China removes ban on Boeing deliveries after tariff war pause, Bloomberg News reports
China removes ban on Boeing deliveries after tariff war pause, Bloomberg News reports
(Reuters) -China has removed a ban on airlines taking delivery of Boeing planes after the United States and China agreed a temporary cut in steep tariffs, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the matter.
Officials in Beijing have started to tell domestic carriers and government agencies this week that deliveries of aircraft made in the U.S. can resume, Bloomberg said.
In April, at least three jets at Boeing’s delivery center in China were returned to the United States. Boeing said customers in China would not take delivery of new planes due to tariffs, and it was looking to resell potentially dozens of aircraft.
On Monday Washington and Beijing agreed to slash reciprocal tariffs between the world’s two biggest economies of over 100% during a 90-day negotiation ******* following weekend talks in Geneva.
Boeing declined to comment on the Bloomberg report. China’s Civil Aviation Administration did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
China represents about 10% of Boeing’s commercial backlog and is an important and growing aviation market.
Boeing executives said during the company’s first-quarter earnings call that the company had planned for 50 jets to go to ******** carriers this year, with 41 in production or pre-built.
While Boeing had said other airlines are interested in taking rejected ******** planes, the planemaker has hesitated to send the jets elsewhere despite being keen to bring down high inventory levels.
Seating, for one, was an obstacle since seats were chosen and purchased by the ******** airlines.
******** customers are expected to take 25 out of 30 remaining 737 MAX jets built before 2023 that have not yet been delivered, Boeing said.
At least four 777 freighter planes are also in production for ******** carriers, according to a source familiar with the matter and aircraft tracking database Aviation Flights Group.
Beijing two weeks ago said ******** airlines and Boeing had been severely affected by U.S.-imposed tariffs.
China had already granted exemptions from the high tariffs to some aerospace equipment parts, including engines and landing gear, before Monday’s agreement.

Manchester United: Players given ticket limits for Europa League final
Manchester United: Players given ticket limits for Europa League final
The decisions come after a series of cost-cutting measures at the club which have included redundancies and the removal of free lunches for staff.
In addition, it has been established if United win, their intention is to celebrate by holding a barbeque at the club’s Carrington training ground.
Tottenham are yet to announce their plans in the event of victory but it is expected they will have a parade to show off the trophy.
Newcastle held a parade in the city in March to mark their Carabao Cup triumph, while Liverpool are due to host one on 26 May following their Premier League title success.
United have not held a trophy parade since 2013, which coincided with Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. Players were famously irritated in 2008 to discover there was no such celebration to mark their Champions League triumph over Chelsea.
Hosting one this season would have been logistically tricky.
Unlike their last Europa League success, against Ajax in Stockholm in 2017 during Jose Mourinho’s time in charge, United will still have a Premier League game to play after the match in Bilbao – when Aston Villa visit Old Trafford on 25 May.
Immediately after that game, United fly to Asia for two post-season matches against local opposition in Malaysia and Hong Kong.
They return to Manchester on 31 May, after which players have to immediately report for international duty.
Portugal have a Nations League semi-final with Germany on 4 June, which would involve Bruno Fernandes and, if fit, Diogo Dalot.
World Cup qualifiers also take place in South America on 5 June and in Europe from 6 June.

Factbox-Key promises by South Korea’s conservative presidential candidate Kim Moon-soo
Factbox-Key promises by South Korea’s conservative presidential candidate Kim Moon-soo
SEOUL (Reuters) – Seeking to build momentum in his campaign to win South Korea’s presidency, former labour minister and conservative candidate Kim Moon-soo is pledging economic policies focused on deregulation, investments in AI and tax breaks for the middle class.
Kim has also promised a tough line on nuclear-armed North Korea.
Here are some of Kim’s key campaign pledges ahead of the June 3 election:
DEALING WITH TRUMP
Kim has proposed an immediate summit meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump to negotiate tariffs.
NORTH KOREA
Kim is critical of engagement with North Korea, and has backed the hardline approach of impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol.
