer, and you probably won’t get the return on investment (ROI). Then there’s the risk of choosing the wrong language model for your needs.
“You have to train the models. But the inference is the meat and potatoes [of] what you’re actually going for,” Williamson notes. “AI can be incredibly useful. But it’s also tricky.”
Securing AI also presents risk, and not just from AI-enabled attacks, such as more sophisticated social engineering, prompt injections or slop-squatting.
Richard Cassidy, EMEA chief information security officer at cloud data management company Rubrik, says if you do not lean in on the “how” of AI goals, you can introduce security concerns of different kinds.
For instance, AI can become a “noise generator” that distracts users – including from real incidents – and increases waste and costs. In addition, carefully devised security controls might not carry across to the AI workflow.
On top of that, the relevant digital skills can be lacking, and workflows often are not yet sufficiently digitised, he says.
If the underlying processes are flawed, AI cannot fix that. It will just amplify chaos
Richard Cassidy, Rubrik
Risk assessment and prioritisation
“People don’t ask what AI adoption looks like in practice,” he says. “CISOs can build data lakes of epic proportions, with multifactor authentication, user attribution, secure access, and so on. Then AI comes along and maps a numerical representation into its workflow, embedding models, and then vector databases, getting the outputs through retrieval augmented generation (RAG) workflows and so on, and the security controls are lost.”
This matches Office of National Statistics (ONS) figures that suggest the most common barriers to AI adoption are difficulty identifying activities or business use cases (39%) and cost (21%). Some 16% of firms cited a lack of AI expertise and skills.
“If the underlying processes are flawed, AI cannot fix that. It will just amplify chaos,” says Cassidy.
“As always, start with the problem, not the hype, and don’t adopt AI just because you think you should. Ensure you pinpoint specific business challenges – customer service bottlenecks or slow cycles – and build from there.”
Reduce risk with clear usage policies and guardrails for single-workflow pilots – perhaps summarising reports, assisting queries, or automating invoice generation – then measure the impact.
Did it work? Did it reduce cost or increase value? Learn from that and build a roadmap from evidence, not enthusiasm, Cassidy advises.
Further mitigation strategies
Regardless, you likely do not want to jump into AI straight away, and you do not want to plug all your sensitive or regulated data into an off-the-shelf model to train it either, adds Tony Lock, distinguished analyst at IT market watcher Freeform Dynamics.
“Once you put data into the language model, you can’t take it out again. It’s just subsumed into the pattern,” says Lock. “That’s why RAG is around, so instead of feeding information into an LLM, you cleanse everything.”
And what if your model is pulled from the market? While open source, parallel developments and application programming interface (API) gateways can help protect organisations, Lock suggests we also cannot know exactly how risks will play out when it comes to, say, OpenAI losing an in-progress lawsuit about its rights to use others’ intellectual property.
Once you put data into the language model, you can’t take it out again. It’s just subsumed into the pattern. That’s why RAG is around, so instead of feeding information into an LLM, you cleanse everything
Tony Lock, Freeform Dynamics
“If you’re told by a judge that you need to take all that information out, that you’re not allowed to use it for training purposes, you’re likely going to have the entire language model start again with properly secured data that you’ve acquired,” says Lock.
Penalties could ensue. How will the AI suppliers then respond? Will they pass on related costs to customers? Will customers themselves be penalised? These are unanswered questions that might require specific legal advice.
Before you bet on using specific data in a particular model, it might be wise to remember that there are multiple AI-related lawsuits in the pipeline.
National regulations are complicating the environment. For example, the *** government currently favours some yet-to-be-devised sort of “opt out” of AI process for intellectual property (IP) owners.
Yet in the European Union, for instance, that will not work, because everything typically has to be “opt in”, notes Lock. And to opt in, users have to be told exactly how their IP is going to be used.
“Maybe the US courts will not enforce action. But then again, all those companies have European, ***, Japanese subsidiaries that could become liable, maybe even the local CEO,” he says.
At the same time, it can pay to wait. After all, there can be only one “first mover”; later entrants may benefit from a relative lack of obstacles that early adopters had to tackle.
The top recommendation
Databricks’ Williamson recommends enterprises get their data house in order first, even if that delays adoption. “Data processing and organising is hard, even for companies with money and a huge in-house team,” he says.
Usually, data is just not ready for AI. That means a need to inventory, audit and map all structured and unstructured data. A cleaner, deduplicated, standardised, accurate and relevant data foundation may require silo consolidation too, well before adding AI on top, he points out.
The good news is that fixing data “in the broader sense” will buy time for enterprises to consider their approach and generate benefits – including cost savings, storage efficiencies and the removal of legacy or shadow IT – for the whole business.
Rubrik’s Cassidy believes opportunities are typically about “smart delegation” of tasks and the democratisation of data-based intelligence across the business. “And AI offers SMEs a genuine levelling-up capability.”
Implementation plan and timelines
Robbie Jerrom, senior principal technologist for AI at Red Hat, says enterprises should focus on working out what they should do with AI, and take as much time as they need to do that.
“First, understand your need, then narrow the use case. Don’t try to boil the ocean,” says Jerrom.
One thing organisations can do is calculate the tokens required for a given AI enablement, although it is not always easy.
First, understand your need, then narrow the use case. Don’t try to boil the ocean
Robbie Jerrom, Red Hat
“Writing some small bits of Python code, maybe 10 minutes’ work, might use 45,000 tokens. Map it back to cost, and it’s maybe a couple of cents. But if you scale that up, and have 10 developers doing it all day long, how much is it? Every time an AI agent goes out and talks to something, for example, it uses tokens.”
Pick something small, get some experience running something trackable, and build something from which the business will learn.
Sandboxing can reduce risk, especially when considering more autonomous systems such as agents. Examine whether it can be trained in the company’s static policies, for example.
Perhaps ask a model to review a contract, compare it with previous contracts, and show the differences, confusions or irregularities. You might notice two irregularities, but the model might highlight something different to think about in addition. Changes over years, for instance, might signal a possible challenge in the customer relationship that had not been previously picked up.
AI can help discipline your thinking and apply method. Afterwards, double-check results and re-evaluate. Can you tune the model to better align with need, or try an alternative?
“Some of the boring use cases are where you’ll start to see value,” says Jerrom, noting that while generative AI (GenAI) makes mistakes, so do humans.
Education and training for workers are equally crucial. Most will need help learning how best to use their AI services.
“This can get you into a lot of hot water,” warns Jerrom. “AI is already everywhere.”
Next steps for enterprise AI adoption
Sue Daley, director of technology and innovation at TechUK, says all AI has “huge potential” for businesses. Regardless of shape, size or sector, it is key to understand exactly how AI can drive efficiencies and effectiveness. “What do you want it to do and what are you looking to achieve?”
As with any other technology, is AI the appropriate tool? Sometimes benefits might be agentic, while others might require a small language model or very specific approach.
“Small language models may be more appropriate for a specific business need or issue in their supply chain, logistics or operations. Context will be so important,” says Daley.
Play “mindfully” in a sandbox or safe environment to learn what AI can do. Examine compliance, security policies and practice, and ethics around responsible innovation. Consider upskilling needs. Acquire perspective from people and build cross-functional teams across the business.
“Start with education and awareness. Consider your organisation at all levels, from board level to middle management and individual workers,” says Daley. “Find ways to bring people on the journey with you. It’s a change management process, affecting a lot of people’s jobs.”
Even if enterprises think of GenAI tools as just another chatbot, many chatbots have not satisfied customers. Benefiting from AI requires serious thought, including on how the next version or product is evolving. Again, the top tip is that outputs can only be as good as your data inputs, she says.
Freeform Dynamics’ Lock adds: “Understand how to get AI working so your people say it actually helps them, rather than it being just something else to ‘get around’. When they’re picking AI up on their own, remember some might be doing advantageous things you hadn’t thought of – or something they shouldn’t. User effectiveness and happiness are crucial.”
Finally, don’t forget there are different classes of AI – some of which the business may already have experience with.

