[STEAM] My favorite band just reminded me that Geometry Dash exists, and now I’m playing it again

I think it’s safe to say Geometry Dash fills a distinct, sharp-angled niche in a lot of gamers’ hearts. In high school, I regularly slipped my smartphone out to play a bit whenever my teachers weren’t looking, but after a while, I all but forgot the game existed.

Recently, however, Geometry Dash has reentered my life, and it’s all thanks to the band Good Kid and a contest they put out a few months back based on the game.

Good Kid and Geometry Dash have a pretty unique history

For those unaware, Good Kid is a ********* alt-rock band made up of programmers-turned-musicians known for their upbeat tunes, nerdy aesthetic, and the character-driven lore threaded across their songs. Notably, the band refuses to issue DMCA takedown notices against re-uploads of their songs, a decision that Geometry Dash‘s active level-making community clearly appreciates.

Free from the fear of copyright violation, Geometry Dash level makers have designed some incredible stages based on Good Kid songs. The quality of care and craft on display in some of these levels is really impressive, seamlessly blending beautiful art and animation inspired by Good Kid‘s anime-inspired album covers with fast-paced, mind-bending platforming.

Good Kid’s Geometry Dash contest reminded me of a time I forgot

. From January to April, the Geometry Dash level editing community worked hard to craft specialized levels based on Good Kid songs. A panel of judges evaluated the levels based on their visual appeal, gameplay, and how well the developers incorporated the song into the level.

channel. Compiling the twenty runner-up levels with the five finalists, the video contains some incredible levels. The fourth-place entry, “Bubbly by TheCubedGuy” is probably my favorite, but the first-place was well-deserved, too.

I’ve been a big fan of Good Kid for about a year now, but I was completely unaware that they had such a strong following in the Geometry Dash community. I didn’t even know this contest was happening until it was already over, but seeing the love and effort the finalists and semi-finalists poured into their creations made me remember how much fun I had with the game when it first came out.

And so, over a decade since I last picked it up, I’ve started playing Geometry Dash again. It’s been amazing to see how much the game has changed since the last time I played it, and I can’t wait to see what other crazy things could come out of this bizarre intersection of two radically different times in my life.
