Australia U20s win but miss out on Rugby Championship Australia U20s win but miss out on Rugby Championship Australia’s under 20s have fallen agonisingly just shy of winning their first ever Rugby Championship title despite finishing the junior tournament on a high with their thrilling 40-36 win over Argentina in South Africa. Despite the junior Wallabies having been undefeated through the tournament with two wins and a draw, New Zealand lifted the title, relegating them to second place, after the Kiwis beat hosts South Africa in the final game at the same Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha later on Sunday. The Australians had earlier prevailed against Los Pumitas with six tries in total despite a fluctuating second half when the lead changed four times. “Super proud of the boys,” captain Eamon Doyle said afterwards. “Coming in after last year finishing bottom of the table, with a draw and two wins, couldn’t be happier or prouder.” Chris Whitaker’s side scored after only three minutes as halfback James Martens reached out to score on the back of a rolling maul, and they increased the lead to 12-0 when winger Xavier Rubens went over in the left corner. Argentine winger Aquiles Vieyra crashed over for their first score but after home flanker Pampa Storey got a yellow card for a dangerous tackle, No.8 Toby Brial scored to push the *********** lead out to 19-5. Australia then conceded a penalty try and a yellow card to flyhalf Joe Dillon while attempting to stop a rolling maul and the Argentines were soon level as back-rower Agustin Garcia Campos dived over. Soon after halftime, winger Shane Wilcox’s try was answered by Vieyra’s second but hooker Lipina Ata’s pick-and-go put them back in front with 15 minutes left to play. Victory was effectively sealed six minutes from time when the Aussies’ sustained attack was eventually rewarded by a penalty try when their rolling maul was pulled down illegally. Argentina grabbed a consolation try after the siren before the young Australians had to sit and watch in frustration as New Zealand overcame South Africa 48-45 to successfully defend their TRC U20 title. But the Australians have laid down their marker before the Under 20 world championship in Italy in June and July. U.S. President Donald Trump recently repeated a pledge to help get food to Palestinians in Gaza. A U.S.-backed mechanism for getting aid into Gaza should take effect soon, Washington’s envoy to Israel also said on Friday. A State Department spokesperson said: “We cannot speak to ongoing negotiations, but I will note recent statements by Qatar and Egypt that they are continuing to engage in pursuit of an agreement.” The spokesperson said that ****** bore sole responsibility for the war as well as for the resumption of hostilities. “President Trump has made clear the consequences ****** will face if it continues to hold the hostages, including American ***** Alexander and the bodies of four Americans,” the spokesperson added. The U.S. had previously held discussions with the ************ militant group on securing the release of U.S. hostages held in Gaza. Israeli media reported on Sunday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had told a closed session of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that ****** could soon release Alexander, an American-Israeli hostage, as a goodwill gesture towards Trump, who will visit this Middle East this week. The prime minister’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the reports. Investor reaction to U.S.-China progress in trade talks Investor reaction to U.S.-China progress in trade talks NEW YORK (Reuters) -U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said on Sunday they reached a deal with China to cut the U.S. trade deficit, describing “substantial progress” in high-stakes talks with ******** officials but offering no details as two days of negotiations concluded in Geneva. ERIC KUBY, CHIEF INVESTMENT OFFICER, NORTH STAR INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT CORP., CHICAGO: “This is a step in the right direction, showing that both sides are interested in coming to a constructive conclusion and develop a better trade relationship. The details are quite sketchy, but I think the direction sounds to be more cooperative rather than combative, and I think that we have to view that as a positive. “There were a variety of possible outcomes of this weekend’s meetings, ranging from both sides walking out and pointing the finger at the other side to announcing that the extra tariffs have been taken off the table. What we got here was something more in the middle, but more towards the positive side. So I think this is a step in the right direction. It is not likely to trigger a dramatic market rally, but it’s certainly also not going to create any selling pressure.” GENNADIY GOLDBERG, HEAD OF US RATES STRATEGY, TD SECURITIES, NEW YORK: “Markets may be encouraged by some agreement on a deal, but it will remain contingent on further details being released. Recent price action suggests some optimism around a trade deal. If that turns out to be the case, pricing will have been justified. The risk is if the deal is less substantial than expected. Then the market might come away disappointed.” JAMIE COX MANAGING PARTNER, HARRIS FINANCIAL GROUP, RICHMOND VIRGINIA: “The administration downplayed the talks heading into the weekend, so the substantial progress language will send markets zooming on a Monday. The one caveat to consider, however, is that the President could throw cold water on the talks if he thinks China is getting off easy.” DAVID WAGNER, HEAD OF EQUITIES AT APTUS CAPITAL ADVISORS LLC IN FAIRHOPE, ALABAMA: “There’s been a lot of optimism starting to be priced into the market already, but positive sentiment around the issue should continue to fuel a market recovery.” (By Reuters Staff) Source link #Investor #reaction #U.S.China #progress #trade #talks Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content] For verified travel tips and real support, visit: [Hidden Content]