Google settles ****** employees’ racial bias lawsuit for $50 million
Google settles ****** employees’ racial bias lawsuit for $50 million
By Jonathan Stempel
(Reuters) – Google agreed to pay $50 million to settle a lawsuit accusing the search engine company of systemic racial bias against ****** employees.
A preliminary settlement covering more than 4,000 Google employees in California and New York was filed on Thursday evening in the Oakland, California federal court, and requires a judge’s approval.
Plaintiffs in the proposed class action said Google has a “racially biased corporate culture” where management steers ******* to lower-level jobs, pays them less, downgrades their performance ratings and denies them opportunities to advance.
According to the complaint, ****** employees comprised only 4.4% of Google’s workforce and 3% of its leadership in 2021.
The plaintiff April Curley, hired to expand outreach to historically ****** colleges, said Google denied her promotions, stereotyped her as an “angry” ****** woman, and fired her after six years as she prepared a report on its alleged racial bias.
Managers also allegedly denigrated ****** employees by declaring they were not “Googley” enough or lacked “Googleyness,” which the plaintiffs called racial dog whistles.
Google, a unit of Mountain View, California-based Alphabet, denied wrongdoing in agreeing to settle, and said it fully complied with all applicable laws. It had no immediate additional comment on Friday.
The lawsuit began in March 2022 after a regulator now known as the California Civil Rights Department started investigating Google’s treatment of ****** female employees.
Lawyers for the plaintiffs may seek up to $12.5 million of the settlement fund in fees. On Monday, the lawyers dismissed related claims brought on behalf of job applicants, citing evidence they had gathered and Google’s “reasoned arguments.”
The case is Curley et al v Google LLC, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. 22-01735.

