China military’s supercomputer tops global rankings, clocks 6,320 MTEPS/W
A ******** military-developed supercomputer has once again ranked first in an international test of AI computing efficiency. Tianhe, created by the National University of Defense Technology, tops the latest list of the world’s most power-efficient big data processing systems, achieving its second win since 2021.
The advanced computing power of supercomputers can be applied to simulations for studying climate change, conducting materials research, exploring space, and developing treatments for various *********.
Energy-efficient big data computing
The Green Graph500 list measures performance-per-watt for processing large graphs, comparing the energy efficiency of the fastest supercomputers tackling data-intensive tasks. First released in 2010, it is the leading international ranking for assessing the performance of supercomputers in graph computation.
China’s indigenous supercomputer, the Tianhe Exa-node Prototype, reached 6,320 MTEPS/W, securing the top position in the Green Graph500 ranking for big data. This performance metric, measured in million traversed edges per second per watt, evaluates a system’s efficiency in internal data communication, the South China Morning Post reports.
It surpassed the previous Tianhe Exa-node Prototype, which achieved 4,385 MTEPS/W and placed first runner-up, as well as Eniad, a supercomputer developed by the University of Pennsylvania, which ranked third with 2,057 MTEPS/W. Tianhe last topped the list in July 2021.
Graph analysis is a growing field in AI computing that focuses on identifying connections within graph structures. It is a valuable tool for studying complex networks, patterns, and structured data. For instance, it can be used to analyze social media relationship maps or transaction histories across multiple accounts.
Energy-efficient big data computing is also becoming increasingly essential, as energy consumption is expected to be a limiting factor. As the need for large-scale data analysis grows, graph computing is becoming an important aspect of big data and artificial intelligence, attracting increasing research interest worldwide.
Major breakthrough in data analysis
According to Meng Xiangfei, the chief scientist at the National Supercomputer Centre in Tianjin, which hosts the Tianhe supercomputer, the top ranking reflects significant international breakthroughs in the system’s ability to handle complex data analysis, as reported by state news agency Xinhua. The ******** researcher added that it would play a crucial role in advancing the development of next-generation intelligent technologies.
Tianhe has also contributed to the center’s significant achievements in research areas like numerical simulation technology, materials computation, and environmental meteorology, according to a post on the ******** social media platform WeChat.
Furthermore, the system has also achieved major breakthroughs in industrial areas such as superintelligent integration, large generative models, and supercomputing internet.
Last year, the ******** National Supercomputing Center (NSC) in Guangzhou also introduced the domestically developed supercomputer, Tianhe Xingyi. While no specifications had been disclosed, officials have claimed that it surpasses the capabilities of the renowned Tianhe-2 supercomputer.

Michaelia Cash has accused Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of having a bad track record “when it comes to dealing with **********” amid reports the Government is close to securing a deal for the Bali Nine to serve out the remainder of their sentences in Australia.
Discussions are continuing between Australia and Indonesia over the repatriation of the five remaining members of the group who were convicted in 2006 of being part of a ******* smuggling ring.
Mr Albanese raised the matter with new Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto when they met on the sidelines of the G20 summit last week. He has also discussed it previously with Joko Widodo.
Cabinet minister Don Farrell confirmed on Sunday that if the deal did come to fruition, the five men — Si Yi Chen, Michael Czugaj, Matthew Norman, Scott Rush and Martin Stephens — would serve out the remainder of their life sentences in *********** prisons.
“The proposal isn’t, as I understand it, to release these people. They would continue to serve their sentence, except they’re serving them in Australia,” he told Sky News.
But Senator Cash, the shadow attorney-general, said there were too many unknown details.
“What’s the nature of the deal? Who’s paying for it? What’s Australia giving up in return? And will they or won’t they continue to serve the balance of their sentence in Australia?” she said.
“I mean, it’s a reality that Mr Albanese, when it comes to dealing with ********** … he doesn’t have a great track record.”
She went on to refer to the non-citizens released from immigration facilities after the High Court ruled infinite detention for people with no prospect of being deported was unconstitutional.
Senator Cash would not say whether her view was that the Australians should remain in Indonesian jails.
“If you’re asking me, would this have been a priority of a government I am in, a priority for me is dealing with the cost of living crisis that the *********** people are under as a result of Mr Albanese and his government’s actions,” she said.
“Any *********** going up to Asia, but in particular to Indonesia, knows they have the ****** penalty for drugs. It’s as simple as that.
“And in the case of the Bali Nine, they were convicted of … being part of a ******* smuggling syndicate to import back into Australia in excess of eight kilos of *******.

