[STEAM] The Witcher 4 probably won’t get any expansions as CDPR aims to complete the trilogy within six years

Ever since The Witcher 3, CDPR has become known for its incredible old-fashioned expansion packs that connect directly to its main games while providing players with amazing standalone stories. So far, the company has released three: Blood and Wine, Hearts of Stone (for TW3), and Phantom Liberty for Cyberpunk 2077.

Next year,

, The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past is also set to release, though we don’t know the full details yet. But even though the company set a precedent with its releases so far, it probably won’t continue the practice in case of The Witcher 4, as it aims to expedite development on its new trilogy and have it complete within six years.

, one of CDPR’s chief executives, Michał Nowakowski, commented on the potential of new expansions in the new Witcher trilogy, saying it would be “difficult” to both push the games out and also work on separate expansion packs.

The Witcher 4 probably won’t get an expansion, though that can always change. Image via CDPR “As you mentioned in the question, the plans are pretty ambitious. Specifically, it’s to release three Witcher games within a six-year *******. It would be difficult, to be very honest, for us to add an expansion to the upcoming trilogy. This is where we are here and now with this particular issue,” Nowakowski said.

And it makes sense when you think about it. The Witcher 3 launched in May 2015, with Hearts of Stone coming out in October. It wouldn’t be until summer next year that we’d get Blood and Wine. Phantom Liberty took even longer and came out three years after the game. CDPR now plans to put out a fully-fledged sequel within the same timeframe, so I get where he’s coming from.

Even if CDPR doesn’t immediately commit to releasing proper expansions, nothing can ever be ruled out with this company. I mean, they’re making a new DLC for The Witcher 3 nearly 12 years after it came out, and in the case of Cyberpunk 2077, they went back on their word of “no more updates” more times than I could count. CDPR is a chaotic company when it comes to taking care of its core IPs, and we can never predict if they’ll just change their minds at some random point.

Furthermore, this new trilogy can still be expanded with free DLCs and updates, much like The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk, which both got loads of patches and even overhauls throughout their lifespans. Nothing is ever certain with CDPR, and I guess that’s part of the fun.