Switch 2 GameChat — Everything We Know About The Console’s “Defining” Feature
Switch 2 GameChat — Everything We Know About The Console’s “Defining” Feature
One of the Switch 2’s new features is GameChat, a feature so important that Nintendo created a dedicated button, the C button, for it. There are quite a few things to know about GameChat for Switch 2, so we’re rounding up everything we’ve learned so far ahead of the Switch 2 launch on June 5.
What is GameChat?
GameChat is a new feature for the Switch 2 that allows groups of up to 12 people to chat while playing games. Nintendo is often criticized for being late to the game when it comes to online functionality, and many have pointed out that GameChat offers what Discord has for years. But GameChat is a built-in service for Switch 2 that Nintendo has been working on since 2020, and the company believes it is a “defining” feature of the Switch 2.
Nintendo’s developers said the company wanted to replicate the experience of a “student lounge,” that is, a place where people gather and mingle.
For GameChat on Switch 2, people can share their screens in real time, and they don’t have to be playing the same game. Nintendo said, “We wanted to create a space where people would naturally gather, whether it’s to play the same game together, or different games, or even just to watch.”
Nintendo said it foresees the possibility of players using GameChat to help them get through a particularly challenging puzzle or part of a game. If two people are playing the same game but separately, one person can ask a friend for help, and the other person can share their screen.
The C Button
Nintendo said it believed it would be “bothersome” to have to pause a game, return to the Home screen, and then launch a GameChat session. So the designers convinced the hardware team to create a dedicated button, the C button, to launch GameChat from. Nintendo’s designers said this was a “very last-minute request,” and it was made “just before” the Joy-**** controller molds were made. As you can see in the image below, the C button is located at the bottom of the right Joy-****.
Behold, the C button (effect added).
Camera And Microphone Support
GameChat for Switch 2 leverages the console’s built-in microphone, while users can also connect a USB-C camera for video chats. Nintendo is selling its own Switch 2 camera, while a third-party company is offering a Piranha Plant-themed camera. The built-in microphone contains noise-cancelling technology so only the desired sounds come through. Nintendo says someone in the same room could be making a smoothie in a blender and it wouldn’t negatively impact the audio quality of a GameChat chat.
GameChat is baked into Nintendo titles like Mario Kart World and Super Mario Party Jamboree, allowing players to see live footage of their friends and hear them speak in real time during gameplay. As you can see in the image below, GameChat allows users to have multiple feeds at the bottom of their main screen, showing what friends are up to. In some games, like Mario Kart World, your friend’s faces can be placed next to their characters, so you can see them during matches.
What GameChat looks like on Switch 2 with the camera and different games.
GameChat Won’t Be Free Forever
When the Switch 2 launches in June, everyone can use GameChat for free. However, GameChat will become a paid service included with Nintendo Switch Online beginning April 1, 2026. Some have speculated that Nintendo is going to raise the price of Nintendo Switch Online memberships, too, but that hasn’t happened yet.
Given that GameChat will be a paid Nintendo Switch Online feature in 2026, the C button will be useless for people who don’t have a paid membership. Rest assured, though, that pressing the C button without a membership will not lead to anything bad happening. Instead, pressing the button will take you to a page encouraging you to sign up for NSO.
Video Quality
During the April Nintendo Direct for Switch 2, Nintendo showed off GameChat and many people remarked that the video quality didn’t look all that great. The frame rate, in particular, was choppy to say the least. Nintendo explained that it intentionally made GameChat the smallest footprint possible to save system resources for the games themselves.
“In order to explain this well, I think it might first help to explain about the resources the system has,” Switch 2 hardware director Takuhiro Dohta said, via a translator. “So obviously, chat is meant to run and work simultaneously and coincide with the game you’re playing. But we also think it’s critical that it doesn’t get in the way of the game that’s running right now. And so we wanted to definitely make sure we do was to make sure that running game chat alongside the game doesn’t result in the game experience or quality being reduced at all in any way.
“So from a system resource perspective, obviously even the Nintendo Switch had a set of system resources that it needed to tap into to run the system. And now that we have Nintendo Switch 2, there is *******, more, basically resource budget to use. However, even with that enhanced and larger budget, we try to use as little of that as possible. And they made it happen somehow. And within that small slice of the resource budget, there’s other things to take into consideration, like network systems, all that kind of stuff, and all of that taking into account is where we landed in terms of quality of the video that you saw in the footage.”
Safety Concerns
Nintendo previously outlined the steps being taken to ensure safety when using GameChat, including audio and video chats. The company may collect and record video and audio chats, but only in the event that a report is filed; otherwise, the data is stored locally on the Switch 2 device. To begin with, players will not be able to use GameChat with everyone on their friend list by default.
“We assume some players will have somebody on their friend list who they’ve only played online with once, and yet somehow, they ended up accepting their friend request. Given that possibility, players might feel uncomfortable if suddenly everyone on their friend list can invite them to a video chat,” Switch 2 designer Sumikazu Ono said. “With that in mind, during the initial setup, you can choose the friends you want to be able to chat with from your friend list before you start using GameChat.”
If you join a room created by a friend, players will only see people you or your friend have approved from GameChat. Before joining a room, players will see if a friend of a friend is in the room–if they don’t want to join for any reason, they don’t have to.
With regard to protecting the safety of children, Ono said Nintendo had a “lot of internal discussion” on this topic–it was decided that children under 16 can only use GameChat with people on their friend list if their parent or guardian has given permission via the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app.
“In the case of voice chat, once a parent gives their child approval to chat with a particular person, their child will always be able to connect with the approved person from then on,” Ono said.
Nintendo takes an “even more cautious” approach for video chats. “When a child tries to start or join a video chat on their Switch 2, a request is sent to the parent’s app. The request must be approved before the video chat can begin. While children may feel a bit restricted, we decided to prioritize safety and require parents to approve the request every time,” Ono said.
The Nintendo Switch 2 camera has a “privacy shutter” that closes when not in use–as such, players should be able to see at a glance if the camera is on or off.
“We want everyone to feel comfortable using this feature, so we’ve placed a high priority on safety to avoid any unpleasant experiences. Of course, we want all players to follow the Community Guidelines, even when chatting with friends,” Ono said.
Preorder The Switch 2
The Nintendo Switch 2 launches on June 5, priced at $450 by itself or $500 for a bundle that includes the system and a copy of Mario Kart World. Preorders opened in April, and while the initial stock quickly sold through, there should be more waves of preorders in the time ahead. Be sure to consult GameSpot’s Switch 2 preorder guide to help give yourself the best chance at securing a unit for launch. While the Switch 2 remains sold out, you can grab a Switch 2 Camera now.