Cabinet minister Murray Watt said they were “pretty strange remarks” from someone who aspired to again be Australia’s attorney-general.
“It’s up to Michaelia Cash and Peter Dutton to explain their position on the Bali Nine. From the *********** government’s perspective, we will always advocate for Australians who get into trouble overseas, whoever they might be,” he told reporters.
Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young said that was a “cruel and heartless” approach.
“If you want a glimpse of what a Peter Dutton government will look like, this is it. Don’t be fooled (by) Dutton in lamb’s clothes,” she told ABC’s Insiders.
The Bali Nine were arrested in Indonesia after a tip-off from the *********** Federal Police, a decision that has come under scrutiny given Australia opposes the ****** penalty.
In 2015 when two other members of the convicted group, Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, were approaching their ********** date, former prime ministers Malcolm Fraser, Bob Hake, Paul Keating, John Howard, Kevin Rudd and Julia Gillard made a ******* plea for their lives to be spared
Then-leader Tony Abbott also appealed for clemency on their behalf.
Another of the group ***** in jail from ******* and Renae Lawrence was released in 2018 after her sentence was commuted.
Mr Albanese has advocated for the release of *********** prisoners from foreign jails throughout his time as Prime Minister, including Cheng Lei, Sean Turnell and Chau Van Kham.

Hiker stumbles on previously-hidden, 280-million-year old ecosystem
Snow and ice are melting on the Alps at an alarming rate — in October, Reuters cited a report by monitoring body GLAMOS, which states if greenhouse gases continue to rise, the Alps glaciers could lose more than 80 per cent of their current mass by 2100.
This rapid melt is causing once-hidden artifacts to be revealed.
The most recent example is in the Italian Alps, where Claudia Steffensen spotted a strange formation resembling a footprint on a rock slab while hiking.
Researchers were alerted to the find and after numerous site visits, they discovered an entire ecosystem fossilized and hidden for 280 million years.

The pre-dinosaur fossils, dating back to the Permian *******, include footprints and tail marks from at least five species, plant impressions, wave ripples, and even raindrops. These rare finds, recovered by helicopter, were revealed to the press on November 13.
It appears the fossils remained in tact because they used to reside close to water.
“The footprints were made when these sandstones and shales were still sand and mud-soaked in water at margins of rivers and lakes, which periodically, according to the seasons, dried up,” Ausonio Ronchi, a paleontologist at the University of Pavia in Italy who examined the fossils, said in a translated statement.
“The summer sun, drying out those surfaces, hardened them to the point that the return of new water did not erase the footprints but, on the contrary, covered them with new clay, forming a protective layer.”
Experts say these “incredible traces of life,” made visible by the effects of climate change, come from another time in Earth’s history when a warming climate changed the world, leading to a mass extinction known as the “Great Dying,” which wiped out 90 per cent of Earth’s species.

Hyaluronic acid supplements that were sold in the US through Amazon are being recalled by their manufacturer after the FDA found that they were contaminated with two over-the-counter drugs.
MXBBB is voluntarily recalling one lot of their Umary Acid Hyaluronic supplements following laboratory analysis that showed the presence of diclofenac and omeprazole.
The recall comes after the FDA warned three times this year that customers should not buy any Umary products because “they may be harmful to your health” due to “potentially dangerous hidden ***** ingredients not listed on the product label.”

The recall includes a single lot of the the hyaluronic acid sold as 30 caplets of 850 mg. According to Newsweek, the brand sold the supplements on Amazon, although they are no longer available on the site. They were also available in retail stores and on several other websites, including solovital.com.
Hyaluronic acid can be found in foods like garlic, beans, sweet potatoes, peanuts, onions, cabbage, spinach, apples, grapes and berries.
Taken orally as a dietary supplement, it can help ease arthritis pain and moisturize skin. It may also have benefits for the eyes, lungs and bladder.
However, diclofenac — which was found to be in the supplements — is an NSAID, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory *****. NSAIDs can increase the risk of cardiovascular issues like heart ******* and *******. They may also cause gastrointestinal issues like bleeding, ulceration and perforation of the stomach, which can be fatal.
It can also have adverse interactions with other drugs.
Meanwhile, omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (commonly referred to as PPI) often used to treat acid reflux. It’s sold under brand names like Prilosec.
Both of the “hidden drugs” can cause adverse reactions, and the FDA previously warned against buying any products from Umary. FDA
According to the FDA, “This hidden ingredient may mask stomach issues such as erosion, ulcers and stomach *******, and it can also interact with other medications and should not be taken with certain medications.”
Consumers experiencing adverse reactions are instructed to fill out the online form.
In June, the FDA put out a warning to customers not to buy any products by Umary after their lab analysis found the ***** contamination with the two drugs.
They followed up with an additional warning in July and yet another in September, noting an increase in reports of adverse reactions including stomach, heart and skin issues.

