In a tense meeting, Trump makes the South African president watch videos promoting baseless claims of ‘white genocide’
In a tense meeting, Trump makes the South African president watch videos promoting baseless claims of ‘white genocide’
WASHINGTON — What started as a friendly first meeting between President Donald Trump and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa quickly devolved after a reporter asked Trump about the U.S. decision to admit white South Africans as refugees.
Trump baselessly claimed that there was a genocide against white people in South Africa, which Ramaphosa and other South Africans have vigorously denied.
Wednesday’s heated meeting marks the latest in a string of unusually tense Oval Office meetings with foreign leaders. It comes amid heightened tensions between the U.S. and South Africa over claims by Trump and Elon Musk about the country’s racial equity laws, which prompted the U.S. to recently admit white South African refugees — while barring refugees from other countries.
Musk, who was born in South Africa, has gone further, repeatedly claiming there is a genocide against white people in the country — comments that Trump eventually began echoing.
After reporters asked about his genocide claims, Trump paused to play a montage of clips that he argued backed up his claims on a television in the room.
Ramaphosa responded to the montage, which included videos of people talking about “cutting the throat” and shooting white people, saying that the comments in the videos are “not government policy.” Later, South Africa’s minister of agriculture said that multiple people included in the montage were part of ********* parties that are not in the country’s ruling coalition.
“We have a multiparty democracy in South Africa that allows people to express themselves,” he said.
Asked whether he denounced the language in the video, Ramaphosa said, “Oh, yes.”
When asked by NBC News earlier in the meeting about the White House’s decision to admit white South Africans, Trump claimed that “a lot of people are very concerned with regard to South Africa.”
“We take from many, many locations, if we feel there’s persecution or genocide going on,” Trump said.
Musk joined Wednesday’s meeting alongside several Cabinet officials. Musk has been a staunch critic of his birth country.
Trump and Musk have claimed that the Afrikaners, white descendants of Dutch and French settlers, were targets of a “genocide” — even though there is no data to support it. The administration admitted 59 white South Africans as refugees this month after they claimed they were fleeing violence and discrimination. South African leaders have fiercely disputed the genocide claims.
“We all know as South Africans, both ****** and white, that there’s no genocide here,” Ramaphosa said last week in a video clip on X. “We are not genocidal. We are not committing any act of hatred, act of retribution or violence against anyone.”
The leaders’ Oval Office meeting kicked off with Trump saying that Ramaphosa was “a little bit less respected” by some.
“He is a man who is, certainly, in some circles, really respected,” Trump said of Ramaphosa. “Other circles, a little bit less respected, like all of us, in all fairness.”
Ramaphosa responded, “We’re all like that,” laughing.
There were 12 murders on farms last year, The Associated Press reported, citing police statistics. One of the victims was a farmer, and the rest were farmworkers, none of whom were identified by race, according to the AP. White farmers own roughly three-quarters of South Africa’s privately owned land, according to government data.
The White House has also criticized South Africa’s 2024 Expropriation Act, which allows the government, in some cases, to seize unused land without compensation or when there is public interest in redistributing it (a process similar to eminent domain laws in the United States).
Ramaphosa said in February that his government has not confiscated land.
“The recently adopted Expropriation Act is not a confiscation instrument, but a constitutionally mandated legal process that ensures public access to land in an equitable and just manner as guided by the constitution,” he said on X.
Still, the White House claimed that the law was a “shocking disregard of its citizens’ rights” and alleged that it followed actions “fueling disproportionate violence against racially disfavored landowners.”
Afrikaners ruled the country during the apartheid regime, which ended in 1994. During apartheid rule, Afrikaners enforced racial segregation and confiscated land from ****** residents.
Musk has also claimed that Starlink, his satellite internet service, is “not allowed to operate in South Africa, because I’m not ******.” Starlink would need certain licenses to operate in the country, and South Africa has regulations designed to ensure that a portion of foreign-owned telecommunications licenses are sold to historically disadvantaged groups.
The U.S. and South Africa have also butted heads over the Israel-****** war, after South Africa accused Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. South Africa is leading a case in the United Nations’ International Court of Justice.
The White House referred to the genocide allegations in Trump’s February executive order centering on Afrikaner refugees, saying that “South Africa has taken aggressive positions towards the United States and its allies.”

SNAP benefits, food stamps face cuts under GOP tax bill
SNAP benefits, food stamps face cuts under GOP tax bill

As Republicans push forward with the “big, beautiful” tax bill, federal food assistance may see big cuts.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, may be cut about 30% under the terms of the bill, which would be the “biggest cut in the program’s history,” according to Ty Jones Cox, vice president for food assistance policy at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
SNAP, formerly known as food stamps, currently provides food assistance to more than 40 million individuals including children, seniors and adults with disabilities.
Yet cuts to the program proposed by the House — which would shrink the program’s funding by about $300 billion through 2034 — would put those benefits at risk.
“The House Republican plan would take away food assistance for millions who struggle to afford the high cost of groceries, including families with children and other vulnerable people with low incomes,” Cox said during a Tuesday webinar hosted by the CBPP, a progressive think tank.
The SNAP reform efforts come amid a broader effort to reduce waste and fraud in government programs. SNAP, like other government benefits, can be susceptible to improper or fraudulent payments.
The “one big, beautiful bill restores integrity to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program,” House Agriculture Committee Chairman Glenn “GT” Thompson, R-Pa., said in a May 14 statement, through “long-overdue accountability incentives to control costs and end executive and state overreach.”

Many Americans cite high food costs as a top economic concern, according to an April Pew Research Center survey. If new tariff policies are put into effect, that could prompt food prices to go higher.
Moreover, the proposed SNAP cuts come as some experts say the U.S. is facing higher recession risks. In previous downturns, every additional dollar spent on SNAP generates about $1.54 in returns to the economy, according to Elaine Waxman, senior fellow at the Urban Institute’s tax and income support division.
“People spend SNAP dollars right away, and they spend them locally,” Waxman said.
The proposed SNAP cuts would largely happen by expanding work requirements to qualify for benefits and by cutting federal funding for food benefits and administration and leaving it up to states to make up the difference.
Federal cuts would leave states with tough choices
The largest cut to SNAP would come from federal funding cuts to basic SNAP benefits ranging from 5% to 25% starting in 2028, according to CBPP.
It would then be up to states to find ways to make up for that benefit shortfall, which could include making it more difficult to enroll in the program or finding other localized cuts to the program, according to CBPP.
“The change in the bill that is most dramatic is asking states to share part of the benefit cost,” Waxman said. “That’s new; since SNAP was originated, the federal government has always paid the full cost of the benefits.”
Notably, it would also mark the first time in the history of SNAP that the federal government would no longer ensure children in every state have access to food benefits, according to CBPP.
In addition, the proposal also seeks to make it so states pay a larger portion of the program’s administrative costs.
How states may react to the changes may vary. In worst-case scenarios, some states could even opt out of the program altogether, according to CBPP.
However, Waxman said most states will likely try to protect benefits because they’re “so critical,” even though they are not legally obligated to offer the program.
“The vast majority, if not all, will try to do something,” Waxman said.
In addition to the benefits SNAP provides to individuals and families, it also provides an “integral” part of economies, Waxman said. In lower-income rural areas, for example, rural grocery stores that rely on SNAP customers would see food spending go down.
“It has all these ripples that will hurt a lot of people other than just the people who are on the program,” Waxman said.
Work requirements may cost families $254 per month