Alphadia III is Kemco’s newest JRPG, and it’s out now for mobile
Alphadia III is out now on Android and iOS
This prequel shows the journey of the Energi clone Alfonso
Take on deep tactical combat and mechanics new to the Alphadia series
If you’re a fan of JRPGs, you’re more than likely intimately familiar with publisher Kemco already. Publishing all manner of cult classics from Japan, they’ve been consistently putting out new and interesting releases. With their latest release, Alphadia III, coming just in time for the weekend.
If this title sounds familiar, then you’ve probably already had a chance to play through Alphadias I and II. Alphadia III doesn’t continue, but actually predates the Energi War saga experienced in the past two instalments and sees an Energi clone called Alfonso journeying to discover his freedom.
Alphadia III boasts the same deep turn-based combat of the original, with SP Skills that can turn the tide of battle and a variety of new mechanics such as Arrays and Energi Crocks. More than that, you’ll also have your own ship, which you can eventually upgrade into a seaplane!
Fly high
SP Skills are, of course, standard in many other releases such as Dragon Quest, but their addition promises to change up your tactical gameplay. Meanwhile, the Energi Crock lets you recycle magical items into Energi, and Arrays allow you to expand your strategic options in battle.
Alphadia III certainly builds on the mechanics of the original two entries, although some fans may lament it going back in time rather than forward. But it does offer a new perspective on the Energi War that has dominated the narrative. And with gorgeous pixel graphics to enjoy, you’ll have even more content to dig into.
Want to find out what else is in store for RPG fans on mobile? Well, you’ve got plenty of choices, but if you feel spoilt for them, why not get started by digging into our list of the top 25 best iOS and Android RPGs, featuring fun and casual exploration next to grim and gritty fantasy battles.

Something ‘striking’ is happening with apartment renters
Something ‘striking’ is happening with apartment renters
Renting has its benefits. It’s usually cheaper than buying a home, and it offers the freedom of moving without much hassle. That’s why about half of apartment renters in large urban markets usually move when their leases expire. But that is not happening now.
The low turnover is “striking,” according to real estate analyst Alex Goldfarb at Piper Sandler. He said some of the largest landlords are seeing turnover at just 30% compared with the industry norm of 50%.
He cited reasons including an unaffordable for-***** market, lack of rental supply on the coasts, nervousness about the economy and tariffs, the cost of moving and a shift to suburban apartments, which tend to be larger and more comfortable.
“The consequence is landlords are getting better pricing from renewals, as people don’t want to leave,” said Goldfarb. “It also improves [their] cash flow, because of lower turnover costs.”
Those costs would include repairs, painting and cleaning.
As a result, in the multifamily REIT sector, Goldfarb likes Essex Property Trust, with its large West Coast footprint. Equity Residential also benefits from that regional presence.
He noted the rebounds of San Francisco and Seattle, driven by artificial intelligence and tech companies like Amazon issuing return to office mandates, have helped real estate.
He’s neutral on the Sunbelt, which had been a hot pandemic play. Names like Camden Property Trust and Mid-America Apartment Communities had strong performances in the first quarter of this year, but could be hit hardest if there is a recession that leads to job losses.
As for the overall multifamily market, after declines last year due to record levels of new supply, rents are now coming back, up 0.9% year over year in the first quarter, according to CBRE. That is thanks to the strongest positive net absorption, or the change in the number of occupied units, since 2000 and more than triple the pre-pandemic first quarter average.
It marks the fourth consecutive quarter in which demand surpassed new construction completions, and that pushed the multifamily vacancy rate down to 4.8%, below its long term average of 5%.
“The first drop in vacant units in more than two years signals a crucial turning point in the multifamily sector,” said Kelli Carhart, leader of multifamily capital markets for CBRE. “This boost will lead to increased investment activity in 2025 as improving fundamentals continue to drive investor confidence capital deployment.”

Return To Silent Hill Movie Coming To Theaters As A “Faithful” Silent Hill 2 Adaptation
Return To Silent Hill Movie Coming To Theaters As A “Faithful” Silent Hill 2 Adaptation
Return to Silent Hill is officially heading to theaters. While the first two Silent Hill movies were released by Sony and Open Road Films, respectively, the third film was produced without the backing of a major studio. Now, Cineverse–the distributer behind last year’s horror hit Terrifier 3–has signed on to give Return to Silent Hill the big-screen treatment.
Cineverse confirmed the news (via Variety) while also promising that Return to Silent Hill will be “a faithful adaptation of the video game Silent Hill 2,” the 2001 survival-horror title which was successfully remade last year.
It was previously known that the film would adapt Silent Hill 2, but the early description for Return to Silent Hill lines up very closely with the game’s plot as a man named James Sunderland (Jeremy Irvine) is lured into the cursed town after receiving a letter from his dead wife, Mary (Hannah Emily Anderson). What James finds are more questions than answers, as well as an exploration of his own personal Hell.
Christophe Gans, the director of the first Silent Hill movie in 2006, returned to helm and co-write Return to Silent Hill. The second film, 2012’s Silent Hill: Revelation, was a direct sequel to the original movie and an adaptation of Silent Hill 3. However, Gans was not involved with that production.
“I am delighted to partner with Cineverse, which has shown a genuine understanding of fanship,” said Gans in a statement. “Return to Silent Hill is an adaptation created out of deep respect for a true masterpiece of a game, Konami’s iconic Silent Hill 2. I hope fans will enjoy and be fulfilled with the experience this new film has to offer.”
Return to Silent Hill’s release date hasn’t been announced yet, but filming has concluded. In the meantime, Konami is working on a new game in the franchise, Silent Hill f, which was previewed earlier this year.

