Elton John brands government ‘absolute losers’ over AI copyright plans
Elton John brands government ‘absolute losers’ over AI copyright plans
BBC
Sir Elton John described the government as “absolute losers” and said he feels “incredibly betrayed” over plans to exempt technology firms from copyright laws.
Speaking exclusively to Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, he said if ministers go ahead with plans to allow AI firms to use artists’ content without paying, they would be “committing theft, thievery on a high scale”.
This week the government rejected proposals from the House of Lords to force AI companies to disclose what material they were using to develop their programmes.
A government spokesperson said that “no changes” to copyright laws would be “considered unless we are completely satisfied they work for creators”.
Generative AI programmes mine, or learn, from vast amounts of data like text, images, or music online to generate new content which feels like it has been made by a human.
Sir Elton said the “danger” is that, for young artists, “they haven’t got the resources … to fight big tech [firms]”.
“It’s criminal, in that I feel incredibly betrayed,” he added.
“The House of Lords did a vote, and it was more than two to one in our favour,” he said. “The government just looked at it as if to say, ‘Hmm, well the old people … like me can afford it.'”
On Monday, the House of Lords voted by a 147 majority to amend the Data (Use and Access) Bill to add transparency requirements, which aim to ensure copyright holders have to give permission for their work to be used.
But on Wednesday MPs in the House of Commons voted to reject this change, meaning the bill will continue to go back and forth between the two Houses until they reach an agreement on it.
Sir Elton warned the government was on course to “rob young people of their legacy and their income”, adding that he thought the government was “just being absolute losers, and I’m very angry about it”.
The singer said that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer needed to “wise up” and described Technology Secretary Peter Kyle as “a bit of a moron”.
He said if the government does not change its plans, he would be ready to take ministers to court, saying that “we’ll fight it all the way”.
Sir Elton John spoke to the BBC’s Laura Kuenssberg alongside playwright James Graham
Speaking alongside the 78-year-old, playwright James Graham said ministers “do understand the value of creativity… but what’s frustrating is either the complacency or the willingness to let Silicon Valley tech bros get it all their own way”.
The chief executive of *** music, Tom Kiehl, told the BBC that the government is “on the brink” of offering up the country’s music industry “as a sacrificial lamb in its efforts to cosy up to American-based tech giants”.
He added that the prime minister “must not sell” the next generation of singers, songwriters, musicians, and music creators “down the river and allow all that talent to be crushed by letting soulless AI bots plunder their work”.
Ahead of the vote in the House of Lords, Sir Elton joined more than 400 British musicians, writers, and artists in signing a letter calling on the prime minister to update copyright laws in a way that protects them from artificial intelligence.
Beatles singer Sir Paul McCartney, who also signed the letter, previously told the BBC there was a risk AI would create a “Wild West” in which artists’ copyright was not properly protected.
A government spokesperson said it wants the ***’s creative industries and AI companies to “flourish, which is why we’re consulting on a package of measures that we hope will work for both sectors”.
The spokesperson said it was “vital” the government worked through responses to a consultation on proposals to allow developers to use creators’ content unless rights holders elected to “opt out”.
They added that it was “equally important that we put in the groundwork now as we consider the next steps”.
“That is why we have committed to publishing a report and economic impact assessment – exploring the broad range of issues and options on all sides of the debate.”
The full interview with Sir Elton John will be on Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg on Sunday 18 January at 09:00 BST.

