Argentina’s top court finds 80 boxes of Nazi materials in its basement Argentina’s top court finds 80 boxes of Nazi materials in its basement BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) -Dozens of boxes of Nazi material confiscated by Argentinean authorities during World War II were recently rediscovered in the Supreme Court’s basement, the court said on Sunday. The 83 boxes were sent by the Germany embassy in Tokyo to Argentina in June 1941 aboard the Japanese steamship “Nan-a-Maru,” according to the history that the court was able to piece together, it said in a statement. At the time, the large shipment drew the attention of authorities, who feared its contents could affect Argentina’s neutrality in the war. Despite claims at the time from ******* diplomatic representatives that the boxes held personal items, Argentine customs authorities searched five boxes at random. They found postcards, photographs and propaganda material from the Nazi regime, as well as thousands of notebooks belonging to the Nazi party. A federal judge confiscated the materials, and referred the matter to the Supreme Court. It was not immediately clear why the items were sent to Argentina or what, if any, action the Supreme Court took at the time. Eighty-four years later, court staffers came across the boxes as they prepared for a Supreme Court museum. “Upon opening one of the boxes, we identified material intended to consolidate and propagate Adolf Hitler’s ideology in Argentina during the Second World War,” the court said. The court has now transferred the boxes to a room equipped with extra security measures, and invited the Holocaust Museum in Buenos Aires to participate in their preservation and inventory. Experts will also examine them for any clues about still-unknown aspects of the Holocaust, such as international financing networks used by the Nazis. Argentina remained neutral in World War II until 1944, when it broke relations with Axis powers. The South American country declared war on Germany and Japan the following year. From 1933 to 1954, according to the Holocaust Museum, 40,000 Jews entered Argentina as they fled Nazi persecution in Europe. Argentina is home to the largest population of Jews in Latin America. A wedding dress, party plans… and Alan ********’s four suits A wedding dress, party plans… and Alan ********’s four suits Emma Saunders Culture reporter Getty Images It is trailed as the biggest night in the ***’s TV calendar and the 2025 Bafta TV awards didn’t disappoint. We were on the red carpet before heading backstage to get all the gossip from the winners, grabbing some of the big moments you might have missed. So whether it’s Gavin & Stacey that floats your boat or Baby Reindeer that’s more your thing, read on! Stacey Solomon wore her wedding dress The Sort Your Life Out star was nominated for two Baftas this year and rocked up on the red carpet in a new version of the wedding dress she wore to marry Joe Swash in 2022. “I decided to have my wedding dress reworked today because wearing it once feels like a travesty,” she told her Instagram followers. We agree! And it was very in keeping with Stacey’s upcycling hacks that she likes to share. Alan ********’s ever-changing wardrobeGetty Images Alan ******** rocking the 1970s gameshow host look The Scottish actor and host of the US version of The Traitors greeted us on the red carpet on Sunday afternoon in a ****** morning-style suit with fabulous white cape detail that looked like angel wings. Our evening’s host was introduced ahead of his arrival on stage in a video showing him in the Traitors’ turret, jokingly claiming that taking the helm at the Bafta TV awards was “the 12th biggest honour of my life” and promising not to have a wardrobe malfunction (but “whatever pops out pops out.” Oo-er). The audience seemed to enjoy his gentle – and sometimes acerbic – humour at their expense and he treated us to three, yes THREE, costume changes. The morning suit was replaced with an electric-blue shiny suit featuring wide-leg trousers, complete with leopard-print shirt and corsage. That later changed to a pale pink suit with silver beading before a final switch to a dark brown velvet number. “I changed again, so sue me,” he told viewers. Ruth Jones is planning a new project with James CordenGetty Images Fresh from accepting her Bafta for best female comedy performance for her role in Gavin & Stacey: The Finale opposite James Corden, Jones said: “I love working with James, I really do. And I hope that we will carry on working together… we will. Because we both like sitting in a room together. We do a lot of napping, but we do write as well.” She said people have stopped asking about whether there will be any more Gavin & Stacey after last year’s special which saw her character Nessa marry Corden’s Smithy. “You don’t really want to think about Ness and Smithy in a domestic situation, putting the bins out.” Danny Dyer says some people will be ‘fuming’ at his winGetty Images Dyer is sporting a moustache for the filming of the second series of Rivals The former EastEnders star picked up best male comedy performance for his role in Mr Bigstuff, in which he played one of two estranged brothers with very different personalities who try to rebuild their relationship. And afterwards he said: “I can’t believe it. Some people will be fuming (at his win). But I’ve earned it. It’s like ‘wow, I’ve made it’. “I’ve never really done it [comedy], I’ve not been known for it. My first outing in scripted comedy and to nick one of these is mental.” And what could top that? A win for his football team earlier that afternoon apparently. “West Ham beat Man Utd and my future son-in-law [Jarrod Bowen] scored a goal… there’s got to be a catch somewhere!” Mr Loverman winners were ready to partyGetty Images Watch out – we hope Ariyon doesn’t stand on his Bafta when he dances around it The adaptation of Bernadine Everastio’s book Mr Loverman saw both its leading actor (Lennie James) and supporting actor (Ariyon Bakare) win acting prizes. James described it as “the part of a lifetime” and pointed out that it was rare to have a drama about a “******, ******, old couple… I hope it sparks conversations in the wider