Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to I-86 near the Steuben County line shortly after 7 p.m. to investigate a one-car ****** in the eastbound lane. The driver involved in the accident, the sole occupant of the vehicle, suffered a head injury and was transported to Corning Hospital for treatment and released. Due to poor lighting and the location of the accident, additional deputies responded to the scene to secure the area, said Chemung County Sheriff Bill Schrom. A Chemung County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle and a tractor trailer hauling milk suffered extensive damage after a collision at an accident scene on I-86 near the Steuben County line Friday night. A deputy parked at the rear of the scene stopped partially on the shoulder of the highway and the driving lane with her directional signal activated to guide approaching traffic into the passing lane. As the deputy was preparing to exit the patrol car, a tractor trailer failed to move over as it approached the accident scene and struck the rear of the patrol car on the driver’s side, sending it off the south shoulder of the highway. The vehicle traveled down an embankment and suffered “extensive damage,” Schrom detailed. The front of the tractor trailer also suffered heavy damage. The deputy involved in the ****** was treated for minor injuries at Corning Hospital and released, while the tractor trailer driver was uninjured.
