[STEAM] Destiny 2 and Marathon fans are waging a review war following end-of-development announcement

As confirmed a couple of days ago, Destiny 2 is ending active development this June after the release of its final update, Moment of Triumph. This will close out the game’s nine-year-long journey and, of course, piss off most of its fans.

And instead of venting their frustrations on social media or through official means, Destiny 2 players, at least those on PC, are review-bombing Marathon and accusing that game of being the catalyst of Destiny‘s demise. Hundreds of negative reviews have been written under Marathon‘s Steam page, though not without a response from its own fan base.

“They killed D2, FOR THIS!!???” one review reads. “You corporate ***** keep sucking the life out of what gamers really care for in games and from companies we love. NO ONE cares for extraction shooters as much as you bean heads think we do,” reads another.

“I’m sorry that you died for this Destiny,” yet another user wrote.

Most of the reviews blame Marathon and its developers for directly influencing Bungie internally and leading it to cancel development on Destiny 2. Furthermore, the reviews try to compare the two games directly (which cannot be done as they’re both markedly different in genre, style, and gameplay), saying Marathon is hollow, whereas Destiny 2 has soul.

Those review-bombing the game have next to no hours in general, though some do have quite a good chunk of time invested in Marathon.

On the other hand, this spree of negativity prompted Marathon‘s own community to strike back, leaving positive reviews and praising the title’s design and gameplay, while also sneaking in some jabs at D2 itself.

“This game is a breath of fresh air. The PvP is very reminiscent of Destiny 1‘s PvP (D1 good, D2 bad),” one user wrote.

It’s genuinely strange to see Steam reviews of all places be used by fans of different games to take shots at one another. I’d expect to see this primarily on platforms like X, because people there usually love inflammatory discussions and heated exchanges of opinion. However, I guess there’s a first time for everything.

I pray it doesn’t turn into a habit for others, though.
