  5. Macs are getting their first official gaming keyboard Macs are getting their first official gaming keyboard I never thought I’d see the day. Apple is making a gaming keyboard for the Mac. Well, technically, the keyboard is made by Corsair, but it’s an officially licensed peripheral, fit with Apple’s unique colorways, that’s geared toward Mac gaming. Corsair is bringing the K65 Plus keyboard and M75 wireless mouse to the Mac with two different ****** options. You can choose between Glacier Blue or Frost, both of which match up with the new iMac M4 — and the older iMac M3, for that matter. Both of these peripherals have already been released, and you can use them with a Mac. But the updated variants come with these specific ****** options, as well as Mac legends on the keyboard. Apple isn’t just teaming up with Corsair to release these peripherals, either. The Glacier Blue option will be sold exclusively in Apple stores, and it’s a limited-edition run. The Frost option, meanwhile, will only be sold online, first through Apple, and eventually through Corsair. At the moment, Corsair says the keyboard and mouse combo will come to its website “at a later date.” Corsair Although I haven’t seen these Apple versions in the flesh, I’ve used the K65 previously, and it’s a surprisingly competent gaming keyboard. It comes with a comfortable 75% layout, fully mechanical keys, and hot-swappable switches, allowing you to completely change the sound and feel of the keyboard. It also includes board foam, which goes a long way toward cleaning up the sound. Apple is finally digging into gaming keyboards, and thankfully, it’s not settling for a subpar base. Get your weekly teardown of the tech behind PC gaming The keyboard and mouse remain mostly unchanged compared to their non-Apple counterparts. The biggest difference is the ******, but Corsair also defaults to the Mac layout on the keyboard out of the box (it still supports Windows through a toggle) and it has a new version of the iCue app that will show your peripherals with the proper colors. In addition to macOS, Corsair says the keyboard will work with iPadOS as well. Corsair and Apple are charging a bit of a premium, at least for the K65. It comes in at $180, which is $20 more expensive than the regular version — and again, nothing is different outside of the ******. The M75 ******** unchanged, clocking in at $130. 6. Russian gains accelerate as Ukraine’s Kursk gamble falters Russian gains accelerate as Ukraine’s Kursk gamble falters Getty Images The Russian military is accelerating its gains along the front line in Ukraine at a crucial time for the conflict. Data from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) shows that Russia has gained almost six times as much territory in 2024 as it did in 2023, and is advancing towards key Ukrainian logistical hubs in the eastern Donbas region. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s surprise incursion into Russia’s Kursk region is faltering. Russian troops have pushed Kyiv’s offensive backwards. Experts have questioned the success of the offensive, with one calling it a “strategic catastrophe” given manpower shortages faced by Ukraine. These developments come at a time of heightened uncertainty with a second Donald Trump administration looming. The US president-elect has vowed to bring the war to a close when he takes office in January, with some fearing he could cut future military aid to Ukraine. Russia advances in eastern Ukraine In the first few months of the war the front line moved quickly, with Russia gaining ground quickly before being pushed back by a Ukrainian counteroffensive. But in 2023 neither side made any major gains – with the conflict largely sliding into a stalemate. But new figures from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) suggest that the story in 2024 is more favourable for Russia. The ISW bases its analysis on confirmed social media footage and reports of troop movements. The ISW data shows Moscow’s forces have seized around 2,700 sq km of Ukrainian territory so far this year, compared with just 465 sq km in the whole of 2023, a near six-fold increase. Dr Marina Miron, a defence researcher at Kings College London, suggested to the BBC that there was a possibility the Ukrainian eastern front “might actually collapse” if Russia continues to advance at pace. More than 1000 sq km was taken between 1 September and 3 November, suggesting that the push has accelerated in recent months. Two areas bearing the brunt of these advances are Kupiansk in Kharkiv region, and Kurakhove, a stepping stone to the key logistical hub of Pokrovsk in Donetsk region. The ISW suggests that Russian forces have steadily advanced in eastern Ukraine. Kupiansk and areas to the east of the Oskil river were liberated in the Kharkiv offensive of 2022, but Russia has progressively retaken the latter area. In a recent intelligence update, the ***’s Ministry of Defence said that Russian forces were trying to breach the north-eastern outskirts of the city. Footage posted on 13 November, and verified by the BBC is consistent with this analysis. The video shows a convoy of Russian armour being repelled after making it to within 4km of the key bridge at Kupiansk, the last major road crossing in the area. While these reports do not necessarily translate to control of an area, it is indicative of how stretched Ukraine’s defensive line has become. Elsewhere, since retaking the city of Vuhledar in October – an elevated position which sits above key supply lines and which Moscow spent two years fighting for – Russia has thrown resources at Kurakhove. Ukraine’s forces defending the city have so far repelled attacks to the south and east. But the front line creeps ever closer, with Russia also threatening to encircle defenders from the north and west. Col Yevgeny Sasyko, a former head of strategic communications with Ukraine’s general staff, said Russia places “powerful jaws” around the