China to convert ground-launched artillery into gliders to hit aerial targets, planes
China to convert ground-launched artillery into gliders to hit aerial targets, planes
Reports have emerged that China is actively converting its ground-launched rocket artillery into low-cost, air-targeting precision gliders. If successful, this could rewrite the history of how cheap munitions could be used against aerial threats.
Led by Professor Zhang Shifeng at the National University of Defence Technology in Changsha, China, the research team has developed a prototype called Tianxing-1 (‘Sky Star-1’). This consists of a modified rocket artillery round with lift-generating wings and adjustable tail fins.
Rocket artillery, like America’s Global Mobile Artillery Rocket System, launches rockets rather than conventional shells. Unlike traditional tube artillery, which relies on explosive charges to fire projectiles, rocket artillery uses self-propelled munitions that do not require a barrel.
Typically mounted on mobile platforms, rocket artillery systems can deliver rapid, high-volume barrages over a wide area, making them ideal for saturating enemy positions. While generally less accurate than guided missiles, modern systems increasingly feature GPS or inertial guidance to improve precision.
Teaching an old dog new tricks
Rocket artillery is valued for its mobility, speed of deployment, and ability to overwhelm defenses with concentrated firepower. Interestingly, it is also one of the oldest forms of artillery, with specimens dating back to the early medieval ******* in China.
Modern bona fide rocket artillery, on the other hand, first appeared during World War II, with the ******* Nebelwerfer family of rocket ordnance designs first used in battle. Other examples from the time include the Soviet Katyusha series and numerous other systems employed on a smaller scale by the Western Allies and Japan.
According to a report by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the new ******** Tianxing-1 transitions into a glider, adjusting its course mid-air to hit stationary aerial targets using passive flight (it doesn’t have an engine after the boost phase).
The munition is particularly fast, traveling at subsonic speeds (~656 feet-per-second or 200 m/s). Moreover, it uses a new guidance algorithm that reduces targeting error from 50m to less than 1m. The new rocket is capable of multi-angle attacks, but is not yet suitable for engaging moving targets or fast aircraft.
Promising, but more work needed
While it’s too slow to chase jets or drones, the Tianxing-1 could be deployed in large numbers as a cheap area denial or aerial ambush system, particularly against slower or hovering targets like helicopters or loitering drones.
Reports also suggest that the new system could, in theory, change how armies think about anti-air warfare, opting for a middle ground between expensive surface-to-air missiles and dumb artillery.
As impressive as the development sounds, it is important to note that the Tianxing-1 is designed as more of a training or a tech demo tool rather than a deployable weapon. However, it successor, Tianxing-2, has reportedly completed successful tests with more advanced targeting systems in northwestern China as per SCMP.
Details of the team’s work were published in the April issue of the ******** Journal of National University of Defence Technology. The study highlights the challenges of guiding unpowered, low-speed gliders to hit “targets in the air.”
If perfected and deployed in swarms, this could add a new layer to anti-air defences, especially in scenarios where cost, saturation, and surprise matter more than speed or raw firepower.

