, and millions more visit every year. With that many people in an area dominated by car transportation, collisions are inevitable.

In 2022, the most recent year of traffic collision data available from the South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS), Horry County had more than 11,000 crashes, the fourth-most of any county in the state.

Although official data has not been published for 2023 or 2024, information from SCDPS reveals the intersections in Horry County that have had the most traffic collisions in recent years.

Between 2020 and 2024 so far, the intersection between S.C. Highway 9 and S.C. Highway 57 near Little Rock had the most collisions, with 49 crashes.

None of the 10 intersections with the highest frequency of collisions had any fatal collisions, though one person was seriously injured in a collision at the intersection of U.S. Highway 17 and 38th Avenue North in Myrtle Beach.

The 10 intersections with the most collisions between 2020 and mid-August 2024 in Horry County are:

1. S.C. Highway 9 and S.C. Highway 57

2. Wright Boulevard and ******* Street

3. U.S. Highway 17 and ***** Pond Road

4. U.S. Highway 501 and Waccamaw Pines Drive

5. and 6. U.S. Highway 501 and S.C. Highway 544 (tied)

5. and 6. U.S. Highway 501 and Gardner Lacy Road (tied)

7. and 8. U.S. Highway 17 and 38th Avenue North (tied)

7. and 8. U.S. Highway 17 and Mr. Joe White Avenue (tied)

9. and 10. U.S. Highway 501 and Carolina Forest Boulevard (tied)

9. and 10. El Bethel Road and ******* Street (tied)

With 78 fatal collisions in which 80 *****, Horry County had the second-most deadly rate of crashes of any South Carolina county in 2022. Fatality information for 2023 and 2024 hasn’t yet been released in SCDPS’s annual traffic collision report, but previous reports show the numbers of deaths and serious injuries in the county.

Despite the total number of deaths caused by crashes in Horry County, only five intersections in the county had fatal collisions between 2020 and mid-August 2024.

The intersections between U.S. Highway 501 and Seaboard Street and between S.C. Highway 9 and Carolina Bays Parkway were the deadliest, as two people were ******* at each.

U.S. Highway 17 and 8th Avenue North