community.” Bakare gave one of the most emotional acceptance speeches of the night and backstage, explained why. “I was homeless when I was 14. You don’t ever think you’ll do something like this. I’d go in and see half a play, I couldn’t afford to see a whole show.” Both stars were planning to celebrate in style. James simply told journalists, “I’m going to get wrecked,” while Bakare was planning to “dance around my Bafta like women dance round their handbags”. Why not? ITV’s Post Office drama hopes to create more headlines Following a powerful speech about the impact the drama about the Post Office scandal had, the cast and creatives headed backstage to make a plea. The drama’s writer, Gwyneth Hughes, pointed out that many of the sub-postmasters who were wrongly convicted are still waiting for compensation. “Several compensation schemes are going on. Some of our main characters have not been paid.” She said she hoped the Bafta win would raise awareness. “If we’re on the front pages tomorrow… I hope it helps.” Producer Patrick Spence also made an impassioned entreaty: “It’s not over. We beg you… get the story out.” When the BBC Breakfast team won the news coverage award later in the evening, it was for a Post Office special. The programme’s editor, Richard Frediani, said: “We’ve even got a story about the Post Office on the programme tomorrow in terms of someone’s campaign for compensation. We will continue to tell their stories and ask questions on their behalf.” Kirsty Wark thinks Newsnight is ‘safe’ Bafta Fellowship honouree Kirsty Wark, who left BBC Two’s Newsnight programme in 2024 after 30 years, joked that she probably got her award “for being 70, who knows?” The long-running show was shortened by 15 minutes a year ago and its investigative films were cut. But Wark thinks it will survive. “If Newsnight wasn’t there, they’d have to reinvent it. I’d bet £500 that Newsnight is safe. You still need that programme at the end of the day to see what just happened.” What can we look forward to next on the telly?Getty Images Alma’s Not Normal star and creator Sophie Willan picked up the Bafta for best scripted comedy Plenty of the stars teased us with nods to possibilities of future series. Lenny James told us on the red carpet that despite being considered a “limited series”, we may not have seen the back of Mr Loverman: “I don’t know that it’s done.” Anna Maxwell Martin discussed the possible return of Line of Duty but if it does come back, sadly, she won’t be reprising her role as DCS Patricia Carmichael. “Sometimes you’re not allowed to revise certain roles due to contracts with other streamers,” she explained to the BBC on the red carpet. The team behind Shogun, which won best international show, revealed that there will be a “10-year time leap in part two”. Alma’s Not Normal won’t be returning for a third series having won the Bafta for best scripted comedy for season two. But creator Sophie Willan told us “there might be something else in the pipeline”. A Christmas special perhaps? Clive Myrie wants the Pope to join him on his travels The daytime Bafta gong went to Clive Myrie’s BBC Two show Caribbean Adventure and he’ll be heading to Africa next week to film the second series. And who would he like to take with him? “The new Pope – I think we could have some interesting converations. It’s got Bafta written all over it!” But the BBC news anchor won’t be giving up the day job anytime soon. “I may end up doing more entertainment stuff as I’m an old bloke… but news is the core, I won’t do anything that distracts me [from that].” The Traitors misses outGetty Images The hit BBC show set in a Scottish castle missed out on the three prizes it was nominated for, including best reality series. That went to Channel 4’s Jury: ******* Trial, which restaged court proceedings in front of two juries of ordinary people. A second series is in the works and said the next case is “really relatable.” “Technically it’s a reality show but it isn’t about something like dating”, the team said backstage, joking that it was “a bit surreal” to go up against shows like Love is Blind. Thunder fix crunch time woes, level NBA playoffs series Thunder fix crunch time woes, level NBA playoffs series The young but top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder have finally outplayed the Denver Nuggets in crunch time, winning 92-87 to level their NBA Western Conference semi-final series at 2-2. All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander led the way in Sunday’s away victory, scoring 25 points. The Thunder trailed 69-63 after three quarters and fell behind by eight when Peyton Watson started the fourth quarter by swishing a hook shot. But Oklahoma City used an 11-0 run fueled by reserves Cason Wallace, who had a pair of 3-pointers, and Aaron Wiggins, who added another, to take control. The Nuggets had outlasted the youngest team in the NBA with wins in Games 1 and 3, crediting their playoff experience and championship pedigree. And they looked poised to put the regular season leaders on the cusp of elimination when Aaron Gordon’s turnaround jumper made it 73-66. This time, however, it was the Thunder who came up big down the stretch and the Nuggets who fumbled away the chance to put OKC in a 3-1 hole. “We kind of lost our way defensively, especially in the third, but did a great job of course-correcting to start the fourth,” said Thunder coach Mark Daigneault. “That group to start the fourth was huge to give us a lead, and then the defence down the stretch was really, really good.” Game 5 is Tuesday night back in Oklahoma City, where the Thunder had a 43-point blowout of the Nuggets in Game 2. Nikola Jokic led Denver with 27 points and 13 rebounds. Christian Braun and Jamal Murray each had 17 points and Gordon scored 15. Michael Porter Jr. scored just three points after scoring 15 Friday night. Wiggins and Wallace each added 11 points and Alex Caruso and Jalen Williams each scored 10. Williams was 2 for 13 from the floor after scoring 32 in Game 3. Both teams went 3 for 22 from deep in the first half and they slumbered through a combined 25-point first quarter, which tied an NBA playoff record for fewest points in the opening quarter. Oklahoma