Smart new rider aids for BMW riders

BMW has announced a new Automated Shift Assistant system for its motorcycles.

The new technology is designed to make riding simpler and more comfortable, and works in a similar way to the automatic gearshift in a car.

There is no need to operate the clutch manually. In D shift mode the gears are changed automatically depending on the riding mode, engine revs, throttle position and lean angle parameters. The shift points are automatically selected by the engine control unit.

In M shift mode, gear changes can still be made by foot control, enabling the rider to decide when to change gears. In both M and D modes, the rider benefits from perfectly ********* gear changes with a smooth interruption of traction which results in efficient acceleration and increased riding stability. When shifting up, for example, the jolt associated with a classic manual transmission with a manual clutch is largely eliminated. Downshifts are also designed to be as smooth as possible, minimising chassis disturbances. Specific characteristics of the automated shift function are assigned to the different riding modes to ensure perfect shift behaviour in each riding situation.

The new ASA system will be rolled out on new models bound for Australia in 2025, with further details to be announced later this year.

Cool new glasses allow riders to focus fully on the road ahead.

BMW has also just released some very cool smart-glasses with a heads-up display that allows riders to focus on the road ahead. The HUD show relevant riding information such as current speed, speed limit, what gear you’re in and navigational information directly into the rider’s field of view.

The ConnectedRide Smartglasses stream data from the BMW ConnectedRide app to an optical projection module mounted above the right lens.

The glasses come in two sizes and have slim frames designed to fit into even the tightest of helmets and ability to add prescription lenses. The $1300 is a little eyewatering but they are available now at BMW Motorrad in Burswood.