He has proposed stronger defence against Pyongyang’s nuclear threats and has promised he will secure “pre-emptive deterrence” by securing “enough retaliatory tools” such as ballistic missiles.
He would also seek stronger security guarantees from Washington such as the re-deployment of U.S. tactical nuclear weapons, and seek to secure the right to reprocess nuclear fuel, a major step towards building the country’s own atomic weapons.
ECONOMY
The candidate has vowed to create a business-friendly environment by easing regulations and expanding incentives for companies investing in South Korea.
Like his rival and liberal frontrunner Lee Jae-myung, he has pledged to help the country grow as a powerhouse for the artificial intelligence (AI) industry, promising to create a private-public joint fund worth 100 trillion won ($71.21 billion) to support infrastructure for the sector.
He also plans to slash taxes for the middle class and help them build assets by allowing a fair, transparent cryptocurrency market and crypto-linked funds.
Like Lee, Kim has proposed overhauling the inheritance tax system, including by lowering rates and removing inheritance tax between spouses.
SECURITY
He has proposed revising South Korea’s anti-espionage act beyond the disclosure of military secrets to broader areas such as academia.
ENERGY
Kim plans to expand nuclear power generation to reduce electricity prices for corporations and meet demand for the AI sector.
DEMOGRAPHICS
He has proposed increasing housing support for younger generations and newlyweds, and including ****** and egg freezing in public health insurance coverage to boost the country’s record low birthrate.

Is the U.S.-China trade agreement a ‘Trump put’?
Is the U.S.-China trade agreement a ‘Trump put’?
U.S. President Donald Trump meets with China’s President Xi Jinping at the G20 leaders summit in Japan, June 29, 2019.
Kevin Lamarque | Reuters
Over the weekend, both the U.S. and China agreed to slash tariffs on each other for 90 days from 125% to 10%. That’s much more than expected, as Trump on Friday has said that an 80% tariff on China “seems right!” The U.S. is still keeping its 20% fentanyl-related levy on China, so the total duty on Beijing adds up to 30%.
While high, 30% is a far cry from 145%. Investors were ecstatic, and sent stocks soaring. Technology names such as Nvidia and Broadcom, as well as consumer discretionary stocks including Nike and Starbucks, rallied. The market frenzy brought to mind the “Trump put,” the notion a falling market will prompt measures from the president that prop it up.
That said, as Dario Perkins, managing director of global macro strategy at TS Lombard pointed out, it is “(sort of) of funny that the optimistic case for Trump 2.0 is basically that it will reverse most of what it has done so far.”
A Trump put, perhaps, is just the president putting things back where they once were.
What you need to know today
China and U.S. suspend most tariffsThe U.S. and China on Monday agreed to an initial trade deal that suspends most tariffs on imports for 90 days. “Reciprocal” tariffs between both countries will be cut from 125% to 10%, but the U.S.′ 20% duties on ******** imports relating to fentanyl will remain, meaning total tariffs on China stand at 30%. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told CNBC on Monday that the deal represents progress in the country’s “decoupling” from China for “strategic necessities.”
A win for China, according to BeijingReferring to the U.S.-China trade deal, U.S. President Donald Trump said Beijing “agreed to open up,” but offered few other details. However, ******** officials, influencers and state-run media on Monday were casting the trade agreement with U.S. as a victory and vindication of Beijing’s negotiating strategy, “China’s firm countermeasures and resolute stance have been highly effective,” said a social media account linked to China’s national broadcaster CCTV.
Deal boosts China’s prospectsNow that the U.S. and China have struck an agreement over tariffs, major global banks are growing optimistic on Beijing’s economy and market in 2025. In a late Monday note, UBS hiked its forecast for China’s economic growth to between 3.7% and 4% from 3.4%, while Nomura raised China equities to “tactical Overweight” and rotated some funds out of its position in India to China, the Japanese said in a note following the trade talks.