More than 160,000 pounds of ground beef are being recalled nationwide in an E. coli outbreak
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced a nationwide recall of roughly 167,277 pounds of ground beef products.
On Nov. 20, Detroit, Michigan-based Wolverine Packing Co. initiated the recall due to a potential contamination of E. coli, a bacterium that can cause serious infections.
An E. coli outbreak linked to the ground beef has left at least 15 people *****, federal regulators are reporting.
The issue came to light when the Minnesota Department of Agriculture, on Nov. 13, reported a number of illnesses linked to ground beef consumption to the USDA’s Food and Safety Inspection Services (FSIS).
The FSIS began investigating the outbreak with Minnesota’s agriculture and health departments and traced the illnesses to ground beef products from Wolverine Packing. A sample collected on Nov. 20 tested positive for E. coli.
The affected products include fresh ground beef with a “use by” date of 11/14/2024 and frozen ground beef marked with a production date of 10/22/2024. These products were distributed to restaurants across the country.
The FSIS is worried that some of these products might still be sitting in restaurant refrigerators or freezers. The agency is advising restaurants to throw away or return any recalled products.
E. coli is a bacteria that is found in the the intestines of people and animals. Most E. coli are harmless, but certain strains can cause serious infections.
Common symptoms of an E. coli infection include stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting – most people can recover without treatment in about a week, according to the CDC.
However serious infections can lead to serious kidney problems, and could require hospitalization.
The USDA said anyone worried about illness should contact a healthcare provider. The specific strain of E. coli found in the recalled beef can cause dehydration, ******* diarrhea, and cramps 2–8 days after exposure, according to the USDA. Most people recover within a week, but some may develop hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a severe kidney condition, particularly affecting young children and older adults. Warning signs include easy bruising, pale skin, and reduced ****** output. Immediate medical attention is essential if these symptoms appear.

Marcos’ congressional allies are separately investigating the elder Duterte’s war against drugs that led to more than 6000 ******* in anti-***** operations and alleged *********** over the younger Duterte’s use of public funds during her tenure as education secretary.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Germany’s technology and services company Bosch said Friday it planned to reduce its automotive division workforce by as many as 5,500 jobs in the next several years in another sign of the headwinds hitting the ******* and global auto industries.
The company cited stagnating global auto sales, too much factory capacity in the auto industry compared with sales prospects and a slower than expected transition to electric-powered, software-controlled vehicles.
The news comes two days after Ford Motor Co. announced plans to drop 4,000 jobs in Europe, and with Volkswagen employees threatening work stoppages over what they say management has told them are plans to close as many as three factories in Germany. Revenue at Stellantis, created through the 2021 merger of PSA Peugeot and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, tumbled 27% in its most recent quarter that ended this fall.
Auto sales have slowed this year in Europe as consumers stung by inflation hold back on spending, while automakers have sunk billions into developing electric cars only to see slower sales than expected and new competition from cheaper ******** brands. The ******* government abruptly cancelled purchase incentives at the end of last year, sending electric vehicles sales in that country down by 27% over the first nine months of this year.
Some 3,500 of the job reductions at Bosch would come before the end of 2027 and would hit the part of the company that develops advanced driver assistance and automated driving technologies, as well as centralized vehicle software, said Bosch, which is headquartered in Gerlingen near Stuttgart. About half those job reductions would be at locations in Germany.
“The auto industry has significant overcapacities,” the company said in a statement. “In addition, the market for future technologies is not developing as originally expected … At the moment, many projects in this business area are being put off or abandoned by automakers.”
In addition, 750 jobs would be lost at a plant in Hildesheim, Germany by end 2032, 600 of those by the end of 2026. A plant in Schwaebisch Gmund would lose some 1,300 over between 2027 and 2030.
The reductions are still in the planning stage and final numbers would have to be agreed with employee representatives and carried out in what the company said would be a socially responsible way.
While automakers put their names on the cars they sell, most of the car is actually made by a series of suppliers
Some 230,000 people work for Bosch’s mobility division, out of a global workforce of 429,000. In addition to its business as an auto industry technology supplier Bosch makes factory and building equipment and software across a range of products including industrial boilers and waste-heat recovery systems, video security systems, and power tools.