flanks of a city that slowly “grind though” defences until they collapse. Footage from the city verified by the BBC showed massive destruction, with residential buildings heavily damaged. The ISW concludes Moscow now holds a total of 110,649 sq km in Ukraine. For comparison, Ukrainian forces seized just over 1,171 sq km in the first month of its incursion into Kursk – though Russian forces have now retaken nearly half of that territory. Despite its territorial gains, Russia’s advance has come at a huge cost. An analysis carried out by BBC Russian confirmed that at least 78,329 troops have been ******* since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022, with Moscow’s losses from September to November this year more than one-and-a-half times greater than the same ******* in 2023. The losses are compounded by the “meat grinder” approach said to be favoured by Russian commanders – describing the waves of recruits thrown towards Ukrainian positions in a bid to exhaust troops. Despite the Russian advances, some experts have noted that the actual speed of the offensive is still slow. David Handelman, a military analyst, suggested Ukrainian troops in the east were slowly withdrawing to preserve manpower and resources, rather than suffering from a broader collapse. The Kursk gambit Ukraine launched its shock incursion into Russia’s Kursk region in August. It is unclear why Russia took so long to respond to the operation, which saw Kyiv’s troops quickly gain control over a number of border communities. Dr Miron suggested that while the Kremlin would suffer a domestic political cost for as long as the incursion continued, Russia’s general staff had been keen to keep Ukraine’s forces tied down in Kursk as its forces made gains elsewhere along the front line. But Moscow is now clearly intent on reclaiming the territory lost on its own soil. Some 50,000 troops have been deployed to the region. Verified videos from the Kursk region show fierce fighting is taking place – and that Russia is suffering considerable losses in terms of manpower and equipment. But the data clearly shows Ukraine’s control of the region is shrinking. Since the start of October, Russian counter-attacks have regained some 593 sq km worth of territory in the border region, ISW figures showed. In Kursk, the ISW suggests Russia has steadily won back territory. The Kursk incursion was initially a major boon for Ukraine in terms of morale at a time of serious setbacks, and the audacity of the operation was a reminder of its ability to surprise and harm its ******. But Dr Miron said while the Kursk incursion was a moment of “tactical brilliance” it has also been a “strategic catastrophe” for Ukraine. “The whole idea was to maybe gain some political leverage in potential negotiations, but militarily to draw the Russian forces away from the Donbas in order to liberate Kursk. And what we’re seeing instead is that Ukrainian units are tied down there.” Some of Kyiv’s most experienced and effective units are known to be fighting in Kursk. Mechanised units equipped with state-of-the-art Western armour are also involved in the offensive. Ukrainian leaders had hinted that they hoped the incursion would force Moscow to redirect some of its forces from eastern Ukraine, slowing the Russian advance there. Instead, experts say most reinforcements were moved to Kursk from parts in Ukraine where the fighting is not as intense. “According to Ukrainian soldiers from different parts of the front, the Russian troops reinforcing Kursk were mainly pulled from Kherson and Zaporizhzhia,” Yurri Clavilier, a land analyst with the International Institute for Strategic Studies, told the BBC. “The fighting there is not as intense as it is in the East. Some Russian units attacking Kharkiv were also redirected to Kursk as Ukraine managed to stall the Russian onslaught there,” he added. The importance of territory to both sides is the strength it lends to their position in any potential negotiations. Although no peace negotiations have been discussed, US President-elect Trump has claimed he could end the war within 24 hours, without saying exactly how. On Tuesday, Ukraine fired US-supplied long-range missiles into Russia for the first time – a day after Washington gave it permission to do so. It is thought that the decision was made in part to help Ukraine hold on to part of the Kursk region, to use as a bargaining chip in future negotiations. But Dr Miron told the BBC that Russia’s advance has handed them a stronger negotiating position as Trump’s new foreign policy team prepare to take office. “What they’re controlling right now, it does give them a certain advantage” she said. “If it came to negotiations, I’m sure that as the Russian side has been stressing, ‘we will do it based on the battlefield configuration’.” “From a Russian perspective, they have much better cards than the Ukrainians.” Additional reporting by Alex Murray. 8. LG just launched its fastest OLED monitor yet LG just launched its fastest OLED monitor yet LG LG is coming out with the fastest OLED gaming monitor it has ever released. The new UltraGear GX7 is a 1440p monitor packing a WOLED display from LG Display, and it clocks a blistering 480Hz refresh rate that’s worthy of a slot among the best gaming monitors. We’ve seen these specs before, just not from LG. Earlier this year, we got the Sony InZone M10S and the Asus ROG Swift PG27AQDP, both of which use the same 1440p panel with a 480Hz refresh rate. LG’s offering is interesting compared to the Sony competition, however, as the UltraGear GX7 comes in at $1,000 — $100 less than the InZone M10S. Moreover, LG is including a DisplayPort 2.1 connection to ensure compatibility with “next-generation GPUs expected to launch in early 2025,” as LG’s press release reads. We’ve known for a while that Nvidia’s RTX 50-series and AMD’s RDNA 4 GPUs are expected to arrive early next year, but the DisplayPort 2.1 note is something we haven’t heard