Chronomon is a blend of Stardew Valley and Palworld, out now on mobile
Chronomon is a blend of Stardew Valley and Palworld, out now on mobile
Chronomon is a newly released blend of Stardew Valley and Palworld
Tame and battle your monsters, then take a break to farm
Enjoy tactical battles and laid-back casual farm sim fun depending on your mood
It’s certainly an oddity of gaming that, for all the hatred heaped upon RPG monsters, some of us can’t help but love the ugly little buggers. So much so that the monster farming genre is arguably its own niche, as is aptly demonstrated with the recently released Chronomon.
If the name is giving you any hints, then it shouldn’t surprise you that Chronomon is best surmised as a mixture of Palworld and Stardew Valley. Exploring a vast RPG-style open world, you’ll slowly collect new Chromomon, battling them against others and enjoying cultivating your own farm to boot.
Indeed, Chronomon is much less about actually farming the monsters you tame. Instead, it’s moreof a regular monster taming RPG where farming is a side gig that helps you out. For better or for worse, it certainly makes you appreciate what adventurers get up to in their downtime.
Chronomancy
Available at a premium price on iOS and Android, one of the more interesting features that Chronomon promises to introduce down the line is smartwatch compatibility. Which, if nothing else, makes for an excellent pun considering the name (chrono=time and all that).
Mechanically, Chronomon offers a wealth of mechanics to explore, meaning that neither farming nor monster taming is necessarily second fiddle. And with the main selling point being the ability to tailor your experience to jump into adrenaline-fuelled tactical battles or just relax to tend to your crops, there’s certainly a lot of appeal here, no matter what kind of player you are.
But if you’re looking to have a bit more choice in the RPG genre, there’s a whole swathe of releases to choose from. And you can get started just by digging into our list of the top 25 best RPGs for iOS and Android that collates all of our top picks!

Digital Resurrection of Titanic Reveals How the Ship Was Torn Apart in Its Final Hours
Digital Resurrection of Titanic Reveals How the Ship Was Torn Apart in Its Final Hours
A detailed digital model of the sinking of the Titanic shows that the “unsinkable” ship was almost certainly destroyed after it struck an iceberg 113 years ago. Based on more than 715,000 underwater images, as well as a full-size three-dimensional movie model made for a new film, Titanic: the Digital Resurrection. The computer simulation in new research reveals insights into one of the deadliest maritime tragedies in history.
Titanic’s Digital Twin Reveals Violent Breakup and Heroic Crew Actions in Historic Detail
As per the statement from National Geographic, the documentary leverages advanced underwater scanning technology used by deep-sea mapping firm Magellan. Working alongside Atlantic Productions, the team spent three weeks capturing sonar data to produce the most precise digital model of the Titanic to date, accurate down to the rivet. The wreck is still sitting 12,467 feet below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean, where it settled after striking an iceberg four days into its inaugural journey from Southampton to New York.
With the digital reconstruction, researchers have been able to analyse the ship’s hull in new ways, revealing that it burst under pressure, rather than breaking cleanly in half. The team also found a steam valve in the hull that had been left open, which supports eyewitness reports that the engineers had continued to work to the end to keep power flowing and distress signals broadcasting. These selfless acts likely saved many lives, the documentary suggests.
Personal items such as pocket watches and purses were digitally catalogued and linked to their owners, lending a deeply human touch to the cold wreckage. A shark tooth charm was among the more unique finds. They found no trace of the fictional “Heart of the Ocean” necklace from James Cameron’s 1997 film, contrary to popular culture myths.
On April 11, 2022—the 113th anniversary of the ship’s fateful voyage—the documentary Titanic: The Digital Resurrection changed the narrative of one of mankind’s most notorious maritime disasters by combining wrenching memories with modern technology.

Monolithic Power Crushes Earnings—Should You Buy the Dip After NVIDIA Fallout?
Monolithic Power Crushes Earnings—Should You Buy the Dip After NVIDIA Fallout?
For the technology sector, 2025 has been a year characterized by losses, but Monolithic Power Systems Inc (NASDAQ:) has flipped the script.
As of the May 7 close, the The Technology Select Sector SPDR® Fund (NYSE:) has provided a total return of approximately -8% on the year. Meanwhile, Monolithic has a total return of approximately +8%.
This is largely because when it has come time to show how well the business has actually been performing, Monolithic has risen to the occasion.
Monolithic’s shares rose 9% after its February earnings release and almost 6% after its latest earnings release on May 1.
However, the stock still trades around 34% below its 52-week high. This begs the question: Is this just the beginning of Monolithic Power Systems’ stock recovery?
Monolithic Gets Three Gold Stars on Earnings Release
Monolithic primarily makes power chips, which regulate the use of energy within different technological systems. Companies use its chips in almost every broad end market, including powering AI server racks, cars, and industrial electronics.
Looking at three key metrics from the company’s latest earnings—revenue, adjusted earnings per share (EPS), and guidance, Monolithic impressed on all fronts. The company saw total revenues rise by 39% to nearly $638 million. This growth rate was about 1% higher than analysts forecasted. Its adjusted EPS rose by almost 44% to $4.04, also about 1% faster than anticipated. However, likely the biggest surprise came in the company’s Q2 revenue guidance, where it forecasted growth of 28% at the midpoint, exceeding expectations by almost 3%.
NVIDIA Nightmare Comes True, But Diversification Is Paying Off Big-Time
Monolithic is still dealing with the fallout of its relationship with NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:). In late 2024, a report revealed that the company would lose a lot of market share in powering NVIDIA’s new Blackwell server racks. This report caused Monolithic shares to drop around 40% in just two weeks. That report seems to have proven accurate. Revenue from the company’s Enterprise Data segment dropped 11% from the prior year and 31% from Q4 2024.
However, the beautiful thing about Monolithic Power Systems is its vast diversification across its end markets. The company’s Enterprise Data segment makes up just 33% of total revenue, and all of its other end markets make up at least 6% of total revenue. This is important, considering that every end market besides Enterprise Data grew by more than 40% from the previous year. These five end markets also all grew from Q4 2024, with the exception of Consumer, which declined by less than 1%. All this is to say that it is evident that Monolithic can still grow briskly, even if its relationship with NVIDIA took a big hit. Additionally, the company noted that it is still earning design wins in the enterprise data end market and expects revenue to ramp up in the year’s second half. Overall, the company has indicated that Enterprise Data revenue could be “flat plus or minus 20%” in 2025.
The earnings call also revealed some good news: the company expects no major effects from tariffs. They do not see effects on their costs or customer demand. This is important because around 37% of their revenue comes from China. The company emphasized its “China for China” supply chain. This means that manufacturers make chips for ******** customers in China, while they produce chips for non-******** customers outside China. This local manufacturing focus helps avoid the effects of tariffs.
Analysts Eye 14% Upside, But Long-Term Opportunity May Provide Much More
We tracked mixed updates on Wall Street price targets after earnings. Some upped their targets, some lowered them, and some reiterated. However, these analyst price targets still indicate a solid 12-month upside for Monolithic.
On average, their price targets indicate an upside of 14% compared to the stock’s May 7 closing price.
Still, whether Monolithic stock will continue rising in 2025 is hard to say, given the extensive cyclicality of the semiconductor industry. However, its value as a long-term investment case remains strong.
As the world continues to become more technologically advanced, there is a need for Monolithic to produce increasingly advanced chips to power those technologies.
The company’s broad diversification by end market means its success is not dependent on the success of one industry, let alone one customer. Additionally, the company’s smartly-placed supply chain puts it in a good position regarding tariffs.

