House Democrat backs off rogue attempt to force Trump impeachment vote — for now
Washington — Democratic Rep. Shri Thanedar of Michigan backed down from his attempt to force a vote on impeaching President Trump after it lacked support from his own party.
The House was expected to vote Wednesday evening to table Thanedar’s motion to impeach Mr. Trump for alleged high crimes and misdemeanors, which would have effectively killed it.
Thanedar filed his seven articles of impeachment against Mr. Trump in April, but moved Tuesday to bring it up as “privileged,” requiring the House to act on the motion within two legislative days. But Thanedar changed course by Wednesday afternoon after having conversations with his colleagues.
“Instead, I will add to my articles of impeachment and continue to rally the support of both Democrats and Republicans to defend the Constitution with me,” he wrote, adding that he will “continue to pursue all avenues to put this President on notice and hold him accountable for his many impeachable crimes.”
His 29-page resolution accuses Mr. Trump of obstructing justice, overriding Congress’ power to appropriate funds, abusing the power of the presidency, violating First Amendment rights and unlawfully creating the Department of Government Efficiency.
Thanedar’s effort was not expected to receive much support from Democrats. The three Democrats who were listed as initial co-sponsors of the resolution when it was introduced last month quickly pulled their names after learning it was not cleared by leadership. And, Rep. Pete Aguilar of California, the Democratic caucus chair, said the move to impeach Mr. Trump was impractical because Republicans control both chambers of Congress.
“This is not the right approach we should be taking,” Aguilar told reporters earlier Wednesday, adding that Democratic leadership would be joining Republicans in voting to block the attempt.
Aguilar said Democrats are focused on Republican attempts to cut Medicaid through the reconciliation process as they seek to slash spending to pay for trillions in tax cuts.
“Everything else is a distraction,” Aguilar said.
Thanedar acknowledged the hesitancy in his party to impeach Mr. Trump in a news conference Wednesday morning, but defended his action as something supported by the public and said that he would continue pushing the issue “until we have a victory.”
“Many people in my party and elsewhere say, ‘Is this the right time to do this?,” he said. “People all over the country are saying this is the right time to do it!”
“Some Democrats have called me a lunatic, just like the president has called me lunatic,” he said. “Nobody has said to me, ‘Mr. Thanedar, the seven articles of impeachment that you presented to the U.S. Congress, they’re piece of s***. They’re not good. You missed the point.'”
House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, called the effort an “embarrassing political stunt.”
Mr. Trump was impeached twice during his first term — in 2019 for his efforts to pressure the Ukrainian government to investigate his political rival Joe Biden, and again in 2021 for the Capitol riot. The Senate voted to acquit him in both cases.
Thanedar is not the only Democrat to push for Mr. Trump to be impeached again. Rep. Al Green of Texas has repeatedly threatened to file his own articles of impeachment against the president during his second term but has yet to do so.

Capel Primary School to once again take part in national initiative to support health and road safety
Capel Primary School to once again take part in national initiative to support health and road safety
Primary schools around the South West will take part in a national initiative to support road safety and physical activity on Friday.
National Walk Safely to School Day — now in its 26th year — is an event championed by the Pedestrian Council Australia for all primary schools across the country and aims to promote the health and environmental benefits of children walking to school.
According to the council, regular walking has a favourable impact on children’s cognitive and academic performance, encourages positive environmental action and reduces car dependency and dangerous traffic congestion around schools.
Chief executive Harold Scruby said the national initiative also promoted healthy eating and encouraged schools and P&Cs to host a healthy breakfast on the day.

“The extremely disturbing childhood obesity epidemic continues to affect one in four children at critical levels across Australia,” he said.
“The best exercise for all Australians is walking regularly.
“Children need at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day. We should encourage them to take a walk before school, during and at the end of their day.”
Capel Primary School is set to take part, something principal Darren Simpson said they had been doing for many years.
“The school community proudly comes together whenever we promote the healthy culture of walking to school,” he said.
On Friday, children will be encouraged to include a walk at the beginning of the day, at lunch time and on the way home, in the hope of building regular walking into their daily routine.

