Two men allegedly caught displaying Nazi flag at hotel in Sydney’s CBD

Two men who allegedly displayed a flag with a Nazi symbol on it in Sydney’s CBD have been charged after tough new hate laws were announced.

Police were called to a Liverpool St hotel in Darlinghurst about 4.30pm on Thursday following reports a man was displaying a flag with the swastika symbol on it.

A 51-year-old man and another 44-year-old man were arrested nearby.

The flag, along with several electronic devices, were seized.

Both men were charged with knowingly display by public act Nazi symbol without excuse.

They were both refused bail and were set to front Downing Centre Local Court on Friday.

NSWPremier Chris Minns said the government has acted following the recent escalation of graffiti, racial hatred and anti-Semitism in the community, which also included a fire attack on a childcare centre.

“We have seen disgusting acts of racial hatred and anti-Semitism,” Mr Minns said.

“These are strong new laws, and they need to be because these attacks have to stop.

“NSW is a multicultural state, and these acts designed to intimidate and divide will not work.”