City were ahead 42-36 at the half. “Give their team credit,” said Nuggets interim coach David Adelman. “In a disgusting basketball game, they did enough to win.” Source link #Thunder #fix #crunch #time #woes #level #NBA #playoffs #series Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq futures surge as markets cheer US-China trade talks Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq futures surge as markets cheer US-China trade talks Stock futures on Wall Street surged Sunday evening as the US cited “substantial progress” in trade negotiations with China, raising hopes of a potential deescalation in tensions between the world’s two largest economies. Dow Jones Industrial Average (YM=F) futures rose by over 400 points, or 1%, while S&P 500 (ES=F) futures advanced 1.2%. Nasdaq 100 (NQ=F) futures led gains with a 1.6% jump. The market-friendly momentum followed a weekend of high-level trade talks in Switzerland, which Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent called “productive.” While details remain scarce, Bessent promised further clarity during a briefing on Monday. The rally in futures comes after a downbeat week for stocks. All three major indexes fell last week, with the Dow snapping a two-week winning streak in the latest volatile action on Wall Street. Inflation fears are gripping markets, with the impact of sweeping 145% tariffs on ******** imports, a move met with retaliatory 125% duties from Beijing, coming to American consumers’ pockets. Year-ahead inflation expectations sit at their highest level in more than 40 years. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick added Sunday that the U.S. remains committed to a 10% baseline tariff rate on all imports to the US, signaling the administration’s aggressive stance even as talks with more nations are underway. Traders will get their first sense of the initial inflationary effects of the tariffs with the release of key inflation data this week. April’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) report is due Tuesday, followed by retail sales and the Producer Price Index (PPI) on Thursday. Notable earnings this week include Fox Corporation (FOXA), Monday.com (MNDY), Chegg (CHGG) all releasing reports Monday, with Sony (SONY), Alibaba (BABA), and Wallmart (WMT) all due later in the week. West Coast star Harley Reid praised but Eagles left searching for support, first win of 2025 season West Coast star Harley Reid praised but Eagles left searching for support, first win of 2025 season Kane Cornes has praised the effort of West Coast young gun Harley Reid in the last-gasp loss to Richmond, saying it looked like he was going to “single-handedly win it” for the Eagles. But the Seven commentator and analyst was scathing of what he considered a lack of support for the former No.1 pick in the two-point defeat on Sunday. Reid played one of his best games of the season with 18 disposals, six score involvements and seven inside 50s as the Tigers held on in a thrilling clash between the bottom-four sides at the MCG. Cornes said it looked like “Harley Reid or nothing” was going to snatch victory, despite substitute Tom Gross being mowed down as he attempted to steady for a potentially match-winning shot on goal. “He was the one that looked as though he was going to drag them over the line,” Cornes told SEN. “Which was a credit to him and how hard he was trying. It wasn’t perfect and it wasn’t polished at times, five free kicks against, but he just needs help. He needs help and he’s got no help.” He was gobsmacked that Richmond did not send a player to run with the 20-year-old. Camera IconHarley Reid. Credit: Quinn Rooney/Getty Images Cornes said he would be shocked if Reid is given that much freedom from opponents going forward. “How you’re Richmond and you don’t tag Harley Reid is bizarre to me. How you’re any team who plays against West Coast and you don’t tag him, get in his face and under his skin… because he’s the only one that has the prospect of winning the game for you,” he said. “He was the only one (on Sunday) that looked as though he was going to single-handedly win it. Yet, I see him running around with no one on him. “I’d be surprised if he’s allowed to do that much more, particularly because there is no one else who looks dangerous through that midfield for the Eagles.” Camera IconHarley Reid. Credit: Morgan Hancock/AFL Photos/via Getty Images North Melbourne great David King questioned the move of star midfielder Tim Kelly into the forward line, particularly when the game was on the line late in the last quarter. The 2023 club champion has struggled for form this season, including being dropped to the WAFL, and didn’t attend a single centre bounce against the Tigers. “The Tim Kelly discussion is an interesting one for me. Didn’t go in the middle (on Sunday) and only had 12 touches playing different roles,” King said. “Nine score involvements and when the game is there to be won, he’s on the bench for the last five minutes. “I’m looking at that thinking, ‘OK, I understand you want to be harder on these leaders and demand more’ but you probably still need him out there at the end when the game is there to be decided.” Despite the result, King said West Coast took “a big step” forward, as the hunt continues for their first win of the season. “I look at the Eagles and their ability to adapt to this new game plan. There’s times when you can see what the coach is doing,” he said. “I think this is a big step. We’re only nine weeks in. (The Eagles kicked) 7.7 (49) from stoppages, 49 points. 