FedEx board member David Steiner selected as next USPS postmaster general
FedEx board member David Steiner selected as next USPS postmaster general
David Steiner, a former CEO of the nation’s largest waste management company who currently serves on the FedEx board of directors, is poised to take over control of the U.S. Postal Service, becoming the nation’s 76th postmaster general.
The announcement of Steiner’s appointment, which drew immediate concerns from postal unions over possible efforts to privatize the USPS, was made Friday by Amber McReynolds, chairperson of the USPS’ Board of Governors, during a meeting of the independent group that oversees the service.
“We anticipate that Mr. Steiner will join the organization in July, assuming his successful completion of the ethics and security clearance processes that are currently underway,” McReynolds said.
Friday’s announcement by the the Board of Governors comes as President Trump and his adviser Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency have raised the idea of privatizing the nearly 250-year-old Postal Service, which has faced financial challenges amid a changing mail mix and other issues.
The choice of Steiner has been seen by the postal unions as a harbinger for possible privatization of some or all of the venerable quasi-public institution, which is largely self-funded and has a mission to serve every address in the country — nearly 167 million residences, businesses and post office boxes.
Postal unions have held protests throughout the country over potential privatization, job cuts and possibly ending the universal service obligation.
Brian L. Renfroe, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, said Steiner is not just any executive from the private sector but someone who sits on the board of one of the Postal Service’s top competitors.
“His selection isn’t just a conflict of interest — it’s an aggressive step toward handing America’s mail system over to corporate interests,” Renfroe said in a statement. “Private shippers have been waiting to get USPS out of parcel delivery for years. Steiner’s selection is an open invitation to do just that.”
Renfroe’s union represents 205,000 active city letter carriers and around 90,000 retirees.
Mark Dimondstein, president of the American Postal Workers Union, which represents more than 220,000 USPS employees and retirees, likened the appointment of Steiner to a fox guarding a hen house.
“FedEx has a very different agenda than the public postal service. And they’re a major competitor of the United States Postal Service,” he said. “I’m not talking about any attributes of an individual, but to me, that’s the last type of person you will put in charge of the public institution as the anchor of the mailing package industry in the country.”
Steiner, who will leave the FedEx board, said in a written statement that he admires the public service mission of the USPS and called it “an incredible honor to be asked to lead the world’s greatest postal organization.”
“I believe strongly in maintaining its role as an independent establishment of the executive branch,” said Steiner, who served as CEO of Waste Management Inc. from 2004 through October 2016.
In a written statement, McReynolds called Steiner “the right person to lead the Postal Service at this time to ensure this magnificent and historic organization thrives into the future.”
“Dave is a highly regarded leader and executive with tremendous vision, experience and skill that can be applied to the long-term mission and business needs of the Postal Service,” she added. “Our Board looks forward to working with Dave as he takes on the core mandates of providing universal and excellent service for the American public and doing so in a financially sustainable manner.”
The Postal Service is in the midst of a 10-year modernization and cost-cutting plan that began in 2021 under Postmaster Louis DeJoy, who resigned in March. The plan is an attempt to stop losses at the agency, which has a budget of about $78 billion a year and is mostly self-funded, including through stamps and packages.
Known as “Deliver for America,” the initiative has received markedly mixed reviews. While postal officials contend it has led to major efficiency improvements, some members of Congress have criticized it for leading to mail delays, unsustainable postage increases and declines in business.
Besides privatization, there’s also been talk of possibly moving the USPS under the control of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
The choice of Steiner was first reported by The Washington Post.

Cuttlefish May Communicate Using Tentacle Waves, Study Finds
Cuttlefish May Communicate Using Tentacle Waves, Study Finds
Cuttlefish is known for displaying quite a few number of methods to communicate. The list containing the methods like changing colours and body patterns, releasing ink for courtship displays, males using tentacle motions to show aggression towards other males makes their communication system complex. A new research by Sophie Cohen-Bodénès and Peter Neri, neuroscientists at École Normale Supérieure, in France suggests the possibility of cuttlefish using their tentacles to wave and signal at each other in order to make interaction.
Studying the waving patterns
According to the study, posted on the bioRxiv preprint server, the researchers studied the common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) and the dwarf cuttlefish (Sepia bandensis), observing four consistent arm wave gestures: “up,” “side,” “roll,” and “crown.” When videos of these gestures were shown, cuttlefish often responded by mimicking them—especially when the footage was upright—indicating directional recognition. Additionally, the movements produced vibrational waves in the water. Using a hydrophone, the team recorded these vibrations and found that cuttlefish responded only to original, unaltered versions. This suggests that the sequence of vibrations carries meaning, potentially serving as an alternate communication method when visual cues are blocked.
Interpretations
While the study’s findings are promising, further research is yet to be done to define these arm movements as true communication. Given to Cuttlefish’s social nature, the movement are likely to be communication, but more data is needed to correlate specific signals to the responses. Researchers are thinking of applying machine learning approaches to decipher wave meanings and is developing a robotic cuttlefish to replicate gestures and vibrations, aiming to better understand this potential underwater language.