Work requirements for SNAP already make it so certain individuals must work at least 80 hours per month to qualify for the program’s benefits. That includes individuals ages 18 to 54 who are able to work and who have no dependents. Current policy also limits SNAP benefits for certain individuals to three months within a 36-month ******* unless work requirements are met.
The proposed legislation would expand that those work requirements, according to the Urban Institute, by:
extending the requirements to households with children, unless they have a child under age seven;
expanding the work requirements and time limits to individuals ages 55 through 64;
limiting states’ flexibility to request waivers of the work requirement policies in high unemployment areas; and
reducing discretionary exemptions from the time limits that states may provide.
Expanded work requirements would affect 2.7 million families and 5.4 million individuals, according to a new report from the Urban Institute.
That includes 1.5 million families who would lose benefits entirely and 1.2 million families who would receive lower benefits. It also includes 1.8 million people, including 48,000 children, who would lose benefits entirely; and 3.6 million people, including 1.5 million children, who would receive lower benefits, according to the Urban Institute.
Families that lose some or all their benefits would lose $254 per month on average, according to the research. Meanwhile, families with children would lose $229 per month on average, the Urban Institute found.

US president confronts South African leader with claim of Afrikaners ‘persecuted’
US president confronts South African leader with claim of Afrikaners ‘persecuted’
Watch moment Trump confronts South Africa’s president with video
US President Donald Trump has confronted South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House with a video that the US president said supports his claim that white farmers are being “persecuted” in the country.
The footage shown during a news conference with the South African leader purported to show the gravesites of murdered farmers. Trump did not say where it was filmed, and the footage has not been verified by the BBC.
Ramaphosa – who appeared to weigh up carefully how to respond – disputed Trump’s allegation. He said ****** people were far more likely to be victims of violence in South Africa than white people.
Trump also said he would seek an “explanation” from his guest on widely discredited claims of a white “genocide” in South Africa.
Ramaphosa came to the White House on Wednesday for trade talks to reset US-South African relations.
He had hoped to charm Trump with the inclusion of two of South Africa’s best-known golfers in the delegation. Ramaphosa also came equipped with a gift of a huge book featuring his country’s golf courses.
But after a cordial start, the mood in the Oval Office shifted as Trump asked for the lighting to be lowered so a video could be played.
The film featured the voice of leading South African opposition figure Julius Malema singing the song: “Shoot the Boer [Afrikaner], Shoot the farmer”.
It also showed a field of crosses, which the US president, talking over the images, said was a burial site of white farmers.
He then handed Ramaphosa what appeared to be print-outs of stories of white people being attacked in South Africa.
“What you saw – the speeches that were made… that is not government policy,” Ramaphosa responded.
“We have a multiparty democracy in South Africa that allows people to express themselves.
“Our government policy is completely against what he [Malema] was saying even in the parliament and they are a small ********* party, which is allowed to exist according to our constitution.”
Watch: Trump greets South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa at White House
Ramaphosa said he hoped that Trump would listen to the voices of South Africans on this issue.
The South African leader pointed out the white members of his delegation, including golfers Ernie Els and Retief Goosen, and South Africa’s richest man Johann Rupert.
“If there was a genocide, these three gentlemen would not be here,” Ramaphosa said.
Trump interrupted: “But you do allow them to take land, and then when they take the land, they kill the white farmer, and when they kill the white farmer nothing happens to them.”
“No,” Ramaphosa responded.
Ramaphosa did acknowledge that there was “criminality in our country… people who do get killed through criminal activity are not only white people, the majority of them are ****** people”.
As Trump pressed the issue, Ramaphosa stayed calm – and tried to work his charm by making a joke about offering a plane to the US.
He invoked the name of anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, saying South Africa remained committed to racial reconciliation.

South Africa Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen was invited to speak about the experience of farmers
When a journalist asked what would happen if white farmers left South Africa, Ramaphosa deflected the question to his white agriculture minister, John Steenhuisen, who said that most farmers wanted to stay.
But Trump kept firing salvoes at Ramaphosa, who avoided entering into a shouting match with him – something that happened to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky when he met Trump in the same room in February.
Earlier this month, a group of 59 white South Africans arrived in the US, where they were granted refugee status. Ramaphosa said at the time they were “cowards”.
Before Wednesday’s White House meeting, South Africa’s leader had stressed that improving trade relations with the US was his priority.
South African exports into the US face a 30% tariff once a pause on Trump’s new import taxes ends in July.
Watch: Rubio and Kaine clash over white South African refugees
Tensions between South Africa and the US ramped up days after Trump took office for his second term in January.
It was at that point that Ramaphosa signed into law a controversial bill allowing South Africa’s government to expropriate privately owned land without compensation in certain circumstances, when it is deemed “equitable and in the public interest”.
This only served to tarnish the image of Africa’s biggest economy in the eyes of the Trump administration – already angered by its genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
In February, the US president announced the suspension of critical aid to South Africa and offered to allow members of the Afrikaner community – who are mostly white descendants of early Dutch and French settlers – to settle in the US as refugees.
South Africa’s ambassador to Washington, Ebrahim Rasool, was also expelled in March after accusing Trump of “mobilising a supremacism” and trying to “project white victimhood as a dog whistle”.

Expedition 33 Have a Canon Ending?
Expedition 33 Have a Canon Ending?
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has two distinct endings, and neither of them is canon. Which is good, as it doesn’t lock the franchise to one true ending. Every player can have a unique experience, and doesn’t have to do extra things to get the true ending.
However, there is a teeny tiny little problem, neither of them is easy to digest. If you haven’t finished the game, you shouldn’t go forward beyond this point, as there are minor spoilers. You can read through it once you finish it. Alternatively, you can use this piece as a reference to pick which one.
The ending of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is just as intended
There is no good or evil. | Image Credit: Sandfall Interactive
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has a lot of ups and downs in the story, just like Esquie states them as Wees and Woos. The same applies to the ending of the game as well, as it asks the player to make a hard choice. Basically, it’s about choosing between Verso and Maelle for the ending.
Guillaume Broche sat down with two French YouTubers (Joueur du Grenier) for an interview of sorts with two other members of Sandfall Entertainment. During which the YouTubers expressed their views on the ending, as it seems like the Verso ending is the good ending. However, Broche clarified the doubt regarding the ending.
According to Broche, he didn’t want the story to have a jolly ending, as he wanted a bit of debate. To him, good stories have multiple layers to them, instead of being ****** and white. He tried to move beyond the compass of good and evil, which makes players think.
It’s not just the YouTubers who feel that way, but rather the members of Sandfall Interactive feel the same. Some of the members also think Verso is a “piece of trash,” while others think he’s a hero. It showcases that the idea behind the ending did work out.
What do fans think about the ending of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33?
The fans are divided when it comes to sharing their thoughts on the ending of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. While it may seem that the Maelle ending is negative, it isn’t the case. There is a depth to it that many can ignore by sticking to morals or favoritism.
Comment byu/PileBunker2 from discussion inexpedition33
Regardless, people appreciate the writing and their thoughts about making the endings. There is no clear good ending; rather, it’s bittersweet. It leaves players to think and analyse the game’s storyline and the theme it portrays. Just like a piece of art, which is subjective to all.
Still, there are some complaints regarding the storyline. Some feel that the game should have built upon the themes more to shape the idea better. Maybe setting up characters like Maelle, Verso, and Renoir could have impacted people more. Otherwise, the story feels vague during Act 3 of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Comment byu/PileBunker2 from discussion inexpedition33
Comment byu/PileBunker2 from discussion inexpedition33
Some didn’t like the ending at all. During the interview, it was revealed that Alain Damasio’s novel La Horde du Contrevent had been taken for inspiration. This follows the same idea about the grand twist in the end, which is pretty apparent at the beginning of the game. Yet, these opinions are always subjective.
Do you think the ending of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is good? Do you think there was room for improvement? Let us know in the comments below.