14 scores from stoppages. “Their program, in terms of the structural side of the game, big tick. Well done to the coach for embedding that. “They’ve got some work to do with consistency. The kids got a lot of feedback.” West Coast will host St Kilda at Optus Stadium next week before a tough road trip to Adelaide and a tricky match-up with Geelong at home before a crunch clash with North Melbourne in Bunbury on June 8. Pope Leo XIV identifies biggest threat to humanity Pope Leo XIV identifies biggest threat to humanity The Brief Pope Leo XIV is echoing the concerns of his predecessor, identifying artificial intelligence as the biggest threat to humanity. In his first formal audience Saturday, Leo also committed to making the Catholic Church more inclusive. Pope Leo XIV made a surprise visit Saturday to a sanctuary south of Rome, where he laid out the vision for his papacy and identified what he sees as the greatest challenge facing humanity. In his first formal audience, Leo repeatedly cited former Pope Francis and the Argentine pope’s own 2013 mission statement, making clear a commitment to making the Catholic Church more inclusive and attentive to the faithful and a church that looks out for the “least and rejected.” What did Leo XIV say about artificial intelligence? What they’re saying Leo XIV identified AI as one of the main issues facing humanity, saying it poses challenges to defending human dignity, justice and labor. RELATED: Pope Leo XIV’s first address: Full text Leo said he identified with his predecessor, who addressed the great social question of the day posed by the industrial revolution in the encyclical. (Photo by Francesco Sforza – ******** Media via ******** Pool/Getty Images) “In our own day, the church offers everyone the treasury of its social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and to developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges for the defense of human dignity, justice and labor,” he said. RELATED: What is an Augustinian? The backstory Toward the end of his pontificate, Francis became increasingly vocal about the threats to humanity posed by AI and called for an international treaty to regulate it. He warned that such powerful technology risks turning human relations into mere algorithms. Francis brought his message to the Group of Seven industrialized nations when he addressed their summit last year, insisting AI must remain human-centric so that decisions about when to use weapons or even less lethal tools always remain made by humans and not machines. RELATED: List: Countries with the most, fewest popes Francis also used his 2024 annual peace message to call for an international treaty to ensure AI is developed and used ethically, arguing that a technology lacking human values of compassion, mercy, morality and forgiveness is too perilous to develop unchecked. Dig deeper Leo referred to AI in explaining the choice of his name: His namesake, Pope Leo XIII, was pope from 1878 to 1903 and laid the foundation for modern Catholic social thought. He did so most famously with his 1891 encyclical Rerum Novarum, which addressed workers’ rights and capitalism at the dawn of the industrial age. The late pope criticized both laissez-faire capitalism and state-centric socialism, giving shape to a distinctly Catholic vein of economic teaching. Nelson Asofa-Solomona returns with a bang for Melbourne Storm to make them a more imposing premiership contender Nelson Asofa-Solomona returns with a bang for Melbourne Storm to make them a more imposing premiership contender While Ryan Papenhuyzen routed the Wests Tigers on Sunday, it was the sizeable return of man mountain Nelson Asofa-Solomona that looms as the crucial addition for Melbourne Storm’s premiership ambitions after getting his “weight and training” back to standards. The Kiwi international played his first game since round 3 in Storm’s 64-0 win at AAMI Park, rattling Tigers defenders and pounding his way to one of his team’s 11-tries. Asofa-Solomona was a late inclusion for the game, and only just, having made a delayed start to the season because of suspension, as well as overcoming injuries and enduring a concussion lay-off, before returning in the Queensland Cup. Storm coach Bellamy said his enforcer, who added boxing to his off-season activities, took a “little while” to hit the standards expected to get back into the NRL team. But the master coach “liked what he saw” from the 29-year-old at the lower level last week. “He’s been really invested in his training and his preparation to get back,” Bellamy said. “He got suspended, then he had the head knock, so it took him a little while to get back from that. Injured Storm star Harry Grant urged his own grumpy coach Craig Bellamy to crack a smile as Melbourne demolished the Tigers. “He’s been aware of his weight and aware of his training to get ready to return. And he played two games up in the QRL competition, and we really like what we saw last week.” Asofa-Solomona came off the bench on Sunday and ran for 124m from 13 runs, the most of any of Melbourne’s front rowers, with his 59 post-contact metres showing the impact he can have. His influence looms large as Storm moved back to third on the NRL ladder and Bellamy said more of the same from Asofa-Solomona would remind everyone how “important” he is to the team’s premiership chances. “It wasn’t easy to fit him back in the side, actually … we’re going pretty well,” Bellamy said. “But to put be able to put him back in and see him play like that, we just know how important he is to the team, and hopefully he can stay invested and be disciplined with his weight and his training and we get more of that.” Source link #Nelson #AsofaSolomona #returns #bang #Melbourne #Storm #imposing #premiership #contender Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Igloo Recalls 150,000 Coolers Over Amputation Fears Igloo Recalls 150,000 Coolers Over Amputation Fears Cooler season is upon us, which could be bad news for Igloo owners. In February, the popular cooler brand was forced to issue a recall of more than 1 million coolers that were posing a risk to customers’ fingertips. Now, the number of affected products has grown. Related: Major Car Brand Recalls More Than 400,000 Vehicles On Thursday, according to The New York Times, Igloo announced that it was expanding its original recall to include more than 150,000 Flip & Tow Rolling Coolers due to the risk they pose to consumers. According to the company, the device’s tow handle design “can pinch consumers’ fingertips against the cooler, posing fingertip amputation and crushing hazards.” In the three months since the recall was originally issued, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that an additional 78 people have sustained injuries to their fingertips, from cuts to bone fractures and, in the most extreme cases, fingertip amputations. While