Europe hit back in doubles in tense Laver Cup

Europe’s Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud have combined to beat Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe 6-2 7-6 (8-6) in doubles to cut the World team’s lead to 8-7 on the final day of the Laver Cup.

In the equivalent of golf’s Ryder Cup for men’s tennis, the winning team need to reach 13 points for victory. Sunday’s wins in Berlin are each worth three points.

As many singles rubbers as needed will now be played, starting with Daniil Medvedev against Shelton, who has been the busiest of the players by far over the three days given his double prowess.

Germany’s Alexander Zverev, who lost to Taylor ****** on Saturday and complained of a fever, is due to play Tiafoe later before Alcaraz will take on ****** if necessary.

Team Europe are again being captained by Bjorn Borg and Team World by John McEnroe. Europe won the first three editions but the World have triumphed in the last two.

The tournament, this time taking place in Berlin, switches each year between a venue in Europe and the rest of the world.