Prosecutor in Trump classified files case takes 5th Amendment in private interview with Congress
Prosecutor in Trump classified files case takes 5th Amendment in private interview with Congress
WASHINGTON (AP) — A key prosecutor on the classified documents case against President Donald Trump invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination during a congressional interview Wednesday, declining to answer questions because of concern about the Trump administration’s willingness to “weaponize the machinery of government” against perceived adversaries, a spokesman said.
Jay Bratt had been subpoenaed to appear before the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee for a closed-door interview but did not answer substantive questions because of his Fifth Amendment constitutional right to remain silent.
Bratt spent more than three decades at the Justice Department before retiring in January, just weeks before President Donald Trump took office. He was a key national security prosecutor on special counsel Jack Smith’s team, which in 2023 charged Trump with illegally hoarding classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida and with obstructing the government’s efforts to recover them.
“He did not choose to investigate Mar-a-Lago; rather, the facts and evidence of a serious breach of law and national security led him there,” said Peter Carr, a spokesman for Justice Connection, a network of Justice Department alumni.
“This administration and its proxies have made no effort to hide their willingness to weaponize the machinery of government against those they perceive as political enemies,” Carr added. “That should alarm every American who believes in the rule of law. In light of these undeniable and deeply troubling circumstances, Mr. Bratt had no choice but to invoke his Fifth Amendment rights.”
The statement describes Bratt as someone who spent his career in public service “protecting our nation from some of the gravest national security threats—including spies, murderers, and other criminal actors—always without fear or favor.”
A federal judge in Florida dismissed the prosecution last year after concluding that Smith had been illegally appointed to the special counsel role. The Justice Department’s appeal of that decision was pending at the time of Trump’s presidential win in November, at which point Smith’s team abandoned that case and a separate prosecution charging Trump with plotting to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
Since taking office, Trump has engaged in a far-reaching retribution campaign against officials he regards as adversaries.
His administration has issued executive orders aimed at punishing major law firms, including some with current or past associations with prosecutors who previously investigated him. The Justice Department, meanwhile, has fired lawyers who served on Smith’s team and also established a “weaponization working group” aimed at reviewing actions taken during the Biden administration. That group is led by Ed Martin, whose nomination to be the top federal prosecutor in Washington was pulled by the White House last week.

Two South West towns recognised for waterwise efforts
Two South West towns recognised for waterwise efforts
Two South West towns have received recognition for their efforts to be waterwise.
The Shire of Capel has been recognised as a new gold waterwise council, and the Shire of Boyup Brook has received a newly endorsed waterwise aquatic centre recognition for the town’s swimming pool.
Capel president Doug Kitchen said reaching a gold standard was new for the shire but it had been recognised in the past on a lower level.
“It’s about conserving one of our most precious resources because water is vital to our way of life and agriculture in our area,” he said.
“It’s important in an environment such as ours where we have hot, long summers that we are aware of the water resource we have and find ways to use it better.”
Cr Kitchen said the administration building has used a rainwater tank, and others had waterwise urinals or toilets, while all gardens used natives and waterwise plantings.
Shire of Boyup Brook manager of community services Nicki Jones said pool manager Tara Reid was contacted last year to discuss water usage.
“The pool season runs from October to April each year, and during this time uses a considerable amount of water,” Ms Jones said.
“Together with the Water Corporation through a water audit we identified leaking taps and water sources that didn’t have water-saving devices. The Water Corporation generously upgraded our taps, toilet cisterns and showerheads to water-saving devices.
“The patrons of the pool also contributed to the reduction of water by having shorter showers.”
Ms Jones said leaks were monitored and repaired, including replacing an ageing and faulty solar hot-water system with a heat pump.

Woman with Invisible Disability Mocked by Passengers When Trying to Pre-Board Flight. Then She Got the Last Laugh
Woman with Invisible Disability Mocked by Passengers When Trying to Pre-Board Flight. Then She Got the Last Laugh
A plane passenger is sharing her humiliating boarding experience, but says she got a rare taste of justice in the end.
The incident occurred as the woman, 32, prepared to board a recent flight, she says. The gate agent announced pre-boarding would begin for individuals requiring more time, including those with disabilities. She approached the gate with her ticket.
“My pass said ‘PREBOARD NOW,’” the woman wrote on Reddit.

The passenger, who shares that she has a disability that is not readily visible to others, moved past a handful of other passengers crowded around the gate waiting for their group to be called. However, when she presented her ticket, “The person at the gate said I couldn’t board. I pointed to where it said ‘preboard now’ and she said no, I had to wait for Group 5,” the passenger wrote.
Embarrassed to have been turned away, she walked back to her place toward the rear of the line. As she passed another waiting couple in the first class boarding group, she says, the woman laughed and remarked in her direction, “I didn’t think so!”
“Like, as if I was dumb and just trying to board in front of other people,” wrote the passenger, who also noted that she looks extremely young for her age and is often mistaken for a teenager, which may have added to the perception she was trying to break the rules.
Frustrated, she went and found another airline employee and showed her the boarding pass. The crew member asked her who told her she couldn’t board the flight and thee passenger pointed out the gate agent.
The second employee then personally walked her up to the gate where she was able to pre-board her flight successfully.
The experience left her shaken up, however. “I’m glad they did let me board early but, I’m sitting on the plane so embarrassed,” the woman added. “I’m going to cry. Tbh being disabled and looking like a kid is already embarrassing.”
Despite the situation, the woman got to experience an unexpectedly satisfying moment when she encountered the people that had been rude to her in line for a second time: “I made sure to say hi to the first class couple who laughed at me as I boarded with them.”
United Airlines did not reply to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