yet. Get your weekly teardown of the tech behind PC gaming Up to this point, only Sony has included the new standard on its 1440p, 480Hz OLED — the PG27AQDP, which also comes in at $1,000, tops out at DisplayPort 2.1. Between the lower price compared to Sony and higher DisplayPort standard compared to Asus, LG may have the best version of this panel we’ve seen yet. Acer also has a take on this panel, though it has yet to actually release. Although LG has technically launched a 480Hz OLED with its unique UltraGear Dual Mode OLED, this is the first 1440p offering we’ve seen from the company at that high of a refresh rate. As we’ve seen from other monitors packing this panel, OLED is able to capitalize on such a high refresh rate, cleanly beating the motion clarity of competitive esports displays like the Alienware 500Hz gaming monitor. LG currently has the , which goes until December 22. However, the company is offering a holiday promotion for a free $200 prepaid MasterCard for eligible UltraGear monitor purchases, including the new GX7. That brings the price down to less than $800 for the next month, cleanly beating the options from both Asus and Sony. 9. Gisèle Pelicot condemns ***** accused and says French society must change Gisèle Pelicot condemns ***** accused and says French society must change Reuters Gisèle Pelicot faced combative questions from defence lawyers on her final day of evidence Gisèle Pelicot has denounced the mass ***** case of 51 men as a “trial of cowardice”, and said it is high time that France’s “macho, patriarchal society” which “trivialises *****” changes. Her ex-husband, Dominique Pelicot, has admitted recruiting dozens of men online to ***** her while she was drugged and unconscious over the course of almost a decade at their home in Mazan. During a dramatic day in court there was uproar when a defence lawyer accused her of still being under her ex-husband’s control and of being unable to condemn him fully. Ms Pelicot has attended the mass ***** trial from its start in September. She has waived her right to anonymity so the entire trial can be heard in court in Avignon in the full glare of publicity. The case has not just shocked France, it has attracted interest from around the world. It has highlighted the issue of *****-induced ******* ******** and raised questions about whether consent should become part of the French definition of *****. Warning: Some of the details in this report are graphic from the start Tuesday’s session was the last chance that lawyers for the men on trial for ***** might have to convince the judges that her ex-husband Dominique Pelicot had somehow tricked them into ******* her while she was unconscious. About 15 defendants sat in the defendants’ box while Dominique Pelicot sat in another box, resting his ***** on his hand. A handful of the 50 admit ******* Gisèle Pelicot, but the majority do not. Dominique Pelicot was asked whether he accepted that he had manipulated the other defendants into ******* his wife or if he had drugged them, he said firmly: “Absolutely not.” He suggested they had used that defence “to save themselves”. Gisèle Pelicot’s lawyer also asked him what he had to say to his family, especially his daughter Caroline. Partially ****** images of Caroline were found on Dominique Pelicot’s laptop, and when asked about the file he had called “my ****** daughter”, he addressed her across the room: “I have watched her fall apart… Caroline, I never touched you.” She shouted across the court: “You are lying; I am ***** of your *****, you’re alone in your lie, you will **** lying.” There was complete silence as they looked at each other and Dominique Pelicot then held his head in his hands. The rest of the family, their faces filled with anguish, stared at him, while Gisèle Pelicot herself did not react. Benoit PEYRUCQ/AFP Dominique Pelicot admits drugging his wife and recruiting dozens of strangers online to ***** her while she was drugged Not long before Ms Pelicot took the stand, the last of the 50 defendants, Philippe L, said he had been “surprised” by the situation when Dominique Pelicot had welcomed him into his home and insisted that he penetrate Gisèle Pelicot. He also denies *****, arguing he put his conscience aside and “was thinking with my ****** instead of my brain”. After Philippe L left the dock, Ms Pelicot told the court that by giving up her right to a trial behind closed doors she “knew what I was signing up for”, although she conceded “today I can feel the tiredness”. Asked whether she thought there was a difference between those who had admitted to ******* her and those who had not, Ms Pelicot said that “all came to ***** me… all committed a ******”. But she emphasised that when the accused had admitted to ***** in the dock “I looked them in the eye”. “I’ve seen individuals who deny ***** parade before the court,” she said. “I want to tell these men: at which moment when you enter that bedroom did Ms Pelicot give you consent?” “I’ve heard ‘I was manipulated’, I’ve heard ‘I drank a glass of water, I was drugged’. But at what point did they not realise?” Ms Pelicot was also asked why she continued to use her ex-husband’s name when her own children had been using other names. The room was hushed as she responded calmly that when she had first gone into the court in Avignon her children were ashamed of the name, but that her grandchildren were still called Pelicot. “Today I want them to be proud of their grandmother,” she declared. “My name is known across the world now. They shouldn’t be ashamed of carrying that name. Today we will remember Gisèle Pelicot.” Reuters Defence lawyer Nadia El-Bouroumi clashed in court with Gisèle Pelicot’s legal team The atmosphere in the courtroom became heated when Ms Pelicot was questioned by defence lawyer Nadia El-Bouroumi, who suggested she had used “harsh words” towards the other defendants, but not her husband. “Looking at you – and I’m sorry to say this – I wondered whether