[STEAM] ‘We did say we were going to work on it at some point:’ Red Barrels co-founder says a ‘project’ is in the works, and I sure hope it’s Outlast 3

Last month, I had the chance to speak with Red Barrels co-founder Philippe Morin, where we discussed the current state of the horror genre, how we got here, and what Outlast's position is within it.

Of course, I had to touch upon the potential of a new game, and perhaps even Outlast 3, and the response I got now has me yearning to see what the studio is working on.

Outlast 2 is the last "contemporary" entry in the series, following the first game and its Whistleblower DLC. Image via Red Barrels The Outlast Trials remains Red Barrels' main game at the moment, and as Morin told me, the game's monetization model is working well enough to sustain the company and even fund a new project that the studio is apparently working on in parallel to the live-service co-op title.

"Right now, because The Outlast Trials is in good shape and sustainable, at least for the time being, then yes, some of us are starting to work on a second game in parallel," Morin said, adding that the studio is "switching [between] two projects at the same time."

As he explains, Red Barrels always wanted to make another game but didn't have the right chance to try and do so. Of course, The Outlast Trials was in development for a long time, and the result of chance, given that the studio noticed players loved to play Outlast together by swapping between players whenever one of them died.

Before that, however, Outlast was nearly scrapped following the second mainline game, since the studio was "burned out." Thankfully, though, that is no longer the case, as I have a good feeling that the studio is working on either an Outlast sequel or another unique spin-off.

Speaking of touching upon events and situations from past games, Morin said that The Outlast Trials' status as a prequel makes things difficult, but that "perhaps a future game will give more." When we joked around about the elusive third game, he said the studio "did say we were going to work on it at some point" because "it would only make sense" considering the financial viability of the franchise.

So, yeah, while it's not conclusive, I have a strong feeling we'll be hearing more from Red Barrels very soon, and it won't be related to another new season of Trials.