What is the “Golden Dome for America”? Here’s what to know about Trump’s missile defense plan.
What is the “Golden Dome for America”? Here’s what to know about Trump’s missile defense plan.
President Trump’s missile defense project, called the “Golden Dome for America,” aims to protect the U.S. from foreign threats. But it has been criticized by China as threatening to increase the risks of militarizing space and a global arms race.
The president on Tuesday said his administration had “selected an architecture” for the “state-of-the-art system,” which could cost hundreds of billions of dollars and put U.S. weapons in space for the first time in history.
What is the Golden Dome and how will it work?
The Golden Dome is a multilayered defense system that the president, speaking in the Oval Office alongside Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, said will deploy “next-generation technologies across the land, sea and space, including space-based sensors and interceptors.”
“The Golden Dome will be capable of intercepting missiles even if they are launched from other sides of the world and even if they are launched from space,” the president said, adding that he wants it to be operational before his term ends.
The concept includes both ground- and space-based capabilities that would defend against missiles by: detecting and destroying them ahead of launch, intercepting them early in flight, halting them midcourse and stopping them in the last few moments of approaching a target.
The initiative would have multiple layers that expand on what the U.S. already has and build new programs to counter the full range of aerial threats, according to Gen. Gregory Guillot, the head of U.S. Northern Command, who testified in front of Congress in April.
He described a domain awareness layer to track threats and then two other layers, “the first being an ICBM (intercontinental ballistic missile) defeat layer, which largely exists today with the GBIs (ground-based interceptors) that can defeat a North Korean threat and then an air layer that would defeat cruise missiles and air threats.”
“This is not going to be off the cuff,” Tom Karako, the director of the Missile Defense Project at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told CBS News in an interview.
“This is going to be well-rooted in the systems engineering and the understanding of the threat and in the overall architecture plans that have been in the works for a long time,” Karako said.
The new initiative, which will encompass many programs, will be built in states including Florida, Georgia, Indiana and Alaska, according to Mr. Trump, and involve multiple American defense and technology companies that have not yet been selected.
The Congressional Budget Office has estimated a cost of $542 billion for the space-based components alone.
Aerospace and defense company Lockheed Martin, which said on X it is ready to support the dome mission, describes it as a “revolutionary concept.”
“This is a Manhattan Project-scale mission, one that is both urgent and crucial to America’s security,” the company says.
Lockheed Martin COO Frank St. John said it would protect against nuclear missiles, as well as intermediate-range ballistic and cruise missiles, and other threats.
Mr. Trump said U.S. Space Force Gen. Michael Guetlein would be responsible for overseeing the dome’s progress.
However, there is no funding yet to match the plan, which is “still in the conceptual stage,” Air Force Secretary Troy Meink told senators on Tuesday at a hearing. The Pentagon is also still developing the requirements that the dome will have to meet, The Associated Press reported.
Israel’s Iron Dome
The Golden Dome idea first came to public light during Mr. Trump’s joint address to Congress in March, when he asked for funding for it. He said, “Israel has it, other places have it, and the United States should have it, too.”
The president was referring to Israel’s Iron Dome, which at least partially inspired the Golden Dome concept. Israel’s system, installed in 2011 to defend against incoming projectiles, largely addresses shorter-range threats like rockets, while two other air defense systems work to defend against missiles.
The Iron Dome, developed with U.S. backing, has intercepted thousands of rockets and has a success rate topping 90%, according to Israel.
China responds
******** foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said her country urges the U.S. “to abandon the development and deployment of a global missile defense system as soon as possible.”
“The United States, in pursuing a ‘U.S.-first’ policy, is obsessed with seeking absolute security for itself,” she said at a Wednesday briefing in Beijing, according to news agencies. “This violates the principle that the security of all countries should not be compromised and undermines global strategic balance and stability. China is seriously concerned about this.”
She also said the Golden Dome plan “heightens the risk of space becoming a battlefield” and “fuels an arms race.”
When asked about China’s response in an interview on “Fox & Friends First,” Lockheed Martin’s St. John said, “What we’ve seen historically is that the thing that leads to conflict is the lack of deterrence, and so our belief, along with the administration, is that having strong deterrence is the best way to deter conflict.”
A U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency assessment shows that the U.S. military expects, over the coming decade, to contend with missile threats that are greater in “scale and sophistication.” It also said that “China and Russia are developing an array of novel delivery systems to exploit gaps in the current U.S. ballistic missile defenses.”
China has been rapidly developing missile and other military capabilities, while deepening ties with Russia. The two nations said in a statement earlier this month that the dome project was “deeply destabilizing in nature” and would turn space into “an arena for armed confrontation.”
Karako said that the Golden Dome initiative is “a belated realignment of U.S. missile defense policy” to counter both China and Russia, countries that the last two administrations in their national defense strategies have pointed to as strategic competitors.

