Why taping your mouth shut at night probably isn’t a good idea Why taping your mouth shut at night probably isn’t a good idea Some social media videos recommend taping your mouth shut entirely to improve sleep, while others advise only partly closing it Sevda Ercan/Getty Images There is little good-quality evidence to support the social media trend of taping your mouth closed at night to alleviate breathing difficulties – and some scientists worry it could bring its own set of problems. “The fad has taken off on social media,” says Ken O’Halloran at University College Cork in Ireland, who wasn’t involved in the new research. “Ultimately, there’s little evidence it works.” In the past few years, some users of platforms like TikTok and Instagram have recommended using adhesive tape to close your mouth during sleep, in videos that have collectively been watched millions of times. This forces nasal breathing, which some people claim brings various health benefits, namely reducing breathing problems and thereby deepening sleep. To explore if there is evidence to support this, Brian Rotenberg at Western University in Ontario, Canada, and his colleagues reviewed eight studies involving nearly 200 people with obstructive sleep apnea. This is a common condition where breathing temporarily stops or becomes restricted during sleep, often causing people to snore and repeatedly jolt awake due to low oxygen levels. The studies threw up mixed results. In two of them, researchers tracked people’s breathing while they slept for two nights, with and without tape. These found that the tape reduced how often they temporarily stopped breathing or experienced restricted airflow. “This occurred a few times less an hour,” says Rotenberg. But the remaining six studies, one of which was a randomised-controlled trial, found mouth taping was of no benefit for these problems. “The outcomes were very mixed, so the evidence is weak, and the studies were generally of poor quality with around a dozen or few dozens of people involved,” says O’Halloran. Rotenberg also says that mouth taping could be problematic in itself. “If your nose gets blocked and your mouth is taped shut, you’re more likely to have those panic-inducing situations of not getting any air in.” “People can just pull the tape off, but I’d imagine someone could get quite anxious when they wake, so I wouldn’t advise it,” says David Garley at The Better Sleep Clinic in Bristol, ***. But some of the variation in the results could be due to differences in how mouth taping was done, says Rotenberg. Some of the studies defined it as a horizontal strip covering the entire mouth, while others were less specific, so it is possible that in some cases the mouth was only partly closed, he says. Another limitation is that none of the studies tracked daytime symptoms. “It’s the tiredness and headaches in the day that cause substantial problems for people in the clinic [with obstructive sleep apnoea], but they didn’t look at that,” says Garley. Until more research is available, people should speak to a doctor if they are experiencing breathing difficulties, he says. Approved treatments, such as CPAP machines that gently push air through a mask to keep the airways open, have been proven to help with obstructive sleep apnoea, says Garley. M&S website down following disruptions after cyber attack
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
M&S website down following disruptions after cyber attack M&S website down following disruptions after cyber attack The Marks & Spencer website is down, leaving users unable to browse, as the retailer continues to deal with the aftermath of a cyber-attack last month. Customers have been unable to make online orders for weeks but on Wednesday evening users were met with a screen reading: “Sorry you can’t browse the site currently. We’re making some updates and will be back soon.” M&S has been contacted for comment. Earlier in the day, the retailer said it estimates that the cyber-attack will hit this year’s profits by around £300. It added that its online services would continue to be disrupted until July, with a gradual return to normal. Following the cyber attack, M&S said some personal customer data was stolen in the recent cyber attack, which could include telephone numbers, home addresses and dates of birth. The High Street giant assured customers that the data theft did not include useable payment or card details, or any account passwords, but added that online order histories could be included in the personal data stolen. The attack took place over the Easter weekend, initially affecting click-and-collect and contactless payments. A few days later M&S put a banner on its website apologising that online ordering was not available. M&S estimates that the cyber attack will hit this year’s profits by around £300m – more than analysts had expected and the equivalent to a third of its profit – a sum that would only partly be covered by any insurance pay-out. “Over the last few weeks, we have been managing a highly sophisticated and targeted cyber-attack, which has led to a limited ******* of disruption,” said M&S chief executive Stuart Machin. Police are focusing on a notorious group of English-speaking hackers, known as Scattered Spider, the BBC has learned. The same group is believed to have been behind attacks on the Co-op and Harrods, but it was M&S that suffered the biggest impact. The Aussie coach who changed his tune on Enhanced Games The Aussie coach who changed his