we’d ever see you cry,” El-Bouroumi asked at one point. The lawyer’s combative and sometimes aggressive tone elicited gasps from the public and the media inside the courtroom, and several people shook their heads in disbelief. Ms Pelicot rejected suggestions that looking back she might have “seen the signs” that something might not have been right on the mornings after being drugged: “I would wake up with my usual pyjamas on, so no.” She spoke of losing 10 years of her life through medical worries caused by the drugs her former husband had given her without her knowledge. “I thought I’d either **** or end up in a mental hospital,” she reflected. “I am 72 now and I don’t know how much time I have left.” Defence lawyers also asked her about the images on Dominique Pelicot’s laptop of their daughter Caroline. The Pelicots’ children then stormed out of the courtroom and did not come back for some time, while Gisèle Pelicot said later that it “isn’t a family trial”. When a defence lawyer put it to Ms Pelicot that she was still under her ex-husband’s control and could not bring herself to condemn him fully, she stood silently in court as the lawyers from both sides shouted at each other. The presiding judge had to intervene to bring the argument to an end. CHRISTOPHE SIMON/AFP Caroline Darian stormed out of the court with her two brothers when defence lawyers discussed partially ****** pictures of her found on her father’s computer Later in the day the court heard a statement from Dominique Pelicot given to police in November 2020, two months after he was caught filming under women’s skirts by a supermarket security guard. That eventually led police to find thousands of videos that he had filmed of men having **** with his wife while she was unconscious. She had no idea of what had gone on and realised he had been drugging her from 2011 to 2020. The trial is due to wind up next month with a verdict in the second half of December. 10. Will Smith’s $140 Million Game is Such a Massive Flop He Should Never Ever Set Foot in the Gaming Industry Again Will Smith’s $140 Million Game is Such a Massive Flop He Should Never Ever Set Foot in the Gaming Industry Again Will Smith is an actor who has been leading Hollywood for almost 30 years now and is still not slowing down with new projects. The actor has given us some highly-rated franchises such as Men in ****** and Bad Boys. He’s been a central figure in many acclaimed films and even won an Oscar for his performance in 2021’s King Richard. Jaden Christopher Syre Smith (left) and Will Smith star in Columbia Pictures drama The Pursuit of Happiness. Photo Credit: Zade Rosenthal You’ll be shocked to know, but at some point, Smith tried to ***** into the world of gaming by endorsing the survival zombie apocalypse title Undawn, where he played the lead character. Unfortunately, the game turned out to be a massive disaster and the biggest stain in Smith’s entire career. Will Smith’s Undawn Was The Biggest ******** of the Gaming Industry Undawn ******* to impress the gaming community due to its boring gameplay. (Image via Tencent) Developed by Tencent, Undawn is a PC and mobile title that debuted back in June 2023. Set in a post-apocalyptic world, gamers must navigate through the dark streets while adapting to their new environment. Along the way, players must face off against hostiles in the form of zombies and other creatures they must ****** down. However, since the game’s release, it’s been bashed by the gaming community for being yet another unoriginal idea that ******* to bring anything to the table. Despite the fact that it featured one of the biggest actors in Hollywood, Will Smith, the game still flopped hard. Undawn proved to be a massive financial disaster for Tencent. According to Reuters, the game had more than 300 developers working on it and a massive budget of 1 billion yuan (around $140 million). Even after investing all those resources, Tencent managed to pull in just $287,000 in revenue for the game. That’s just 0.2% of the title’s reported budget in a span of eight months. To put things into perspective, it was reported that Christopher Nolan’s 2023 smash-hit Oppenheimer had an overall budget of $100 million, which makes Undawn even more expensive than an Oscar-winning movie. Undawn‘s ******** should be a big lesson for Smith to not associate himself with projects that are destined to be a bust from the right go. Maybe he could even learn a thing or two from Henry Cavill and explore the world of gaming with top developers and franchises. Can We See Will Smith in a Grand Theft Auto Movie? One fan has made a Grand Theft Auto movie concept trailer featuring the Hollywood actor. (Image via Rockstar Games) In the decades since the debut of the first title in 1997, Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto franchise has become one of the most successful video game franchises of all time. GTA was and continues to be, a massive success, and the next chapter of the franchise is all set to release next year. Despite the series’ success, we haven’t received a Grand Theft Auto movie. However, some fans have taken things upon themselves. Multiverse of Movies has pushed out an AI-generated Grand Theft Auto movie concept trailer, bringing Smith as CJ and Jackson as Officer Tenpenny, both of who were major figures in 2005’s Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Even though the trailer brings an emotionless AI version of Smith’s voice, it teases a star-packed film bringing in iconic actors such as Idris Elba, Rock, Woody Harrelson, Ving Rhames, and many others. Grand Theft Auto isn’t a game that can easily be adapted like 2023’s The Last of Us and 2024’s Fallout. A lot of development needs to go into such a project, but the AI trailer above does suggest a potential path. Getting big names such as Smith and Rock would be a crucial GTA movie. If Smith finally decides to return to the gaming industry, this should be the most obvious