Erotic trend sweeping posh suburbs as spicy fantasy books take over TikTok
Erotic trend sweeping posh suburbs as spicy fantasy books take over TikTok
Stepping into bookshop Romancing the Novel in Sydney’s affluent eastern suburbs, one might think they’ve walked directly into a fictional world.
It’s only been nine months since the glass-panelled door swung open on the two-storey bookshop in Paddington, but romance novels have been flying off its painted pink shelves “like hot-cakes”.
Despite a Mills & Boon book being purchased every four seconds across the world, and the 50 Shades trilogy selling over 150m copies, owner Scarlett Hopper recognised an untapped market that was begging for attention.
“I noticed a bit of a hole in the market (over) the last few years,” she told NewsWire.
“America was getting a lot of romance bookstores, but Australia didn’t have as many.”
Camera IconScarlett Hopper opened Romancing the Novel in Paddington last year. NewsWire / Jeremy Piper Credit: News Corp AustraliaCamera IconMs Hopper is a self-published novelist and loves discovering other indie authors. NewsWire / Jeremy Piper Credit: News Corp Australia
Ms Hopper, a self-published author, admitted that she ”eats, sleeps and dreams” of romance novels, but decided to take the plunge and open her own bookshop after growing impatient waiting for one to open nearby.
“I’ve just been waiting for Sydney to get (its own romance bookstore), and when it never came, I felt like this could be my moment,” she said.
“I just woke up one morning and I was like, ‘I’m gonna do this’. And I did, and it’s been amazing.”
Surrounded by cafes and restaurants in Sydney’s swanky inner suburbs, Romancing the Novel doesn’t appear like any run-of-the-mill bookshop.
With its soft pink walls, flowers adorning the bookshelves, literature references hanging in ornate frames and plush velvet chairs nestled into cosy corners, it’s a place where readers can relax and escape the world for a few hours.
“It’s like a warm hug, as dumb as that sounds,” Ms Hopper laughed. “It’s a safe space … it’s very calm.”
The bookshop’s welcoming and romantic aesthetic was hand-curated down to a tee, she said, and has ushered in a community of like-minded people who want to explore a world of romance from a mix of traditional and self-published indie authors.
“Indie authors are the backbone of romance novels,” she told NewsWire. “And the beauty of the indie bookstores, especially the romance ones, is most of the time we’re gonna have a huge focus on indie novels.”
Camera IconThe bookshop opened in September and has been an ‘amazing’ experience for the Sydney-based owner. NewsWire / Jeremy Piper Credit: News Corp Australia
Skeptics warned Ms Hopper that bookshops were a “dying breed”, but she was determined to prove them wrong with her Paddington store, which opened its doors in September last year.
“I think now more than ever, we can see that is so not true,” she said.
Behemoth online retailers like Amazon quickly gobbled up many independent bookshops since launching in Australia, with the number of bookshops dropping from 2,879 in 2013 to 1,457 a decade later, but genre-specific shops like Romancing the Novel remain a staple for the community.
“People want to support small business,” she said. “Also, with (retailers like) Amazon, there’s not a lot of quality control. Whereas in a bookstore, people love to pick out specific books …
some readers have already read the book on their Kindle, and they want it for what they call a ‘trophy’ to have on their shelves.”
Some of the best-selling genres in the Paddington bookshop include small-town romance and dark romance, which “has been having its moment”.That’s not to say she hasn’t been faced with challenges, with some passers-by making remarks and suggestions her shop “would be closed in a few months … especially in such an expensive suburb like Paddington”, but she predicts more romance-focused bookshops to open across the country. “The joke’s on them because romance is (one of) the top-selling genres of fiction … and I know the store speaks for itself.”

Although the love for romance books have been a favourite among majority female readers for centuries, with the first reference to the genre tracing back to Shakespeare’s 1596 play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, romance novels have experienced a renaissance thanks to apps like TikTok, which is slowly shedding the stigma that once cast a shadow over the genre.
“Back in the day these types of novels were the ones you read behind closed doors, but it’s becoming common for women to be open about their tastes, perhaps even feeling confident reading this type of book on a bus,” clinical psychologist Maria Elena Lukeides told NewsWire.
“It feels like social media has given a voice to so many people and highlighted an intense interest this specific niche. Social media has also allowed people to feel as if they are a part of a borderless book club. Inclusive, non-judgemental and highly engaging.”
Camera IconMs Hopper said fans are ’pretty proud’ of the romantic genre. NewsWire / Jeremy Piper Credit: News Corp Australia
Several misconceptions fuel the flames of romance novel stigma, Dr Lukeides said, including accusations of the books being “anti-feminist”, “unrealistic” and “all about sex”.
“The reality is, many of them are quite PG or focus primarily on emotional intimacy and relationship development,” she told NewsWire.
“The idea that romance novels lead to unrealistic expectations is also sort of a myth because many people are able to distinguish fiction from real life.”
For Ms Hopper, the stigma stems from “ignorance” and desire to “discredit” a genre dominated by women.
“People love to yuck on other people’s yum,” she said. “I think we’re kind of over trying to have to make excuses for it. “We’re pretty proud; we’re going to stand on our two feet and scream it from the rooftops.”