tune on Enhanced Games *********** Brett Hawke has overseen the fastest freestyle in history as he braces for backlash while coaching drug-taking swimmers. The dual *********** Olympian has joined Enhanced Games as head swim coach for the multi-sports event with no drug testing. Under Hawke’s guidance at a trial on February 25, Greek swimmer Kristian Gkolomeev bettered the existing 50m free world record. Three weeks into a 12-week enhancement program, Gkolomeev – who finished fifth in the event at the past two Olympics – clocked 20.89 seconds at the Greensboro Aquatics Centre in North Carolina. Brazilian Cesar Cielo (20.91) has owned the legal world record since the supersuit era of 2009 when he was coached by Hawke. The Bulgarian-born Gkolomeev, who raced for Greece at four Olympics, was given $US1 million in prizemoney by Enhanced Games organisers for bettering the official benchmark. “I didn’t make any money in Greece; from the last two Olympic Games, I got fifth and nothing really changed,” Gkolomeev told AAP in an interview in Las Vegas . “One successful year at the Enhanced Games, I can probably make as much as I would have made in almost 10 careers.” Gkolomeev only attended the February trial, which Enhanced Games organisers say used Olympic timing systems, as support for James Magnussen. The *********** entered his first-ever enhancement phase in the US on limited preparation. Ten weeks into his program, he clocked a best time of 22.73. In his clean 15-year international career, the now 34-year-old’s personal best was 21.52 in 2013. Hawke was in no doubt that with lessons learnt and tweaks to Magnussen’s enhancement program ahead of the inaugural games in Las Vegas on May 21-24 next year, the triple Olympic medallist will thrive. And the former *********** 50m freestyle record holder and five-time national champion was preparing for backlash to his involvement in Enhanced Games. “I look at this as groundbreaking, revolutionary, for sure,” he said. “You’d be silly not to think that people aren’t going to be opposed to it. “But we’re outside the scope of the Olympic Games and World Aquatics, we’re not competing in that space. “The backlash will be there, I knew that from the start. “But I hope people go in with an open mind and really look at this and do the research that I’ve done.” Hawke said he remained an advocate for clean sport “on the Olympic side”. “I would never want an athlete to participate at the Olympic Games and be cheating,” he said. “And unfortunately, I think that is happening in this day and age. “But what I’m doing over here with the Enhanced Games is something completely different.” Hawke, who has coached in the United States since 2006, said his interest was piqued when hearing *********** entrepreneur and Enhanced Games president Aron D’Souza on the Joe Rogan podcast. “I’m pretty open minded and progressive with my thoughts and I like to listen to people’s arguments and I thought they were pretty compelling,” he said. As the Sydney-born 49-year-old researched, his long-standing view changed. “Initially, and I think that’s the operative word here, we’re taught that performance enhancing drugs are bad and all we hear about them is the abuse of them,” Hawke said. “That’s all I knew so of course that’s what I initially thought, people are going to be abusing drugs. “And that is certainly not the case at all and I’ve learned over time it’s a pretty naive view on this. “But yeah, initially I had the same reaction as anyone else until I did my research, until I started asking questions.” This AAP article was made possible by support from the Enhanced Games. Elon Musk trying to ‘minimize’ reality of Tesla sales hit: Investor Elon Musk trying to ‘minimize’ reality of Tesla sales hit: Investor 00:00 Speaker A Well, a more hopeful outlook for Tesla emerging as CEO Elon Musk refocuses his attention on the EV maker. Musk stepping away from his identity as an influential political operator as Tesla faces weakness, the company reporting last month its worst quarter for sales in three years. For more now on what’s next as Elon Musk enters a new phase, let’s get to ******* Kawasaki Wealth and Investment Management CEO Ross *******. Ross, great to see you. So there’s a lot of places we could start with this one, Ross. Maybe, you know, you look at Tesla, I know it’s down today, Ross, it’s in the red. Uh, but what a move for that stock. I mean, you’re up about 50% from early April. I’m curious what you make of that move, Ross, and what you would chalk it up to. Is that, you know, is that must saying I’m going to spend more time at Tesla? Is it easing trade tensions with China? Is it, hey, robo taxis on the way in Austin? Is it all three? Something I’m missing? Walk me through it. 01:44 Ross ******* Well, I think the first two you’re you’re dead right on. I don’t know about the third because it’s really hard to quantify the economics behind launching a robo taxi service and and we certainly don’t think it’s going to be accretive to earnings like for years. So it took, you know, Uber almost a decade to make money in, you know, the ride sharing business and I don’t think it’s a very easy business. But I think the other two issues were major issues for Tesla. First of all, Elon wasn’t working at Tesla. The the company was adrift. It was a really big positive to see him back, doing interviews from the factory floor. You know, he kind of got the message like you need to show up to work because it’s like the company desperately needs