Investors cheered trade dealNews of the two superpowers’ trade deal turbocharged U.S. stocks on Monday. The S&P 500 shot up 3.26%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 2.81% and the Nasdaq Composite surged 4.35%. U.S. Treasury yields and oil prices jumped during U.S hours as the chance of a recession appeared to diminish. However, Asia-Pacific markets were mixed Tuesday. Even though Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose more than 1.7%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index fell nearly 1.5%.
Technology shares rallied stronglyMembers of the so-called Magnificent 7 group added an aggregate $837.5 billion in market value on Monday, the largest collective move for the group since April 9. Outside this bag of stocks and their technology peers, consumer discretionary stocks also rallied. The U.S.-China agreement resurrected the idea of the “Trump put,” in which the president will take action to prevent markets from falling too drastically.
[PRO] S&P shoots past key levelWith the S&P’s rally on Monday, the broad-based index has broken through a key technical level. The speed of the movement, however, is not typical, and suggests that investors were caught off guard by trade developments — and might continue to be for the next market milestone.

Fintechs that raked in profits from high interest rates now face a key test
Financial technology firms were initially the biggest losers of interest rate hikes by global central banks in 2022, which led to tumbling valuations.
But with time, that change in the interest rate environment steadily boosted profits for fintechs. This is because higher rates boost what’s called net interest income — or the difference between the rates charged for loans and the interest paid out to savers.
Now, fintechs — especially digital banks — face a key test as a broad decline in interest rates raises doubts about the sustainability of relying on this heightened income over the long term.

India continues to focus on its growth despite the flare up in tensions with Pakistan, said Shilpak Ambule, the country’s high commissioner to Singapore.
Speaking to CNBC’s “Inside India,” Ambule said “everybody is on operational alert. But that does not mean that our India growth story and focus on economy gets affected.” Airports have resumed operations, and it is safe to travel in India, he added.
Ambule said that the country had just concluded a trade deal with the ***, and that negotiations on trade deals with the U.S and the European Union were at an advanced stage.
With the U.S “it’s very difficult to give a timeline” to the trade talks, but officials on both sides have been meeting regularly, he added. “The terms of reference have been agreed to and have been signed, and negotiations are actively continuing.”
Investors have been sticking with the India story, with optimism on its growth prospects dwarfing geopolitical fears.
“Structural reforms, resilient domestic demand, and strong macro fundamentals continue to offer a compelling case,” Mohit Mirpuri, an equity fund manager at SGMC Capital, told CNBC last week.
Ambule’s comments come after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech late Monday on “Operation Sindoor,” that saw New Delhi conducting military strikes against Pakistan last week. Islamabad retaliated with missiles and drones.
The countries agreed to a ceasefire on Saturday. When asked if the ceasefire will hold, Ambule told CNBC that “the ball is in Pakistan’s court.”
Modi in his speech said that the operation now defined India’s new counter-terrorism policy, adding that the country would not differentiate between “a government that harbors terror and the terrorists themselves,” accusing Pakistan of harboring terrorists.
“If Pakistan wants to survive, it must dismantle its terror infrastructure. There is no other path to peace.” Modi said.
On May 9, India conducted strikes against Pakistan and what it calls Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, targeting “terrorist infrastructure.” This was in response to a terrorist attack by militants in the tourist town of Pahalgam in Kashmir province, which killed 25 Indian nationals and a Nepalese citizen, the Indian government said.

Man arrested after fires at homes linked to prime minister
Man arrested after fires at homes linked to prime minister
PA Media
The Metropolitan Police have arrested a man on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life after fires at homes linked to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
Police arrested the 21-year-old in the early hours of Tuesday. He remains in custody.
The arrest followed a fire at the prime minister’s private home in Kentish Town, north London, in the early hours of Monday.
On Sunday, emergency services were called to a small fire at the front door of a house converted into flats in nearby Islington, a property also linked to Sir Keir.
Police are also looking at a car fire as part of the investigation.
No one was injured in the fires. The prime minister’s official residence is in Downing Street.
Counter-terrorism police took over the investigation. Police are treating the fires as suspicious and investigating whether they are linked.
The first fire under investigation happened just before 03:00 BST on Thursday, when firefighters were called to a small car fire on the same street as the prime minister’s Kentish Town home.