Cross-sex hormones for under 18s could be restricted or banned
Cross-sex hormones for under 18s could be restricted or banned
Health Secretary Wes Streeting, is “actively reviewing” banning or restricting the private prescription of cross-sex hormones to young people, according to evidence given to the High Court.
Government lawyers say an expert panel will report in July on the use of this type of medication by under 18s wishing to change their gender.
An application by campaigners for a full judicial review of the secretary of state’s handling of the issue was rejected on Wednesday afternoon.
Dismissing the application, Lady Justice Whipple said “the case had moved on substantially” as a result of the government setting up a review in April.
The case calling for a full judicial review was brought after the NHS announced in December last year that under-18s would no longer be prescribed puberty blockers at gender identity clinics.
Campaigners argued that the prescription of cross-sex hormones should also be addressed and criticised the government’s failure to intervene.
But Lady Justice Whipple said it was not “unreasonable or irrational” for the government to address the question of puberty blockers first and later come to cross-sex hormones.
The court in London was also told health officials are looking at “alternative legal mechanisms” to tackle issues around private and overseas providers who prescribe such drugs.
Cross-sex hormones are given to people who identify as a gender that is different to their biological sex. The medication helps someone who is transitioning to develop characteristics associated with their preferred gender.
For instance, it would help a trans man, a biological female who identifies as a man, develop a deeper voice and facial hair. Existing NHS guidance allows the hormones to be prescribed people aged 16 and over.
They differ from puberty blockers, which stop the onset of puberty by suppressing the release of hormones.
Existing NHS guidance allows the hormones to be prescribed to people aged 16 and over.
The case calling for a full judicial review was brought by Keira Bell and two others, who are remaining anonymous.
They wanted a ban on the prescription of cross-sex hormones by non-NHS organisations, such as private clinics and overseas providers.
As a teenager, Ms Bell was given cross-sex hormones after attending the now closed NHS Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) run by the Tavistock clinic.
At the time she identified as male, but says she deeply regrets the decision to take medication that altered her body permanently.
Responding to this afternoon’s judgment she said: “I am relieved that the secretary of state is now actively considering a ban on cross-sex hormones outside of the NHS.
“These powerful drugs should not be given to children and young people.”
Her barrister, Zoe Gannon, had argued that while the health secretary banned the private prescription of puberty suppressing drugs in gender cases involving under-18s, he had “failed or refused” to take the same action in relation to cross-sex hormones, and this was “irrational”.
Iain Steele, barrister for the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), told the court Mr Streeting “is currently seeking clinical and expert advice from NHS England”.
He also said there were a wide range of medical uses for hormones, such as testosterone and oestrogen, which made decisions on whether to restrict or ban their use in different situations complex.
Delivering the judgment rejecting the application for a judicial review, Lady Justice Whipple, sitting with Mr Justice Johnson, said the secretary of state had acted rationally.
She said, “This is an immensely difficult and sensitive area of policy formation where there are strong and genuinely held views on each side of the debate and where there is no consensus.”
She added Mr Streeting was taking practical steps and was therefore entitled to more time to consider the issues.
She continued that it was appropriate that there was an active review and that was to be welcomed.

Mumbai seal final IPL playoffs spot with win over Delhi
Mumbai seal final IPL playoffs spot with win over Delhi
Mumbai Indians have sealed the final play-offs spot in the Indian Premier League with a 59-run victory over Delhi Capitals at Wankhede Stadium.
Delhi, who needed a win to keep their playoffs hopes alive, folded for 121 in 18.2 overs on a tricky wicket in reply to Mumbai’s competitive total of 5-180 on Wednesday.
Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Punjab Kings have already qualified for the playoffs, while there’ll be frustration for Delhi, who became the first team in IPL history to miss the playoffs after winning their first four games.
Delhi didn’t get momentum from the onset in their run-chase as Faf du Plessis, who led the side in the absence of ill Axar Patel, and Lokesh Rahul fell inside the first three overs.
With the ball gripping on the surface and favouring the spinners, Mitchell Santner (3-11) had Nigam caught off his own bowling and Jasprit Bumrah (3-12) pinned Stubbs leg before wicket for three to seal the game.
Delhi had earlier kept Mumbai in check at 5-132 with two overs left before Suryakumar Yadav (73no) and Naman Dhir (24no) excelled in the final two overs, which produced 48 runs for the home team.
Dhir smashed fast bowler Mukesh Kumar (2-48) for two fours and two sixes after Yadav had started the 19th over with a six to complete his half-century off 36 ******.
Sri Lankan fast bowler Dushmanta Chameera (1-54) then gave away further 21 runs in the final over to give Mumbai a decent total to defend.
“We let it slip in the last two overs,” du Plessis said. “Momentum is a real thing in cricket. The way they counter-punched to get almost 50 in the last two overs … undoing the work of the first 17-18 overs, we lost that momentum.”

James Carville Suggests He Would Endorse This Democrat In 2028 Race If They Nab Nomination
James Carville Suggests He Would Endorse This Democrat In 2028 Race If They Nab Nomination
Democratic strategist James Carville is looking to the future and, in a surprising remark about the 2028 presidential election, suggested Tuesday that New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would have his support if she entered the race and nabbed the nomination.
Carville was reacting on MSNBC’s “The Beat with Ari Melber” to a recent poll that saw voters name Ocasio-Cortez as the face of the Democratic Party, even ahead of her more established peers Rep. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and former Vice President Kamala Harris.
“Look, we lost the election,” Carville told Melber. “I don’t like the party. I don’t blame the party reputation for being low, but I think that if AOC wants to run for president and she gets the nominee, then God bless you, you are the leader of the Democratic Party.”
“And whoever gets that nomination is gonna be it, and that’s all,” he continued.
The comment appeared to take Melber by surprise, as Carville recently argued Democrats would be “better off” without progressives like Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez defining the party — and stated quite directly in April that he isn’t “impressed” by either of them.
“Well, here we backed into some intra-party news,” Melber half-jokingly responded Tuesday. “You heard it here first: James Carville, once a critic of the AOC podcast landscape, now says, if you win, you win — and you got his support.”
“If you win, you win!” Carville agreed. “That’s my attitude, you win the election, you got it!”

The strategist initially dismissed the Co/Efficient survey Tuesday as “useless” for polling Democrats and Republicans alike, however, and argued that Ocasio-Cortez only topped it because GOP voters who watch Fox News frequently see her discussed on the air.
Carville, who notably failed to accurately predict last year’s presidential election, went on to claim that those who named Ocasio-Cortez simply picked “the person they’ve been programmed” to and argued that the Democratic Party will find their nominee in “due time.”
“We’re not going to have one until 2028, but boy have we got some talent out there,” Carville told Melber. “And I don’t have a very favorable opinion of the Democratic Party, and I have no idea who the leader of the party is, and I’m not even disturbed.”
“I don’t think the party is in near as bad shape as it’s being portrayed to be,” he added.

Potential Vice City Crossover Teased, Fans Spot GTA 6 Detail
Potential Vice City Crossover Teased, Fans Spot GTA 6 Detail
GTA 6 hype will not go away soon and may not go away at all after its release. For years, Rockstar has garnered a massive fan base by releasing many unforgettable games. One of the most notable ones was Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, which impacted the open-world game industry.
To this date, fans regularly talk bout the classic released in October 2001, and it remains a favorite among many. Fans are now speculating that GTA 6 will have crossovers with Vice City, as it’s a part of the new world. It is fair to say that as Vice City will be a part of the huge map.
GTA 6 fans found that Stinger from Vice City might be there in the main game
There are many things Vice City fans can find uncanny in GTA 6. For instance, in the first trailer, the Vice City beach was shown along with the hotels, which resemble the hotel district near the coast. It also showcases the downtown area, which has gotten a massive graphical overhaul. But we’re not here for this.
Recently, on the r/GTA6 subreddit, a user going by the tag u/thegamingpro54 shared a post. It’s not new to have fans speculating there, but this one has a point. It shows a screengrab from the GTA 6 trailer of the car’s hindside. To be precise, a convertible, that is, dashing through the streets.
Upon closer inspection, it does look similar to the back bumper of the Stinger from GTA Vice City. The front of the car also seems to show similar sharp design features. So it might be possible that they are the same. However, there is a slight difference; the tail light is designed differently.
However, GTA 5 had a feature that let players customize the physical features of cars. So, it could be a modified version of the original. Alternatively, it could be redesigned to fit the aesthetics of the game. To be fair, the old Stinger does look dated in 2025. It does have the ’90s vibe still, but still modern.
What do fans think about this crossover theory?
Why are car enthusiasts so serious? | Image Credit: Rockstar Games
In GTA Vice City, the original Stinger was based on the design of the 1972 Ferrari 365 GTS/4. However, in the newer version of the Grand Theft Auto game, the tail lights look modern, and fans have pointed this out. But as discussed before in this article, it could be modded.
Comment byu/thegamingpro54 from discussion inGTA6
Comment byu/thegamingpro54 from discussion inGTA6
Some car enthusiasts in the GTA 6 fandom found it uncanny with the Nissan 240SX. On the contrary, others state that it is more familiar with the Buick Reatta. Both are plausible options; maybe it is a combination of both. Cars from the ’90s, mostly tuners, had some unique tail light designs.
Rockstar doesn’t partner with car brands to showcase them in the game. Instead, they create made-up brands that resemble real-world cars. Since inspiration can come from anywhere, it’s hard to assume which brand it is signifying.
Do you think the car shown in the trailer is indeed Stinger from GTA Vice City? Or do you think this is a new custom-made car for GTA 6? Let us know in the comments!