An orthopaedic surgeon has been allowed to keep his job despite crashing his car into hospital barriers while more than five times the drink-drive limit.
Dr Paulo Torres, a foot and ankle specialist, was spotted by a police officer driving erratically before he crashed into the barriers near the hospital where he worked.
However, the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service has decided to let him keep his job after hearing he was in personal “crisis” at the time of the offence.
Dr Torres was spotted driving erratically by an officer at around 4.30pm on 22 Feb 2022, the tribunal heard.
As the surgeon reached the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle upon Tyne, he mounted the pavement and crashed into the barriers and was discovered slumped ****** at the wheel. He was later arrested.
Two breathalyser tests revealed he was five times the drink-driving limit, with readings of 190mcg and 175mcg – the legal limit is 35mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

Tom Moran, for the General Medical Council (GMC) told the hearing it was “only good fortune” that nobody was hurt, adding that Dr Torres had been so intoxicated it affected his ability to stand.
The tribunal ruled that Dr Torres was allowed to continue in his orthopaedic role but must be supervised by a “workplace reporter” while at work and inform the GMC if he moves job.
However, it also heard Dr Torres had demonstrated “significant insight” into his offending.
Tribunal chair Nessa Sharkett said: “He remained responsible for his actions and given the circumstances in which he drove and the high level of alcohol in his breath at the time there can be no doubt of the seriousness of this offence.
“Further, there can be no doubt that his actions resulting in the conviction had the potential to put others at risk of harm and undermined public confidence in the profession.
“Furthermore, the Tribunal considered that Dr Torres’ conviction brought the profession into disrepute.”
‘Sincere remorse’
Tom Day, representing Dr Torres, told the tribunal that the surgeon had “shown obvious and sincere remorse for this conduct”.
Mr Day argued there was a public interest in allowing Dr Torres to continue to work, given the “specialist nature of the work he carries out and the high regard in which he is held.”
In its ruling, the tribunal noted that Dr Torres had “struggled to put into words” his remorse and regret for his actions, adding that it was impressed with his honesty and sincerity.
“Dr Torres had been uncomfortable discussing his background as he did not want it to look as if he was seeking to excuse himself,” it was also heard.
The ruling added: “He also acknowledged the negative impact his behaviour would have had on the profession and felt that his actions were a huge betrayal of his profession.
“He recognised how supportive his colleagues had been and wanted to ensure that he worked hard to regain their trust and be present and reliable.”

Perth Lynx coach Ryan Petrik is keen to get to the bottom of why his squad looks like a different team in each half after they again came from behind to win on Saturday.
The Lynx overcame an 11-point half-time deficit to beat Sydney Flames 84-78 at the Bendat Basketball Centre. That came after Perth had conceded 54 points across the first two quarters.
The Lynx also conceded more than 50 points in the first half against Townsville and Canberra.
Teams are averaging 49.4 points against Perth in the first half but only 32.4 points after the main break. Sydney scored just 24 points in the second half on Saturday.
Perth are second on the ladder a 4-1 record but Petrik said it was important to get to the bottom of why they’re not starting well.
“We’ve got to figure it out. Our first halves have been sloppy for sure,” Petrik said.

“We rotate pretty hard. We’re kind of hoping we can catch some teams in the second half. Even tonight, LA (Laeticia Amihere) has played 34 (minutes) and Maley has played 33. Everyone else is under that.
“I don’t know if we’d have anybody in the top 10 in the league for minutes played. That’s by design. And that’s without Atwell as well.
“We try to rotate pretty hard. I don’t know if that’s why we’re leaking in the first half. Maybe it’s why we’re coming home with a wet sail in the second half – maybe.”
Amihere was outstanding in the win over Sydney with 28 points and four steals, Anneli Maley had 11 points and 10 rebounds, Ally Wilson scored 19 points and Steph Gorman had a big impact with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Townsville are the only team to beat the Lynx this season and they will again clash at the Bendat Basketball Centre on Wednesday night.
The ***** had a massive night of rebounding in the previous clash, winning that battle 48-29.
Petrik said his team knew they had plenty of room for improvement from that night.