The second occurred just after 03:00 on Sunday at the Islington property. One person was assisted to safety via an internal staircase by crews wearing breathing apparatus, London Fire Brigade said.
The third took place at the Kentish Town property. London Fire Brigade (LFB) said it had been called to a “small fire” at 01:11 on Monday that was under control about 20 minutes later.
There was damage to the property’s entrance but nobody was hurt, the Metropolitan Police said.

Aussie mum sparks national debate after revealing she travelled to the US to seek IVF and choose the gender of her fourth child
Aussie mum sparks national debate after revealing she travelled to the US to seek IVF and choose the gender of her fourth child
An *********** mother has sparked a national debate after she travelled to the US for fertility treatment to choose the gender of her fourth child.
Influencer Caitlin Bailey told the Herald Sun that she spent $45,000 to attend a fertility clinic in Los Angelos to conceive a baby girl.
The mother of two boys and one girl aged between one and five always wanted two of each sex, so she contacted Gender Selection Australia (GSA) about conceiving another girl as a single parent.
The clinic puts *********** families in touch with Californian-based fertility doctor Daniel Potter, who specialises in gender selection to balance families as well as genetic disease screening.
Camera IconAussie influencer Caitlin Bailey travelled to the US for IVF treatment to select the gender of her fourth child as a single parent. Instagram Credit: Supplied
Gender selection to balance families is generally banned in Australia, so hundreds of *********** families travel overseas to choose the gender of their baby via IVF, according to GSA’s website.
The practice is only permitted in Australia to reduce the risk of transmitting serious genetic conditions, diseases or abnormalities from future generations.
Connect IVF scientific director Lauren Hiser said while it was possible to know the sex of an embryo prior to it being transferred to a woman’s uterus, sex could only be selected in Australia when a genetic component was involved in IVF.
Gender selection through IVF was available in NSW between 1999 and 2004, which Ms Hiser said was used mostly for family balancing reasons so people could select the sex they were desiring before pregnancy.
“Whenever people hear about sex selection, they are always very concerned that people are selecting boys over girls, that’s the first thing that comes to people’s mind,” she said.
“If you look into the data when it was available in NSW, between 1999 and 2004 the ratios did not change.
“In the patients that were able to select based solely on sex, they were actually choosing more girls and doing it for family balancing reasons.
“But sex selection is happening in Australia, it’s just not happening within the IVF realm.”
Camera IconMs Bailey has two boys and one girl but always wanted two of each sex. Instagram Credit: Supplied
A La Trobe University study found that *********** families were terminating pregnancies following non-invasive prenatal testing to find out the sex of their child.
Researchers found a cultural preference for sons among some ethnic groups led to more boys than girls being born in Victoria.
The naturally occurring ratio worldwide was 105 boys born to every 100 girls; however, the study showed there were 108 and 109 boys born respectively to Indian and ********-born mothers for every 100 girls born between 1999-2015 in Victoria.
La Trobe Judith Lumley Centre lead researcher Kristina Edvardsson believed some women may be terminating pregnancies after discovering they were expecting a girl and, in other cases, travelled overseas to access non-medical sex selection services through assisted reproduction.
“We know even ***********-born women and men can choose to go overseas and select the sex of their baby, but what we can see from the sex ratios in the ***********-born group is that it’s not skewed to any gender,” she said.
Camera IconA national debate has erupted around gender selection through IVF. NewsWire / Nikki Short Credit: News Corp Australia
Ms Hiser said gender selection and whether it should be introduced to minimise harm was an ethical discussion.
“If there are people already getting pregnant, then testing a pregnancy and choosing to terminate, well, could we as an industry stop that from happening?” she said.
“Could we select an embryo before it becomes a pregnancy so people do not have to go through medical terminations or anything more drastic?”
Ms Hiser said other international jurisdictions introduced gender selection as a way of reducing infanticide, backyard abortions and other things that could cause harm.
“We have a group of people in Australia that are looking for the services and are willing to travel internationally to achieve that,” she said.
