[STEAM] Dead by Daylight is getting an overhaul so big it’ll almost be a new game

Having come out in 2016, Dead by Daylight was made in Unreal Engine 4 with severe limitations and drawbacks, on account of BHVR being a very small team at the time. The devs expanded and improved the game over the years and even ported it to UE5, but those same limitations of the game’s backend remained.

Next year, to set itself up for the next 10 years, Dead by Daylight is finally taking the necessary step forward, ditching its previous backend in favor of a new, overhauled system that’ll see the game’s gameplay and graphics improve massively while allowing BHVR to start implementing things that were previously impossible.

As BHVR explains, this overhaul will “make every Trial more immersive and emotionally impactful” through “new character model reworks with expanded animation capabilities, alongside realistic facial animations that bring greater expression and nuance to characters.”

Alongside the beautiful environment, the characters themselves are going to get massively improved looks and animations. Image via BHVR “Maps and environments will also receive significant upgrades, including enhanced lighting, shading, and textures, improved Fog and Mist effects, a stronger Entity presence, and, for the first time in Dead by Daylight, dynamic weather systems featuring light rain, heavy rain, and storms,” the studio added.

To improve immersion, characters will start getting new voicelines, all freshly recorded as part of BHVR’s initiative to overhaul the game.

But the company isn’t going to do all the work alone. Eventually, the game will also get full mod support, and the tools are already in development at the studio, which should allow fans to express themselves to the utmost.

Dead by Daylight will also continue branching out into other media. The Casting of Frank Stone was a spin-off video game, but now a fully fledged movie is coming, directed by Thordur Palsson, known for his work on The Damned and The Valhalla Murders.
