Spider-Man: No Way Home hit theaters almost three years ago, and it’s been a long time since we’ve heard any word about the next adventure of Spider-Man. But now, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Destin Daniel Cretton is in talks to helm Spider-Man 4 for Marvel Studios and Sony. And the film may begin ********* very soon.

, Marvel and Sony are planning to film the sequel early next year. Tom Holland will be back as Peter Parker/Spider-Man, and the screenwriting team of Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers are also returning for the new film.

Assuming Cretton closes his deal, he will be only the fourth Spider-Man live-action director since the original film was released in 2002. Sam Raimi helmed the first Spider-Man trilogy, while Marc Webb tackled the two Amazing Spider-Man films. More recently, Jon Watts directed his own Spider-Man trilogy with Holland.

Cretton was previously signed to direct Avengers 5 when it was still known as Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. He subsequently stepped aside before Marvel retooled it into Avengers: Doomsday and hired the Russo brothers to helm that film and Avengers: Secret Wars. Cretton has been busy working on Marvel’s live-action Wonder Man series as well, and he was also slated to helm Shang-Chi 2. But with Spider-Man 4 now taking priority, it’s unclear when Cretton’s other sequel will begin production.

There isn’t a release date for Spider-Man 4 yet, but a summer 2026 release may fit nicely into Marvel’s film slate.