“We have great IVF service in Australia that can do all that, but we are sending our patients overseas to jurisdictions that may not be as well set up, that have higher risks associated and certainly higher costs.
“There’s a lot of ethical considerations to be had if we should be selecting for sex or not.”
Ms Hiser said reproductive technology laws in Australia sent a lot of citizens overseas to seek treatment.
“People looking for surrogacy, it’s not easy to do in Australia so they go overseas, certainly for sex selection and some donor situations as well,” she said.
“Because our laws don’t support it, it’s easier for people to access that outside of Australia.”
Ms Bailey and GSA have been contacted for comment.

India considers counter duties on US products, notice to WTO shows
India considers counter duties on US products, notice to WTO shows
NEW DELHI (Reuters) – India is looking at levying import duties on some products made in the United States to counter Washington’s tariffs on steel and aluminium products, a document submitted to the World Trade Organization shows.
“The proposed suspension of concessions or other obligations takes the form of an increase in tariffs on selected products originating in the United States,” the document dated May 12 said.
It did not say what kind of products might be subjected to tariffs.
In March, the U.S. imposed 25% levies on steel and aluminium imports – an extension of tariffs first imposed in 2018 during U.S. President Donald Trump’s first term.
India, the world’s second-largest producer of crude steel, said in its document to the WTO that the measures would affect $7.6 billion worth of India-made products imported into the United States.
In addition to the duties on steel and aluminium, Trump’s administration has threatened reciprocal tariffs of 26% on Indian goods. The two countries are trying to clinch a trade deal, with New Delhi offering to slash its tariff gap with the U.S. by two-thirds.
India has some of the world’s highest tariffs on imports, and Trump has previously called India a “tariff abuser”.
India has also levied tariffs of its own on steel. Last month, it imposed 12% temporary tariffs to curb imports of cheap steel, primarily from China.
In addition to its attempts to stem supply domestically, New Delhi is also trying to secure greater access for Indian steel exports through trade talks with partner countries.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 Cover Screen Upgrade Hinted via One UI 8 Leaked Firmware
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 Cover Screen Upgrade Hinted via One UI 8 Leaked Firmware
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 is expected to land in July alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7. While there’s no confirmed launch date for the phone yet, there have been leaks from multiple sources detailing the specifications of the upcoming clamshell foldable. The Galaxy Z Flip 7 is poised to introduce a significant design enhancement. It is said to come with a more expansive, edge-to-edge cover display that envelops the upper half of the device. Now, a leaked One UI 8 firmware has suggested a ******* cover display for the phone. This redesign is expected to bring a 4-inch cover screen, up from the 3.4-inch screen on the Galaxy Z Flip 6.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 Might Feature ******* Cover Display
Folks at Android Authority spotted evidence about Galaxy Z Flip 7’s larger cover display via animation files found in a leaked One UI 8 firmware. The Animation files reportedly show the Galaxy Z Flip 5, Galaxy Z Flip 6, and the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 7. While the visuals for the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 match their current designs, the Galaxy Z Flip 7’s animation suggests a noticeably larger cover display, corroborating recent leaks that hinted at a significant design update.
Animation files within leaked firmware reportedly showcase the Galaxy Z Flip 5, Galaxy Z Flip 6, and Galaxy Z Flip 7. Photo Credit: Android Authority
The latest leak is in line with design leaks from March. The alleged early renders showed that Samsung will ditch the folder-type design for the outer screen in the Galaxy Z Flip 7. Instead of the existing folder-type design, the new model appeared to have just cutouts for the dual cameras, resembling the Motorola Razr 50.
The upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 7 is rumoured to come with a 4-inch cover display and a 6.8-inch inner display. For comparison, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 has a 3.4-inch cover display and a 6.7-inch inner screen.
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 7 is anticipated to launch alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 7 in July. It is expected to use Samsung’s own Exynos 2500 chipset alongside 12GB of RAM. Nico O’Reilly: Man City player on breaking into first team and Pep Guardiola
Nico O’Reilly: Man City player on breaking into first team and Pep Guardiola
City – and O’Reilly – have grown accustomed to winning but the team have fallen short of the high standards they have set in recent seasons.