Europe must make concessions to Trump in trade talks, LVMH’s Arnault says
Bernard Arnault, Chairman and CEO of LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton, speaks during the annual shareholders meeting of LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton in Paris, France, April 17, 2025.

The European Union must soften its stance toward U.S. President Donald Trump’s trade demands and negotiate a deal to avoid tariffs and protect European jobs, LVMH CEO and Chairman Bernard Arnault said on Wednesday.
Talks between Brussels and Washington should be handled “with the aim to succeed and therefore with reciprocal concessions,” Arnault said. “For now, I am under the impression it’s not going well.”
Speaking to French senators during a parliamentary hearing, Arnault said he was actively lobbying to avoid tariffs, citing his group’s cognac and wine business as particularly impacted by the trade tensions.
“You see what the British have done, they have negotiated very well. Using my modest means and contacts, I hope I will manage to convince Europe to adopt a similarly constructive attitude”, Arnault said.
Britain earlier this month struck a deal that would improve access for the worst-hit sectors, rather than pursuing a wider agreement.
Arnault did not comment further when asked by lawmakers about his direct talks with Trump and a recent visit to the White House.
The United States is LVMH’s most important market, accounting for 25% of annual sales.

Roman Reigns and Jason Momoa tapped for Street Fighter movie adaptation
Roman Reigns and Jason Momoa tapped for Street Fighter movie adaptation
Several actors are in talks to star in an upcoming street Fighter adaptation from Legendary Pictures, it’s claimed.
Andrew Koji (Bullet Train), Jason Momoa (A Minecraft Movie, Game of Thrones), Noah Centineo (Warfare), and Roman Reigns (Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, WWE) are all in talks to join the project, according to Deadline.
The upcoming film adaptation is reportedly a co-production between Capcom and Legendary Pictures.
Street Fighter has received several adaptations, both live-action and animated. The most notable live-action adaptation came with 1994’s Street Fighter. The film starred Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raúl Juliá and Kylie Minogue.
Despite critical panning at the time, the film was a commercial success, earning a reported $100 million from a budget of just $35 million. Smaller budget projects followed, with rumours swirling of a big-budget television adaptation for some time.
While Capcom has adapted some of its most popular gaming properties, the results have been mixed. Director Paul W. S. Anderson has been involved with seven Capcom adaptations, which have received mixed reviews from critics and fans.
If the project goes ahead, it’ll be another live-action adaptation of a beloved video game franchise for Jason Momoa, who earlier this year appeared in A Minecraft Movie, which has gone on to be a box office smash.
After four weekends, A Minecraft Movie reached $816.6 million at the global box office. While the film had a stronger opening weekend than The Super Mario Bros Movie, it appears to have dropped off quicker, meaning it has some way to go to beat its total worldwide gross of $1.360 billion.

Judge says Trump administration violated court order with deportation flight linked to South Sudan

After a deportation flight with eight migrants left Texas reportedly intended for South Sudan this week, a federal judge on Wednesday ruled that the Trump administration had violated a previous order.
District Court Judge Brian Murphy in Massachusetts said during a hearing that the Trump administration had failed to adhere to his injunction, issued in March, preventing individuals from being sent to a country other than their own without giving them an opportunity to raise fears of persecution or torture.
The judge’s ruling comes after the Department of Homeland Security confirmed during a press briefing Wednesday morning that eight individuals from Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cuba, Mexico and South Sudan were deported this week. According to the DHS, many of these individuals had violent criminal convictions, including ******* and ******* assault.
“The department’s actions,” Murphy said, “are unquestionably violative of this court’s order.”
A State Department travel advisory warns Americans not to go to South Sudan, “due to crime, kidnapping, and armed conflict” and notes that in March, because of conditions on the ground, the department “ordered the departure of non-emergency U.S. government employees from South Sudan.”
Government attorneys said that the migrants are still in ICE custody, and that the plane has since landed. They declined to share the location of the plane’s final destination.
Murphy, who relayed publicly the sequence of events leading to the deportation of these individuals after spending more than 30 minutes in a sealed proceeding, said the individuals were notified of their destination “sometime in the evening” on Monday, outside business hours. He added that they left the ICE facility the next morning at the latest in the 10 a.m. hour and at the earliest before 9 a.m.
Without sufficient time to consult an attorney or family members, the judge said that it was “impossible” for those individuals to “have a meaningful opportunity to object” to their deportation to a third country.

The hearing comes after immigration attorneys told Murphy that at least two of their clients, from Myanmar and Vietnam, were allegedly deported Tuesday morning to South Sudan.
It’s possible one of the migrants, Nyo Mint, might have been diverted to his home country of Burma but his San Antonio-based immigration attorney Jonathan Ryan says he is still in the dark about where his client is right now and says he has been “disappeared.”
“I have not heard from my client,” Ryan said. “How am I supposed to take their word that they sent him to Burma?”
Ryan says the government is acting as if due process is a privilege saying it’s a problem “when we stop doing due process for unpopular people.”
South Sudan could be headed for another civil war. A 2018 power-sharing agreement between President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar, ended five years of civil war. But earlier this year, violent clashes between the factions have ramped up once again.
Earlier this month, Murphy blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to deport individuals from countries including the Philippines, Vietnam and Laos to Libya. Then, Murphy had reaffirmed his injunction on third country deportations in response to an emergency motion from the migrants’ lawyers.

