[STEAM] After 12 years and heavy layoffs, new Elder Scrolls Online lead says the MMO is "here to stay" with extra help from Bethesda proper and "all-new experiences in Skyrim" on the way

filing confirming the studio lost more than 200 developers. Still, it insists its flagship title isn't going anywhere any time soon.

In a new community letter from Elder Scrolls Online's new game director, Nick Giacomini,

, Giacomini says there's still a bright future ahead for Elder Scrolls Online, thanks in part to "a new chapter of collaboration across Bethesda.

"By working more closely with Bethesda Game Studios across The Elder Scrolls, we have new opportunities to share ideas, align our efforts, and create even better experiences for players, all while continuing to build the future of ESO."

Giacomini couches his optimism with some less than great news. "With the recent changes to our studio, trying to hit our previously announced deadlines would mean sacrificing the quality you deserve," he says. "Therefore, we are establishing a clear principle for how we build and ship content and features moving forward: quality experiences over calendar dates."

You know what means: delays. Specifically, the new Crimson Veldt trial is being delayed to January 2027 alongside Update 52, which will also include the new Jerall Pass PvP zone and Skyrim's Dynamic Encounters: Rimegales. The long-anticipated refresh to classes and combat is also being moved to 2027, but Zenimax Online is looking at "some interim options" for classes in the meantime.

Giacomini lays out the main highlights of this year's two seasons in his writeup, and there's definitely a good amount of new stuff still coming this year, but his focus returns to the long-term vision.

"We've had bumps in the road over our 12-year history that we've always faced together," he says. "As our studio evolves, we are not looking to just 'maintain' the game. We are looking to grow it. You, our community, are the reason we have grown over the years, and we want to keep growing with you.

"Moving forward, our principles are simple: we will continue to build fun and rewarding experiences through our Seasonal model, deliver long-standing player-requested features and changes that make Tamriel more fulfilling, and find new ways to provide you with features and content to keep your adventures fresh."

Giacomini says plans for Elder Scrolls Online in 2027 are still being finalized, but he teases some "never before seen," "all-new experiences in Skyrim" as part of the roadmap. I've been playing Elder Scrolls Online on-and-off for almost a decade, and I'm cautiously excited to see what's next for a studio navigating dramatic leadership changes, a tighter budget, and a smaller team.
