[STEAM] Super Mario 64 was just beaten by 100 players at once, in the same session

GermGames modded Super Mario 64 into having multiplayer, then invited 99 Mario fans to beat the game together. The result is one of the most chaotic and heartwarming slices of gaming history I’ve ever seen, and, I assume, the highest number of yahoos per second ever recorded.

The whole thing is great because it completely changes a game you likely thought could no longer surprise you, and in a way that’s almost worthy of its own lore. It’s as if this one Mario tricked every other Mario in the multiverse into thinking he needed everyone’s help to beat this poor Bowser he’d actually already defeated thousands of times, sometimes even blindfolded. And, they all showed up, either because they really wanted to help, or because they’re always into clowning on Bowser. Don’t act as if so many other companies haven’t signed off on much sillier cash grabs.

. Even with all the difficulty accidentally added by the chaos, they manage to crush the game in a relatively short amount of time, so the whole thing never gets boring. This multiverse extravaganza would have all the Spider-Men from Spider-Man: No Way Home feel low-stakes.

The game works surprisingly well in a mode it was never meant to have. There are only a few setbacks for the Super Mario Mob, like getting stars, which forces players to take turns at beating some bosses, which the community has commented can result in some unexpected hilarity. Yes, the game is designed so that they all have to take turns beating King Bob-omb a total of 100 times to get everyone a star.

It’d be unfair to call Super Mario 64, which to many remains the greatest 3D platformer of all time, a dead game. It’s, however, both an old game from a sorely missed bygone era, so seeing it being revived in such a chaotically hilarious manner fills my heart with the utmost joy. Plus, I never really understood the outcry against “friendslop” games, and seeing a very similar concept applied to a juggernaut that nobody has ever had anything bad to say about might hopefully help others see how cool this genre can be.

Image via Nintendo This shows the modding and overall video gaming community at its best, and I doubt anyone would disagree. So, let’s hope Nintendo’s massive litigation hammer will turn a blind eye to this massive achievement and let us see similar things in the future, like a Super Smash Bros. 100-player battle royale.
