Wealthy shoppers spend on jewelry only if it’s the right brand Wealthy shoppers spend on jewelry only if it’s the right brand A shopper passes a jewelry display in the window of a Van Cleef & Arpels luxury goods store, operated by Cie. Richemont SA, on via Montenapoleone in Milan, Italy. Bloomberg | Getty Images With a diamond encrusted ring here and a rare gemstone necklace there, the world’s wealthiest are continuing to adorn themselves with the finest jewelry even as broader luxury shoppers pull back. But make no mistake, one mother-of-pearl bracelet is not to be confused with another. As the super rich grow even more selective, increasingly only the best will do. That spells positive news for Swiss luxury group Richemont, which boasts some of the luxury jewelry market’s most sought-after brands, including Van Cleef & Arpels, Buccellati and Cartier. “Richemont’s jewelry brands are really at the top of consumer desirability,” Luca Solca, sector head for global luxury goods at Bernstein, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Europe.” “There’s no debate. Despite the efforts by LVMH to challenge this leadership, I think that other brands are clearly behind.” Richemont on Friday reported better-than-expected fiscal fourth-quarter sales, led by 11% growth within its Jewellery Maisons division. For the full year, jewelry was also the group’s strongest segment, growing 8%. The results round off a results season in which major luxury names from LVHM to Kering and Burberry reported a slowdown in sales in the quarter to March, dashing earlier hopes of a turnaround in the embattled sector. Sales within LVMH’s watch and jewelry division, specifically, were flat year-on-year in the first quarter, having declined 2% on an organic basis in 2024 amid softer demand for key brands such as Tiffany & Co, Bvlgari, TAG Heuer and Hublot. “We are gaining market share in jewelry, from branded and non-branded companies,” Richemont’s chairman Johann Rupert said during an earnings call Friday. Watches fall out of fashion Despite the continued allure of its jewelry brands, however, Richemont is not entirely immune to wider sectoral headwinds. The performance of its Specialist Watchmakers division, which features Piaget and Roger Dubuis, paints a more nuanced picture. Richemont’s watch sales fell 13% in 2024, led primarily by weakness in China. That rate of decline eased only slightly in the second half of the year, thanks to recovering strength in the Americas. “The global watch market experienced a slowdown affecting volumes. This was led by demand weakness in China, with greater resilience of high-end price segments,” the company said in its report. Everybody and their dog has bought a watch out of Covid-19 and that will take a while to digest. Luca Solca sector head for global luxury goods at Bernstein Clouding the picture further, many other premium Swiss watchmakers including Rolex, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet, are privately owned, making their performance difficult to decipher. Macroeconomics aside, however, Bernstein’s Solca said the fundamental nature of the luxury watch market — where products are typically positioned as long-term, if not lifetime, purchases — inevitably makes it slow to rebound. “Everybody and their dog has bought a watch out of Covid-19 and that will take a while to digest. So I expect watches to be on the backfoot for a while longer,” he said. “People buy jewelry more frequently, and jewelry has become also cheaper relative to handbags last year, hence the better dynamic in that category.” Possible headwinds The growth of the high-end jewelry market versus other haute couture staples such as fashion and leather goods could stand Richemont in good stead amid resurging global trade headwinds. Richemont’s Rupert said Friday that the company would not take price increases that it cannot sustain, contrasting warnings of prices rises from other luxury and jewelry players. Nevertheless, analysts warn that the company may yet face challenges that threaten market dominance. “Richemont continues to face several significant headwinds including the strength of the Swiss franc against the dollar, higher gold prices and the impact of tariffs,” Mould added. (KFOR) — Another Oklahoma teacher has been accused of being inappropriate with a student. Jacqueline Stone, now a former 7th-grade math teacher at Anadarko Middle School, was arrested and charged with nine counts of lewd or indecent acts to a child under 16. New court documents show the 7th-grade middle school teacher engaged in ******* acts with a 13-year-old for several months. Among the accusations listed, there was forcible kissing, touching, and forcing the student to touch her. Former Oklahoma teacher arrested on child exploitation charges Leaders with Anadarko Public Schools sent News 4 the following statement: On April 16, 2025 parents of an Anadarko Public Schools’ student made school officials aware of what they felt were inappropriate actions between a teacher and their middle school aged child. Upon our review of the information provided by the parents, the district immediately placed the teacher on administrative leave and contacted the Anadarko Police Department as well as the Department of Human Services. Jacqueline Stone taught 7th grade Math at Anadarko Middle School and is no longer a teacher in our district. Anadarko Public Schools has cooperated fully with the Anadarko Police Department in assisting them with their investigation as our number one goal is to always protect the children that have been entrusted to us by their parents. Anadarko Public Schools On top of that, Stone is now one of seven teachers that the State Department of Education has banned from teaching for life. It is all part of a new agency policy. State Superintendent Ryan Walters says teachers who are banned are placed into a national database to notify other states and school systems. Stone has pleaded not guilty and was released from jail on a $45,000 bond. Her next court hearing is set to take place in August. