Train carrying hazardous materials derails in Springfield; Main road closed through Monday

A train carrying hazardous materials derailed in Springfield early Friday morning, an Indiana & Ohio Railway (IORY) spokesperson confirmed to News Center 7.

Springfield police responded around 1:24 a.m. to N Bechtle Avenue and Perry Street on reports of a train derailed.

A spokesperson for the railroad said 10 railcars, of a 45-car train, derailed.

Two of the derailed cars were carrying hazardous materials, but did not ***** and are intact.

As of noon, the two cars transporting hazardous materials are “completely upright,” the spokesperson said.

The Springfield ***** Department tested the two cars and confirmed there were no issues.

The IORY Vice President and Springfield Police said N Bechtle Avenue is expected to be closed until Monday.

There is no threat to the public. The train’s crew was not injured in this derailment.

Contractors were called to help the IORY team rerail the affected cars.

The line is expected to be fully restored by tomorrow, according to the railroad spokesperson.

An investigation into the cause of the derailment is underway.
