God of War Laufey proved immediately controversial, and I get it. GOW sent players on a quest to give Faye peace in the afterlife, and now we learn she’d actually been fighting demons in hell the whole time. The memes are, naturally, marvelous.

I love how fans have already established that Fey isn’t in normal Hell, the one made for puny humans, but “super hell”, something meant to prevent even deities from getting away.

Or maybe even super duper hell, as others have pointed out. Anyway, the trend is to compare Faye’s predicament in the game to the direst moment in the history of various main characters, and it’s great.

I believe the tweet above translates to “let them cook,” and I’m all here for it.

The worthy criticism here, I believe, is how the plot of this game undermines the heartfelt journey in the God of War reboot, where Kratos and Atreus set out to scatter the ashes of Faye, because that’d be a worthy father-son journey, and also a way to grant Faye rest. Knowing she’d actually been in “super hell” the entire time does undermine that quite a bit, though, as I’ve just said, it’s important to let the people behind the game tell their story as they want to. The criticism, constructive, I hope, can follow after all is said and done.

An example of nefarious criticism is the one seen by Domino’s Pizza, which can be given the benefit of the doubt for having perhaps been born from a place of honesty, but it serves a shadier purpose, whether the author was aware or not.

account compared a God of War game with no Kratos to pepperoni pizza with no pepperoni, a take nobody really gains anything from. That sucks because, even if unintentionally, we’re looking at a big brand spreading what could very well read like echoes of Gamergate. Luckily, Sony Santa Monica shut that down very nicely.

And though I have no insider knowledge on Laufey, I’m pretty sure Kratos will be in the game. This feels like playing the God of War reboot, believing that we totally wouldn’t get to wield the blades of chaos at some point.

Another fair criticism is that, well, we’ve seen gods trying to make it out of hell in about half the games in this series, but that has never stopped them from being fun, so there’s that.

Regardless, seeing Faye pushing through what I’m very sure will be increasingly more perilous and brutal scenarios will only more clearly remind me of all the memes, which will definitely help carry me throughout the entire thing with equal parts laughter and thirst for ****** blood.