They have been deposed at the top of the Premier League by new champions Liverpool, relinquishing their four-year grip on the trophy, while being knocked out of the Champions League at the play-off stage.
Last Saturday’s shock goalless draw against rock-bottom Southampton leaves them in a fight to finish in the top five with two games remaining and, in turn, qualifying for the Champions League next season.
“I have found that the players have been positive for the majority of it,” said O’Reilly.
“These are players that have won everything and they are still trying to improve so we can get these wins. I think it has helped my mindset and how to approach things.
“We have had a tough season, however there are positives to take out of it. We are just going to try and finish as well as we can now.”
O’Reilly says boss Guardiola “drives the intensity” at the club and “gets us all going”, telling the players to “go out there and enjoy it”.
At one stage in the campaign, City went on a wretched run of one win in 13 games but boss Guardiola told BBC Sport the upturn in results since “would be difficult to imagine” without O’Reilly’s contributions.
Victory on Saturday can provide some satisfaction to an otherwise disappointing campaign.
His standout performances have come in the competition, scoring in the 8-0 thrashing of Salford in the third round, netting twice against Plymouth and turning the game around against Bournemouth by creating both goals after appearing as a half-time substitute.
Now for O’Reilly, getting his hands on a first major trophy in his maiden season as a professional awaits.
“Personally, it would mean a lot for me to get some silverware,” he says.
“Obviously coming through the youth stages, you have got the FA Youth Cup, which is – I’d say – the biggest tournament in youth football. Everyone wants to play in that.
“Then to transition through to the first team, you have got the FA Cup, where a lot of youth players do get chances.
“It is an amazing tournament and it would be amazing to win it.”

Two ‘beasts’ inspiring Dolphins powerhouse Finefeuiaki
Two ‘beasts’ inspiring Dolphins powerhouse Finefeuiaki
Dolphins forward Kulikefu Finefeuiaki has two beasts on his mind right now.
The first is Greg Inglis, whom he wants to emulate in the State of Origin arena for Queensland, and the other is 19-year-old wrecking ball Leka Halasima, whom he wants to overpower in Sunday’s clash with the Warriors at Suncorp Stadium.
The 21-year-old Dolphins second-rower was born in New Zealand but moved to Ipswich as an 11-year-old where he played junior footy for Redbank Plains and then Ipswich State High, where he was noticed.
Inglis was a shining light for the Maroons, mostly at centre, but Finefeuiaki was hooked on the Origin concept after watching the physicality of his play.
“Greg Inglis – I know it’s a bit out of my position – but watching him play for Queensland he was just another beast,” Finefeuiaki said.
“Just the aggression he carries when he runs the ball and defends, and the way he just puts his hand up for everything. I watch his highlights here and there, so it’s pretty cool and I want to try and do that.
“To be a Queenslander is pretty cool because my older brother goes for NSW, and when it comes to that time I don’t like him.”
The Maroons will name their side on Monday for the Origin series opener on May 28 and although Finefeuiaki is not expected to be named in game one, he is considered a future Queensland representative.
“Woolfy (coach Kristian Woolf) said a big part of my game is bringing that aggression, both sides of the ball,” Finefeuiaki said.
“I just want to do that for the boys and to play Origin would be a dream come true, but we’ll have to wait for that one.”
Finefeuiaki enjoys confrontation and one-on-one battles and is hoping to get one over the in-form Halasima on Sunday.
“Their young star Leka Halasima is flying at the moment. I think I’m going up against him on that edge, so I reckon it will be a good test for me and no doubt a good battle for us two young Tongan boys,” Finefeuiaki said.
“There will be a bit of backchat here and there, but it’s all part of the game. He’s probably going to have some little jokes here and there to try and make me laugh, but I don’t know if I’ll fall into that.”
Finefeuiaki was outstanding in the 20-16 win over Parramatta last week after being disappointed with his previous two displays.