project for him to tackle. With that said, do you think Undawn is the biggest ******** in Smith’s career? Let us know in the comments below. Source link #Smiths #Million #Game #Massive #Flop #Set #Foot #Gaming #Industry Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  11. Mistral’s open-source alternative to ChatGPT just got serious Mistral’s open-source alternative to ChatGPT just got serious Andrew Tarantola / Mistral French AI startup Mistral announced Monday that it is incorporating a half-dozen new features and capabilities into its free generative AI work assistant, dubbed le Chat (French for “the cat”), that will put the open-source chatbot on par with leading frontier models from OpenAI and Anthropic. Le Chat can now search the web and provide cited sources, similar to what Perplexity and SearchGPT both offer. Mistral’s chatbot now also offers a Canvas feature akin to Claude’s Artifacts where users can modify and edit content and code. What’s more, le Chat can now generate images thanks to an integration with ****** Forest Labs’ Flux Pro, the same image generator that powers Grok-2’s capabilities. Beyond that, le Chat can now analyze and summarize the contents of large PDF files, including any graphs and equations. The company is even rolling out AI “agents,” beating OpenAI to the punch, which can automate workflows for repetitive tasks and be shared among a company’s employees. Many of these features are only made possible by Mistral’s new model, the 128B-parameter Pixtral Large. Built atop Mistral Large 2, this frontier model offers a 128k prompt window and state-of-the-art performance on a number of industry benchmarks, including MathVista, DocVQA, and VQAv2. “Particularly, Pixtral Large is able to understand documents, charts, and natural images,” the company wrote in its announcement post. Mistral is also debuting a new version of its flagship Mistral Large model. Version 24.11 reportedly offers improved performance in tasks that require larger amounts of context, such as document analysis. “At Mistral, our approach to AI is different — we’re not chasing artificial general intelligence at all costs; our mission is to instead place frontier AI in your hands, so you get to decide what to do with advanced AI capabilities,” the company wrote. “This approach has allowed us to be quite frugal with our capital, while consistently delivering frontier capabilities at affordable price points.” As such, all of the features debuting today are currently free to use for all le Chat users. Mistral was founded in April 2023 by former Meta Platforms and Google DeepMind employees. The company is currently valued at $2 billion and offers nearly a dozen different AI models for commercial and research use. Three of the models — Mistral 7B, Mixtral 8x7B, and Mixtral 8x22B — are open source and available to the public through Hugging Face. The Mistral Small, Medium, and Large models, conversely, are closed-source and only available through the Mistral API. Users can access both Large 24.11 and Pixtral Large with either a commercial use license or a more restrictive research license from Mistral. Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesman said ******’s office no longer had a function because Qatar had suspended its mediation efforts on a Gaza ceasefire deal, although he stressed that it was not permanently closed. The ************ official told the BBC that the ****** negotiators had adjusted their presence in the region and were keeping their locations secret to avoid embarrassment for host countries. But they said it was likely Hayya was in Turkey as he had travelled there several times over the past two months. And while the official also denied reports that Qatar had formally asked ****** to leave, they said the Gulf state seemed to be positioning itself carefully to avoid any tensions between the current administration of President Joe Biden and the incoming administration of President-elect Donald Trump. Qatar has hosted ******’s political bureau since 2012 and played a key role in facilitating indirect negotiations between the group and *******. But the recent developments suggest a shift in their relationship. Earlier this month, Qatar announced that it had paused its efforts to broker a Gaza ceasefire and said they would only resume “when the parties show willingness and seriousness to end the brutal war”. But it denied reports that ****** leaders had been asked to leave. On Tuesday, foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari confirmed at a media briefing that “the leaders of ****** that are within the negotiating team are now not in Doha”. “As you know, they move between different capitals. I don’t want to get into details of what that means,” he added. “But what I can tell you very clearly is that the office of ****** in Doha was created for the sake of the negotiating process. Obviously, when there is no mediation process, the office itself doesn’t have any function.” He also stressed that “a decision to close down the office permanently is a decision that you will hear about from us directly and shouldn’t be part of media speculation”. On Monday, ****** said in a Telegram statement that sources in the group had “denied what some ******** media outlets had circulated about ****** leadership leaving Qatar to Turkey”. It followed a similar denial from the Turkish foreign ministry, with sources telling the Turkish news channel NTV: “****** political bureau members visit Turkey from time to time. F1 24 devs claim players won’t “wanna go back” after using their new ray-tracing features F1 24 devs claim players won’t “wanna go back” after using their new ray-tracing features ABizzel12d ago (Edited 2d ago ) @Number1TailzFan A console doesn’t require the CPU overhead a PC does, and show me where you can readily buy new Zen 2 or Intel 10000 series CPUs or older, that also cost less than current Zen 2 / Intel 12000 offerings. The entire point of PC is