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 8. All-round fun camera gets even better All-round fun camera gets even better It is no mean feat to make a camera that can capture a 360-degree views, so it’s not unsurprising it has taken a while to get things right. Regular readers will remember I was impressed with the Insta360 X4 when I road-tested it earlier this year but issues like poor low-light performance, fragile lenses, and time-consuming editing still left some users frustrated. Camera IconThe new Insta360 X5, front and back. Credit: Insta360 One of the main problems is 360-degree cameras use two ultra wide-angle lenses to capture every angle at the same time, and processing all that data needs a serious amount of computing power. Insta360 has addressed those issues with the new X5, which has just been released. A company spokesperson says the X5’s new triple AI chip system works like a relay race and boosts the overall performance by 14 per cent. “Two pro imaging chips handle the first stage of image processing, reducing noise and boosting brightness right from the source. Then, a dedicated 5nm AI chip takes over, refining that data with deep-learning algorithms to enhance texture, detail, and colour. Each chip has a specialised job, and together, they create visuals that are brighter, clearer, and more lifelike — especially in the dark,” the spokesperson says. What’s new? Two new 1/1.28-inch sensors and a triple AI chip deliver a significant improvement in image quality with better clarity and detail — particularly when shooting in low light. A new InstaFrame mode, which simultaneously captures 360-degree and flat video, offers users a ready-to-share flat video with a choice of fixed perspectives or an auto-follow option that keeps you in the frame while also recording a 360-degree video. The innovative Active HDR Video feature has been upgraded so it can capture better details and colours in both highlights and shadows at 5.7K at 60fps. Insta360 has designed a new lens replacement kit that allows users to easily replace a damaged lens. It’s still highly recommended to attach a lens guard (like a UV filter which many of us fit to our regular camera lenses) — but now, if the worst happens, they are easily replaced with the new lens kit. A new built-in wind guard with a multi-layered wind mesh and an upgraded algorithm combine to offer clearer audio in high-wind situations — and the X5 has improved IP68 waterproofing that allows users to take it down to 15m without a dive housing. Camera IconWith the invisible selfie stick feature, you can create drone-like vision. Credit: Insta360Using the X5 The narrow rectangular camera is unlike any other camera in the action camera category in both looks and ability. It’s about the size of a Mars bar with two dome-like lenses on either side that enable it to capture amazing 360-degree vision via the twin lenses and sensors. It has a bright touchscreen on one side with intuitive access to tap and change settings and shooting modes. The X5 has a six-axis gyroscope with horizon lock for smooth and steady shots and a new twist-to-shoot feature that enables shooting by twisting the selfie stick back and forth. You can also activate the shooting mode by voice, gesture, or a wireless remote. The camera can, like other action cameras, be attached to just about anything and capture high-quality stills and video of your daring deeds. The X5 is ideal for solo travellers and creators because you can shoot and choose your angles later. The invisible selfie stick effect enables you to capture otherwise impossible third-person or drone-like shots. The new InstaFrame mode makes it all much easier to capture and share your vision than ever before. Simply hit record and the X5 produces two files. The first is an instantly shareable flat video with no editing or reframing needed. You have the choice of a fixed view that follows a constant direction, or a selfie view that keeps you in frame throughout. And because the X5 captures 360-degree vision at the same time, there is no wondering “did I frame that right?” or fears of missing an epic moment. Camera IconWith the invisible selfie stick feature, you don’t need anyone’s help to create a third person’s view. Credit: Insta360Post-capture tools The Insta360 app is a sophisticated yet user-friendly app for editing your 360-degree content, and to coincide with the X5’s launch, it has undergone a revamp with a sleeker user interface and new tools that make editing easier than ever. A one-tap dewarp button removes fish-eye distortion for natural-looking footage, and there’s a new option for one-tap export with no editing or reframing. This is in addition to existing features such as Quick Edit and AI Edit for semi-automatic and automatic editing, and Shot Lab with 40-plus AI templates, as well as a full manual editing suite. More advanced editing can be done with Insta360 Studio which, like the mobile app, is free. The X5 is compatible with Insta360+, a cloud service offering auto file backup, instant sharing of 360-degree footage, cloud editing, and export. The verdict When I tested the Insta360 X4 I said I loved it, and the X5 is even better! It’s a fun camera to use and it allows you to capture some amazing vision. The unusual points of view and special effects you can capture with it are only limited by your imagination. It is easy to use, and the 360-degree capture “shoot first and frame later” means you don’t miss a thing. It feels well made and able to stand up to the rigours expected of an action camera — especially now you can change the lenses if they get damaged. It is definitely a cool and fun addition to any camera tool kit. Camera IconThe new Insta360 X5. 