Is a Big Oil Megamerger Brewing? Exxon, Chevron, and Others Are Eyeing This Oil Stock. Is a Big Oil Megamerger Brewing? Exxon, Chevron, and Others Are Eyeing This Oil Stock. BP’s underperformance and strategy shifts have made it a potential takeover target. Shell, Chevron, Exxon, TotalEnergies, and others have looked into acquiring the oil company. A takeover of BP might be difficult. 10 stocks we like better than BP › A consolidation wave has washed over the oil patch in recent years. ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) kicked things off with its $64.5 billion deal for Pioneer Natural Resources in late 2023. Chevron (NYSE: CVX) followed with a megadeal of its own, agreeing to buy Hess for $60 billion in a deal it hopes to close this summer. Several other oil companies have joined the merger wave by making smaller deals. After a calm in recent months, a potentially massive deal could be brewing. Several oil companies have run the numbers on buying BP (NYSE: BP). Here’s why it has become a takeover target and what big oil companies might buy the oil stock. Image source: Getty Images. BP has struggled in recent years. The British oil giant has undergone two significant strategy shifts. In 2020, the company pledged to cut capital spending on oil and gas projects, which would steadily reduce its production by 40%. It aimed to shift that spending toward rapidly growing its clean energy businesses. However, a recovery in oil prices and years of underperformance led the oil giant to shift gears on its strategy again earlier this year. It’s slashing spending on renewables from a plan to invest $5 billion annually to a $1.5 billion to $2 billion yearly level. Meanwhile, it’s boosting its oil and gas capital investment plan to $10 billion per year. As a result, BP will grow its renewable business much more slowly while increasing its overall oil and gas output to an average of 2.5 million barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) per day by 2030, up from less than 2.4 million BOE last year. BP’s abrupt strategy shifts have it searching for an identity. It stands in stark contrast to U.S. oil giants Exxon and Chevron, which have well-defined multiyear strategies for growing shareholder value. For example, Exxon plans to invest $140 billion in developing its advantaged assets (lower cost and higher margin) while stripping out billions of structural costs. This plan has the oil giant on track to add an incremental $20 billion in earnings and $30 billion in free cash flow by 2030. Meanwhile, Chevron is also investing heavily in growing its advantaged assets, which will drive industry-leading free-cash-flow growth of as much as $10 billion by 2026. Both oil companies are also investing strategically to grow their lower-carbon energy platforms, focusing on investments that can earn attractive returns, like carbon capture and storage, biofuels, and hydrogen. Story Continues BP’s underperformance due to strategic missteps is making it a takeover target. The initial speculation centered around fellow British oil company Shell (NYSE: SHEL) as a potential interested party. Shell initially downplayed its interest in a tie-up with BP. CEO Wael Sawan told the Financial Times that his company would prefer repurchasing its stock over buying BP. He also stated on the company’s first-quarter earnings call that “We have to have our own house in order” and have “more work to do” before it would be in a position to launch an acquisition of the size and scale of BP. However, Shell has reportedly looked into acquiring BP. It’s not the only one. Exxon, Chevron, TotalEnergies, and Abu Dhabi’s Adnoc Gas have all reportedly run the numbers on acquiring BP. In addition, oil trader Vitol has considered buying parts of BP. While there’s a lot of potential interest in buying BP, such a deal would be difficult. For starters, BP has a lot of debt ($77 billion), due partly to paying for the Deepwater Horizon disaster. As such, buying BP could negatively impact the acquiring company’s balance sheet. That might not be something Exxon and Chevron want to do, as they prefer to maintain their fortress balance sheets because it gives them more flexibility to weather industry downturns. Regulatory scrutiny is another potential roadblock to a deal. Regulators in the U.K. might want to keep BP out of foreign control. There’s growing speculation that a big oil rival might buy BP. However, while several companies have run the numbers, getting a deal closed won’t be easy, even if the numbers work. Add the uncertainty of that catalyst