50+ Activision Classics Drop on Xbox Game Pass Today
50+ Activision Classics Drop on Xbox Game Pass Today
PlayStation players often brag about the Classic Catalog that Sony offers to PlayStation Plus users, but now, Xbox players also have something to brag about. An entirely new section of Retro Classics has been added, allowing players to choose from over 50 restored and ready-to-play games from Activision. This collaboration between Xbox and Antstream is exclusively for those who wish to relive the good old days.
Sony offers the Classics Catalog only to PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers, but Xbox Retro Classics will be available to all Game Pass membership options in the regions where Game Pass is currently available. This was obviously possible due to Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, a deal that has proved to be a game-changer for Xbox.
Over 50 Activision classics are now available on Xbox Game Pass
Xbox has announced Retro Classics, a feature that has been described as “a step in our commitment to game preservation and backwards compatibility.” This feature will allow Xbox Game Pass subscribers to access and play over 50 classic Activision video games from the ’80s and ’90s. Here is a list of all video games that can be played via Retro Classics:

Furthermore, Xbox has plans to expand this library by adding more than 100 classic titles from Activision and Blizzard. This feature brings in more unique challenges, collectable achievements, leaderboards, and weekly tournaments.
How to get the Retro Classics feature?
Retro Classics features some iconic video games like MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat (Image via Activision)
Xbox’s official website has confirmed that Retro Classics will be available to all Game Pass membership options in the regions where Game Pass is currently available. Here is a quick summary of all the options that Xbox currently offers:
For PC: Players can choose from a standard PC subscription ($11.99/month) or the Ultimate subscription ($19.99/month)
For Console: Players can choose from Core subscription ($9.99/month), Standard subscription ($14.99/month), and Ultimate subscription ($19.99/month).
For both Console and PC, Players can pick the Ultimate subscription ($19.99/month).
This move has certainly given Xbox an edge over PlayStation, as Sony’s PlayStation Plus Premium subscription costs $17.99 and has a very small Classic Catalog as compared to what Xbox is currently offering.
The Retro Classics catalog has a different platforms section, but what’s interesting is that it has a PSX and a SNES section. With Xbox constantly sharing video games with Sony, there might be a small possibility that players might see some PlayStation classics, too, in the Retro Classics section.

Mega Charizard to star in Pokémon Inferno X trading card game set later this year
Mega Charizard to star in Pokémon Inferno X trading card game set later this year
Mega Charizard will star in another Pokémon TCG set, this time Inferno X, which will come to Japan in September.
The Pokémon Trading Card Game will close out the Scarlet and Violet era with ****** Bolt and White Flare later this year, and now we have an idea of what’s to come next, when the era of Mega Pokémon begins this Summer.
Mega Pokémon are special, evolved forms of Pokémon that require Mega Stones. Only certain Pokémon received Mega Evolutions when they were first introduced in Pokémon X and Y. While the mechanic has been resting for some time, they are due to return in Pokémon Legends: Z-A later this year.
According to Pokebeach, September will see the release of Pokémon TCG Mega Inferno X in Japan.
Inferno X will be the second set of the new Mega era, which will begin with Mega Brave and Mega Symphonia, which are due to be released in Japan in August. Inferno X will reportedly star Mega Charizard X, which could imply that an Inferno Y set will be released at the same time, starring Mega Charizard Y.
Pokémon ****** Bolt and Pokémon White Flare will be the English Pokémon TCG’s first-ever dual set when they release in July. The set will feature all 156 Unova Pokémon and will introduce a brand-new rarity.
Earlier this year, The Pokémon Company released a statement addressing multiple fan reports that trading cards have been difficult to find, saying that it’s printing as many cards as possible and working to replenish stock at retailers as quickly as it is able to.
“We’re aware that some fans are experiencing difficulties purchasing certain Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) products due to very high demand impacting availability,” the statement reads.
“We understand this inconvenience can be disappointing for fans, and we are actively working to print more of the impacted Pokémon TCG products as quickly as possible and at maximum capacity to acknowledge this. Reprinted products are expected to be available at participating retailers as soon as possible.”

Enhanced Games: Doped swimmer claims 50m freestyle ‘world record’
Enhanced Games: Doped swimmer claims 50m freestyle ‘world record’
“The Enhanced Games gave me the resources and the team to unlock a new level of performance – and now the whole world can see what’s possible,” said Gkolomeev, whose previous 50m freestyle best was 21.44, winning silver behind Britain’s Ben Proud at the European Championships in Edinburgh in 2018.
The Enhanced Games did not reveal what substances he had taken, citing personal confidentiality and concern that others would follow Gkolomeev’s regime unsupervised. It said they were prescribed “medically and legally”.
Organisers say they allow participants to take only “medically prescribable and legally approved” substances under clinical supervision, and that they are confident they will comply with the Drug Enforcement Administration laws in the US.
Ukraine’s Andrii Govorov, the 33-year-old 50m butterfly world record holder, and 21-year-old Bulgarian Josif Miladinov, a European 100m butterfly silver medallist, have also signed up.
Govorov announced his retirement from Olympic sport this week.
“This choice wasn’t easy,” he wrote on Instagram., external
“I spent a long time reflecting – putting everything I care about on the scale. Competing in Los Angeles [in 2028] was my dream. But life had other plans.”
The recruitment of Gkolomeev, Govorov and Miladinov is a coup for the Enhanced Games after critics claimed it would struggle to convince established names, still in their prime, to cross the divide.
*********** former world champion James Magnussen, 34, came out of retirement to join the Enhanced Games in 2024, but his attempt to beat the 50m freestyle world record fell well short, recording a best time of 22.73.
The Enhanced Games have aspirations to have a 100-strong roster of participants in next year’s event.
Organisers will build a four-lane 50m pool, a six-lane sprint track and a weightlifting venue at Resorts World in Las Vegas.
The project also plans to market “performance and longevity enhancements” to the general public this summer.

3 Reasons Salesforce Could Be Back at All-Time Highs by June
3 Reasons Salesforce Could Be Back at All-Time Highs by June
Salesforce (NYSE:) Inc. is quietly mounting a comeback.
Shares are up more than 25% from the April low and are trading just under $290 heading into next week’s earnings.
While it’s still some distance from its all-time high around the $370 mark, the stock is setting up well, and a strong report could be the catalyst that gets it there by the end of June.
Here are 3 reasons investors should be excited about that happening.
1. Technical Setup Remains Bullish
Salesforce’s chart has turned decisively upward after falling for much of February, March, and April. The MACD remains in positive territory and continues to trend higher, a strong momentum signal, while RSI has been steadily climbing and now sits at around 60. That suggests plenty of room remains before the stock hits overbought conditions.
The move has also come with consistent volume and clean consolidation between legs higher. Shares have now reclaimed the 50-day moving average and moved above the March highs. If earnings confirm the trend, a breakout toward $370 becomes a realistic technical target.
2. Analysts Are Turning Up the Heat
In recent weeks, a string of bullish analyst notes has added further weight to the rally. Mizuho reiterated its Outperform rating last week and set a price target of $380, which would mark a fresh all-time high. The firm noted Salesforce’s positioning in enterprise AI and platform-level integration as key drivers of long-term value creation.
This echoed Needham’s move last month, when it also maintained its Buy rating and issued an even more aggressive price target of $400. Analyst Scott Berg highlighted Salesforce’s Agentforce platform as a standout, calling it a sweeping example of AI innovation.
According to Berg, Salesforce is moving quickly to create a full-service AI platform for customer support and HR functions, with multichannel capabilities and enhanced feedback loops through its new Testing Center and Agent Interaction modules.
Berg noted that these improvements are geared toward helping businesses scale their agent functionality more efficiently, using real-time performance feedback powered by AI.
This vision of Salesforce not just offering AI features, but building an intelligent operating layer across its ecosystem, is what continues to separate it from many peers. It’s a thesis that is resonating more strongly with analysts and enterprise buyers alike.
3. Earnings Momentum Is on Its Side
Salesforce has been consistent regarding earnings, and that reliability is starting to matter again. Last quarter, the company delivered its highest revenue print ever, continuing a trend of steady top-line growth and margin expansion.
Looking back over multiple quarters, Salesforce has missed earnings expectations only a handful of times, and often by negligible margins. More importantly, it has managed to maintain strong guidance and execution throughout challenging macro conditions, winning favor with institutions that prioritize stability.
The bar is not unrealistically high with next week’s results on deck. However, if Salesforce can show continued growth in subscription revenue, meaningful adoption of its AI features, and upside on margin guidance, the market could reward the stock with a fresh breakout.
Setting Up for a Return to Record Highs
Salesforce has spent much of 2024 lagging behind other big-cap tech names, but that may change. The stock has quietly reclaimed key levels, technicals are pointing upward, and analysts are again leaning bullish. Meanwhile, the company continues to innovate in enterprise AI and deliver results that reinforce its leadership position.
If earnings next week confirm what the chart and the Street suggest, Salesforce could be back in the spotlight and at all-time highs sooner than expected.