it. So that certainly helps boost the stock because whatever Elon’s focused on is, you know, he usually gets results. Um, and then secondly, you know, the China thing is a huge problem for Tesla because Tesla is really an important company in China and it’s an American symbol of in China like Apple. And I was very concerned that this would, you know, potentially blow up into a full trade war where, you know, the boycotts that we’re seeing here in the United States and Europe would extend to China even. And so, you know, I’m pretty happy to see the trade, you know, I wouldn’t say be solved, but simmered off a little bit and and it was a direct benefit to Tesla to have ******** tensions ease. So that did bring the stock back up, but we’re now at a valuation that’s well beyond even Tesla’s traditional, you know, 100 times forward earnings. So, you know, for investors who are concerned about Tesla’s future, it’s an opportunity to to let go of some of the stock. 04:28 Speaker A Which I know is something that you’ve been doing. Um, Ross, you know, I also thought I was struck by some of the comments that we heard from Elon Musk when he was speaking to that conference, um, in the Middle East. And among other things, he said he was going to pull back from his political giving. I guess he unless he sees the next opportunity to do political giving where he wants to. But Right. I have to wonder with his sort of backing off of Doge, recommitting to Tesla, um, what and he also made the point that, you know, they might have lost customers on the political left but gained them on the political right. Where do you think the sort of brand goes from here, both in the US and also in Europe? 05:59 Ross ******* Well, clearly Elon’s trying to minimize a reality that exists right now, which is Tesla sales are going down. And they’ve been going down substantially even more this quarter. So, you know, there’s a little bit of this denial going on of the effect of his political actions on and and, you know, personal belief systems that he’s amplified on the actual brand. But the brand is is probably one of the most hated brands in the world now, unfortunately. And for a company that does so much to try to make a difference in climate and and and and for human life in a positive way, it’s extremely distressing to me how negative the brand is viewed today. And I don’t think he made any attempt to try to reckon with that at all. So I don’t know how that solves itself. And I think until Tesla continues to see weak sales, which I think it will, um, at some point, they’ll need to address this. Chief investment strategist says these outperforming tech plays remain attractive Chief investment strategist says these outperforming tech plays remain attractive A few attractive tech plays are ripe for the picking according to Eva Ados, chief investment strategist at ERShares. Ados joined CNBC’s ” Power Lunch ” on Wednesday to give her bullish take on a handful of stocks, including Tesla and Robinhood . Tesla Ados remains optimistic on Tesla’s growth story. Tesla shares have surged nearly 47% over the past month amid a comeback in tech stocks and revived enthusiasm for driverless technology and robotics. CEO Elon Musk on Tuesday also promised to lead the company for the next five years as questions swirled around the amount of time he’s invested in politics and advising the Trump administration. Even after the latest recovery, Tesla shares have lost 17% this year. “We are still buyers of [Tesla] because it’s not just an EV company,” Ados said. “It’s a fascinating story of many different complex components coming together, because now you have the EV, you have autonomous vehicles, which is becoming a reality … and you also have the Airbnb model because in the future, potentially, Tesla owners will be able to rent out their vehicle when they don’t use it.” “All these things together, it’s really hard for any competitor to compete with Tesla in the future,” she added. Ados is also heavily invested in Musk’s private space company, SpaceX, which she believes will be the greatest growth engine in Musk’s portfolio of companies. AppLovin Ados has held AppLovin for two years, and it remains one of her top holdings. AppLovin has soared 57% over the past month, bringing its year-to-date gain at 10.7%. Shares of the advertising technology company popped in early May after AppLovin’s quarterly earnings and revenue beat analyst estimates and it agreed to sell its mobile gaming business in a deal worth $400 million. “This is a fascinating company in terms of how it’s growing. The revenue growth is very, very strong,” Ados said, noting that AppLovin’s revenue, EBIT margin and net income growth is far more attractive than peers in its category. This year was challenging in other respects for AppLovin, she said, pointing to allegations from a handful of short-selling firms that weighed on the stock, stirring investor skepticism. Robinhood Ados believes that it’s still a good time to own trading platform Robinhood even though its shares — up 71% this year — are trading near all-time highs. “It’s a great company on a fundamental basis, but we also believe in it because of the crypto play … this is going to be a good long-term hold,” she said, noting that the Trump administration’s positive approach to crypto assets benefits Robinhood. Ados is also impressed with Robinhood’s profitability turnaround, pointing to Robinhood’s revenue doubling in the last two years and earnings growth that’s higher