World Test Championship Final: WA’s Cameron Green all but seals spot with second County ton
World Test Championship Final: WA’s Cameron Green all but seals spot with second County ton
Western Australia’s Cam Green has revealed vocal home support spurred him to his second County century in a knock that all but seals his place in Australia’s World Test Championship final XI.
The all-rounder’s unbeaten 102 at Bristol came at the perfect time, arresting a run of four straight single-figure scores since hitting 112 on debut for Gloucestershire last month.
In his fourth match since spinal fusion surgery, the towering all-rounder played with plenty of confidence, his trademark driving putting Kent’s bowlers to the sword for the second time in as many meetings.
With the WTC final just weeks away, starting on June 11 against South Africa at Lord’s, selectors now have the evidence needed to back the towering Perth product to return to the international arena for the first time since September 2024 as a specialist batter.
Green, who reached his century with a classy pull shot to the fence, revealed he was extra hungry to make the runs in front of the Gloucestershire faithful after they embraced the ***********’s arrival, via mystery donor, for five matches.
“I definitely wanted a good score in front of the fans,” he said.
“They’ve come out in force in the two games I’ve been here, and I’ve never really experienced chanting in my name before, so that was awesome to experience.
“It’s funny what happens. We played a couple of shots, and the crowd got up and about. It sort of felt like we were really on top of them.

“I feel sorry in a way, as it happens to be the same opposition, but you take them when they come.”
Green’s century turns up the heat on incumbent *********** No.3 Marnus Labuschagne, whose first knock for County club Glamorgan ended in a disastrous six-ball globe, dismissed by fellow *********** Harry Conway.
It is believed Green would slot into the Test side at four, meaning Steve Smith would likely need to move to first drop, leaving Labuschagne battling teen sensation Sam Konstas for the opening position.
Green will also have the chance to launch into a monster hundred, sitting not out at stumps on the second day as Gloucestershire respond to Kent’s first innings total of 424.

South Korea’s presidential candidates prepare to face off in first debate
South Korea’s presidential candidates prepare to face off in first debate
SEOUL (Reuters) -South Korea’s presidential candidates will face off in their first TV debate on Sunday evening ahead of a snap election on June 3 to choose a successor to former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was impeached over his short-lived martial law declaration in December.
Sunday’s debate, the first of three TV debates scheduled over the next two weeks, will focus on how to revitalise the struggling economy, one of the hot-button election issues.
Asia’s fourth-largest economy contracted in the first quarter as exports and consumption stalled amid fears over the impact of Washington’s aggressive tariffs and political turmoil at home.
South Korea has begun trade talks with the United States and is seeking a waiver from the tariffs. After U.S. President Donald Trump slapped 25% tariffs on South Korea in April, Seoul was one of the first countries to hold face-to-face talks with Washington, following in the footsteps of Japan.
Lee Jae-myung, the main opposition Democratic Party’s candidate and the frontrunner in the race, has vowed to raise artificial intelligence investment up to 100 trillion won ($71.52 billion) and offer a production tax credit of up to 10% for semiconductors manufactured and sold domestically.
Kim Moon-soo, the presidential candidate for the conservative People Power Party, has pledged to create a government agency dedicated to innovating regulations and invest over 5% of the budget in research and development.
Lee holds a lead with 51% support in the latest Gallup Korea poll released on Friday, with Kim trailing far behind at 29%.
Former President Yoon was ousted last month over his short-lived imposition of martial law on December 3, stoking political turmoil and triggering the election.
Lee called earlier in the day for constitutional reform to allow a four-year, two-term presidency and a two-round system for presidential elections through a referendum.
South Korean presidents currently serve a single five-year term.
He also vowed to curb the presidential right to declare martial law and hold to account those responsible for the December 3 martial law declaration.
“We must gather the people’s strength to root (them) out and strictly hold (them) accountable,” he told a press briefing.

