Utilising the inside gate, Mornington Glory, a $9.50 TABtouch elect, burrowed underneath the pack to claim the early lead and, despite pressure from out wide, found the position under his own steam. Golden Slipper winner Lady Of Camelot ($5.50) sat three-quarters-of-a-length away outside the pacemaker with race favourite Estriella ($3.20) forced to work outside the pair three wide. With 400m to go, Mornington Glory continued to travel as strongly as any with both horses outside placed under pressure, while $4.60 second favourite I Wish I Win remained last but one. Cornering with 200m left, Brown asked everything from Mornington Glory and the gelding found a length from Estriella with few others landing signficant blows. Despite a late flurry from Hayasugi ($11), Mornington Glory never looked like being grabbed and scored by a half-length from that runner, with Lady Of Camelot and Estriella next best. Hoop Ethan Brown was at a loss for words to describe his first major triumph. “I don’t know, really. I’m very over the moon, it’ll take a while to sink in but there’s a great bunch of owners in this horse,” Brown said. “It’s terrific to get a Group 1 win for Gav, it’s his first and capped off what was a challenging day. I’m so rapt.” “He was presented here in terrific order. “He drew gate one and he flew the lids and just had an easy time of it. “(He was) fit, well – I was the beneficiary of a well-prepared horse.” Bedggood, who was beside himself when the horse claimed the Carlyon Stakes last start, tried to contain his emotions. “I’m pretty good, I felt a bit of pressure last time, but I was pretty comfortable coming here today,” Bedggood said. “We were the underdog and he seems to always be that way. “He took bad luck out of the equation today. “He’s begun really well his last two starts and when he jumped a half in front of them today – there was no instruction to lead – but Browny just used his initiative and went with the horse and the rest is history. “It nearly didn’t happen, he was retired this horse and, as I said last time, these owners throwing me a bone (was heartening.” + WA mare Amelia’s Jewel produced a workmanlike performance but found one better in her first Sydney performance in the $300,000 Ikon Tramway Stakes (1400m) at Randwick. The daughter of Siyouni, who went off a $3.30 favourite, sat midfield before getting to the outside at the 400m but took plenty of time to wind up as Royal Patronage ($17) sped away below the 200m. The five-year-old ground home and made continued progress but came up a length-and-a-quarter short when finishing second.