In the comments fellow Reddit users offered apologies for the uncomfortable and unfair situation. Others encouraged the woman to file a complaint with the airline over not allowing her to board in the first place.
“If you’re pass said preboard and they didn’t let you preboard that is really messed up. File a complaint,” wrote one Reddit user.
The passenger’s story is a case of plane etiquette justice that can feel rare in modern air travel.
Entitled passengers often try to bend the boarding rules or simply cut the line to get on the pane sooner, hoping not to be caught. The conundrum has led to a crackdown from airlines.
Several have recently implemented technology that could have avoided this snafu and others like it.
American Airlines now has an “audible signal” when they scan their ticket that will alert gate agents when passengers try to jump ahead of others who have paid for their position in line, the Washington Post reported in October.
A spokesperson for the carrier tells PEOPLE that the new system is already being tested in various airports, with plans to continue to expand.

New women’s changerooms in store for Bunbury United Soccer Club following $400,000 grant
New women’s changerooms in store for Bunbury United Soccer Club following $400,000 grant
Bunbury United Soccer Club have received nearly $400,000 from the Federal Government to construct women’s changerooms at their Hay Park ground.
The package is part of the government’s $200 million Play Our Way program, which aims to give women and girls more opportunities to access, participate and stay involved in sport and physical activity.
BUSC president Claire Reimers said they were told of their successful application are few months ago and are excited to finally share the good news.
“We’re excited to keep more females in the sport,” Reimers said.
“We know that one of their problem areas is having adequate facilities and by being able to build female changerooms, we can introduce more girls into the sport and keep females around soccer, having the facilities that they need to play.”
The new changerooms — slated to be completed by the end of 2026 — will mean Bunbury United’s girls and women’s sides will no longer have to share a changeroom with the men’s teams or be forced to kit up on the grass, or at home.
The club this year is boasting more girls than boys in the under-6 age groups, with multiple other all-girls teams, as well as girls who play in the mixed competition.
They also have a seniors side and a masters team, with hundreds of players across the association.
Player Scarlette Harris said the new facility would provide a safe environment and make her teammates feel more comfortable.
“We will actually be able to leave our stuff in there, we’ll be able to have showers, we’ll actually feel safe and not freak out that someone might walk in,” she said.
“I think it also leaves a safe environment for the men as well, that they can have their own space.
“And I think it just will bring us all closer together — all women together, stand together.”
As part of the development, female referees — who currently have to share a changing room with their male counterparts — will also have access to their own room where they can get ready for matches.

Exquisite new-to-science frog species has golden legs and odd habits
Exquisite new-to-science frog species has golden legs and odd habits
The tiny frog still packs a colourful punch
Alexander Tamanini Mônico
Resplendent with its blue stripes and golden legs, this newly described poison dart frog may look imposing, but it is only about the size of a thumbnail, measuring just 14 to 17 millimetres from the tip of its snout to its derrière, or cloaca.
Esteban Koch at the National Institute of Amazonian Research in Manaus, Brazil, and his colleagues found the frog in the forests of the Juruá river basin in Brazil in 2023 and went back to look for further specimens in 2024. The team has now officially described it and named the species Ranitomeya aetherea.
Little is known about the frog, but there are clues about its parental care system. Koch’s team hasn’t found any large groups of tadpoles, hatched from a big clutch of eggs. Instead, they have spotted only individuals, mainly in water-filled cavities where leaves join the stem on palm-like plants called Phenakospermum guyannense.
The team saw one female deposit a single egg, which suggests that eggs are laid singly, as happens in some other poison dart frogs. “It’s possible that the female goes back when the tadpole is developing and lays another unfertilised egg, so that the tadpole can eat this to get energy,” says Koch.
The researchers don’t know how big the population of the frogs is, so can’t tell if it is endangered, but in the year between the two surveys, they saw there had been deforestation in the area they searched, which they accessed via a small plane and then an 8-hour boat trip on the river. “As the frog is really specific to this plant in this area, any small disturbance could be dangerous to the species,” says Koch.