Criminals could fill potholes and clean bins under government plans
Criminals could fill potholes and clean bins under government plans
The government is understood to be developing plans that could see convicted criminals filling potholes and cleaning bins.
As first reported by the Sun on Sunday, the Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood is said to want to expand unpaid work, which she believes to be too lenient.
She is understood to want probation teams to work with councils, so that local authorities are able to assign jobs to offenders.
Private companies would also be able to employ those who are on community sentences.
Offenders would not be paid wages, but the money earned would be paid into a fund for victim’s groups.
It comes as prisons across the country are struggling to deal with overcrowding after the number of offenders behind bars hit a new high.
A government source said: “With prisons so close to collapse, we are going to have to punish more offenders outside of prison.
“We need punishment to be more than just a soft option or a slap on the wrist. If we want to prove that crime doesn’t pay, we need to get offenders working for free – with the salary they would have been paid going back to their victims.”
They added this meant doing the jobs the public “really want them to do – not just scrubbing graffiti, but filling up potholes and cleaning the bins”.
Writing for the Telegraph, Ms Mahmood, who describes herself as a “card-carrying member” of her party’s “law and order wing”, said that “tough community orders work.”
An independent review of sentencing carried out by the former Conservative justice secretary David Gauke is expected to be published this week.
It was commissioned last year after overcrowding led to the early release of thousands of prisoners.
Gauke is understood to be considering recommending the idea of scrapping short prison terms as part of the sentencing review, and is likely to recommend more community-based sentencing to reduce the reliance on imprisonment.
In an interim report, Gauke warned that unless radical changes were made, prisons in England and Wales could run out of cells by early next year.
Ms Mahmood warned that he would “have to recommend bold, and sometimes difficult, measures”.
In her article, she pointed to examples such as the system in Texas, where she said “offenders who comply with prison rules earn an earlier release, while those who don’t are locked up for longer”.
On Wednesday, she announced more than a thousand inmates will be released early to free up spaces in prisons in England and Wales, and that a £4.7bn investment will be used to fund more prisons.
Shadow justice secretary Robert Jenrick said the announcement was “failing to protect the public” – adding “to govern is to choose, and today she’s chosen to release early criminals who’ve reoffended or breached their licences”.

New Subaru Trailseeker unveiled as 375bhp 4WD estate
New Subaru Trailseeker unveiled as 375bhp 4WD estate
The Subaru Trailseeker has been revealed as an electric counterpart to the Outback estate that prioritises off-road capabilities.
Subaru’s first electric car to be developed in-house, it offers four-wheel drive and the same 8.3in (211mm) of ground clearance as the Solterra electric SUV.
The machine will launch first in the USA in early 2026, but will be a key part of Subaru’s plans to expand its EV line-up in Europe – although it has yet to be confirmed if the Trailseeker name will be used.
The Solterra is twinned with the Toyota bZ4X, and while the Trailseeker shares the same platform as those machines it has been conceived purely as a Subaru. Inoue Masahiko, Subaru’s EV product manager, said it featured about 70% Subaru parts and would be built at one of the firm’s factories, while the Solterra is manufactured by Toyota.
The Trailseeker packs a pair of 201bhp motors (one per axle) that offer a maximum system output of 375bhp, enabling a 0-60mph sprint time of 4.4sec. The Solterra features a smaller motor on the rear axle, and Inoue-san said the decision to offer two identical motors was made by Subaru to optimise its all-wheel-drive performance.
The machine’s 74.kWh lithium lithium ion battery yields a range of 260 miles (on the US’s EPA test cycle, rather than Europe’s more lenient WLTP standard) and can be charged at rates of up to 150kW, so a 10-80% fill can take less than 35 minutes.
It can tow loads of up to 1588kg and offers several drive models for surfaces including snow and deep mud, as well as a hill descent control system.
Inside, it’s said to offer slightly more cargo space than the Solterra, putting it on a par with the Outback.
There’s a 14.0in infotainment touchscreen (the biggest fittest in a Subaru yet) and a high-set digital instrument panel too.
Subaru has yet to announce pricing, but the Trailseeker is likely to be positioned above the Solterra.
Deliveries will begin early next year in the US, with the *** and other European markets close behind.
As well as revealing the Trailseeker and a heavily revised Solterra at the New York motor show, Subaru has confirmed it will launch two more EVs this year – although only one of those will come to Europe.
While Subaru has yet to reveal details it’s possible that – as the Solterra is twinned with the Toyota bZ4X – this will be a restyled version of the new Toyota C-HR+. The two firms have an extended partnership to develop more joint EV models, although Subaru is working on its own purely developed in-house EVs for 2028 onwards.