than revenue growth. “We like when a company turns the corner,” she said. Robinhood reported first quarter net income of $336 million or 38 cents a share , up from $157 million and 18 cents per share a year earlier. Apple designer Sir Jony Ive joins OpenAI Apple designer Sir Jony Ive joins OpenAI Legendary British designer Sir Jony Ive, who helped create the Apple iPhone, is joining forces with OpenAI, as the artificial intelligence (AI) firm sets its sights on developing hardware. OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, will buy a start-up founded by Sir Jony, who will “assume deep design and creative responsibilities” across the company, the two firms said in an announcement. Open AI boss Sam Altman said the goal was to create a “family of devices” made specifically with AI in mind. The deal comes as the tech industry has been looking for its next hardware hit after the iPhone and takes particular aim at Apple, which some say has been moving too slowly to incorporate AI into its devices. “I think we have the opportunity here to kind of completely re-imagine what it means to use a computer,” Mr Altman said in video. Shares in Apple fell more than 2% after the announcement. Sir Jony worked for Apple for more than 30 years, helping to revive the company with pathbreaking products including the iPhone and iPod. He left the firm in 2019 to found his own company, LoveFrom, which has worked with companies such as Airbnb and Moncler. The idea for io, which Sir Jony founded last year, grew out of several years of quiet collaboration between the two companies, according to the announcement. “It became clear that our ambitions to develop, engineer and manufacture a new family of products demanded an entirely new company,” it said. OpenAI had a 23% stake in the startup prior to Wednesday’s announcement, according to US media. US media reported that the merger valued io at roughly $6.4bn (£4.7bn). LoveFrom will remain independent. In the video announcing the merger, Sir Jony said he believed the world was on the “brink of a new generation of technology”. OpenAI set off a wave of investment in AI in 2022 when it unveiled ChatGPT. It has continued to push into new areas, such as shopping and search, in a challenge to established tech giants. The foray into hardware comes as tech rivals such as Meta, Google and Apple have also been investing in products such as headsets and glasses, seeing new opportunity due to advances in AI. Djokovic earns first clay win this year as Paris looms Djokovic earns first clay win this year as Paris looms Novak Djokovic has finally won a match on clay this season, beating Marton Fucsovics 6-2 6-3 in the second round of the rainy Geneva Open to provide him with a timely boost in the build-up to the French Open. Djokovic had lost his two previous matches on clay in the European spring season, and his next opponent at the last warm-up event for the French Open is one of those players who’s already beaten him. In the quarter-finals on Thursday, the second-seeded Djokovic will play Matteo Arnaldi who earlier advanced past Fabian Marozsan 6-3 7-6 (7-3). The Italian had defeated the great Serb in two sets at the Madrid Masters. “My first win this season on clay obviously, it’s great to break the ice in a way. It’s a very demanding surface,” Djokovic said on-court. He faced no break-point chances, landed 73 percent of his first serves and clinched with a backhand winner on his second match-point chance, “It helps if you have a good serve and today I think that was my strongest shot,” Djokovic said. The 24-time Grand Slam singles champion is seeking his 100th career title on the ATP Tour. Geneva is a popular stop with players seeking more match practice before Roland Garros and No.4-ranked Taylor ****** had lost his opening match at the Rome Masters this month. ******, top-seeded this week, advanced to the quarters with a 6-4 7-6 (7-5) win over Quentin Halys of France. He next plays sixth-seeded Hubert Hurkacz, who also won in two sets against a Frenchman, beating Arthur Rinderknech 6-4 6-1. Fourth-seeded Karen Khachanov advanced because Kei Nishikori retired in the second set of their match held over from Tuesday because of the weather. Khachanov next meets Austrian qualifier Sebastian Ofner, who beat Nuno Borges 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-4). Meanwhile, in his home Hamburg Open, top seed Alexander Zverev blamed illness after he was humbled by Frenchman Alexandre Muller on Wednesday. World No.40 Muller prevailed 6-3 4-6 7-6 (7-5) in the last 16 to stun the centre court in Zverev’s birth city for perhaps the biggest win of his career. “Given the fact that I threw up 37 times and had a fever of 39.4 degrees (Celsius) all night, it was actually quite okay,” Zverev said. “If it had been another tournament in a city in another country, then I certainly wouldn’t have played.” Source link #Djokovic #earns #clay #win #year #Paris #looms Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

