Rare condition in Brazil town popular for cousin marriage
Rare condition in Brazil town popular for cousin marriage

BBC Brasil reporters sent to Serrinha dos Pintos
Mariana Castiñeiras/Caroline Souza
Affected families in Serrinha dos Pintos lived without a diagnosis until geneticist Silvana Santos arrived
Before Silvana Santos arrived in the little town of Serrinha dos Pintos more than 20 years ago, residents had no idea why so many local children had lost the ability to walk.
The remote town in north-eastern Brazil is home to fewer than 5,000 people, and is where biologist and geneticist Santos identified and named a previously unknown condition: Spoan syndrome.
Caused by a genetic mutation, the syndrome affects the nervous system, gradually weakening the body. It only appears when the altered gene is inherited from both parents.
Santos’s research marked the first time the disease had been described anywhere in the world. For this and later work, she was named one of the BBC’s 100 most influential women in 2024.
Before Santos arrived, families had no explanation for the illness affecting their children. Today, residents talk confidently about Spoan and genetics.
“She gave us a diagnosis we never had. After the research, help came: people, funding, wheelchairs,” says Marquinhos, one of the patients.
Serrinha dos Pintos: a world of its own
Where Santos is from in São Paulo, Brazil’s largest and wealthiest city, many of her neighbours were members of the same extended family originally from Serrinha. Many of them were cousins of varying degrees, married to each other.
They told Santos that many of people in their hometown couldn’t walk, but that no one knew why.
One of the neighbours’ daughters, Zirlândia, suffered from a debilitating condition: as a child, her eyes moved involuntarily and over time, she lost strength in her limbs and needed to use a wheelchair, requiring help with even the simplest tasks.
Years of investigation would lead Santos and a research team to identify these as symptoms of Spoan syndrome.
They would go on to find 82 other cases worldwide.
Mariana Castiñeiras/BBC
The entrance of Serrinha dos Pintos, where research suggests nearly a third of couples are related
At the invitation of her neighbours, Santos visited Serrinha on holiday. She describes her arrival as stepping into “a world of its own” – not just because of the lush scenery and mountain views, but also due to what seemed to be a notable social coincidence.
The more she walked and spoke with locals, the more surprised she was at how common marriages between cousins were.
Serrinha’s geographical isolation and little inward migration mean that many of the population are related, making marriage between cousins far more likely and more socially acceptable.
Worldwide, marriages between relatives were estimated at around 10% in the early 2010s. More recent data shows the rate varies widely, from over 50% in countries like Pakistan, to 1-4% in Brazil and less than 1% in the US and Russia. Most children born to pairs of cousins are healthy, experts say.
But these marriages do face a higher risk of a harmful genetic mutation being passed down through the family.
“If a couple is unrelated, the chance of having a child with a rare genetic disorder or disability is about 2–3%. For cousins, the risk rises to 5–6% per pregnancy,” explains geneticist Luzivan Costa Reis from Brazil’s Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul.
A 2010 study led by Santos showed that more than 30% of couples in Serrinha were related, and a third of them had at least one child with a disability.
Long road to diagnosis
Santos set out to find a diagnosis for the people of Serrinha and she began planning a detailed genetic study, requiring multiple trips and eventually leading to her relocating to the region.
She drove the 2,000km to and from São Paulo many times in the early years of her research. She collected DNA samples door-to-door, chatting to locals over coffee and gathering family stories, all the while trying to locate the mutation causing the disease.
What was supposed to be three months of fieldwork turned into years of dedication.
It all led to the publication in 2005 of the team’s study revealing the existence of Spoan in the Brazilian hinterland.
Santos’s team found that the mutation involves the loss of a small fragment of a chromosome, which causes a gene to overproduce a key protein in brain cells.
“They said it came from Maximiano, a womaniser in our family,” recalls farmer Lolô, whose daughter Rejane has Spoan.
Lolô, now 83, married his cousin and never left Serrinha. He still tends cattle and relies on family to care for Rejane, who struggles with daily tasks.
But the genetic mutation behind Spoan is far older than the legend of Old Maximiano: it likely arrived more than 500 years ago with early European settlers in the north-east of Brazil.
“Sequencing studies show strong European ancestry in patients, supporting records of Portuguese, Dutch, and Sephardic Jewish presence in the region,” says Santos.
The theory gained strength after two Spoan cases were found in Egypt, and further studies showed that the Egyptian cases also shared European ancestry, pointing to a common origin in the Iberian Peninsula.
“It likely came with related Sephardic Jews or Moors fleeing the Inquisition,” says Santos. She believes more cases may exist globally, especially in Portugal.
Mariana Castiñeiras/BBC
Silvana Santos no longer lives in the area, but she continues to visit
Understanding the risks
Although there’s been little progress toward a cure, tracking patients has brought some change. Rejane recalls how people used to be called “cripples”. Now, they’re simply said to have Spoan.
Wheelchairs brought not just independence, but also helped prevent deformities – in the past, many with the condition had been left simply lying in bed or on the floor.
As Spoan progresses, physical limitations worsen with age and by 50, nearly all patients become fully dependent on carers.
This is the case for Inés’s children, who are among the oldest in Serrinha. Chiquinho, 59, can no longer speak, and Marquinhos, 46, has limited communication abilities.
“It’s hard to have a ‘special’ child. We love them the same, but we suffer for them,” says Inés, who is married to a second cousin.
Mariana Castiñeiras/BBC
Inês has two sons affected by Spoan Syndrome
Larissa Queiroz, 25, the niece of Chiquinho and Marquinho, also married a distant relative. She and her husband, Saulo, only discovered their common ancestor after several months of dating.
“In Serrinha dos Pintos, deep down, we’re all cousins. We’re related to everyone,” she says.
Couples like Larissa and Saulo are the focus of a new research project which Santos is also involved in. Backed by Brazil’s Ministry of Health, it will screen 5,000 couples for genes linked to serious recessive diseases.
Mariana Castiñeiras/BBC
Thanks to research in occupational therapy, Paula and several other patients have already received motorised wheelchairs
The goal is not to stop cousin marriages, but to help couples understand their genetic risks, says Santos. Now a university professor, she also leads a genetics education centre and works to expand testing in the north-east of Brazil.
Though she no longer lives in Serrinha dos Pintos, every visit feels like coming home.
“It’s as if Santos is family,” says Inés.