Columbia University President Is Booed at Commencement Ceremony
For the second day in a row, Columbia University students critical of the administration delivered a chorus of boos toward the acting president, Claire Shipman, during her speech at the main commencement ceremony on Wednesday.
“Please welcome the acting president of the university, Claire Shipman.” [graduates booing] “Families, you have given us a gift — thank you. And, graduates, it is time to give the world your gifts. So with that, let me turn to you, the nearly 16,000 graduates of the Columbia Class of 2025. You are the best of us. We firmly believe that our international students have the same rights to freedom of speech as everyone else — [graduates booing] and they should not be targeted by the government for exercising that right. I know many in our community today are mourning the absence of our graduate, Mahmoud Khalil.” Chanting: “Free Mahmoud.”

How Hulk Hogan’s sex tape led to drug-friendly Games
How Hulk Hogan’s sex tape led to drug-friendly Games
What does Hulk Hogan’s home-made porno – with his mate Bubba the Love Sponge’s wife – have to do with it?
For *********** entrepreneur Aron D’Souza, a fair bit.
Hogan’s romp is a link in the chain leading D’Souza to Las Vegas’ sunset strip for this week’s launch of Enhanced Games, a multi-sports event with no drug testing.
D’Souza, a 40-year-old Melbourne-born businessman, has the backing of multi-billionaires, and a family company of US President Donald Trump.
And he’s pinching himself that a concept first planted in his mind 15 years ago when he read a bioethicist’s paper is now in fruition.
“I think about my life and it’s like truth is stranger than fiction,” D’Souza told AAP in an interview in Las Vegas.
“If someone wrote the story of my life, you just couldn’t believe it.
“The Peter Thiel/Gawker case, that’s a book and a movie in itself.”
The Gawker case involves Hulk Hogan and a home-made pornographic film.
In 2006, the world famous wrestler was down in the dumps.
A mate, a shock-jock known as Bubba the Love Sponge, offered his wife to Hogan. The wrestler agreed, on condition it wasn’t recorded.
Bubba lied, filmed the frolic and, six years later, it was leaked to a brash New York publisher known for flaunting rules, Gawker.
In 2007, Gawker outed Thiel as gay. That article, while legal, enraged the *******-born multi-billionaire who is now among financiers of D’Souza’s Enhanced Games.
The *********** met the ******* around 2010 when D’Souza, then 24, was completing a law degree at England’s Oxford University.
They got talking. Thiel told of his Gawker gripe. D’Souza got thinking.
Why doesn’t Thiel fund lawyers to find cases against Gawker, then sue them into extinction? Thiel agreed.
When Gawker publishes Hulk Hogan’s sex tape in 2012, D’Souza’s plan swings into action.
“This is when two of the largest industries in the world merge – care, and sports and entertainment,” D’Souza said.
“There’s so many more partnerships to be done, so many more levers in public policy to push, so many avenues of science to advance.
“I do view this as still as a human rights struggle because, fundamentally, the principle human right is to be able to do with own body what we wish.
“And that might mean taking synthetic testosterone. It may mean prosthesis. It may mean brain computer interfaces.
“If you read the scientific literature, there is a pipeline of all this technology being developed right now.”
D’Souza said Enhanced Games’ mission was “bringing super humanity – making the first super human”.
“Probably today, only one-tenth of a per cent of Americans would view themselves as enhanced,” he said.
“But in a few years, that will be five per cent, 10 per cent.
“And that’s how we’re going to measure this.
“I could get hit by a bus today and this event, this movement, will continue to succeed and grow because it’s not about me, it’s not about even the company that we have built.
“It’s about cultural zeitgeist that is happening in the world.
“We timed it right but I am certain that within 20 years’ time, all sport will be enhanced.”
The event has been decried by sports administrators worldwide, most notably the Olympic movement.
But D’Souza said Olympic criticism had quietened since 1789 Capital, a company of Donald Trump Jnr, recently jumped aboard as a partner of the fledgling games.
“I think there’s been an order from the very top, and I mean from (soon-to-be retired IOC president Thomas) Bach himself,” D’Souza said.
“Because of the support we have from the Trump administration, and that the LA28 Olympics are coming around, they don’t want to be seen as opposing us.
“Because if they do, that risks the political support for LA28 and LA28 needs billions of dollars of taxpayer money to succeed.”
This AAP article was made possible by support from the Enhanced Games.

Republican spending bill driving up yields and creating a major headache
Republican spending bill driving up yields and creating a major headache

Spencer Platt | Getty Images News | Getty Images
The U.S. debt-and-deficit situation is bad and facing real prospects of getting worse, triggering a high-profile credit rating downgrade from Moody’s and another selling stampede in stocks and bonds.
Whether the recoil in financial markets continues is largely in the hands of policymakers who seem intent on adding to the U.S. fiscal problems in the name of stimulating growth through President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful” spending bill.
For now, Wall Street experts are not optimistic about what happens from here.
“Moody’s didn’t tell us anything we didn’t already know, but they did underscore that things aren’t going in the right direction,” said Kathy Jones, chief fixed income strategist at Charles Schwab. ” The big, beautiful bill also, when it comes to debt and deficits, is not going in the right direction.”
The result, Jones said, is that the U.S. is likely to add to its $36.2 trillion debt load, of which $28.9 trillion is directly held by the public. Tax cuts that aren’t matched with less spending would also pressure the budget deficit, which is heading towards 7% of gross domestic product.
Moody’s Ratings on Friday cut U.S. debt from its top rating, though it changed the outlook from negative to stable. The agency cited unresolved “large annual fiscal deficits and growing interest costs” as the reason behind the move, though it did not specifically mention the House spending bill.
Add to that trade tensions the U.S. has initiated with Japan and China, the largest and third-largest foreign holders of Treasury debt, and it makes for a market headache.
“You put all that together, and the market is increasing that risk premium for long-term bonds,” Jones said. “There is a global repricing in a world where there’s just more sovereign debt and a lot more uncertainty about whether policies are going to adjust to make that look attractive.
Jump in yields
What it’s meant in market terms has been a severe leg up in Treasury yields, particularly in longer-denominated debt such as the 10-year note and 30-year bond. Investors are demanding higher yields as compensation for the risk they are taking holding U.S. debt.
In normal times, Treasurys are considered risk-free investments as there is virtually zero risk the U.S. ever would default. However, rising worries about the fiscal situation and a resurgence in inflation from tariffs — not to mention the Moody’s downgrade — are forcing yields higher.
Stock Chart IconStock chart icon
30-year yield over the past five days
With the deficit heading to 6.5%-7% of GDP, that is “inconsistent with debt-to-GDP stability over the long run,” Matthew Luzzetti, chief U.S. economist at Deutsche Bank, said in a client note. “Absent a clearer commitment towards putting deficits on a downward path, investor concerns about U.S. fiscal dynamics are likely to persist.”
How much the budget will get stretched is dependent on the final package that gets through Congress. But markets are betting that making the 2017 tax cuts permanent as well as eliminating taxes on tips and overtime, with only partial revenue offsets, will aggravate the fiscal problems.
“If [the bill] fails, the financial markets won’t be happy. But if it passes — well, that might be just as problematic,” wrote Ed Yardeni, head of Yardeni Research. “Why? Because budget deficits matter. That’s especially so when they lead to higher interest rates, higher bond yields and potentially higher inflation. We suspect the Bond Vigilantes already anticipate this.”
Stocks also under pressure
Indeed, the 30-year bond yield topped 5% this week, its highest since October 2023 and an area where it hasn’t traded consistently since the early part of the century. The 10-year note, used as a benchmark for a wide range of debt, from auto loans to mortgages, neared 4.6% on Wednesday, its highest since February.
The market damage, though, hasn’t been limited to fixed income, nor has it been confined to the U.S.