the bulk of the recalled items—approximately 130,000 of them—were sold in the U.S., another 20,000 coolers in Canada and just under 6,000 in Mexico were included in the latest recall. How Do I Know Whether My Cooler Was Recalled? If you have a 90-quart Igloo Flip & Tow Rolling Cooler at home and are wondering if your item is impacted, here’s what to know: The recall applies to coolers manufactured before January 2024. You can find the manufacture date imprinted on the bottom of the item “in a circular pattern with an arrow pointing to the month of manufacture and the last two digits of the year of manufacture inside the circle,” according to the company. The coolers all have a tow handle, which is the piece that is causing the problem, and have the word “IGLOO” printed on the side. Affected coolers were sold between January 2019 and January 2025 and were sold through a variety of retail stores, including Costco, Target, Academy, and *****’s, as well as online through Amazon, Igloocoolers.com. The item retailed for between $80 and $140. What Should I Do If My Cooler Was Recalled? If your cooler is on the list of recalled items, Igloo will send you a replacement handle at no cost. Stop using the cooler immediately and contact the company to receive your replacement. You can find out more by visiting the recall page here. When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Credit: rez-art via Getty Images For most of her life, Alyssa Fraser took comfort in cooking. Fraser, a former food reporter from Minnesota, used to relish the process of whipping up her favorite chicken and vegetable recipe or batches of pasta. But after she started taking the popular weight-loss medication Wegovy, her culinary interests seemed to disappear because she became disinterested in food — and certain types of food became particularly off-putting. Many savory meals lost their appeal, and some proteins began to taste too much like the “barnyard” the animal came from, she says. Even her favorite wine, which usually tasted crisp and citrusy, seemed weirdly “vegetal.” Similar to Fraser, other users of Wegovy (known in its generic form as semaglutide), along with those of Ozempic (a form of semaglutide used to treat type 2 diabetes), Zepbound (known generically as tirzepatide) and other medications broadly called glucagonlike peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, have described peculiar changes in the way food tastes. GLP-1 drugs — initially designed to help treat type 2 diabetes by triggering insulin release — can cause weight loss by making people feel full faster. But some people report that in addition to an increase in satiety, they experience changes in their preferences for specific foods — they find meats suddenly repulsive, fried foods too heavy and savory snacks unappealing. On online forums and in scientific surveys, some people have expressed a general loss of interest in food overall — a few have even said that the drugs have redefined food as a necessity rather than a joy for them. These accounts may even be captured in grocery store data that suggest people on GLP-1 medications spend less on food, especially calorie-dense and processed items. Some preliminary evidence suggests changes in food preferences might play a role in weight loss, but it’s not clear how much such changes contribute to that result compared with the medications’ effect on satiety. And research on the phenomenon has mostly involved animal models or small studies of humans. Experts, however, are starting to gain some clues as to how common these apparent shifts in food preference and taste really are among users and what might be behind them. Related: Ozempic in a pill? New oral drug may work as well as Ozempic-style injectables A recent study published in Food Quality and Preference found that people on GLP-1 medications reported reaching for processed foods, as well as refined grains and beef, less often. They also said they were drinking less soda and other sweetened drinks and increasing their intake of fruit, leafy greens and water. Further, they reported consuming about 700 fewer calories per day. These findings rely on self-reported data, however, which can sometimes be unreliable, says Brandon McFadden, a professor in food policy economics at the University of Arkansas and co-author of the study. Additionally, although GLP-1 users reported eating fewer calorie-dense foods, most people didn’t necessarily lose all desire for them. This is because liking a food is different from wanting it, says John Blundell, an emeritus professor in psychobiology at the University of Leeds in England, who was not involved in the recent paper. A person might not find a food particularly tasty (in other words, they might not enjoy the specific sensory experience of consuming it) but still have a strong behavioral drive to eat it. GLP-1 medications seem to involve the reverse: people still like certain foods but have less of an immediate urge to eat them. These drugs mimic a hormone called GLP-1, which the gut naturally secretes in response to food and which binds to the hormone’s receptors around the body — including in brain areas involved in appetite regulation and in reward pathways that reduce the pleasure response to food. Researchers have found that this is the primary way the drugs cause people to lose weight, and some think it might be involved in altered food preferences. Desires for specific foods can change depending on whether a person is generally hungry or full. For example, when you’re hungry, you’re more likely to want meaty, high-protein or sometimes high-**** foods rather than sweet ones, Blundell explains. “When you become full, the reverse happens,” he says: a big piece of meat or a high-**** food becomes aversive — but you might feel like you have a so-called second stomach for dessert. One plausible explanation for this, Blundell says, could be that GLP-1 drugs’ satiating effect simply makes such end-of-meal preferences kick in. It’s also possible that some aspects of the drugs’ compounds could directly act on specific food preferences through some other biological mechanism. “But it hasn’t been demonstrated,” says Blundell, who is working with