Kevin Flatley had more than 26 years of service with An Garda Síochána
A garda (Irish police) officer has died whilst carrying out a speed checkpoint in County Dublin.
Kevin Flatley, 49, died at the scene after he was hit by a motorcyclist in Lanestown, in the north of the county, shortly before 13:00 local time on Sunday.
A motorcyclist, a man in his 30s, was seriously injured in the incident and has been taken to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where his condition is described as critical.
Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said he was deeply saddened by the death of his colleague and extended his sympathies to Mr Flatley’s family and friends.

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris said he was deeply saddened by the death of his colleague
“Kevin has over 26 years of dedicated service to An Garda Síochána and the people of Ireland,” he said.
He also revealed that Garda Flatley was the “90th member of An Garda Síochána killed in the performance of duty”.
“His death is a terrible reminder of the dangers faced by gardaí,” he added.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday evening, Mr Harris said it was a “terrible loss for us all”.
“Kevin has been a very faithful public servant,” Mr Harris said.
He added that he was very well-known and well-liked throughout the organisation.

Micheál Martin extended his “deepest sympathies” to Garda Flatley’s family, friends and to the “entire membership of An Garda Síochána”
The Taoiseach (Irish prime minister) said he was “very shocked and deeply saddened” to hear of Garda Flatley’s death.
Speaking in Cork to RTÉ News, Micheál Martin said he wanted to extend his “deepest sympathies to his family, to his friends and to the entire membership of An Garda Síochána”.
He added that “gardaí work bravely on our behalf to keep us safe every day” and it was “truly shocking” that this has occurred.
Irish President Michael D Higgins said Garda Flatley had “dedicated his career to public service and to keeping people safe”.
“The loss of a garda has a deep impact on society due to this strong connection and my thoughts are with his family and all those who knew and cared for Garda Flatley across his life,” he added.
‘A dark day for An Garda Síochána’
General Secretary of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) Ronan Clogher described the news as “devastating” and called it a “dark day” for An Garda Síochána.
“We are in shock and numbed at the news this afternoon. No Garda shift is ever routine, but this one has ended in the most horrendous of circumstances.”
The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Chief Constable Jon Boutcher said: “The loss of an officer is felt across the entire policing family and our thoughts are with his family, friends and An Garda Síochána colleagues at this difficult time.
“Kevin’s death is a stark reminder of the risks that police officers face every day as they work to protect the public and keep people safe.”