options, and you’re complaining about CPUs in the same performance tier, but also the option for a step up. As far as the GPUs, you should know TFLOPs is a horrible way to compare GPUs especially GPUs from different manufactures (NVIDIA vs AMD TFLOPS NEVER align with real world performance), or different generations of GPUs. For example, RX 6000 vs RX 7000 would have you believe all 7000 series GPUs are 2x as fast as their previous 6000 series since they have 2x the TFLOPS. But the RX 6800 is only 16.17TF compared to the RX 7700xt being 35.17 TFLOPS, yet the 6800 performs on par with the 7700XT. RX 7000 series use dual integer calculations to get its TFLOPS which is why it’s 2x the previous gen, but that has nothing to do with real world performance. At best cutting the TFLOPS in half of RX 7000 gets you closer to an apples to apples comparison, but even then you’d be looking at 17.59 TFLOPS for the 7700xt, which again the 6800 performs on par with even though it’s almost 9% less TFLOPs. Same thing we’ve seen with PS5 vs Series X. On average, real world comparisons put the PS5 Pro on par with the RX 7800xt in several games, and generally beats it in RT due to the newer RDNA architecture, which is why it soundly outperforms the 6800 (which based on TFLOPS is equal to the PS5 *****). 14. Windows 11 multitasking is about to get even better Windows 11 multitasking is about to get even better Windows Latest Windows 11 already has great multitasking thanks to Snap Layouts. So, if you know how to split your screen in Windows 11 Snap Layouts, you’re already aware of how good it is. And things will get even easier since the Windows 11 KB5046716 update is tinkering around with new Snap Layouts and hidden label ideas, as Phantomofearth noticed and confirmed by Windows Latest. Windows Latest tested the features and can confirm that Microsoft is testing with different text options for the Snap Layouts, such as: Choose an app layout for your screen Choose where to move this window Choose where to snap this window Choose where to arrange this window Earlier, Microsoft made the feature easier to use. You can now see which app will go where because the layout displays icons of the open apps and text. The keyboard shortcut is also shown in case you forget. Microsoft makes it easier to open Snap Layouts with the Windows key +z. Currently, there is no text explaining what the layout options are, making it more difficult for those who are new to the feature. The Windows update also has other updates for the File Explorer with labels for regularly used actions such as paste, copy, delete, etc. Microsoft also made other improvements to the Beta build, such as adding share support to the Start menu. This new addition lets users share files directly from the Taskbar jump lists. You can right-click on any icon on the Taskbar to see a share icon alongside a file. Additionally, there is a new gamepad layout for the on-screen keyboard, and once selected, you can use your Xbox controller to type and navigate quickly. Not to mention, the new Narrator improvements help you skip past links in a text file and jump straight to any list or table of contents. Coming from the same influential and creative mind as the original ****** Stranding, as well as the Metal Gear franchise before it, game designer Hideo Kojima introduced the game himself. Of course, nothing about Kojima’s games are ever straightforward, and what was revealed about ****** Stranding 2 probably raised more questions than it answered. We’re strapping on our boots, connecting to our BBs, and are ready to make the trek to find out everything there is about ****** Stranding 2. ****** Stranding 2: On the Beach will surely be one of the most anticipated upcoming video games when more information becomes available. If you’re on the lookout for new games on your favorite platform, don’t forget to visit our articles on upcoming PS5 games, upcoming Switch games, upcoming Xbox Series X games and upcoming PC games. Release date speculation Image used with permission by copyright holder ****** Stranding 2: On the Beach only has the wide release window of 2025. Platforms Image used with permission by copyright holder The only platform ****** Stranding 2 is currently confirmed for is the PS5. This makes sense as the first game was a PlayStation console exclusive at launch, later getting a PC port in 2020 and even coming to PC Game Pass. While it is possible for ****** Stranding 2 to come to PC, and even PC Game Pass, like the first, Sony does own the IP, so don’t expect it to come to any competitor’s consoles. Trailers We got our first long look at ****** Stranding 2 with the debut trailer from 2022’s Game Awards. While the trailer has no gameplay, there are a lot of story and character details shown. We see Fragile and a baby (possibly Lou?) playing in a room with screens projecting the outside world. Fragile looks younger here than in the original, which could imply this is a flashback. Something appears to be going wrong, and she attempts to escape from unseen pursuers in an elevator. After getting shot and crashing, she appears to pass out, leaving the baby’s fate unknown. We see Sam next, who has visibly aged, approaching Fragile. A massive floating structure with the Drawbridge logo rises from the oil, which she wants him to accompany her on. The trailer ends with a mysterious masked figure about to reveal their face, but we cut before it is shown. This newest look that came at Sony’s February 2024 State of Play gave us a lot more context for the game, such as Sam now working for a group called Drawbridge, once again attempting to make connections across the country. We also learn for certain that the masked man is Higgs, who has somehow returned from the Beach for revenge on Sam, and is rocking a guitar ******* that shoots lasers in a very Kojima-style display. It is almost always impossible to determine a Kojima game’s story prior to playing it (and even afterward