a food company to develop foods that are more palatable for people on GLP-1 medications. Blundell led a small study, published in 2017, that found people taking semaglutide not only reduced their overall daily food intake but also preferred and consumed fewer high-**** and savory foods. Previous research that he published in 2007 showed that being full also diminishes similar cravings. But satiety alone may not fully explain the shift in eating preferences. Emerging evidence and anecdotal user accounts suggest changes to the body’s taste mechanisms could also play a role. Some users describe flavors becoming stronger or unpleasant while on the medications, though individual experiences seem to vary: Siobhan, a Los Angeles–based writer, who has been taking Wegovy since 2021 and withheld her last name for privacy, says she still finds fatty foods such as French fries appealing — but her favorite food, panang curry, has become too bitter. “I’ve been eating that curry for 20 years,” Siobhan says. “It just didn’t taste right anymore.” Two-year Wegovy user Sarah Streby says she can no longer stomach eggs or broccoli, and her love for spicy food has waned — causing her to change how she cooks for her family. “Now everyone’s complaining the food is too mild because can’t handle the spice,” she says. At press time, Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Wegovy and Ozempic, had not responded to a request for comment from Scientific American. A spokesperson for Eli Lilly, which makes the weight-loss drug Zepbound, told Scientific American in an e-mail, “We do not have data to share concerning changes in food taste or preference among individuals taking GLP-1 medications.” The spokesperson added that known side effects are listed on the medication’s labels and that anyone experiencing those side effects should contact their health care provider. Scientists have found GLP-1 receptors in human taste buds, which hints at a possible explanation for alterations in taste, but findings remain mixed. Some past research has found that people with a higher body weight tend to perceive flavors less intensely, and some evidence suggests this may prompt people to eat more in an attempt to get a ******* sensory reward. In the case of sweet foods, people with a higher body weight also may be less able to perceive a high sugar content, though findings on this have been contradictory. A small study presented at the Endocrine Society’s 2024 annual conference found that women taking semaglutide were more sensitive to taste compared with those on a placebo. Brain scans showed increased activity in a region involved in processing sensory rewards when participants tasted something sweet, suggesting that semaglutide may heighten taste perception and make certain foods less appealing. But another study published in March in Physiology & Behavior seems to suggest the opposite. It found that 46 people taking these medications experienced a reduced sensitivity to all five basic tastes — sweet, sour, salty, bitter and brothy (or umami) — compared with people in a control group. Past studies in mice linked the activation of GLP-1 receptors to alterations in sweet taste perception, but researchers were surprised to see that the effect in humans was broader than anticipated, says Richard Doty, director of the Smell and Taste Center at the University of Pennsylvania and co-author of the March paper. Previous research that linked GLP-1 medications to alterations in taste has mostly looked at diabetic populations, Doty says, adding that “the focus has always been on sugar, and so people haven’t looked at the other sensory systems any great detail.” He suspects the GLP-1 receptors found in taste buds are behind the March findings, “but we really don’t know; there needs to be more research on that.” RELATED STORIES —Ozempic-like drugs may treat alcohol addiction, study finds —$3 million Breakthrough Prize awarded to developers of Ozempic-style drugs —Ozempic-style drugs tied to more than 60 health benefits and risks in biggest study-of-its-kind For some, the drugs’ effects on satiety and taste are welcome changes that make it easier to eat less. But for others, it’s more complicated. “Not only am I not cooking or really taking an interest in food — if I want it, it’s sweets,” Fraser says. “And even then, if it’s super sweet, I’ll take a bite or two, and I’m like, I gotta put it down.” She says savory foods have lost their appeal entirely. Fraser is still considering the trade-offs for the improvements she’s seen in her health as she navigates this shift and deals with the loss of a loved hobby. But “the mental load of weight loss has been greatly reduced,” she says, “and that is worth it to me.” This article was first published at Scientific American. © ScientificAmerican.com. I’m a longevity researcher — this cheap, tasty snack can help you live to 100 I’m a longevity researcher — this cheap, tasty snack can help you live to 100 Pop quiz: What’s an affordable, popular and delicious snack that could help you live to be 100? Hint — it’s not kale chips. Dan Buettner reveals “the best snack to live to 100.” Instagram/@danbuettner In a recent Instagram video, longevity expert Dan Buettner shared a “centenarian-approved” treat that you probably already have in your pantry. “Air-popped popcorn,” he reveals. “It’s very high in fiber, it’s very high in complex carbohydrates, it even has more polyphenols than a lot of vegetables.” According to the Mayo Clinic, eating whole grains — such as brown rice, oatmeal and, yes, popcorn — can lower your blood pressure and LDL “bad cholesterol” levels, thereby reducing your risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and colon *******. Research has also shown that incorporating more whole grains — like popcorn — into your diet can reduce your risk of dementia. Popcorn is very high in fiber, complex carbohydrates and polyphenols. Since it’s low calorie and high in fiber, popcorn can also aid in weight management by promoting a feeling of fullness. However, to maximize its health benefits, it’s important to enjoy popcorn air-popped instead of laden with butter, so as to avoid excessive calories and ****. Contrary to what most people