Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater is a game many fans have been waiting a long time for, and recent previews have shown that the updated control scheme in this remake might be exactly what was needed to bring the beloved classic to a modern audience. 

Konami along with co-developer Virtuos is sticking close to the original PS2 game, with this absolutely faithful remake. It does have some fresh and much-needed changes to the controls that could make the game more enjoyable for today’s gamers.

New Control Scheme Brings Improvements to Metal Gear Solid Delta

According to recent press previews, the game keeps the old-school vibe but also adds improvements that aim to make it more smooth, accessible, and fun.

The control scheme in Metal Gear Solid Delta has been reworked, and it might be the most significant change in the remake. While the original controls are still an option via the legacy mode, the new setup seems to have been designed with modern gaming expectations and controls in mind. 

The remake moves the item and ******* selection from the L2 and R2 buttons to the D-Pad, with the right thumbstick now handling the scrolling through items. This is a big shift, and it could make the gameplay feel smoother and more clicky for new players.

Another improvement is the quick access to the Codec screen by pressing up on the D-Pad, and the ability to select pre-set camouflage loadouts by pressing down. This update cuts down on the time players spend in menus, which was a bit tedious in the original game. 

The addition of these shortcuts can speed up gameplay and keep the focus on the action, rather than pausing to dig through menus.

In the demo that was shown to press, there were even more time-saving tweaks, like being able to quickly add new items or weapons to the quick-access menu as soon as they are found. 

This change might seem like a small thing, but it can make a big difference in keeping the gameplay flow uninterrupted.

Balancing Nostalgia with Modern Convenience

The updated controls in Metal Gear Solid Delta just show that Konami and Virtuos are very serious about this remake.

They’re clearly trying to balance staying true to the original game while also making it more suitable for a modern audience and quality-of-life changes and improvements that have taken place in the 20 years since the original’s release.

The improvements made to the control scheme and menu navigation are likely to be well-received by those who found the original controls a bit clunky by modern standards, and had a hard time going back and playing the game, especially after the amazing controls and crisp gameplay of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

However, for those who have played the original game and have muscle memory built around the classic controls, it might take some time to adjust. Thankfully, there’s an option called Legacy mode that brings back these controls.

Metal Gear Solid Delta is shaping up to be an extremely faithful and impressive remake with just the right amount of modern tweaks. The visual upgrade is impressive, but it’s the new control scheme that might truly help this game just feel right to control and play around with.