Abortion a matter for states, territories: Liberal senator Anne Ruston
Abortion a matter for states, territories: Liberal senator Anne Ruston
A senior Liberal senator has not confirmed if the Coalition’s position on abortion could change, as the opposition rethinks its national platform in the wake of its election decimation.
Labor’s landslide win on May 3 left the Liberals leaderless and exposed severe tensions within the Coalition, with the Nationals faring far better than their blue colleagues and therefore demanding more power.
The Liberal and National party leaders have been hashing out a Coalition agreement, which includes a review of policies.
Anne Ruston — who was opposition health spokeswoman under Peter Dutton — on Sunday kept tight-lipped about whether abortion was up for debate after a push from some in her party.

“As far as I’m concerned, the issue of abortion is something that’s well and truly in the domain of the states and territories and should stay there,” Senator Ruston told the ABC.
“But my understanding is that there is no proposal to make any changes in relation to the small amount of responsibility that the federal parliament has for this.”
Nationals senator Matt Canavan and Liberals senator Alex Antic co-sponsored a bill last year that aimed to force doctors to save a child born alive after an abortion.
A parliamentary inquiry found no basis for the bill and Mr Dutton had ordered the Coalition senators to withdraw it — an order they refused.
The bill would be an unprecedented use of federal powers on the issue.
Abortion access is legal in all states and territories, but it is not federally or constitutionally protected.

Senior Nationals senator Bridget McKenzie has described abortion as a “moral dilemma”, while Jacinta Nampijinpa Price — whose shock defection to the Liberal party room added greatly to the Coalition’s internal tensions — tried to put abortion on the national agenda after a vote to wind back access narrowly failed in South Australia last year.
It also popped up in the Queensland state election.
Senator Ruston played down commentary the Liberal Party has shifted too far to the right, saying her party was a “broad church”.
“That’s where we work best, when we’re tolerant of the broad range of views that we have, but our values are all the same,” she said.
“I don’t think anybody in my party doesn’t believe that aspiration is the most important thing we should strive to be able to enable every *********** to be able to achieve.”
Senator Ruston added she was “very happy to be re-elected and looking forward to being part of the broader team nationally to rebuild our party in the interests of a party that reflects modern Australia”.

Australia ’up for a deal’ with the EU after years of trade talks
Australia ’up for a deal’ with the EU after years of trade talks
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said Australia is “up for a deal” with the European Union, sounding a note of cautious optimism after years of trade negotiations.
“We support free and fair trade,” he said on a visit to Rome, where he is meeting with world leaders including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. “We’re up for a deal, but not any deal at any price.”
The two sides have for years negotiated a trade pact worth billions. Last year, they struck an agreement to boost cooperation and investment in critical minerals, part of a drive by the West to loosen China’s grip on supply chains of materials essential to high-tech and green manufacturing.
Mr Albanese also addressed farm exports – one of the negotiations’ sticking points – and said that Europe hasn’t been willing to meet Australia’s demands for access to its market, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. But he didn’t mention easing a luxury car tax on European autos, which face a 5 per cent tariff in Australia, according to the newspaper.
The EU’s ambassador to Australia hinted this month that the bloc was open to compromise on the continued use of names like feta and prosecco by *********** culinary producers – something that the EU previously opposed – the Herald reported earlier.
Mr Albanese, who was re-elected this month, maintained that the names of such products are tied to the country’s rich European migrant heritage and shouldn’t be changed under a trade deal.
“The naming rights of those products are related to migrants from Europe who’ve come to Australia and produce products that they continue to call feta or prosecco because they’re based upon the heritage,” Mr Albanese said, according to comments cited by the Herald.