ONS head Sir Ian Diamond steps down for health reasons after data controversy
ONS head Sir Ian Diamond steps down for health reasons after data controversy
The head of the *** Office for National Statistics (ONS), Sir Ian Diamond, has resigned with immediate effect due to health reasons, at a time when the ONS faces a crisis of confidence in its work.
“Due to ongoing health issues, Sir Ian has decided he is unable to give the full commitment he would like to drive the organisation forward,” the ONS said.
Last month, a report from the Office for Statistics Regulation (OSR) laid out its concerns about the quality of the ONS’s data.
These concerns focused on, but were not limited to, the widely recognised problems with the Labour Force Survey which is used to measure the unemployment rate in the ***.
Dr Sarah Cumbers, chief executive of the Royal Statistical Society, said: “Sir Ian Diamond showed outstanding leadership of the ONS and the wider statistical system during the pandemic, helping to make the *** a world leader in delivering timely data in a rapidly changing environment.”
Dr Cumbers also acknowledged the OSR report.
“Given the recent scrutiny of the system, we look forward to engaging with the Cabinet Office and the *** Statistics Authority to consider how the National Statistician role should evolve, and to working with Sir Ian’s successor to address the ongoing challenges,” she said.
The report looked at concerns around business surveys and found that ONS staff were not always being listened to when flagging emerging problems to senior managers.
A lack of confidence in the quality of data makes it more difficult for the government and companies to make fully informed decisions.
Since the pandemic, statistics agencies around the world have struggled to get the response rates that they would like to ensure their data is of the quality they would like.
The regulator said it would like more assurance that the ONS has sufficient steps in place to regularly review and improve sample design and representativeness, bias, survey methodology, and imputation.

Hideki Kamiya says he’d ‘love’ to remake ****** May Cry, now he’s working with Capcom again
Hideki Kamiya says he’d ‘love’ to remake ****** May Cry, now he’s working with Capcom again
Former PlatinumGames designer Hideki Kamiya says he’d like to work on his classic Capcom action games ****** May Cry and Viewtiful Joe again.
Kamiya was recently reunited with his former employer via his new studio Clovers, which is creating a sequel to another of his classic titles, Okami.
Speaking via his YouTube channel, Kamiya was asked if he’d like to use the opportunity to revisit some of his other Capcom games, namely the first ****** May Cry, which he directed.
“As for a ****** May Cry remake, of course I’d love to do that,” he said. “I usually don’t replay my own games after release, and ****** May Cry is no exception. But once in a while, I catch gameplay clips and think, ‘yeah, this really does feel like a 24-year-old game design.’
“With today’s technology and game design approach, of course, I’d want to remake it from the ground up. If that ever happens… well, I don’t think seriously unless it’s really happening, so right now, I don’t have anything in mind. But if the time comes, I’ll come up with something. That’s what I do!”
He added: “So Capcom, leave it to me! Also, let me handle Viewtiful Joe too!”
Kamiya recently said that the fact his new studio is working on an Okami sequel doesn’t mean it’ll focus solely on existing IP in the future.
Speaking to Japanese publication GameSpark, Kamiya was asked how he felt about the studio’s relationship with existing IP. Kamiya stressed that the most important thing wasn’t whether the game was based on an existing series, but whether it’s interesting.
“If we were asked to make a game that uses an existing IP, and if it looked like it would be interesting to ‘Cloverize’ it in our own way, then we would do it,” he said.
“But of course, if we get a project proposal that we really want to work on, and the desire to go it grows, then we’ll do an original work too. So I think it’s appropriate to say we won’t close off any possibilities – in the end, it all comes down to whether or not we get a ‘wow’ feeling from it.”

New FEMA head says he will ‘run right over’ staff who resist changes
New FEMA head says he will ‘run right over’ staff who resist changes
FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) Headquarters is seen in Washington, DC, February 11, 2025.

David Richardson, the new head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, told staff on Friday he will “run right over” anyone that resists changes and that all delegation of authority in the agency is immediately suspended.
Richardson spoke one day after he was appointed to replace acting FEMA chief Cameron Hamilton, who was ousted by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem after telling a congressional hearing he did not support eliminating the agency.
President Donald Trump and Noem have called for the agency to be shrunk or even abolished, arguing that many of its functions can be carried out by the states, a stance that is already leading to decreased federal aid for disasters.
Richardson, a former Marine artillery officer and combat veteran, told staff in an all-hands call that was heavy on references to his military experience, that all decisions, including those on spending, would go through him.
“I, and I alone in FEMA, speak for FEMA. I’m here to carry out the president’s intent for FEMA,” Richardson, who was most recently assistant secretary for DHS’ office for countering weapons of mass destruction, told the staff.
Standing behind a lectern and speaking in a forceful tone, Richardson said in his experience carrying out reforms that roughly 20% of an organization will resist.
“Obfuscation, delay, undermining. If you’re one of those 20% of people and you think those tactics and techniques are going to help you, they will not, because I will run right over you,” Richardson said. “Don’t get in my way … I know all the tricks.”
The leadership change comes at a time when the agency, which is in charge of coordinating the federal government’s response to disasters, is helping states and local communities prepare for the onset of hurricane season on June 1.
Under Hamilton, FEMA had already moved to slash costs and narrow the agency’s mission. In April, Hamilton sent the White House a memo with suggestions for reducing FEMA’s role in responding to disasters. It included an option raising the threshold for providing aid to disaster-hit states.
In his first 100 days, Trump has turned down a series of requests for major disaster aid that the impacted states, both Republican- and Democratic-leaning alike, have said would have been approved under past administrations.
Richardson said he would be looking to narrow the agency’s operations to only actions that “are within the law” and “within our mission.” He said using resources beyond those parameters was a waste of taxpayer dollars.
“We’re going to find out how to do things better. We’re going to find out how to push things down to the states that should be done at state level. Also we’re going to find out how we can do more cost sharing with the states,” he said.
Richardson addressed a workforce that has been dwindling in size, targeted for cuts like other agencies by Trump and Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency.
Some 2,000 FEMA employees have accepted incentives to leave or were terminated since the start of the Trump administration, shrinking its full-time staff by about one third, according to Michael Coen, former FEMA chief of staff under the administrations of former Presidents Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
Coen predicted Richardson’s address would further demoralize the staff.
“I think it’s going to lead to more departures from the agency, which is just going to further decrease FEMA’s capability for whenever the next catastrophic event happens.”