Mark Zuckerberg Once Set Up A Facebook Account For Brooklyn Nine-Nine Star Andy Samberg, Then Personally Played Tech Support When Things Went A Bit Haywire
Mark Zuckerberg Once Set Up A Facebook Account For Brooklyn Nine-Nine Star Andy Samberg, Then Personally Played Tech Support When Things Went A Bit Haywire
In a 2014 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, comedian Andy Samberg revealed that Mark Zuckerberg not only persuaded him to join Facebook, now a subsidiary of Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:META), but also personally set up his account and remained his only friend on the platform.
What Happened: Samberg recalled the unusual story when Fallon asked if he was on Facebook. “Well, do we have time for a funny story?” he replied. “I am actually on Facebook, but I only have one friend. It’s a private account and I have one friend.”
When Fallon asked who it was, Samberg answered, “Mark Zuckerberg.”
Trending: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — this is your last chance to become an investor for $0.80 per share.
Samberg said the two had become friendly after Zuckerberg appeared on Saturday Night Live and later invited Samberg to visit Facebook’s offices. During their visit, Zuckerberg was shocked to learn Samberg didn’t use Facebook.
“I said, ‘If you set up my account and you’re my only friend, so I can tell this on a talk show…’ and he agreed,” Samberg said.
But things didn’t go exactly as planned. The “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” actor began receiving emails and friend requests from Zuckerberg’s contacts. “I texted him and was like, ‘Hey man, I hate to do this to you, head of Facebook, but I think I need some tech support here.'”
Zuckerberg responded like any good friend would. “He was so cool about it. He was like, ‘Go into your settings …’” Samberg said. “Of course, it totally worked.”
See Also: The team behind $6B+ in licensing deals is now building the next billion-dollar IP empire — invest early at $2.25/share.
Why It’s Important: This story resurfaced just as Zuckerberg is about to celebrate his 41st birthday this week — a milestone for the tech mogul who turned a dorm-room project into a $1.6 trillion empire.
Over the years, Zuckerberg has faced enormous challenges: government investigations, public distrust over privacy and misinformation, and a risky pivot to the metaverse that drew skepticism across Wall Street.
He’s also been criticized for being robotic or emotionally detached — something he’s acknowledged publicly.
The Meta CEO currently has a net worth of $226 billion, making him the third wealthiest person after Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos in Bloomberg’s Billionaire Index.

Norovirus vaccine pill protects against winter vomiting bug

A norovirus vaccine pill that cuts the risk of infection could be available in a few years, after it showed promise in a trial where people were intentionally exposed to the virus.
The highly contagious virus infects the stomach and intestines, causing vomiting and diarrhoea that typically resolve within a few days. “Billions are lost from the economy globally every year because of the lost days of work and hospitalisation,” says Sarah Caddy at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
Sean Tucker at biotech company Vaxart in San Francisco and his colleagues previously developed an oral vaccine that boosted levels of IgA antibodies that can block norovirus from entering cells, suggesting it could prevent infections.
Now, the researchers have tested this on 141 people aged between 18 and 49, about half of whom took the pill, while the others took a placebo. A month later, all the participants intentionally swallowed a high dose of the GI.1 strain of norovirus in liquid form, while in quarantine. “In the real-world setting, you need 10 to 100 viral particles to be infected, and we use 1 million particles,” says Tucker. This helped to ensure enough people got infected, he says.
In the following week, 82 per cent of those in the placebo group became infected, but only 57 per cent of vaccinated participants did.
“I think most individuals would be interested in taking [the vaccine] if you can reduce your risk by around [25 percentage points] and avoid getting really debilitating symptoms,” says Caddy, who wasn’t involved in the study.
The team also found that vaccinated participants shed substantially less virus in their stool and vomit than those who took the placebo. This suggests the vaccine could slow the spread of the virus, although that needs to be directly tested, says Caddy.
In another analysis, the scientists confirmed that the vaccine probably works by boosting levels of protective IgA antibodies in saliva and in the gut, blood and nose.
However, it is unclear how long this protection would last. Further work is also needed to verify the findings in young children and older adults, who are especially at risk of being hospitalised, says Caddy.
Most noroviruses that infect humans belong to two groups, known as GI and GII. Based on unpublished work by his team, the GI.1 vaccine would probably protect against other closely related GI variants, says Tucker. The team is also developing a vaccine that can protect against GI and GII viruses.
If all goes well, Tucker hopes the GI.1 vaccine could be rolled out in two to three years.

