[STEAM] Destiny 2 is dead—but its final update is everything we ever asked for

After nearly a decade of fans saying Destiny 2 is dead, it finally happened: Bungie is shipping the game’s last update. It’s a colossal one, with longstanding fan requests, major refreshes, heaps of cosmetics, and just enough of a hint of Destiny 3 to keep players coping.

“While our love for Destiny 2 has not changed, it has become clear that after The Final Shape, we have reached the time for our shared worlds, and Destiny, to live beyond Destiny 2,” the studio wrote

On June 9, fans can say goodbye to Destiny 2 with Monument of Triumph, the game’s swan song update. This leaves players with lots of goodies to earn, including the promised raid and dungeon loot refresh, as well as a tier compatibility pass on destination gear. Crafted weapons can be upgraded to tier five, and Tier-compatible Exotic armor will be automatically shifted to tier five as well.

Each class is getting one new Aspect (Solar for Titans and Hunters, Void for Warlock), while Void Hunters are getting a new melee and both Darkness elements are getting a new grenade.

The Director menu is coming back with a new coat of paint. The Portal—a signature of the late The Edge of Fate era and widely considered to have played a role in Destiny 2‘s downfall—is going back to the shadows, though it’s getting quite a few changes to its gear and activities.

Return of the King. Image via Bungie Gambit Ops is coming back from the dead, and the studio is adding the somewhat requested SRL (a.k.a. Sparrow Racing League) inspired by the original Destiny.

Since it’s a farewell party, guardians everywhere should be dressed to the nines—and that’s why Bungie is finally overhauling Engrams, a beefed-up rewards pass, adding Engram Focusing for Bright Engrams, and changing the Eververse rotation to daily.

Once Monument of Triumph ships, Destiny 2 will get a Collection treatment, allowing anyone to buy campaigns, dungeon keys, separate packs, and more with just one purchase. Expect permanent discounts in the future, the studio said.

The news may come as bittersweet to fans who have dedicated years to the franchise. It’s nice to see Destiny 2 getting this much love and generosity from Bungie, but it’s a shame it’s coming at its final hour.

There is just enough of a tinge of hope to get fans imagining a Destiny 3 in the blog post, however: the “live beyond Destiny 2” wording sure seems to allude to it, and Bungie said it will incubate its “next games” (plural). Though news of a sequel may not come any time soon, at least the game we have is getting a fitting farewell.
