[STEAM] Why PUBG is backing up its UGC platform launch with a $95,000 creator contest

PUBG has a new user-generated content mode, and Krafton is offering tens of thousands of dollars in prizes to convince creators to try it out.

Krafton’s popular battle royale title PUBG: Battlegrounds has allowed creators to build and share custom-made experiences in-game since July 2025, when the game launched an

of its user-generated content (UGC) tools. Yesterday, August 3, Krafton announced the latest evolution of its UGC ecosystem — a platform named PUBG: Playgrounds — as well as a $95,000 global contest to entice creators to build inside the platform administered by the game modification platform CurseForge.

“Since Early Access, PUBG has always been shaped by our players, whose feedback and ideas have influenced its evolution,” said PUBG: Battlegrounds director Taehyun Kim in a press release. “With PUBG: Playgrounds, players will be able to take that creativity a step further by building their own modes and experiences directly.”

PUBG: Playgrounds is taking the place of the game’s previous UGC alpha system, according to CurseForge general manager (and co-founder and chief product officer of CurseForge parent company Overwolf) Alon Rabinovitz in an interview with GamesBeat, who described yesterday’s launch as “the next phase” of PUBG’s UGC strategy. The contest is CurseForge’s first official collaboration with PUBG, although the company has partnered with Krafton to support UGC development in InZOI for the past two years, per Rabinovitz.

for PUBG: Playgrounds included clips of UGC experiences designed by a select group of creators that received early access to the platform and its tools, with CurseForge leading the recruitment of these creators.

“They realized that, in order to actually jump-start this ecosystem, there was much more needed,” Rabinovitz said. “And one of CurseForge’s main strengths is the fact that we have a vast creator network of almost 180 creators across many forms of UGC.”

Intended to help build the first wave of creator-made content on PUBG: Playgrounds, Krafton’s global contest will run between August 12 and , with participating creators able to submit original experiences across three categories: Combat, Survival, and Creative. Thirty winners will be selected using a mixture of community votes and deliberations by panels of community leaders, per Rabinovitz, with each category offering a $25,000 prize pool including a $10,000 prize for each first-place winner. Additionally, ten creators will receive $500 mid-contest prizes and six “Community Favorites” will be awarded $2,500 prizes determined by a pure fan vote. Winning experiences will be officially released through PUBG: Platforms.

“The real prize is that winners will be featured in-game,” Rabinovitz said. “Having your creation featured in a game like PUBG — that’s a real career step up for many mod authors, and more often than not, this is the real incentive.”

PUBG is a popular game with a loyal and consistent audience — but Krafton is entering an increasingly saturated market as the company dips its toes into UGC with PUBG: Playgrounds. Platforms like Roblox and Fortnite soak up the lion’s share of attention and engagement in the UGC space. Getting more players to build and play inside PUBG: Playgrounds could require Krafton to foster significant change within the culture and audience of the prominent battle royale title.

“What we want to see is a good amount of high-quality creations being created — that’s number one,” Rabinovitz said. “Number two, we would want to see engagement with those in-game. So, this is something we will collaborate with PUBG to track.”