Jay writes: “The publisher argues that while Captain Blood might rate as a 4/10 today, it would’ve scored a 7.5/10 back in the mid-2000s. But let’s be honest—even if this game had launched on its original schedule, it would’ve still been panned. Broken mechanics don’t magically become acceptable just because they’re old. Elon Musk’s America PAC didn’t keep its promise to pay swing state voters who signed a pro-Trump petition ahead of the 2024 election, and who enlisted others to do the same, a new lawsuit alleges.
The case, a proposed national class action suit, was filed within the last week in a federal court in the Eastern district of Pennsylvania, a state that was viewed as critical to Donald Trump’s effort to return to the White House.
A related case was filed in April that only applied to residents of Pennsylvania.
Lead plaintiffs are three people who participated in the America PAC initiative while they were living in Pennsylvania, Nevada and Georgia. One formally worked as a canvasser for America PAC in Michigan and in Georgia, the complaint says.
In his efforts to propel Trump to victory, Musk spent around $300 million while also stumping at rallies and online for his preferred candidate. Musk, the world’s wealthiest person, had offered payments — initially $47 and later $100 — to those who signed a petition supporting his pro-Trump PAC. Additional payments were offered for each eligible person they referred who signed the petition.
Musk said the petitions showed support for the First Amendment and Second Amendment. The PAC viewed the awards as a way to drive voter registration and turnout in swing states.
The complaint says the plaintiffs are “in communication with numerous others who referred voters to sign the America PAC petition, who are likewise frustrated that they did not receive full payments for their referrals.” The group, represented by the law firm Lichten & Liss-Riordan, expects there to be “more than 100 Class Members,” with payments owed them “expected to exceed $5,000,000,” the filing says.
“This case is about a broken promise: Elon Musk promised supporters that they would be paid for signing a petition and referring others to do the same,” Shannon Liss-Riordan, co-founder of the firm, said in an email. “Our clients relied on that promise because they believed in Elon, but unfortunately, that promise was not kept. It appears the promise was broken for many others as well.”
In October, as Election Day neared, Musk and his committee began offering lottery-like awards of $1 million per day to registered voters in swing states who had signed. The scheme raised legal concerns, with lawmakers calling for the Department of Justice to investigate the initiatives for possible violations of election law.
Musk said at a pro-Trump town hall event in Harrisburg Pennsylvania that, “I think think is kind of fun, and you know, it seems like a good use of money basically.”
Following Trump’s victory, Musk was tapped to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), tasked with slashing the size of the federal government. In that role, he’s been able to eliminate regulations and cut agency resources in ways that benefit his companies, including Tesla and SpaceX.
A spokesperson for America PAC didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Musk also didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
America PAC told CNN last month, regarding a related lawsuit, that the group “is committed to paying for every legitimate petition signer, which is evidenced by the fact that we have paid tens of millions of dollars to canvassers for their hard work in support of our mission.”
Lichten & Liss-Riordan represents more than 2,000 former Twitter employees in a variety of suits and in arbitration against Musk’s social media business, now part of xAI. The employees worked for Twitter during Musk’s buyout of the company in 2022, and were enticed to stay with severance payment offers, but said they didn’t receive the promised payments.

Investors should consider getting bullish on Advanced Micro Devices following a slew of positive headlines surrounding the name, according to Scott Nations, president of Nations Indexes. Nations joined CNBC’s ” Power Lunch ” on Wednesday to discuss this and two more of the trading day’s biggest stock stories, and whether investors should take up or sell shares of those names. Advanced Micro Devices The artificial intelligence chip company gained more than 4% on Wednesday after it said that its board of directors approved $6 billion in share buybacks . AMD 1D mountain AMD, 1-day Nations deemed AMD as a “buy,” pointing out that President Donald Trump is planning to revoke U.S. chip export restrictions , which “is going to be good for the whole space.” He also called AMD the “second-best play,” as the company as well as Nvidia scored deals this week with Saudi company Humain to help expand its AI infrastructure. “If you want to be in the AI space, you get to buy this name at a 35% discount to its 52-week high,” Nations said. Shares of AMD are up nearly 25% over the past month, but still off more than 2% in 2025. AbbVie Shares of biotech company AbbVie pulled back more than 5% in Wednesday’s session. ABBV 1D mountain ABBV, 1-day On Wednesday, Citi downgraded the stock to neutral from buy and trimmed its price target by $5 to $205 a share, which implies more than 15% upside. Analyst Geoff Meacham thinks that the company’s constant “beat and raise” trend with its quarterly results could suggest a lightness in its late-stage product development pipeline when compared to its peers. “While current fundamentals are solid, we suspect that the share impact from quarterly surprises could diminish going forward, especially as investors increasingly shift more focus to the pipeline,” Meacham wrote in a note to clients. Nations doesn’t concur with that stance, however, saying the downgrade is “really goofy” and still regarding AbbVie as a “buy.” “The pipeline is critical for any pharma company, but this company beats on earnings expectations consistently, it raises dividends, has [a] nice dividend yield [at] 3.5%,” he continued. “It’s in a good space.” In the past three months, the stock has slid 8%. Tesla Tesla was up 4% Wednesday after Reuters, which cited a person with direct knowledge of the matter, reported that the electric vehicle maker will begin shipping components for its Cybercab and Semi trucks from China to the U.S. at the end of the month. That follows the U.S. and China earlier this week agreeing to temporarily cut tariffs on each other’s goods for 90 days. The agreement came as the automaker has seen a decline in its China sales while facing increasing competition from local automakers in that country. “I think Tesla right now is a hold,” Nations also said. “It’s good that they’re going to resume importing parts from China, but remember, there’s still a pretty big, hefty tariff in place for ******** imports. The potential exists that in about 85 days, that tariff is going to increase, maybe as much as triple.” TSLA 1D mountain TSLA, 1-day While shares have soared nearly 26% in the past week, but they’re still negative this year, declining about 14% in the *******.