11. ‘Saturday Night Live’ Opens With “Fake” Donald Trump Defending Qatar’s “Gift” Of A Jumbo Jet — An Hour After The Real POTUS Did The Same ‘Saturday Night Live’ Opens With “Fake” Donald Trump Defending Qatar’s “Gift” Of A Jumbo Jet — An Hour After The Real POTUS Did The Same Saturday Night Live opened its Season 50 finale with the show’s Donald Trump (James Austin Johnson) taking his seat in the audience and saying farewell until the fall. “After tonight, you won’t be seeing me here for a while,” said Johnson’s Trump. “Well, not the fake, fun version of me that makes you smile. The real one will still be omnipresent. You can’t escape me, right? I’m everywhere, even in your dreams, like the late, great Freddy Krueger.” More from Deadline Johnson was right: the real president has been posting on Truth Social throughout the evening, including an attack on ABC News for its report that he is planning to accept a $400 million plane from Qatar, to be used as Air Force One and later for his presidential library. That gift of a 747 was the subject of some of the quips earlier in the sketch, as Trump, speaking to Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, relished in his deal-making trip to the Middle East and all the love and affection shown to him. “The Qataris gave me a $400 million plane, can you believe that? And people said that it was some sort of a bribe. Not true, not true. Because they haven’t asked for anything in return.” The crown prince chimed in, “Well, not yet.” Trump responded, “So it’s a pre-bribe. But now people are saying I should really be flying in an American plane. Ah, no thanks, sonny. Have you seen what is going on with our planes?” About an hour before SNL, the real Trump was insisting this evening that the plane was not a gift to him personally. In a Truth Social post, he again appeared to be threatening ABC News, which broke the story on Sunday. The real Trump wrote, “Everyone, including their lawyers, has been told that ABC must not say that Qatar is giving ME a FREE Boeing 747 Airplane, because they are not. Instead, and as Fake News ABC fully knows and understands, this highly respected country is donating the plane to the United States Air Force/ Defense Department, AND NOT TO ME. By so doing, they are saving our country, and the American Taxpayer, hundreds of millions of dollars. ABC Fake News is one of the WORST.” The Qatar gift has drawn criticism not just from Democrats, but from some Republicans and those who have otherwise defended the president. In his weeklong trip in the Middle East, Trump also showered praise on MBS, even though U.S. intelligence concluded that he approved the 2018 ******* of Jamal Khashoggi, a journalist for The Washington Post. “I didn’t make this trip for myself,” SNL‘s Trump told MBS. “I want to make that clear. I did this for the American people, and in many ways myself, my personal enrichment. I did that too.” The sketch concluded with Johnson “breaking the fourth wall” by walking off the stage to the audience. Trump told MBS, “Gonna have to leave. You know what? Because it is the SNL season finale. Season 50 — worst one yet!” Sitting down with a group of women, he told them, “It’s nice here, with all the young pretty people. Look at her — wow. Sevens and more, sit on the floor, six and below to the bleachers you go.” He added, “That’s like a Gutfeld joke. Kind of rhymed, right?” Watch it above. 14. Poles vote for a new president as security concerns loom large Poles vote for a new president as security concerns loom large WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poles are voting Sunday in a presidential election at a time of heightened security concerns stemming from the ongoing war in neighboring Ukraine and growing worry that the U.S. commitment to Europe’s security could be weakening under President Donald Trump. The top two front-runners are Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski, a liberal allied with Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and Karol Nawrocki, a conservative historian with no prior political experience who is supported by the national conservative Law and Justice party. Recent opinion polls show Trzaskowski with around 30% support and Nawrocki in the mid-20s. A second round between the two is widely expected to take place on June 1. The election is also a test of the strength of other forces, including the far right. Sławomir Mentzen, a hard-right candidate who blends populist MAGA rhetoric with libertarian economics and a critical stance toward the European Union, has been polling in third place. Ten other candidates are also on the ballot. With such a crowded field and a requirement that a candidate receive more than 50% of the vote to win outright, a second round seemed all but inevitable. Polling stations opened at 7 a.m. (0500GMT) and close at 9 p.m. (1900GMT). Exit polls will be released when voting ends, with results expected by Tuesday, possibly Monday. Polish authorities have reported attempts at foreign interference during the campaign, including denial-of-service attacks targeting parties in Tusk’s coalition on Friday and allegations by a state research institute that political ads on Facebook were funded from abroad. Although Poland’s prime minister and parliament hold primary authority over domestic policy, the presidency carries substantial power. The president serves as commander of the armed forces, plays a role in foreign and security policy, and can veto legislation. The conservative outgoing president, Andrzej Duda, has repeatedly used that power over more than the past year to hamper Tusk’s agenda, for example blocking ambassadorial nominations and using his veto power to resist reversing judicial and media changes made during Law and Justice’s time in power from 201 to late 2023. A Trzaskowski victory could be expected to end such a standoff. He has pledged to support reforms to the courts and public media, both of which critics say were politicized under Law and Justice. Tusk’s opponents say he has also politicized public media. Nawrocki, who leads a state historical institute, has positioned himself as a defender of conservative values and national sovereignty. 