think — you don’t need an air fryer to make air-popped popcorn. In fact, some experts advise against this option as it can burn the popcorn and create a fire hazard. Witnesses stunned as ‘fireball’ meteor lights up Perth skies Witnesses stunned as ‘fireball’ meteor lights up Perth skies Residents in Western Australia have been stunned by a “fireball” meteor that lit up the skies. The bright fireball passed through the skies about 6am on Sunday over the Central Wheatbelt, producing a brilliant yellow flash and a trail of bright green. Witnesses were able to catch a glimpse of the early-morning meteor from Perth to the Goldfields, however, experts are yet to determine where it eventually landed. Camera IconResidents in Western Australia have been stunned as a meteor lit up the skies on Sunday morning. Supplied Credit: Supplied The Perth Observatory said the astronomical sight was “most likely an iron meteor” which had been “orbiting within the inner Solar System”. “To shine that brightly, the fireball — technically known as a bolide — would have been about the size of a cricket ball to a basketball,” the observatory said online. Camera IconThe ‘fireball’ meteor left a green trail in its wake Supplied Credit: Supplied According to Perth Observatory’s Matthew Woods, the meteor would have been travelling between 16 to 60km per second, leaving behind a trail of green as the built-up friction melted. He told 9News it was “one hell of a meteor”. “That was very nice … little surprise for Mother’s Day,” he said. Camera IconSome thought the light was the moon. Supplied Credit: SuppliedCamera IconThe meteor was spotted across much of the state. Supplied Credit: Supplied Online, witnesses were dumbfounded by the “spectacular” sight, with some believing it was an aeroplane. “Never seen anything like it,” one person wrote. “Thought someone was driving at us with high beams on at first,” said another, who watched it pass overhead from Newdegate. A resident from Mt Magnet said they initially thought the “huge and burning bright orange-red” light was “the moon until it moved”. Camera IconThe meteor created a bright orange and red light. However, Curtin University astrophysicist Steven Tingay told the ABC it was unlikely the fallen spacecraft, which likely landed over the Indian Ocean on Saturday, though European and US agencies are yet to confirm its exact location. Nintendo now says it has the right to brick your Switch if it thinks you’re pirating games or modifying the console Nintendo now says it has the right to brick your Switch if it thinks you’re pirating games or modifying the console When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Credit: Nintendo / Illumination First spotted by Game File (readers may encounter a paywall), Nintendo has recently changed its online user agreement in multiple consumer-unfriendly ways just before the launch of the Switch 2. Chief among them: Nintendo asserts the right to render your console “permanently unusable” if it determines you’re in violation of the agreement. Nintendo’s specific new phrasing, distinct from its prior EULA from 2021, is that “You acknowledge that if you fail to comply with the foregoing restrictions Nintendo may render the Nintendo Account Services and/or the applicable Nintendo device [emphasis mine] permanently unusable in whole or in part.” The restrictions in question are that you may not: “Publish, copy, modify, reverse engineer, lease, rent, decompile, disassemble, distribute, offer for *****, or create derivative works of any portion of the Nintendo Account Services.” “Bypass, modify, decrypt, defeat, tamper with, or otherwise circumvent any of the functions or protections of the Nintendo Account Services, including through the use of any hardware or software that would cause the Nintendo Account Services to operate other than in accordance with its documentation and intended use.” “Obtain, install or use any unauthorized copies of Nintendo Account Services.” “Exploit the Nintendo Account Services in any manner other than to use them in accordance with the applicable documentation and intended use, in each case, without Nintendo’s written consent or express authorization, or unless otherwise expressly permitted by applicable law.” For context, the same section of the EULA used to read: “You are not allowed to lease, rent, sublicense, publish, copy, modify, adapt, translate, reverse engineer, decompile or disassemble all or any portion of the Nintendo Account Services without Nintendo’s written consent, or unless otherwise expressly permitted by applicable law.” The sections I most take issue with are the prohibitions on copying, modifying, or decompiling software—particularly as it no longer accounts for it being “expressly permitted by applicable law”—as well as hardware/software modifications “that would cause the Nintendo Account Services to operate other than in accordance with its documentation and intended use.” No game or hardware modding, no extracting ROMs—something Nintendo continuously asserts we cannot do, even though it is a legally protected consumer right—and no dual booting to another OS. Credit: Nintendo There’s also the very legitimate concern of the notoriously heavy-handed, litigious company acting on false positives. I don’t know what means Nintendo has to detect such activity and kill a console, but I’m getting a clear message: You spent $450 on this hardware, but Nintendo does not think you own it. There are plenty of legitimate reasons to jailbreak or modify a console, or extract a ROM from a game you own: Many original Switch games run better via PC emulation than on the original console, and Nintendo is only just catching up to that capability with the Switch 2’s potentially compromised backwards-compatibility. Even more pressing is the inevitable discontinuation of proprietary online services, like we saw recently with the 3DS and Wii U. Just before that was finalized, Nintendo pushed an update to 3DS consoles which made them harder to jailbreak. This is also something that makes Nintendo’s subscription-based access to its classic games library all the more galling to me, and in Nintendo’s new EULA update, it now explicitly warns that it may discontinue its online services. In the face of such unreliability, user modification of a device to ensure it remains fully functional is a perfectly reasonable solution. Going beyond legitimate hardware modifications, I’m a firm believer that piracy is as much a question of service and convenience as finance, and Nintendo’s moves to consolidate its own control of products people legitimately purchase are inconvenient, annoying impositions that will annoy fans and drive away customers. Best of the best The Dark Urge, from Baldur’s Gate 3, looks towards his accursed claws with self-disdain. 