But it was here that an event took place that was to change the course of British royal history. In July 1818 the drawing room was the setting for a hastily-arranged double wedding: one between William, Duke of Clarence, third son of King George III, and Princess Adelaide of Saxe-Coburg-Meiningen, the other between Edward, Duke of Kent, the king’s fourth son, and Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfield.
