WA Labor cuts ties with local CFMEU after branch placed in administration

WA Labor will “suspend” ties with the CFMEU – including not accepting donations – after the militant construction union was forced into administration.

Premier Roger Cook announced the decision on Friday morning just hours after the union’s construction division in all States and Territories — including WA – were placed under the control of administrator Mark Irving KC.

Mr Cook has for weeks resisted pressure to follow the lead of other Labor branches and cut links with the under-siege union, adamant allegations of links to organised ****** were limited to the east coast.

Those claims were undermined after The West revealed the ********* past of some union officials.

Mr Cook has now relented, writing to WA Labor party officials requesting it suspend the union from the party.

WA Labor will not accept donations from the union while it is under administration, which could be as long as five years.

“I always said that I won’t hesitate to take further action if necessary – and given the WA branch will now be placed into administration, we are acting immediately,” Mr Cook said in a statement on Friday.

“Unions do important work to protect workers, which is why I have been a union member my whole ****** life, it’s crucial the issues that have been exposed – particularly on the east coast -are addressed once and for all.”

Mr Cook last month announced new laws to ensure officials would need to pass a “fit and proper person” test before entering worksites.

The WA and ACT branches have been spared the full force of the intervention after the Federal Government accepted no ********* allegations had been substantiated against them.

Unlike union leaders from the CFMEU’s troubled east coast branches, WA branch secretary Mick Buchan and senior colleagues will not be forced out of their roles — but will be rendered completely powerless.