White House considers Plan B as DOGE cuts hit a wall on the Hill
White House considers Plan B as DOGE cuts hit a wall on the Hill
Running out of options to get their DOGE cuts approved by Congress, the White House is now looking at a two-year runway to get the cuts passed and opening the door to launching a court fight over the president’s power to shut down spending on his own.
President Donald Trumpinitially wanted Congress to approve a formal rescissions package that would claw back about $9 billion in previously approved federal spending, a vote that would give legislative teeth to some of the cuts DOGE has already made. The package would include major cuts to USAID and public broadcasting like NPR and PBS.
That effort is hitting a dead end on Capitol Hill, with Republicans warning the White House that it faces tough odds in their so-called megabill, even though it requires just a simple majority of 50 Republican votes in the Senate, with Vice President JD Vance breaking the tie.
The White House is recognizing that reality and is giving itself a much longer timeline to codify DOGE cuts while leaving open the option of challenging the Impoundments Act, the 1974 law that limits a president’s ability to withhold funds appropriated by Congress. Trump’s allies have argued the president already has authority to withhold spending but it would likely be up to the courts to decide, given that the Constitution gives Congress the power of the purse.
“The focus right now is the reconciliation bill,” said a White House official granted anonymity to speak freely. “I think there’s an appetite within Capitol Hill, within the two years that we have to codify the work of DOGE. The procedures of Capitol Hill may not allow for it to happen now but it doesn’t mean it won’t happen later.”
Several GOP senators expressed deep reservations about codifying DOGE cuts as the White House wants.
“I think they don’t want to lose the vote, so I think they may be concerned about the sensibility,” Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), who supports the rescissions effort, told West Wing Playbook.
Other Republicans were more blunt. “I don’t know that we should be taking our limited legislative time to look at that,” said Sen. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.). “I don’t think legislation is called for.”
In 2018, during Trump’s first term, the Senate narrowly rejected a $15 billion rescissions package. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) was one of two Republicans to vote no. “I don’t like tipping the power of the purse to the executive branch,” she said then.
Now, Collins – who has more power as chair of the Appropriations Committee – is warning she won’t support any effort that cuts global women’s health programs or PEPFAR. “I don’t see those passing,” she told the Washington Post.
The congressional cold shoulder has major implications for the future of DOGE.
Although the department has claimed more than $160 billion in savings, most of those cuts are unilateral, and potentially reversible executive actions. With both Congress and the courts unwilling to provide legal backing, the administration is running out of ways to ensure its reductions hold, raising the risk that DOGE’s sweeping disruption may leave little lasting impact.
“The cuts won’t be real or lasting unless Congress votes on it,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said. Paul and other fiscal hawks have urged the White House to go *******, not smaller.
The rescission package’s “$9 billion is a pittance,” he said. “It’s a rounding error and it should only be the beginning. If they’re not going to send us the $9 billion, it sends a really bad signal to anybody that is fiscally responsible that there’s going to be no change from doing things the way that they’ve always been done.”
Complicating matters further, Republicans earlier this year were hoping to use DOGE savings to partially offset the cost of extending the Trump tax cuts. But the rules governing the process the GOP is using to enact the megabill doesn’t allow for cuts to discretionary spending – where most of the DOGE cuts were made.
With few viable paths in Congress, the White House may now pivot to the courts.
“I think they probably want to challenge the Impoundment Act is my sense,” Hawley said. A legal fight over that statute, if successful, could open the door for a broader showdown over Trump’s executive power.
The White House has already expressed an openness to unilaterally freezing money approved by Congress.
“Obviously, we have never taken impoundment off the table, because the president and myself believe that 200 years of the president and executive branch had that ability,” an OMB official said on a call with reporters last week.
Asked today if Trump would use impoundment authority to withhold funding, the White House official said, “All options are on the table.”
“We’ve been able to achieve what we’ve been able to achieve without going down that path but that’s not to say we wouldn’t consider using it if the situation called for it,” the person said.

