Chevron City to Surf for Activ to celebrate 50th year milestone in Karratha

One of WA’s longest-running community events is taking to the streets of Karratha to celebrate its 50th anniversary, with hundreds of participants expected to take part in the fundraiser.

The Chevron City to Surf for Activ will be taking place in Karratha on July 28 at Searipple Park, Bulgarra, to celebrate five decades of participants lacing up to run, walk or roll to raise vital funds.

The celebrations are set to be the biggest on record, with over 600 people expected to attend the event this year, a record for Karratha, who has been marking the event for over 10 years.

Initially starting in Perth, participants can choose either a four kilometre or 12km course to raise funds for the Activ Foundation, with all funds going directly into improving the lives of people living with disability.

Activ Foundation executive manager for marketing, fundraising and events Michael Van Oudtshoorn said the Karratha event is accessible for all with its flat course and has seen people complete with incredible times.

“When you have regional events, the opportunity to connect and drive connection within the community and get together for a great cause to support people with disability is so important,” he said.

“We see the same groups of people come back year after year and bring new friends along.

“It’s a really important way to actually get involved with not only the event but with the community itself.”

Mr Van Oudtshroorn said the Activ Foundation provides the appropriate training and support for both people who are supporting people with disabilities and people who live with a disability in Karratha.

“When people fundraise through the event, it really helps make a huge difference,” he said.

“It could help someone learn how to use utensils to feed themselves who didn’t have that ability to do that before.

“It can help provide better accommodation that’s suited to people’s disability needs or those living in unsuitable accommodation within the state.”
