Sources have confirmed to The West *********** that the Eagles are willing to split their first pick in this year’s draft as they look to bring in as much young talent as possible. It is a similar move to the one they made two years ago when they split their pick No.2 — which was pushed back to No.3 after a bid on Brisbane father-son Will Aschroft — for picks eight and 12 in a four-club mega trade that landed them Reuben Ginbey and Elijah Hewett. But they held onto their first pick in last year’s draft, bringing Harley Reid to the club, despite lucrative offers to split that selection. This year’s draft is viewed as strong but also deep, with several players in contention for the coveted No.1 selection and not much separating the first 20 or so players. The Eagles are expected to be extremely active in the next 10 days as they look to bolster their list under new coach Andrew McQualter and list boss Matt Clarke. A lot of their work will centre around Hawthorn’s pick No.14, which West Coast are set to land as part of a deal for premiership defender Tom Barrass. That selection is set to be key to the Eagles landing out-of-contract Richmond vice-captain Liam Baker, who has picked the Eagles to reconnect former Tigers midfielder coach McQualter after requesting a trade home. While Baker is without a deal, the Subiaco-product is understood to be strong in his belief that the Tigers must be rightly compensated in a trade for him after 128 games in seven seasons at Punt Road. The Eagles are also awaiting on a decision from Baker’s Richmond teammate and unrestricted free agent Jack Graham about joining the club. Graham, 26, has a four-year deal on the table from both West Coast and Richmond and was taking the weekend to decide his future after touring the former’s facilities in the middle of last week. West Coast’s first move is set to be sending veteran forward Jack Darling to North Melbourne which could be made as soon as Monday. Darling, 32, who has played the second most games and kicked the second most goals in West Coast history at 298 and 532 has requested a move to the Kangaroos on a multi-year deal to extend his career. The 14-season veteran is set to join Alastair Clarkson’s side for a fourth-round selection which could clear close to $800,000 off the Eagles’ salary cap for next season. West Coast have been linked to several other players this trade ******* including out-of-favour Brisbane midfielder Deven Robertson who turned down a move to the Eagles last year in favour of staying at the Lions on a two-year deal. Port Adelaide defender Tom Clurey is also an option to add defensive depth in the wake of losing Barrass, while West *********** product Riley Garcia is also a chance to leave the Western Bulldogs to look for more senior opportunities.