“It was how badly we played,” he said.
“Townsville were really good and they deserved to win but I don’t think we’ve played a worse game of basketball in a long time and somehow only lost by four. That’s the glass half-full. If you go back and watch it, we should have lost by 80 and we lost by four. We’ll take that but we’ve got a long way to go yet.”

Trudeau’s carefree night at the Eras Tour sparked outrage as anti-NATO demonstrations in his home riding of Montreal turned violent Friday night. Police reported smashed windows and fires during the protest as the city hosted the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
At around 6:10 p.m., protesters lit a mannequin on ***** in the middle of the crowd and began marching together, throwing objects including smoke ****** and metal barriers into the street to obstruct police work, according to CBC News reports.

Min Woo Lee has explained how a “freak” injury suffered in bed meant he couldn’t bend to read his putts during his *********** PGA Championship title defence.
The popular 2014 winner was on the cut line in the abbreviated, three-round event but responded with a five-under 66 on Sunday to finish seven-under for the tournament.
“I hurt my knee at the beginning of the week, so I couldn’t bend down and I still don’t have the confidence to bend down,” he said.
“That’s a reason I was a little flat for the first few days.
“It was just a freak accident. I literally just turned in bed and something popped.
“It’s getting a lot better but to read putts, I couldn’t bend down so I was half kneeling.
“When something happens you just don’t have the full trust in it yet, but I’m slowly getting to that.
“I can still swing a club at whatever miles per hour but I can’t bend down, which is really astonishing. It’s a good injury I guess.”
Lee shot out of the blocks on Thursday with five early birdies before struggling in the rain-hit tournament.
But confident his knee ******* will subside, he was able to take some positives out of Sunday’s performance that included just one blemish among six birdies.
“To find something … is good stuff going into next week,” Lee said as he looked ahead to the *********** Open, which starts on Thursday at the Kingston Heath and Victoria golf clubs.
“Not much is wrong with my game. I just need to keep my head up high, and keep playing good golf.”

The International Space Station (ISS) is leaking — and major space agencies are divided over what to do about it.
The ***** is located in a Russian segment of the station known as a PrK module, which connects Russia’s Zvezda service module to the space station’s main body. NASA and Russian space agency Roscosmos have known about the ***** since at least 2019, but its underlying cause ******** a mystery. Since its discovery, cosmonauts have taken various steps to minimize its impact, including sealing off the segment when it is not in use. But Roscosmos and NASA now disagree about the *****’s severity.
According to a recent NASA report, the ***** has intensified to the point where it poses a risk to the ISS’s goal of operating until 2030. What’s more, some NASA officials believe it could lead to “a catastrophic ********” of the station, Bob Cabana, the chair of the agency’s ISS Advisory Committee, said during a public meeting.
However, Russian space officials have downplayed the severity of the *****, insisting that it will not jeopardize future ISS operations, according to CNN.
The ISS has been continuously occupied since November 2000. Most of its infrastructure is a quarter-century old, and it is possible that years of mechanical stress have caused tiny fissures to form in the walls of certain sections. Additional stress from colliding with small pieces of debris and micrometeors could also have contributed to the perforation.

NASA and Roscosmos have agreed to seal off the leaky segment if the rate of air loss becomes “untenable.” But they have not yet reached a consensus on what, exactly, qualifies as an untenable rate. Currently, air is escaping at a rate of around 2 to 2.5 pounds (0.9 to 1.1 kilograms) per day above the space station’s equilibrium, according to NASA. In April, it briefly spiked to 3.7 pounds per day (1.7 kg); if left unchecked, it could spike again.

The agencies are reportedly working closely with one another to monitor the situation as it unfolds. And NASA plans to add an extra seat — called a “pallet seat” — aboard future SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft in case any astronauts need to evacuate.
“The station is not young,” NASA astronaut Michael Barratt said during a news briefing. “We will expect to see more wear and tear in various other places.”
The space station is expected to operate through to 2030, after which it will be deorbited into Earth’s atmosphere for a fiery farewell. NASA currently has no plans to build a replacement for the ISS and instead will focus on crewed missions to the moon and Mars, according to the agency.