Man Says His Roommate ‘Stole’ His Cake, Then Demanded He Pay His Hospital Bill After Having an Allergic Reaction
Man Says His Roommate ‘Stole’ His Cake, Then Demanded He Pay His Hospital Bill After Having an Allergic Reaction
A 24-year-old man says his roommate had an allergic reaction after eating cake that didn’t belong to him from a fridge in their apartment
The man, who shared his experience on Reddit, says the roommate is now insisting that the Redditor cover his medical expenses
The Redditor says he is refusing to pay for the roommate’s medical bills, adding, “he stole my cake without even telling me”
A man says his roommate stole his cake and then had an allergic reaction to it — and is now demanding that the man pay his medical bills.
The 24-year-old detailed his experience on the popular Reddit forum “Am I the A——?” a place where people can go to seek advice about interpersonal dilemmas. In his post, the man says that he and his 26-year-old roommate — who he says were “friends before living with each other” — share a two-bedroom apartment, and that they agreed they would not share groceries.
“We have separate mini fridges in our rooms so you [can’t] even eat or drink something that isn’t yours on accident,” the Redditor explains.

However, the man says that he recently came home and found his fridge empty and a “plate in the trash.” He says that his roommate — who it turns out is allergic to peanut butter — had gone into his fridge and helped himself to some cake.
The roommate’s face soon became “puffy and red as a tomato, so he called an ambulance,” the original poster (OP) continues.

While the roommate was ultimately fine, the OP says that “after he saw the cost of [the] ambulance and Epipen” he “asked me to pay for it all because apparently I ‘posioned him.’ “
The man says he told the roommate to “F off,” and reminded him that “he stole my cake without even telling me.”
The man says that the roommate told “all” of their mutual friends about the incident and says they are now telling him he should “at least help” with some of the costs.
“So, aita [am I the a——]?” the Redditor asks at the end of his post.
Post commenters were quick to assure the man that he should not feel obligated to help the roommate pay his own medical bills — and that he has every right to feel resentful of the demand.
“NTA [not the a——],” said one person. “This is no different than if he’d had an adverse reaction to your medication. It wasn’t meant for him. You didn’t give it to him or agree to him having any. This is 100% his fault and his problem.”
The same person added: “Not only do you not owe him a dime, you need to make it very clear that his medical bills are not an excuse to fall behind on rent or utilities because there is a 100% chance he’s going to say that he needs you to cover those if he has to pay his own medical bill. Plant your feet and don’t back down.”
The PEOPLE Puzzler crossword is here! How quickly can you solve it? Play now!
“NTA. Absolutely not,” agreed someone else. “He went into your fridge, took something that was not his, and ate it. This is a well-deserved, expensive lesson for him.”
“Technically, he’s a thief and owes you a cake,” said another person.

Partner of Convicted Theranos Founder Elizabeth Holmes Raises Millions for New Blood-Testing Company
Partner of Convicted Theranos Founder Elizabeth Holmes Raises Millions for New Blood-Testing Company
Billy Evans, the partner of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, is raising millions of dollars for a blood-testing company, the New York Times reported Saturday. Evans is said to be approaching investors about his new company Haemanthus, “a health-testing company that can make diagnoses from users’ blood, ****** and saliva.”
The company bears more than a passing resemblance to Theranos. Holmes claimed the company had the ability offer diagnoses by testing small amounts of blood. Haemanthus was incorporated in January 2024 and will likely run tests on pets before beginning human trials.
Holmes was charged with fraud after a Wall Street Journal investigation into Theranos uncovered lies about the capabilities of the company’s technology. She was convicted in January 2022 and later attempted to flee the United States to Mexico. Holmes was sentenced to more than 11 years in prison in November of the same year.
Haemanthus marketing material reviewed by the Times claims the company will use a laser to look at samples — blood, saliva, or ****** — “on a molecular level.” The technology would be used to diagnose illnesses and *******.
Evans and Holmes met while the latter was being investigated by federal authorities. He has not commented on Haemanthus.
Evans has raised several million dollars from family and friends, the Times also reported, and most of the 10-person team is from Luminar, a self-driving car company where Evans worked for two years. The marketing materials also indicate Evans believes the team needs “three years and $70 million” to develop a wearable device for humans.

