‘He is yet to taste defeat’: Joe Chan looks to extend remarkable record after signing new deal to stay with the Storm

Melbourne has locked in its lucky charm, with Joe Chan extending his contract until the end of the 2028 season in a big boost to the club on the eve of the finals.

Chan, 22, joined the Storm at the end of the 2022 season and has won all 11 of his matches in the NRL, including his debut in the final round last year when the club rested some of its stars and blooded the likes of Jack Howarth and Sua Fa’alogo against the Broncos.

The back-rower has been stuck behind Eli Katoa and Shawn Blore this season, but he’s still managed to play 10 games after impressing Storm officials with two strong years for Catalans in the Super League.

His decision to recommit comes on the back of roommate Alec Macdonald’s call to extend his stay with the Storm, with Chan part of the club’s first father-son duo after his dad Alex spent two seasons in Melbourne.

“It’s such a great opportunity that the club has given me and being offered a new contract is a sign for me that they have ****** in me and that my hard work is paying off,” Chan said.

“I wouldn’t be here today without my family’s support and sacrifices along the way and they are so happy for me getting this chance.

“My mum, in particular, has been a big part of my journey. She has given up a lot and is the rock of the family. She gave up her dream job as a teacher’s aide at a primary school when our family moved to France.

“I love that I can build a future at such a good club with my flatmate and best mate Alec. Even though it’s considered work playing footy, I’m having fun and making lifelong friends.”

Chan got his chance last year when the Storm rested a stack of players and he’ll likely get another opportunity on Thursday, with the club confirming they will be resting several stars for the trip to Townsville.

It’s another chance for the versatile forward to impress after he was named the Tigers’ rookie of the year in the Queensland Cup 12 months ago.

“It was a very proud moment late last season when Joe became the first father-son to play for the Melbourne Storm,” Storm director of football Frank Ponissi said.

“Joe has shown tremendous potential this season, playing in 10 games despite navigating a number of injuries.

“Joe has the remarkable record that in all of his matches so far in NRL for the club, he is yet to taste defeat.

“Joe has an exciting future at the club and we are excited that he has committed long term at the club.”