16. Margaret River Pro put on hold as World Surf League organisers await ******* swell on Tuesday Margaret River Pro put on hold as World Surf League organisers await ******* swell on Tuesday Competition has been put on hold at the Margaret River Pro for two days as organisers await the arrival of big swell and more favourable winds mid-week. The championship tour event started Saturday when the 10-day window for competition opened with both men’s and women’s opening rounds completed in 4-6ft conditions at Main Break. But with smaller conditions on offer Sunday, and the prospect of 6-8ft swell on Tuesday and Wednesday, World Surf League officials opted to wait to resume. The next call will be made at 7am on Tuesday. “After we had a good look at the conditions, we decided to call the event off for the day,” WSL deputy commissioner Renato Hickel said. “The swell is declining and the Cape Naturaliste buoy had declined since 4.30 am this morning, and there is not much energy on the swell, really weak waves, 2-3ft max. “With the swell on offer for the remainder of the waiting *******, we decided to wait for the next swell, which looks like it’s going to be this coming Tuesday. “Potentially a really big powerful swell with the chance for running heats at The Box, so fingers crossed.” The prospect of heats running at The Box, a slab wave a few hundred metres north of Main Break that offers deep barrels with the right conditions, will please local favourite Jack Robinson, who called for organisers to take advantage of the iconic break ahead of this year’s event. “I think it’s calling for it, and I think it’s about time we ran there,” Robinson said on Friday. “Everyone wants to see it and I think it would be great to watch.” When competition does resume, veteran Aussie Sally Fitzgibbons will face a must-win elimination round heat to keep her hopes of avoiding the mid-season cut alive. The 12-time winner on tour and three-time world title runner-up needs a deep run in Margaret River to have any hope of staying on tour but was relegated to the elimination round after a heartbreaking loss in the dying seconds of her opening round heat on Saturday. She will face recent Gold Coast Pro winner Bettylou Sakura Johnson and teenage local qualifier Willow Hardy in the elimination round. On the men’s side, qualifier Jacob Willcox will be hoping for a better heat in his home conditions after struggling to find the right waves in his opening round loss. The crowd favourite will face fellow Aussie Ryan Callinan and Barron Mamiya of Hawaii for the chance to advance to the round-of-32. 17. reporting on the doctors on Big Pharma’s payroll reporting on the doctors on Big Pharma’s payroll Every so now and then I’ll encounter a database that’s a real feat of engineering. Despite aggregating an enormous amount of data, it works seamlessly and is intuitive to use for members of the public and researchers alike. Open Payments is one of those databases: It publishes tens of millions of transaction records every year, allowing patients to see how much money their doctors have received from pharma and medical device companies within seconds. At nearly 750,000 entries, the dataset of transactions between companies and medical practitioners in Cincinnati was extensive. It covered $136 million worth of payments over the past seven years and is the largest dataset I have analyzed on the job. Elizabeth B. Kim While it required many rounds of analysis, gut checks, and calls and texts with those more data savvy than I – Open Payments allowed me to identify the highest earning doctors in industry payments in the Cincinnati area and interview them. Writing this story has reinforced my belief that often, the data is the story. Having access to a detailed, easily searchable, and publicly available database also allowed me to ask readers to search their own doctors and relay what they found back to me. A dozen readers responded to our survey, while a few more wrote emails. People wrote in about their primary care doctors, surgeons and cardiologists, who received payments ranging from less than $100 to millions of dollars. They worked at TriHealth, UC Health, Bon Secours Mercy Health, and Christ Hospital, along with a couple private equity-owned physician groups. Using the database elicited varying reactions in readers. Joan Doyle, who was disappointed to find at least a dozen of her family’s doctors had received industry money, had mixed feelings. She said she loves her doctors but wondered what their industry ties might mean for the quality and cost of care provided to herself, her husband and their daughter. Sandy Pittman, of Cleves, felt differently. “I really don’t care, because I trust my doctors enough,” shared Pittman, who looked up the records of her cardiologist. “That’s the biggest thing.” This article originally appeared on Cincinnati Enquirer: Reporting on the doctors on Big Pharma’s payroll Source link #reporting #doctors #Big #Pharmas #payroll Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