What’s the way out of the India and Pakistan crisis?
What’s the way out of the India and Pakistan crisis?

Anti-India protests took place in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad, on Friday
As the continuing India-Pakistan crisis takes a dangerous turn, nations around the world are urging calm.
The initial thinking was that after India launched air strikes, and with Pakistan claiming to have shot down several Indian jets – a claim Delhi has not confirmed – both sides could claim “victory” and de-escalate.
But there’s a danger that any protracted ****-for-tat attacks could lead them to a far more damaging prospect.
During past conflicts, such as in 2019 and 2016, it was the United States and a few other global powers that put pressure on Delhi and Islamabad to bring the situation under control and de-escalate.
Now passions are running high and the nationalist rhetoric has reached a crescendo on both sides. The neighbours are closer to war than in recent decades.
“The World community is keeping quiet; that’s dangerous,” Ayesha Siddiqa, a Pakistani academic who is a senior fellow at King’s College London.
“Though the flare up has been happening for decades, this is the first time the two countries find themselves in a conflict without anyone monitoring them or forcefully telling them to stop,” she said.
Unless Washington gets more involved, Islamabad and Delhi may continue with their accusations and counter-accusations.
Although US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been telling the senior leaders of India and Pakistan to de-escalate, the message from other American leaders is different.
US Vice-President JD Vance has said that a potential war between India and Pakistan would be “none of our business” during an interview with Fox News.
“We want this thing to de-escalate as quickly as possible. We can’t control these countries, though,” Vance said.
Vance was on a visit to India when the militant attack in Indian-administered Kashmir, which killed 26 civilians, took place.
US President Donald Trump had earlier called rising tension between India and Pakistan a “shame”.
AFP via Getty Images
Local residents stand beside the wreckage of their home that was damaged amid Pakistani artillery shelling
During previous India-Pakistan skirmishes, for example in 2019, tension was defused quickly after India carried out what it called “surgical strikes” on what it called terrorist camps inside Pakistan.
One Indian military jet was shot down in the aftermath of the crisis and the pilot was captured by Pakistan. He was released two days later after reported intervention from Washington and other world powers.
But the intensity of the current conflict is different and passions are running high on both sides.
While the Trump administration’s priorities are more about tariffs, China and Ukraine-Russia, it may require a concerted attempt by the international community to lower tension between the two nuclear-armed rivals.
The other world power which has a stake in South Asia is China. Beijing has close economic and military ties with Islamabad. It has invested more than $50bn (£37.5bn) in Pakistan as parts of its China-Pakistan Economic Corridor to boost trade.
China also has unresolved border issues with India and the two countries recently had a border clash in the Himalayan region 2020. Despite the tension, China is the second largest trading partner of India.
“If the US is uninterested [in resolving India-Pakistan tension] then other permanent members of the UN Security Council – P5 – should get involved. It is their responsibility as well,” Shen Dingli, a Shanghai-based international affairs expert tells the BBC.
As India accuses Pakistan of supporting the Kashmiri separatist rebels, who carried out the deadly attack on tourists last month, the ******** academic says “the P-5 members can launch a credible investigation into the incident”, to address India’s concerns.
Watch: Aftermath of strikes in Pakistan-administered Kashmir
Gulf states like Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, which have close ties to both the countries, could step up their mediation efforts.
Saudi Arabian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel Al-Jubeir arrived in Delhi on 7 May in what was seen as a surprise visit amid the backdrop of a spike in tensions between India and Pakistan.
“A good meeting with Adel Al-Jubeir,” Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said, adding that his counterpart “shared India’s perspective on firmly countering terrorism”.
The Saudi minister is scheduled to visit Islamabad on Friday for talks with Pakistan’s leaders.
There are an estimated 2.6 million Pakistanis living and working in the Gulf Kingdom. Riyadh has considerable influence in Pakistan.
Saudi Arabia has loaned billions of dollars to Pakistan to bail out the country during economic crises over the years.
One way out of the current crisis could be a situation where both sides can claim victory to satisfy their audience.
Delhi says the missile strikes on suspected militant hideouts inside Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir were part of a commitment to hold “accountable” those responsible for the last month’s attack in Pahalgam.
“India has already said it has achieved its objectives. Now, the ball is in Pakistan’s court. If they wish to retaliate then that would elicit a strong response from India,” retired Indian Lt Gen D S Hooda said.
For Pakistan, especially for its powerful military, it would want to show its people that it can stand up against India and teach it a lesson once again by downing five of the Indian air force jets during a dog fight.
India has not acknowledged the loss of any of its fighter jets in the current skirmish.
But according to Pakistani academic Siddiqa, how the current crisis ends depends on what India’s stated objectives are.
“India’s goal posts keep changing day by day – from punishing Pakistan to attaining something more,” she said.