2025 games: Upcoming releasesBest PC games: All-time favoritesFree PC games: Freebie festBest FPS games: Finest gunplayBest RPGs: Grand adventuresBest co-op games: Better together Amid an ongoing campaign against emulation, Nintendo continues to throw its muscle around, emboldened by the generation-defining sales success of the original Switch, but also clearly threatened by the rise of PC handhelds, emulators which run its own games better than the original hardware, and rumblings of future Xbox and PlayStation portables. I feel vindicated in my assessment that the Switch 2 is all stick and no carrot: Lacking truly exciting industrial design innovations (except the Joy **** mouse, which I actually quite like) or tech/hardware improvements to set the console apart from a more crowded handheld market, the Switch 2 can only rely on name recognition, customer inertia, and console-exclusive games to move units, much like its living room-bound rival, the PlayStation 5. All three console manufacturers have well and truly left behind the plug-and-play “it just works” convenience that used to set them apart from PCs. Credit: Nintendo And there’s even more in the EULA that’s worth flagging, as pointed out by Game File. A change in the wording of the EULA for minors that places responsibility on their legal guardians seems designed to further head off embarrassing lawsuits like the infamous Joy **** drift ones, ensuring such cases are forced into arbitration. Nintendo also joins in an unfortunate trend we can’t even escape on PC: Explicitly spelling out that we do not own our games, and instead only “license” them. That last embarrassment aside, these odious impositions are a big part of why I’m largely a desktop and Steam Deck-exclusive gamer at this point. I want to understand, modify, and be able to use the hardware I purchase for as long as I see fit, not be beholden to the proprietary services of a notoriously consumer-unfriendly company. Sure, Microsoft keeps trying to push a new version of Clippy that lies and screenshots your credit card information, but Linux gaming only keeps getting better thanks to SteamOS—if things get bad enough in the house that Bill built, I’ll make the move. I still love the original Nintendo Switch, but everything I’ve learned about its follow-up makes me think the 2017 hybrid console was lightning in a bottle. Rival weight loss drugs go head-to-head with clear winner
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Rival weight loss drugs go head-to-head with clear winner Rival weight loss drugs go head-to-head with clear winner Getty Images The first head-to-head trial of two blockbuster weight-loss drugs has shown Mounjaro is more effective than rival Wegovy. Both drugs led to substantial weight loss, but Mounjaro’s 20% weight reduction, after 72 weeks of treatment, exceeded the 14% from Wegovy, according to the trial’s findings. Researchers who led the trial said both drugs had a role, but Mounjaro may help those with the most weight to lose. Both drugs trick the brain into making you feel full so you eat less and instead burn **** stored in the body – but subtle differences in how they work to explain the difference in effectiveness. Wegovy, also known as semaglutide, mimics a hormone released by the body after a meal to flip one appetite switch in the brain. Mounjaro, or tirzepatide, flips two. The trial, which was paid for by Eli Lilly, the manufacturer of Mounjaro, involved 750 obese people, with an average weight of 113kg (nearly 18 stone). They were asked to take the highest dose they could tolerate of one of the two drugs. The findings, presented at the European Congress on Obesity in Malaga and in the New England Journal of Medicine, showed: 32% of people lost a quarter of their body weight on Mounjaro compared to 16% on WegovyThose on Mounjaro lost an average of 18cm from their waistlines compared with 13cm on Wegovy. Those on Mounjaro had better blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Both had similar levels of side-effects.Women tended to lose more weight than men. Dr Louis Aronne, who conducted the trial at the Comprehensive Weight Control Center at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York, said: “The majority of people with obesity will do just fine with semaglatide (Wegovy), those at the higher end may ultimately do better with tirzepatide (Mounjaro).” Private tirzepatide sales ‘well ahead of semaglutide’ In the ***, the two medicines are available from specialist weight-management services, but can also be bought privately. Prof Naveed Sattar, from the University of Glasgow, said the drugs were “good options” for patients, but while “many will be satisfied with 15% weight loss… many want as much weight loss as possible”. “In the ***, tirzepatide sales privately are now well ahead of semaglutide – that’s just a reality – and this paper will accelerate that I imagine,” he added. However, Wegovy is also licensed for other conditions – such as preventing heart attacks – while the equivalent trials with Mounjaro have not been completed. A huge amount of research into weight-loss drugs is still taking place. Higher doses of current drugs are being tested, as are new ways of taking them such as oral pills and new medicines that act on the body in different ways are being investigated. It means the final winner in this field has yet to be determined. Prof Sattar says the amount of research taking place means we may be approaching the point where “obesity prevention may also be possible soon”, but argues “it would be far better” to make our society healthier to prevent people becoming obese.