Putin will not attend Ukraine peace talks in Turkey
Putin will not attend Ukraine peace talks in Turkey
Russian President Vladimir Putin will not travel to Turkey for peace talks on the war in Ukraine, despite calls from Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky for him to attend.
Russia’s delegation at Thursday’s talks in Istanbul will instead be headed by presidential aide Vladimir Medinksy, according to a Kremlin statement.
Zelensky had previously said he would attend the talks and meet Putin in person if the Russian president agreed, and said he would do everything he could to ensure the face-to-face meeting took place.
The Ukrainian president will be in the Turkish capital Ankara on Thursday to meet President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Putin and Zelensky have not met in person since December 2019. Russia and Ukraine last held direct negotiations in March 2022 in Istanbul, shortly after Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of its neighbour.
Fighting has raged in Ukraine since then. Russian forces have slowly expanded the amount of territory they control over the past year, mostly in the east of Ukraine.
Putin had initially called for direct talks between Russia and Ukraine in Turkey’s largest city “without pre-conditions”, before Zelensky announced that he would go in person and expected the Russian president to travel as well.
Earlier on Wednesday, Donald Trump floated the possibility of joining the meeting himself if Putin did.
The US president, who is currently in Qatar, told reporters he did not know if his Russian counterpart would attend “if I’m not there”.
“I know he would like me to be there, and that’s a possibility. If we could end the war, I’d be thinking about that,” Trump said.
The US is expected to send a high-level delegation to the talks, including the country’s top diplomat Marco Rubio.
Since returning to the White House, President Trump has sought to broker a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

Donald Trump, Boeing, Qatar Airways strike $145 billion jet deal in Qatar during Middle East tour
Donald Trump, Boeing, Qatar Airways strike $145 billion jet deal in Qatar during Middle East tour
Boeing and Qatar Airways on Wednesday announced a deal for the Middle Eastern airline to buy up to 210 jets, notching the US plane maker’s largest-ever order of wide-body aircraft.
The “historic” order — the biggest in Qatar Airways’ history — includes 130 of Boeing’s 787 Dreamliners and 30 of its much-delayed 777-9s, with options for up to 50 more planes, the companies said in press release.
Qatar Airways also signed an agreement with GE Aerospace for more than 400 engines to power the Boeing planes, those companies said in another joint release.
The purchase of wide-body aircraft engines is the largest in GE Aerospace’s history, according to the release.
Boeing and Qatar Airways struck the agreement during US President Donald Trump’s state visit with the emir of Qatar, part of the president’s four-day tour of the Middle East.
Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg appeared alongside Mr Trump at the Amiri Diwan in Doha for the signing ceremony.
“This is a critical next step for Qatar Airways on our path as we invest in the cleanest, youngest and most efficient fleet in global aviation,” Qatar Airways CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer said in a statement.
“This is so we can meet the strong demand in the airline as we seamlessly connect passengers to the world better than anyone.”
Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Stephanie Pope said the “record-breaking order” with Qatar Airways “solidifies their future fleet with our market-leading wide-body airplane family at its centre.”
The 426-seat, twin-engine 777-9 is part of Boeing’s 777X series, which has yet to produce any deliveries and has still not been certified by the Federal Aviation Administration.
The White House earlier Wednesday valued the plane deal at $US96 billion ($145 billion), and said it will support 154,000 US jobs annually and more than one million domestic jobs in total.
Boeing and Qatar Airways, however, said the deal will result in roughly 400,000 jobs in the US.
Boeing’s website says it currently employs around 170,000 people globally.
“It’s the largest order of jets in the history of Boeing,” Mr Trump said after Mr Ortberg signed the agreement at the Amiri Diwan.
The deal could be a boon for Boeing, which has not posted a profit since 2018.
The plane maker has been beset by major safety concerns, manufacturing defects, cost overruns and a nearly two-month-long machinist strike last year.
Its business dealings have also been disrupted by Mr Trump’s trade war. China stopped accepting deliveries of Boeing planes to its airlines in response to US tariffs, Mr Ortberg said last month.
But the company has recently narrowed its losses as it addresses a backlog worth more than $500 billion, Mr Ortberg said in Boeing’s first-quarter earnings call.
“This is great news for South Carolina and Boeing,” said Senator Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., calling the deal “a gamechanger.”
Mr Graham’s office said the new planes will be assembled at Boeing’s Charleston facility.
The deal announced Wednesday would nearly double Qatar Airways’ fleet of 233 aircraft, according to its website.
It could also draw more scrutiny toward Mr Trump’s acceptance, and defence, of Qatar’s offer to gift the US a luxury 747 jet that will act as the new Air Force One.
Democrats have blasted the move as corrupt and unconstitutional, and some of Mr Trump’s Republican allies in government and media have also expressed unease.