“I probably missed a few kick chases, that’s my job for the team to try get down on those kick chases and make the first tackle and second tackles, but I recognise I just didn’t,” he said.
“I was pretty filthy with myself, but the boys had my back and told me to keep moving forward.
“To come away with the win (against Parramatta) was pretty good. The boys turned up and wanted to play, and especially getting a win down in Sydney – which is pretty tough to do – overall it was a good performance.”

Trump fumes at ‘ABC fake news’ reporter for pressing him on pricey Qatar plane gift: ‘You should be embarrassed!’
Trump fumes at ‘ABC fake news’ reporter for pressing him on pricey Qatar plane gift: ‘You should be embarrassed!’
Donald Trump lashed out at ABC News correspondent Rachel Scott on Monday for pressing him on the $400 million “palace in the sky” that he is poised to accept from the Qatari royal family.
Asked how he would respond to concerns from the American public that the luxury jet could be seen as a personal gift, the president called Scott “fake news” and said that she “should be embarrassed” before going on a golf-related tangent about accepting a “gimme” putt.
The president’s recent anger towards ABC News, whose parent company recently paid Trump $15 million to settle a defamation lawsuit over a George Stephanopoulos interview, likely stems from the network being the first to report on Qatar’s proposed gift to the administration – an offer that could run afoul of the emoluments clause.
During a White House press conference to announce his executive order aimed at cutting drug prices, Trump was repeatedly asked by Scott about the administration receiving a super luxury Boeing 747-8 jumbo jet from Qatari royals. The gift was initially expected to be announced this week when Trump visits Qatar during his first foreign trip of this administration.
The plane, which is expected to be used as the new Air Force One for much of the rest of Trump’s term, will then be given to the Trump presidential library near the end of the president’s time in office.
President Donald Trump raged at an ABC News correspondent for pressing him on the lavish gift he received from Qatar during Monday’s press conference. (AP)
“I think that was a very nice gesture. I could be a stupid person and say we don’t want a free plane. We give free things out. We’ll take one too. It helps us out,” Trump said when first asked how the American people could be sure that Qatar won’t ask for something in return for the gift.
As he was preparing to sign his executive order, Scott once again wondered about the possibility that the jumbo jet from Qatar could be seen as a bribe, prompting the president to seethe over the implication.
“You are ABC fake news, right?!” Trump exclaimed. “Let me tell you, you should be embarrassed asking that question. They are giving us a free jet. I could say no, don’t give us, I want to pay you a billion or $400 million or whatever it is. Or I can say thank you very much.” The president went on to reference golfing legend Sam Snead, saying that “he had a motto” about how golfers should just say thank you and “pick up your ball and walk to the next hole” whenever someone “gives you a putt.”
“A lot of people are stupid and say no, I insist on putting, and they miss it and their partner gets angry at them,” he added. “Remember that. Sam Snead, when they give you a putt, you walk to the next hole and say thank you very much.”
Undeterred by the president’s insults, Scott followed up by asking whether the president had received a gift worth millions of dollars and the giftor not asking for anything in return, causing Trump to insist that he’s not the personal recipient of the plane.
“It’s not a gift to me, but a gift to the Department of Defense,” he groused. “You should know better. You have been embarrassed enough. ABC is a disaster.”
Anticipating these questions of legality, especially since the emoluments clause prohibits explicitly any American government official from accepting gifts “from any King, Prince or foreign State,” the Justice Department and Trump’s top White House lawyer deemed it “legally permissible” as long as the donation of the aircraft is conditioned on ownership being transferred to the presidential library by the end of the term.
Of course, it wasn’t lost on critics that Attorney General Pam Bondi was once a foreign lobbyist for Qatar, earning $115,000 a month in the role that she held off-and-on starting in 2019.
Even some conservative news outlets have questioned whether Trump should be accepting the $400 million jet from Qatar. (AP)
It isn’t just the liberal or mainstream media that is hammering Trump over the perception that he’s accepting foreign bribes while attempting to profit from his office. The editors of The Free Press, the “anti-woke” centrist outlet, slammed the president for accepting the luxury jet from Qatar, adding that the GOP and right-wing media spent the past few years blasting the Biden family over the same concerns.
