Norris tops first Dutch GP practice

McLaren’s Lando Norris has topped the first practice for the Dutch Grand Prix as the Formula One season resumed following the summer break.

Norris clocked 1 minute 12.322 seconds around the 4.259-kilometre Circuit Zandvoort to beat home favourite and defending champion Max Verstappen of Red Bull by 0.201 seconds. Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes was third.

Friday’s session ran mostly under wet conditions, with McLaren and Aston Martin the first teams to change to slick tyres with less than 15 minutes left in the session.

The track grew busy in the final minutes in a frantic end to the session, with Verstappen only jumping to second in his final lap.

Triple world champion Verstappen is aiming for a fourth straight win at his home race on Sunday, which will also mark his 200th Grand Prix since his debut in 2015.

The Dutchman leads the championship by 78 points ahead of Norris but has not won in four races and only made the podium once in that *******.