Stocks also have come under pressure as investor nervousness grows over how higher interest rates will pressure corporate profit margins, raise borrowing costs and slow consumer spending. After easing somewhat from 7% earlier this year, 30-year mortgage rates are climbing again, most recently at 6.81%, according to Fannie Mae.
Bond yields also are rising globally. The 30-year Japanese government bond yield is at a record high as worries over fiscal stabililty spread.
“I feel like the dam is finally starting to break a little bit, and there’s too many holes in the ***** to put our fingers in,” said Mitch Goldberg, president of ClientFirst Strategy. “The issue is that if the cost of debt financing keeps going up, we’re going to find ourselves in a time of austerity, kind of like the European Union was about 10 years ago.”
For equity investors, the changing dynamics of a deglobalizing economy likely mean permanently higher interest rates, potentially slower economic growth and a complicated market picture.
“We’re going to be facing 20% plus moves more frequently in the stock market,” Goldberg said. “It’s not just a new debt financing regime we’re facing. It’s a whole new global economy regime.”

Weak end at Bernie’s match as Tomic hopes sink in Paris
Weak end at Bernie’s match as Tomic hopes sink in Paris
Bernie Tomic keeps battling on in the lower reaches of world tennis at 32 but it gets no easier for the 32-year-old former prodigy as he crashed out in his latest bid to return to the big-time.
Tomic, seeking to reach a grand slam main draw for the first time in four years, had given himself hope in the first round of qualifying at the French Open in Paris on Monday when he had downed the much touted Hong Kong youngster Coleman Wong.
But on a rainswept day at Roland Garros, reality bit in the second round on Wednesday when Tomic, a former top-20 player now down to 231 in the world, was beaten 6-3 6-4 by another of the new generation, 21-year-old Californian Ethan Quinn, before the weather caused an early suspension to the day’s play.
Maddison Inglis was another *********** who failed to beat either the weather or her opponent as she crashed 7-5 6-3 to Russian Kristina Dmitruk.
They were the only two Australians to get their second-round matches completed, with 26th qualifying seed Daria Saville locked at two-games apiece in the opening set with Daphnee Mpetshi-Perricard, younger sister of big-hitting French star Giovanni, when the rains came.
Two of Saville’s compatriots Astra Sharma and Talia Gibson didn’t get the chance to start their matches, which were rearranged for Thursday.
Jason Kubler, now the last *********** standing in the men’s qualifying draw as he seeks to join the 15 who have already made it to next week’s big show, has his work cut out after losing the first set 7-6 (8-6) in his second-round qualifier with Japan’s James Trotter before the suspension.
Among the nine men already set for the main event, Alexei Popyrin, the Aussie No.2, enjoyed a good win over Jacob Fearnley 6-4 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals of the Geneva Open in Switzerland.
It’s a real confidence booster for the 25-year-old Popyrin, who’s had a difficult year with illness, injuries and a break from his successful partnership with co-coach Xavier Malisse but who believes he’s finding his form at just the right time.
And two different generation of Aussie women players at the Morocco Open in Rabat enjoyed an encouraging day too.
American-born Queenslander Maya Joint, just 19, outplayed American Katie Volynets 6-0 6-3 to reach her first ever WTA claycourt quarter-final while 32-year-old Ajla Tomljanovic, the former *********** No.1, beat Italian Tatiana Pieri 4-6 6-2 6-4 to join the teenager in the last-eight.

AI wearables are ‘on the cusp’ of taking off, analyst says
AI wearables are ‘on the cusp’ of taking off, analyst says
00:00 Speaker A
When we look at the moves that OpenAI has been making recently, they’ve been hiring, uh, sort of on a bit of a hiring blitz, right? They hired the next door CEO as their CFO last year. They recently hired an Instacart, uh, the Instacart CEO as, I believe, their chief product officer. Now there’s the Johnny Ive move. But what does all of this I mean, it still takes a while to make hardware, right? It’s not like it’s like they snap, they’ve hired him and that’s it. What kind of timeline can we perhaps look for for something like this?
00:47 Ben Bajarin
Yeah, I mean, it really, you’re totally right. It takes a lot of time. And just look again, right, at how long Meta had been doing hardware, right? To get to a point where we saw some tipping curves of mass adoption, right? The the glasses had been in in works for a long time before they made it to market. It was really the second generation of Meta Ray-Bans that moved to any kind of reasonable scale with those now having sold over, you know, over two, two million units. So there there is a lot of time that goes into this. What we don’t know is how far along OpenAI is already with prior concepts, you know, if they’ve been trial and erroring in this for a while, and they’re and they’re closer than we know because of what they got hardware wise, then obviously bringing, you know, more of these assets to the team can put them on a shorter timeline. I I don’t think they’re starting from scratch where it would be longer. But I also think we got to look at the timeline for, you know, again, just let’s look at what Google’s, you know, showed yesterday with these kind of AI first classes, whether they have a display or not, right? Like like the Ray-Bans that don’t have a display or or some of the others that are being floated with a display. We’re on the cusp of of those starting to take off, fueled by your ability to talk to an AI agent, explore the world, let it see what you see and have those interactions. That’s that’s the 12 to 18 month journey that we’re on. You’re going to see a whole host of those whether OpenAI is in that or not. But I would say over the next two years, this space is going to heat up quickly, and we’re going to see hardware innovation again with this AI first, you know, sort of wearables hardware.
03:06 Speaker A
Really interesting stuff, Ben. Looking forward to continuing the conversation in the coming months as we get more news on this. Appreciate it.
03:20 Ben Bajarin
Yeah, thanks for having me.
