Fisherman saves 68-year-old Shawano County man after he crashed vehicle down embankment into the Wolf River

SHAWANO, Wis. (WFRV) – A local fisherman saved a 68-year-old Shawano County man after he crashed his vehicle down an embankment into the Wolf River on Wednesday morning.

According to a release, deputies with the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a single-vehicle ****** on Highway 29 near Highway 22 in Belle Plaine.

A person fishing on the Wolf River came across a vehicle in the water with the driver, later identified as a 68-year-old man, who had severe injuries.

Evidence on the scene shows the man had been traveling west on Highway 29 at around 3:00 a.m. when he entered the median, missed the guard rails, and drove down a deep embankment into the river.

The driver told the authorities he had been lying injured in the water for several hours, yelling for help. The Shawano County Sheriff’s Office says the ****** area is secluded, meaning no one could hear his cries for help until the fisherman found him.

Authorities were able to extricate the man from the vehicle and transport him a short distance down the river on a ***** department boat to a more accessible area before transporting him to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Highway 29 was closed for several hours while several tow trucks worked on removing the vehicle from the river.

The Shawano County Sheriff’s Office thanked the fisherman for rescuing the 68-year-old. No additional details were provided.