to the company’s shifting strategy, and it’s an unappealing investment compared to Exxon and Chevron, which have well-defined strategies for growing shareholder value. Qatar to donate a jumbo jet for Trump’s exclusive use as a presidential plane, sources say Qatar to donate a jumbo jet for Trump’s exclusive use as a presidential plane, sources say Washington — The royal family of Qatar is donating a jumbo jet for President Trump’s exclusive use as a presidential plane, sources told CBS News. ABC News first reported the gift, which comes as Mr. Trump heads to Qatar as part of his first international trip of his second term. But the plane, a 747-8, won’t be ready to serve as Air Force One quite yet, and Mr. Trump won’t be using it to fly back to the U.S. from the Middle East. The plane needs to be checked for security and spying devices before it is accepted, one of the sources told CBS News. The plane will be donated to the future Trump presidential library shortly before he leaves office. Ali Al-Ansari, Qatar’s Media Attaché to the U.S., confirmed to CBS News that the possible transfer of an aircraft for temporary use as Air Force One is under consideration between Qatar’s Ministry of Defense and the US Department of Defense, but the matter remains under review by the respective legal departments, and no decision has been made. But Al-Ansar said reports that the plane will be gifted during this trip are “inaccurate.” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said Sunday that “any gift given by a foreign government is always accepted in full compliance with all applicable laws. President Trump’s Administration is committed to full transparency.” Qatar has also offered to donate a plane to the Department of Defense, but the gift will not be donated or accepted during this trip to Qatar, a U.S. official said. Democratic Rep. Ritchie Torres of New York confirmed to CBS News that he sent a letter to the Government Accountability Office urging an investigation into the Trump administration accepting a plane as a gift. “With an estimated value of $400 million, the aerial palace would constitute the most valuable gift ever conferred on a President by a foreign government,” he wrote. Torres asked for an “immediate ethics review of the Qatari gift” and “a formal advisory opinion on whether the gift violates federal ethics regulations and the Emoluments Clause.” The president is departing Monday on his first major foreign trip of his second term, set to visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates on the four-day visit. Leavitt said Friday that the trip will focus on “strengthening ties between our nations,” citing Mr. Trump’s first trip in 2017 to the Middle East, where he “introduced his bold peace-through-strength foreign policy strategy.” “Now, eight years later, President Trump will return to re-emphasize his continued vision for a proud, prosperous and successful Middle East, where the United States and Middle Eastern nations are in cooperative relationships, and where extremism is defeated in place of commerce and cultural exchanges,” Leavitt said. Qatar’s Media Attaché to the U.S., Ali Al-Ansari, disputed reports, saying in a statement that the “possible transfer of an aircraft for temporary use as Air Force One is currently under consideration between Qatar’s Ministry of Defense and the U.S. Department of Defense,” while noting that “the matter remains under review by the respective legal departments, and no decision has been made.” Patrick Maguire and ******* James Inman contributed to this report. First group of White South Africans granted refugee status depart to U.S. First group of White South Africans granted refugee status depart to U.S. The first group of White South Africans who were granted refugee status by the U.S. is set to fly out of Johannesburg on Sunday, officials said. The flight from Johannesburg’s OR Tambo Airport was set to depart around 2 p.m. ET en route to Dakar for refueling before flying to Washington, D.C. The group includes 49 Afrikaner South Africans, made up of mainly families, as well as a few young couples in their twenties and older people. “The application for the permit (to land) said it’s the Afrikaners who are relocating to the USA as refugees,” Collen Msibi, a spokesperson for the South African Transport Ministry, told AFP. The plane – a U.S. charter aircraft – is set to arrive at Washington’s Dulles International Airport at about 6 a.m. on Monday, and then will fly to Texas. Msibi said his department had not received any other applications for further resettlement flights. U.S. officials have planned a Monday press event at Dulles airport to welcome the group, according to government documents obtained by CBS News last week. Sources familiar with the effort told CBS News the timing of the plan could change. In February, President Trump issued an executive order directing officials to use the U.S. refugee program to resettle Afrikaners, who are an ethnic group in South Africa made up of descendants of European colonists. Mr. Trump, at the time, claimed that White South Africans faced “government-sponsored race-based discrimination.” He cited a law that U.S. conservatives, like South African-born Elon Musk, have said allowed racially motivated seizures of land owned by White South Africans. The