In the final quarter of 2025, sales were down by nearly 50 percent compared to the same ******* last year, indicating that these new prices may not have been the best decision.

Sony is making loads of cash despite the dip in sales. Image via PlayStation In total, Sony sold 16 million PS5s in the last year, bringing the total to over 93 million units. This hardware generation was also described as Sony's most profitable to date, with over $136 billion in earnings thus far. Furthermore, the next year could prove a bit challenging for the Japanese giant as AI memory shortages are going to determine its sales forecast for fiscal year 2026. It will have to secure memory at "reasonable prices," but given the scale at which the crisis is currently impacting gaming, I wouldn't be surprised if we see another price hike or availability issues for PlayStation 5 consoles.

Given how impactful the last price increase seems to have been, we could be looking at another decline in PS5 sales, though Sony seems confident that there shouldn't be much difference in hardware earnings between fiscal years 2026 and 2025.

AI is very unpredictable at the moment, though, so we will have to wait and see how that will reflect on the industry.