Antarctica is staring down the barrel of a ****, and humans are the ones holding it. Hundreds of concerned scientists came together in Australia recently to discuss how we can put the **** down in what’s being called an “emergency summit.”
The conclusions of the summit were put to paper in a statement released on November 22, 2024, and it’s full of dire warnings that, if history is any teacher, will be ignored.
“Nowhere on Earth is there a greater cause of uncertainty in sea-level rise projections than from East Antarctica, in Australia’s backyard,” the researchers wrote. “The East Antarctic Ice Sheet alone holds enough water to raise global sea levels by approximately 50 meters [164 feet] if completely melted. Implications for our coastal cities and infrastructure are immense.”
The Southern Ocean and Antarctica play incredibly important roles in the planet’s climate. They are, as IFLScience puts it, an “oceanic carbon sink and planetary air-conditioner,” and we’re taking those services for granted. Temperature shifts in that particular part of the world are far more drastic than elsewhere, and recent research found that things are not getting better. They’re getting worse, in fact. Sea ice is at record lows, the ice shelves are unstable, and temperatures are soaring including heatwaves hitting 72°F above average. Those are enormous red flags, but they are so far away and in areas we don’t often see that it’s easy to ignore the frantic flapping of those flags.
“Early-career researchers are urging greater attention to this region, which plays a critical role in regulating Earth’s climate and is vital to our future, yet often overlooked in public discussion and policy making,” the scientists wrote. “We believe that Antarctic and Southern Ocean science should be central to informing climate policy.”
The summit, officially called the 2024 *********** Antarctic Research Conference, was held in Hobart, Tasmania. Some 500 experts showed up to mull over the concerning reports and try and figure out a better way to sound the alarm so that the world really hears.
According to the research, Antarctica currently loses around 17 million tonnes of ice every hour on average, and that rate is increasing.
“Satellite imagery suggests that Antarctica is losing ice more than six times faster than it was 30 years ago,” IFLScience wrote. “Even East Antarctica, once thought to be relatively stable and immune to change, is starting to show signs of extreme upset, such as heatwaves and huge melting events.”
It’s a nearly impossible problem to tackle, because the solution requires the world’s population to come together and make drastic systemic changes in the way we live our day-to-day lives. We surely will adapt, but adaption alone won’t be enough. The only real solution is “deep, rapid, and sustained” slashes to greenhouse gas emissions, which, of course, the Average Joe has little to no control over in any meaningful way.
“Efforts to slow down climate change through coordinated global action are paramount to protect the future of Australia, Antarctica, and our planet,” the researchers wrote. “…Our societies must set and meet targets to ‘bend the carbon curve’ as quickly as possible. ******** to rapidly reduce emissions – every year and every tonne – commits actual and future generations to greater sea-level rise. Every fraction of a degree matters.”

A man who collects vintage crisp packets and memorabilia has said he does not actually like the snacks.
Seventy-year-old Frank Munford, from Lincoln, began his collection five years ago.
Alongside packets from long-gone brands such as Tudor Crisps, he has limited edition mugs, a crisp advent calendar and a Walkers jacket.
“I’ve never met any other crisp packet collector,” Mr Munford said. “I’d like to so we can exchange information and maybe packets.”
Mr Munford says friends have encouraged his hobby
Mr Munford has more than 100 crisp packets, with the oldest dating from the early Seventies. He describes the collection as a “part of social history”.
The feeling of “the chase” and completing a set has kept his hobby alive.
However, despite pouring so much time into his collection, Mr Munford said he was not keen on eating crisps.
If he had to pick a favourite flavour, it would be cheese and onion.
Mr Munford also collects vintage crisp prizes, which could be claimed from companies, including these butterfly brooches
Among the more unusual items in his collection is a full set of Tudor “Flutter-Byes” – butterfly brooch pins which customers could claim from the company.
“You would’ve had to have eaten 240 packets of crisps to claim that,” he said.
Mr Munford belongs to a collector’s club in Lincoln and said his friends were “encouraging” about his crisp compendium.
His wife Pam is also supportive. “I’m proud of him, proud of what he’s achieved and done over the years,” Mrs Munford said.
“The family has grown up with his collecting,” she added. “It’s just dad.”

Mr Munford said his collecting would “never end” because “I can’t help myself”.
He urged fellow collectors to be proud of their hobby, never embarrassed.
“Don’t be a closet collector, come out,” he added.