land expropriation law is meant to redress inequalities entrenched under the former apartheid system. South Africa’s government has strongly denied any land confiscations or racially motivated discrimination. The hastily arranged initiative to welcome Afrikaners stands in stark contrast to the Trump administration’s move to ban most other refugees from entering the U.S. The processing of Afrikaners granted refugee status has also been unusually fast. Before Mr. Trump’s second term, the State Department said the refugee process, on average, took between 18 to 24 months to complete due to background checks, medical screenings and other interviews. The Afrikaners ready to travel to the U.S. have gone through that process in a matter of months or even weeks. Meanwhile, relations between South Africa and the United States have nose-dived this year over a range of domestic and foreign policy issues, culminating in Washington’s expulsion of Pretoria’s ambassador in March. Mr. Trump said in March that any South African farmer seeking to “flee” would have a “rapid pathway” to US citizenship, despite halting all other refugee arrivals to the U.S. immediately after taking office in January. South Africa’s foreign ministry on Friday said the resettlement of Afrikaners “under the guise of being ‘refugees’ is entirely politically motivated and designed to question South Africa’s constitutional democracy”. It would, however, “not block citizens who seek to depart the country from doing so,” it added. In a statement, the State Department said the American Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa, has been interviewing those who have applied for resettlement to the U.S. under Mr. Trump’s directive to welcome Afrikaners and that it continues to receive inquiries. “While we are unable to comment on individual cases, the Department of State is prioritizing consideration for U.S. refugee resettlement of Afrikaners in South Africa who are victims of unjust racial discrimination,” the department added. White South Africans, who make up 7.3% of the population, generally enjoy a higher standard of living than the ****** majority of the country. Mainly Afrikaner-led governments imposed the brutal race-based apartheid system that denied ****** South Africans, who made up 75% of the population, political and economic rights. Trent Alexander-Arnold: Liverpool right-back booed against Arsenal Trent Alexander-Arnold: Liverpool right-back booed against Arsenal In 2021, Alexander-Arnold put pen-to-paper on a four-year contract. Two years later, Jurgen Klopp made him vice-captain. Fellow Liverpudlian Jamie Carragher, who spent his entire career at Anfield, summed up the emotions of the fans. “I think the manager will be shocked by how vociferous the reaction was,” Carragher said on Sky Sports. “That might be his last game for Liverpool but, if frustrated with Trent, sing Bradley’s name, sing Gerrard’s name. Don’t boo your players because it opens you up to criticism. “Liverpool supporters think playing for Liverpool is the utmost and when you’re a local player, like Trent is, like I was, you can’t see yourself as ******* than the club. “Supporters of any club wouldn’t want to hear this, but most players in that dressing room probably want to play for Real Madrid. “I’ve been in that dressing room, with players who have left us for Real Madrid or Barcelona. “It’s sometimes really hard for supporters. You feel like they fall for it every time, that a player loves them and then moves on.” Former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand posted on X: “I can’t believe Liverpool fans booing one of their own. “I understand that some of you guys are not happy with his decision etc BUT to boo Trent after he has won the lot with you is baffling! Didn’t cost you a penny.” Source link #Trent #AlexanderArnold #Liverpool #rightback #booed #Arsenal Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Kyriacou shines but can’t catch Thitikul in LPGA event Kyriacou shines but can’t catch Thitikul in LPGA event Steph Kyriacou has fallen short in her bid for a first LPGA Tour title despite a brilliant final round as Thailand’s Jeeno Thitikul closed with a three-under 69 for a four-shot victory over Celine Boutier in the Mizuho Americas Open. Thitikul, who captured the Race to CME Globe and its $4 million prize to end last season, played bogey-free over the final 27 holes at Liberty National over the weekend to win for the first time this year and the fifth time in her LPGA Tour career. Kyriacou had to settle for a tie for fifth after shooting a five-under 67, featuring seven birdies, which proved the best round of the day by anyone. Nelly Korda is still trying to win for the first time this year. She was within one shot of Thitikul until driving into the hazard on the par-four ninth and taking bogey. It was a downward spiral from there, as Korda played the back nine with two bogeys and no birdies and was never a factor the rest of the way. The final challenge came from Boutier, who was posed to catch the Thai player on the 15th hole when she hit her approach to 10 feet. Thitikul faced a tough par save from a bunker left of the green, with her foot up against the slope and having to clear another bunker to a back pin. Thitikul pulled off the shot perfectly to three feet to save par. Boutier not only missed her birdie chance, she missed the 30-inch comeback putt and made bogey. So, instead of a two-shot swing and a tie for the lead, Boutier fell three back with three holes to play. On the 16th, Boutier missed an eight-foot birdie putt and Thitikul made her par putt from seven feet to stay three shots behind. Thitikul all but ended the tournament with a 10-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole, and she capped off a clean par with a par save on the 18th. “I know that a lot of putts didn’t drop on the front nine, but I’m trying to do my best,” Thitikul said. “I was just trying to tell myself, ‘Be patient, it’s coming, it’s coming.’ That’s pretty much what I told myself today.” Thitikul finished at 17-under 271, while Boutier shot 72 to finish second, followed by Carlota Ciganda (70) and Andrea Lee (72), with Kyriacou level in fifth with Korda (73) and Yealimi Noh (72). Container shipping firms cull Asia-US service as Trump tariffs collapse trade Container shipping firms cull Asia-US service as Trump tariffs collapse trade By Lisa Baertlein LOS ANGELES (Reuters) -Major container shipping companies are suspending at least six scheduled weekly routes between China and the United States as President Donald Trump’s punishing tariffs on the world’s top exporting country collapse trade, maritime consultants said. The ships on those routes have the combined capacity to deliver 25,682 40-foot containers stuffed with toys, tennis shoes, car parts and things U.S. manufacturers use to produce goods each week – or more than 1.3 million 40-foot containers a year, based on capacity data provided in customer advisories. The service cuts, coupled with cancellations of individual voyages, come as hulking container ship operators move to mitigate fallout from Trump’s erratic trade policies. Policy makers, economists, and business owners have become increasingly hungry for information on ocean trade, responsible for 80% of the world’s commerce, because it is a gauge of global economic health. “This is not the precursor, it is the proof of a drop in economic activity,” Simon Sundboell, CEO of Danish maritime data provider eeSea, said of the container vessel capacity reductions now underway. The route suspensions include scheduled weekly services operated by MSC, Zim and the Ocean Alliance that includes Cosco, Evergreen, CMA-CGM and Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), Sundboell said. Four of the service cuts affect West Coast ports, one impacts the East Coast and one hits the Gulf Coast, he said. The container shipping companies culling those services either declined to comment or did not immediately respond. Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd’s Gemini Alliance have not suspended services – even though both partners experienced significant tariff-related China to U.S. booking cuts in April and have swapped out some ships for smaller vessels. Representatives from the U.S. and China are meeting this weekend in Switzerland after more than two months of stalemate over trade. BLANKETY BLANK Global shipping companies use service suspensions and cancellations of individual voyages, known as blank sailings, to shelter profits by ensuring they do not have more ships on the water than are needed by customers. That reduces unnecessary overhead costs and keeps supply and demand in balance, supporting competing off-contract spot rates. Blank sailings increased significantly after the COVID pandemic upended global trade in 2020 – and are part of why global container ship operators have been enjoying record profits. Major U.S. retailers like Amazon.com and Walmart, which account for nearly half of global container trade, responded to Trump’s 145% tariffs on China last month by pausing or cancelling factory orders after those import duties more than doubled the cost of goods made in China. Story Continues Canceled, or blanked, individual voyages on the vital Transpacific route from Asia to North America surged from 9% in week ended March 30 to 24% in week ended May 4, maritime consultancy Drewry said in a podcast earlier this week. Drewry’s data shows blank sailings reduced capacity on the Asia to West Coast North America routes by 20% in April and 12% so far in May. The cuts hit slightly harder on the North American East Coast, reducing 22% in April and 18% thus far in May, the consultancy said. MSC, the world’s largest container ship operator, in April canceled 30% of its scheduled Transpacific voyages – more than any other container carrier, said Daniela Ghimp, project manager for ocean freight rate benchmarking at Drewry. The Premier Alliance, composed of Ocean Network Express (ONE), Hyundai Merchant Marine (HMM) and Yang Ming Marine Transportation, leads so far in May with a 20% blank sailing rate, Ghimp said. ONE declined comment, while HMM and Yang Ming did not immediately respond. The full effect of Trump’s tariffs will likely be delayed until July, when overall U.S. container import volume could be down 25% or more from the year earlier, said John McCown, senior fellow at the Center for Maritime Strategy. “Something’s gotta give, and I believe either considerably more capacity will have to be culled, or spot rates will start to ******,” said Alan Murphy, CEO of supply chain adviser Sea-Intelligence.
