[STEAM] Hands-On with Marvel’s Wolverine

Recently, I was invited by PlayStation Canada to check out Marvel’s Wolverine ahead of launch and here’s my thoughts on the game.

According to Insomniac, here’s what the game is about:

Logan is the quintessential reluctant hero – haunted by the consequences of unleashing the beast within. Once the claws come out, Wolverine doesn’t hold back: as a living weapon forged against his will, he’ll use razor-sharp adamantium to dispatch enemies and untamed berserker rage to build momentum on the battlefield. He’ll leave an impression on his foes with fast, fluid, and rapid attacks and techniques that’ll dismember or break anyone who gets in his way. Wolverine might be distant, but he isn’t afraid to get up close and personal when it counts.

During my hands-on with the game, I was able to play about an hour or so of the first chapter of the game, part of the gameplay was near the start of the chapter and some was near the end.

The first part of the game I played had me playing as Wolverine as he about to land at a facility in Telambang. After a quick cutscene, you’ll be in control of Wolverine as he takes on waves on enemies.

You’ll have a couple of abilities and moves at your disposal, the first is a leap attack, so can get the jump on enemies. The next is Barrage, which has Wolverine attacking an enemy using his claws.

And if you get too damaged in a fight, you can heal and get back up using the Last Stand ability. After using Last Stand, you’ll then fill up your Rage meter using kills and successful combat actions like combos.

There’s also some stealth combat like Stealth Takedown, so you can quietly take down enemies. But you can disregard that and just attack enemies as normal too.

As you fill up your meter, you’ll also have access to special abilities like an attack tornado that will do more damage to multiple enemies.

The combat will feel familiar to those that have played the Insomniac Spider-Man games as the gameplay and combat is a lot of button mashing.

While I only got to play a small portion of the game, there will other locations (including Vancouver, Canada) that the game’s story will take you to along with plenty of easter eggs.

Marvel’s Wolverine is launching on September 15th, exclusively on PS5. Look for a full review in the coming weeks.