Court clerk in Murdaugh ******* trial charged with showing sealed photographs, perjury
Court clerk in Murdaugh ******* trial charged with showing sealed photographs, perjury
COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The former court clerk in South Carolina who helped with the trial of attorney Alex Murdaugh, a powerful, wealthy lawyer convicted of killing his wife and son, showed sealed court exhibits to a reporter and then lied about it, authorities said Wednesday.
In all, former Colleton County Clerk of Court Becky Hill was arrested on four charges. She faces obstruction of justice and perjury for showing a reporter photographs that were sealed court exhibits and then lying about it, according to court documents. Sealed exhibits are only for viewing by the jury, lawyers in the case, and court workers.
She also faces two counts of misconduct in office for taking bonuses and promoting through her public office a book she wrote on the trial, according to the warrants.
Hill, 57, was released on bail after court appearances in Colleton County and Richland County. Her lawyers didn’t immediately respond to a message seeking comment.
“She lives here. She turned herself in. We found out about these charges last night,” Hill’s attorney Will Lewis said during her appearance in Colleton County court, according to a livestream of the hearing by WCIV-TV.
Hill was in charge of taking care of the jury, overseeing exhibits and helping the judge during Murdaugh’s six-week trial in 2023 when he was convicted of killing his wife and younger son. The case involved power, danger, money and privilege and an attorney whose family had lorded over his small South Carolina county for nearly a century.
Murdaugh is appealing his conviction and a sentence of life without parole, in part accusing Hill of trying to influence jurors to vote ‘guilty’ and being biased against Murdaugh for her book. Murdaugh is also serving a separate sentence of decades in prison for admitting to stealing millions of dollars from settlements for clients who suffered horrible injuries or deaths — and from his family’s law firm.
An initial appeal by Murdaugh’s lawyers was denied, but Judge Jean Toal said she wasn’t sure Hill told the truth about her dealings with jurors and was “attracted by the siren call of celebrity” status.
Some of Hill’s charges concern Murdaugh’s ******* trial. The arrest warrant said Hill violated a judge’s order to keep sealed photographs from the public. A second warrant said Hill lied to Toal during a January 2024 hearing when the judge asked: “Did you allow anyone from the press to view the sealed exhibits?”
The documents do not specify who Hill is accused of showing the photos to.
Murdaugh’s lawyers, ***** Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, said they weren’t surprised by Hill’s arrest.
“We have long raised our concerns about her conduct during and after the trial and this arrest further underscores the need to protect the integrity of the judicial process. Every defendant is entitled to a fair and impartial trial and we look forward to Alex Murdaugh finally getting that fair treatment,” their statement said.
One of the charges — misconduct in office — involves money that investigators said Hill took for herself. They said that included nearly $10,000 meant for bonuses from federal money meant to improve child support collection and about $2,000 in money from the Clerk of Court’s office.
The warrant on the other misconduct charge said Hill used her public role as clerk of court to promote her book on the Murdaugh trial on social media.
All four charges are felonies. Hill faces up to five years in prison if convicted of perjury, There are no limits on the sentences for the other charges.
Hill was also accused last May of 76 counts of ethics violations. Officials said Hill allowed a photo of Murdaugh in a holding cell to be taken to promote her book on the trial and used county money to buy dozens of lunches for her staff, prosecutors and a vendor.
Hill also struck a deal with a documentary maker to use the county courtroom in exchange for promoting her book on the trial, which later she admitted had plagiarized passages, according to the South Carolina Ethics Commission complaint.
Hill resigned in March 2024 during the last year of her four year term, citing the public scrutiny of Murdaugh’s trial and wanting to spend time with her grandchildren.