it’s still a challenge), but we do know that he rewrote the script entirely after the pandemic. During The Game Awards 2022, Kojima said “I had the story written before the pandemic. But after experiencing the pandemic, I just rewrote the whole story from scratch. I also didn’t want to predict any more futures, so I rewrote it.” Gameplay Image used with permission by copyright holder The gameplay we’ve seen appears to be an evolution of what was established in the first game. There will be lots of walking, climbing, and managing weight once again in a much wider range of environments. We also see a little combat against new robotic enemies, though not a clear look as to how they will ****** back differently than humans in the last game. Preorder Kojima Productions There’s no preorder information yet, but we’ll update this section as soon as there is. 17. Hackers are hiding password-stealing tricks in snail mail Hackers are hiding password-stealing tricks in snail mail Digital Trends Just when you thought you heard it all about hackers stealing passwords, something like this comes up. Hackers have been observed using snail mail, sent from a seemingly reputable source and then pushing recipients to download an app, to try and steal sensitive information. As reported by The Register, victims received a letter from the “Federal Office of Meteorology and Climatology in Switzerland,” and inside was a physical piece of paper, pressuring them to use the QR code to download an app called “Severe Weather Warning App” for Android. However, once they scan the QR code, it takes them to a third-party site instead of the official Google Play Store. Switzerland’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has already warned about the almost identical-looking app that contains the malware Coper, also known as Octo2. The Coper ******* horse is dangerous because it intercepts two-factor authentication texts and push notifications. It also attacks banking apps on your Android device, stealing data such as credentials and other information needed to log into your account. It can also respond to instructions from command-and-control servers and aims to gather lots of permission to get away with its evil deeds. There are clear, but subtle differences between legitimate and fake apps. For example, the genuine app says “Alertswiss,” while the fake one says “AlertSwiss.” The difference is in the capital S. You might also notice some differences with the app logo, plus think about it: sending physical mail is not free, so this new method only makes you think about hackers’ success. “It is the first time the NCSC sees malware delivery through this method,” the agency told The Register. “The letters look official with the correct logo of the Federal Office for Meteorology and thus trustworthy. In addition, the fraudsters build up pressure in the letter to tempt people into rash actions.” QR code scams have been around for a while, but this is the first time we’ve heard about it being sent via physical mail. While it’s definitely not good news, there’s a small silver lining to the situation since the attacks have only been caught happening in Switzerland so far — and are limited to Android users. Yet, all QR codes are not bad since they have improved and changed how we donate money and view the restaurant menu. But you definitely want to be careful about the source of the code before scanning and following its instructions. 19. Prosecutors back delaying Trump sentence until he leaves White House Prosecutors back delaying Trump sentence until he leaves White House New York prosecutors have vowed to oppose President-elect Donald Trump’s effort to overturn his ********* conviction, but they expressed a willingness to wait to sentence him until he completes his upcoming presidential term. Prosecutors urged the judge who is overseeing Trump’s sentence after his guilty verdict to consider options other than dismissal, including holding off until the president-elect is scheduled to leave the White House in 2029. The Manhattan district attorney’s office asked Justice Juan Merchan to set a new deadline of 9 December for both sides to consider the case and file new motions. Trump’s sentencing is scheduled for 26 November, but it could be delayed further. In May, Trump was convicted on 34 charges of falsifying business records, stemming from an attempt to cover up a potential **** scandal ahead of his first presidential victory in 2016. A few weeks later, however, the US Supreme Court held in a separate case that presidents enjoy a degree of immunity from ********* prosecution for “official acts.” Trump’s lawyers want a judge to overturn his New York conviction on the grounds of presidential immunity, and because of his impending term in the White House. But prosecutors argued on Tuesday that the issues at the centre of their case did not have to do with official presidential duties. They stressed that the trial and conviction occurred before the US Supreme Court decided this summer that presidents had broad protection from ********* prosecution. They did acknowledge Justice Merchan’s “need to balance competition consititutional interests”, however. They asked the judge to consider “non-dismissal options” that could included “deferral of all remaining ********* proceedings until after the end of Defendant’s upcoming presidential term”. “The DA is saying that the court should put off sentencing until after Trump leaves the White House,” said New York attorney and former prosecutor Mitchell Epner. “Don’t drop the conviction – but don’t do anything until after Trump leaves office.” With Trump’s inauguration just weeks away, little time remained on the calendar for a new round of motions and briefs, Mr Epner said. The case would be paused anyway after 20 January, when Trump takes the oath of office, he said. Of the four ********* prosecutions against Trump, the New York case was the only one to go to trial and reach a guilty