US suspends ******** cattle, horse and bison imports over screwworm pest
US suspends ******** cattle, horse and bison imports over screwworm pest
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins on Sunday said she is suspending imports of live cattle, horses and bison through the southern U.S. border over the damaging pest New World screwworm, a measure that immediately drew opposition from Mexico.
“I am announcing the suspension of live cattle, horse, & bison imports through U.S. southern border ports of entry effective immediately,” Rollins said. “The last time this devastating pest invaded America, it took 30 years for our cattle industry to recover. This cannot happen again.”
Her ******** counterpart, Julio Berdegue, swiftly rebuked the action, but said he hoped the two countries could soon come to an agreement over the pest, known as NWS.
“We don’t agree with this measure,” he said in a post on social media, adding that it would be in place for 15 days.
The U.S. agriculture agency in a statement on Sunday said the suspension would be in effect on a “month-by-month basis.”
The U.S. and Mexico last month reached an agreement on the handling of the damaging pest, which can infest livestock and wildlife and carry maggots that burrow into the skin of living animals, causing serious and often fatal damage.
The U.S. agriculture agency in a statement said the efforts so far were not sufficient, and acknowledged “an economic impact” on both countries due to the suspension.
“There has been unacceptable northward advancement of NWS and additional action must be taken to slow the northern progression of this deadly parasitic fly,” USDA said.
It said the pest had been detected in Oaxaca and Veracruz, about 700 miles (1,127 km) from the U.S. border.

Memorial service marks 40 years since Bradford City fire
Memorial service marks 40 years since Bradford City fire
Relatives and friends of those who died or were injured in the Bradford City fire were among the crowd of people who attended a 40th anniversary memorial service.
The service took place at the Bradford City Fire Memorial sculpture in Centenary Square at 11:00 BST.
The City of Bradford Brass Band played You’ll Never Walk Alone, before the City Hall bell tolled 56 times to mark the number of people who died. A wreath was also laid on behalf of King Charles III.
Mayor of Bradford Beverley Mullaney said the service was set up to help people “come together to pay tribute”.
She added: “It is important to the city and district that we take time to remember those who were affected and those who continue to be affected by the tragic events on 11 May 1985.”
The service also included Canon Pastor Oliver Evans, who is the Bradford City AFC club chaplain, giving a welcome speech.
And Reverend Andy Bowerman, Dean of Bradford, also gave a short reflection.
The rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone was chosen because of the song’s association with the tragedy.
Within days of the disaster, a supergroup including Gerry Marsden, Rick Wakeman, the Who’s John Entwistle, Phill Lynott, Motorhead and the Nolans joined a number of TV and sports stars on a new version of the classic terrace anthem. It reached number one in the charts and proceeds were donated to the families of those affected by the fire.
After the memorial service finished, the City Hall opened for a short while for fans and visitors to view a memorial bell at the top of the civic staircase in the hall.
The bell, which came from the first fire engine to arrive on the scene on 11 May 1985, was donated to the city by the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Bradford City were playing Lincoln City in their last home match of the season when a fire ripped through the Valley Parade stadium with 11,000 fans watching.
Fifty four Bradford City supporters died, along with two travelling Lincoln supporters, as well as injuring more than 260.

Tomatoes Recalled For Potentially Deadly Salmonella Contamination In 11 States
While caprese salad season is just around the corner, you’ll want to double-check those tomatoes sitting in your fruit basket before slicing them up. Ray & Mascari Inc., an Indiana-based company, has issued a recall on its 4-count packs of Vine-Ripe Tomatoes due to salmonella found in its production facilities.
Gordon Food Service Stores sold the recalled tomatoes in numerous states, including New York, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Missouri, Wisconsin, and Mississippi.
The affected products are packaged in clamshell containers with the UPC #7 96553 20062 1 and a master case label with Lot # RM250424 15250B or Lot # RM250427 15250B
Salmonella is a potentially deadly infection that can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, fever, and in rare cases, endocarditis, arthritis, and arterial infections. According to the FDA, roughly 450 people die from acute salmonellosis each year in the United States. The organization urges anyone with symptoms resembling Salmonella to consult their healthcare provider.
If you discover you have any of the affected tomatoes in your possession, you should discard the product and avoid consuming it, per the recall.

At least 1 dead, 32 injured after tour bus ****** near Los Angeles, authorities say
At least one person was killed and 32 others were injured, including two critically, after a tour bus and a sport utility vehicle crashed on a Southern California freeway, authorities said.
The incident occurred just after 5 a.m. local time on May 11 on State Route 60 near Hacienda Heights, a suburban community about 22 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release. The fiery collision involved a tour bus and a Nissan SUV.
When California Highway Patrol officers and Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel arrived at the scene, authorities discovered the SUV “fully engulfed” in flames with the driver trapped inside. The fire did not spread to the bus.

The California Highway Patrol noted that alcohol and drugs did not appear to be a factor in the ******. The incident remains under investigation.