“The Hunter Biden affair really was a scandal. But these days, it seems like small potatoes,” they noted, adding: “The Qatari plane is not an exception but the rule for the second Trump administration so far. Both foreign friends and foes are now treating this as a pay-to-play presidency.”
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, meanwhile, attempted to reassure the hosts of Trump’s favorite morning talk show that there was nothing amiss with the lavish gift and nobody should be bothered by it.
“Do you worry that if they give us something like this, they want something in return?” Fox & Friends co-anchor Brian Kilmeade wondered.
“Absolutely not, because they know President Trump and they know he only works with the interests of the American public in mind,” Leavitt proclaimed.

There might be a hidden ocean’s worth of liquid water below the surface of Mars, seismic evidence suggests.
According to a new paper published April 25 in the journal National Science Review, recordings of seismic waves from deep within the Red Planet indicate that a layer of liquid water may be lurking in the Martian rocks between 3.4 and 5 miles [5.4 to 8 kilometers] below the surface.
The total volume of hidden water could flood the whole of Mars’ surface with an ocean 1,700 to 2,560 feet [520 to 780 metres] deep, around the same volume of liquid that is contained within Antarctica’s ice sheet, the study authors estimated.

Our neighboring planet was once abundant in water. In the time between Mars’ formation 4.1 billion years ago to about 3 billion years ago, the Red Planet is thought to have been extremely wet, with features like valley networks, delta formations, and layered sedimentary rocks suggesting sustained water flow.
However, this abundant liquid water “vanished as the planet transitioned to become the cold, dry environment we see today,” paper co-author Hrvoje Tkalčić, a professor of geophysics at the *********** National University, said in a statement.
Over time, Mars lost its magnetic field, and solar radiation began stripping away its atmosphere. With a thinner atmosphere, surface temperatures dropped; the planet’s liquid water began to escape into space, become trapped as ice in the subsurface or polar caps, or become locked in hydrated minerals within the planet’s crust, the researchers said.
However, these methods of water loss have previously been shown to not entirely account for all the water that is estimated to have once flowed on the Red Planet, with a large volume of “missing” water going unaccounted for. This conundrum has long puzzled scientists, posing the question of whether there is still liquid water hidden on Mars that we have yet to find.

This new research suggests that there is indeed liquid water buried deep below the surface of the planet. Upon analyzing seismic data from NASA’s InSight lander, which landed on Mars in 2018, researchers found that seismic waves within the planet’s interior — caused by asteroid impacts and marsquakes in 2021 and 2022 — appeared to slow down between 3.4 and 5 miles [5.4 to 8 kilometers] below the surface. They suggest that this could be due to the presence of liquid water hidden within porous rocks, as seismic waves travel more slowly through liquid than they do through more solid materials.
“This ‘low-velocity layer’ is most likely highly porous rock filled with liquid water, like a saturated sponge,” Tkalčić and another study co-author Weijia Sun, a professor of geophysics at the ******** Academy of Sciences, explained in an essay for the Conversation about the new study. “Something like Earth’s aquifers, where groundwater seeps into rock pores.”
The researchers suggest that this liquid water could make up the total volume of water missing from previous calculations.
“Our study indicates it’s possible that much of that ancient water percolated through the porous surface rocks and was retained underground,” Tkalčić said. “This also matches estimates of the ‘missing’ water on Mars from other studies.”

Previous studies have also found that large volumes of water may be stored beneath the Martian surface in ice form, and a study from 2024 suggested that liquid water could be stored within rocks between 7 to 13 miles (11.2 to 21 km) beneath the surface.
The potential presence of liquid water on Mars is exciting to scientists, as liquid water is essential to life as we know it. While these potential reservoirs deep below the planet’s surface could host some form of Martian life, we won’t know if the liquid water even exists until we can drill deep into Mars and find it for ourselves.
“Future missions with seismometers and drills are needed to confirm the presence of the water at these depths and gather more clues,” Tkalčić said.