verdict. But the final outcome is now uncertain as Trump prepares to head to the White House next January. Nevertheless, Trump’s spokesman Steven Cheung – who has been tapped to serve as White House director of communications – declared “total and definitive victory”. Justice Merchan has yet to rule on the matter, however. Former Manhattan prosecutor Diana Florence said that this request makes it doubtful that Trump would face sentencing at the scheduled hearing on 26 November, as the judge will probably accept the prosecutors’ proposal. “I think there’s less than half a percent chance that he’d be sentenced next week,” she said. The judge has a range of options for Trump’s sentence, from fines and probation all the way up to a four-year prison sentence – though legal experts say the president-elect could avoid any legal punishment. The Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg first charged Trump with falsifying business records in April 2023, accusing the president-elect of a hush-money scheme in the waning days of the 2016 presidential campaign. Prosecutors said that Trump tried to disguise reimbursements to his personal attorney, who had paid off an ****** film star with whom Trump allegedly had an affair. Because of the scheme’s proximity to the election, they claimed it amounted to election interference. Trump maintained his innocence, denied that the affair ever occurred and alleged the case was a form of political persecution. But in May, a jury of 12 New Yorkers found the president-elect guilty. Trump’s sentencing hearing was delayed multiple times. The court agreed to hold off any decisions until today while all parties sorted out the historic implications of his re-election. 22. Qualcomm says it expects $4 billion in PC chip sales by 2029 Qualcomm says it expects $4 billion in PC chip sales by 2029 Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon speaks at the Computex forum in Taipei, Taiwan, June 3, 2024. Ann Wang | Reuters Qualcomm said on Tuesday that it expects its so-called internet of things business to more than quadruple in sales by 2029 to around $22 billion. Of that amount, roughly $4 billion will come from PC chips, Qualcomm said at its investor day on Tuesday. The chipmaker just introduced PC processors earlier this year, when it released Snapdragon X for Windows devices. The latest forecast marks an important milestone for Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, who took over the company in 2021 with a promise to get past a reliance on smartphones. In fiscal 2024, Qualcomm’s handset business reported $24.86 billion in sales, about 75% of its entire chip business. Qualcomm also said on Tuesday that automotive revenues would rise about 175% by 2029 to $8 billion, of which 80% is tied to contracts that have already been secured. “We have been on this trajectory realizing that the technologies we have developed over the many years can be very relevant to a number of different industries beyond mobile,” Amon said at the investor event. Another $4 billion in revenue will come from industrial chips and $2 billion will come from chips for headsets, a category Qualcomm calls XR. About $4 billion of the forecast is a catch-all for other chip sales, like those for wireless headphones and tablets. Qualcomm shares are up 16% this year, trailing the Nasdaq, which has gained 26%. Qualcomm grew rapidly over the past decade as its modems and processors became essential parts for high-end smartphones, especially those running Google Android. Qualcomm also sells modems and related parts to Apple for its iPhones. But the company has warned investors that Apple could choose to stop buying Qualcomm parts as soon as 2027. Qualcomm said on Tuesday that its growing businesses will more than offset any losses from Apple. A Li Auto L9 electric vehicle (EV) is seen displayed at the Qualcomm booth during the first China International Supply Chain Expo (CISCE) in Beijing, China November 28, 2023. Florence Lo | Reuters Qualcomm’s strategy under Amon has been to use the technology its developed for its handset chips, like modems, processors, and AI accelerators, in new markets, including cars, PCs, and virtual reality. The investor event was the first time in years that the company has given a forecast for those new markets. Qualcomm said its total addressable market is as large as $900 billion. “We put a strategy in ’21, and we’re not changing our strategy,” Amon said. Laptop and desktop chips are currently dominated by Intel, which has over 70% percent of the market, according to Mercury Research. Intel reported $29 billion in PC chip sales in its 2023. “The competitive landscape changed between the Windows and Macs,” Amon said, referring to Apple’s move in 2020 to switch from Intel to its own processors. “We saw that as an opportunity, especially as the ecosystem did not have confidence in the existing players to actually deliver a solution.” The forecast for XR headsets also hints at the growth potential of the VR market over the next five years. Qualcomm supplies chips to many of the top headset makers, including Meta for its Quest and Ray-Bans products. When it comes to artificial intelligence, Qualcomm calls itself an “edge AI” company, in contrast to cloud-based AI that’s typically powered by Nvidia processors. Company officials didn’t rule out introducing data center products in an interview with CNBC. Qualcomm suggested that its mobile chips will be able to run the kind of advanced AI that’s restricted to large server farms today, an indication that that company may benefit from the AI ***** down the road as the technology becomes more efficient. “What you can run on the cloud last year, you can run on the device this year,” Durga Malladi, Qualcomm’s senior vice president in charge of planning, said at the event. John Fetterman in the 2022 Senate race in Pennsylvania after receiving Trump’s endorsement. This is a developing story and will be updated.