How student loans impact consumer spending: Chart of the Day How student loans impact consumer spending: Chart of the Day 00:00 Speaker A Now that the student loan moratorium is over, what effect is that going to have on people’s credit, on their ability to spend in general? That’s the subject of today’s chart of the day. And coincidentally, both Torsten Slok of Apollo, as well as one of our earlier guests, Doug Peta of BCA Research, are watching this phenomenon closely. So this, uh, chart looks at all the different types of debt that people hold. But there’s one that really sticks out here, um, that as, uh, that we haven’t really seen, um, come to the ***** over the past couple of years, and that’s student debt, where we could see student student loan delinquencies spike once they are kept track of once again. Uh, Doug Peta, who we spoke to earlier today, he talked a little bit about what might happen as a result. 01:48 Doug Peta And additionally, you know, this is only at the margin and not everybody has student loans, but now student loans that you didn’t have to pay for the last five years, now there’s a new pod of debt that households have to service. 02:29 Speaker A And so one of the effects of having to service that, as Torsten Slok points out, is that up to 10% of US households may face a steep decline in their credit score. That then in turn could affect their ability to get loans in different areas, like mortgages or business loans, for example. So you could see a ripple effect. The other thing that Peta was talking about is that because of this happening at the margins, it’s just one more thing that sort of affects the post-pandemic comedown. There was that enormous amount of stimulus injected into the US economy. That pause on student loan repayments was also a form of stimulus, and we are only now finally getting to the end of that big pot of money, as he put it. And so that’s one of the things that could affect consumer spending going forward. But of course, you also have the other types of debt here to contend with as well. And this basically measures the delinquencies on these different types of debt. Credit card, keep an eye on that as well. It is inflecting a little bit higher as we are seeing other types of debt going into that bucket as well. Auto ticking up slightly, but uh, watching all of these things and how they then feed back into consumer spending. Nike to increase prices on footwear, apparel amid tariffs
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
Nike to increase prices on footwear, apparel amid tariffs Nike to increase prices on footwear, apparel amid tariffs Nike shoes are seen in the King of Prussia Mall, as global markets brace for a hit to trade and growth caused by U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to impose import tariffs on dozens of countries, in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, U.S., April 3, 2025. Rachel Wisniewski | Reuters Nike will raise prices on a wide range of footwear, apparel and equipment as soon as this week as the retail industry braces for tariffs to hit its profits, CNBC has learned. Prices for Nike apparel and equipment for adults will increase between $2 and $10, a person familiar with the matter said. Footwear priced between $100 and $150 will see a hike of $5, while sneakers priced above $150 will see a $10 increase, the person said. The price hikes will be in effect by June 1, but could be seen on shelves as soon as this week, the person said. The increases cover a large portion of Nike’s assortment, but many products will remain the same price. The prices of children’s products will not increase, nor will items priced under $100, according to the person. The company is trying to be cognizant of the financial challenges families are facing and doesn’t want parents to see higher prices when shopping for their children during the back to school season. Further, Nike’s Air Force 1 shoe will remain $115, the person said. “It’s a shoe that people in the workplace wear,” the person said. “It’s comfortable, accessible.” Jordan brand apparel and accessories also won’t see increases, but Jordan sneakers will. Nike said in a statement that “we regularly evaluate our business and make pricing adjustments as part of our seasonal planning.” The company did not say the decision was related to tariffs. While it is common for retailers to regularly adjust their pricing structure, the footwear industry has been particularly hard hit by President Donald Trump’s new tariffs. Currently, Nike manufacturers about half of its footwear in China and Vietnam, which Trump has hit with his new levies. ******** goods face a new 30% tariff, while imports from Vietnam are currently subject to a 10% duty. Trump cut the tariff rate on Vietnamese goods from 46% for 90 days in early April. Tariffs are expected to hit Nike’s profit margin and it can offset the effect through price increases, especially as the sneaker giant works through a turnaround that’s taking longer than expected. Nike’s profits were already under pressure before tariffs took effect because it has needed to rely on discounting to move product. The price hikes will be the MSRP rate that consumers see at Nike stores and on its website. It has sent a note out to wholesale partners about the price increases, but how they’ll show up at places like *****’s Sporting Goods and Foot Locker isn’t immediately clear. I monitor internet plans for a living, and Telstra’s upcoming AU$93 price for NBN 25 is a total joke – here’s what to get instead I monitor internet plans for a living, and Telstra’s upcoming AU$93 price for NBN 25 is a total joke – here’s what to get instead Not only is it Australia’s largest telco, but Telstra is generally also the most expensive. That hasn’t stopped it from announcing it will be increasing phone and internet prices across many of its offerings, placing the NBN plans in particular into unfathomably expensive territory in the process. The changes will take effect from July 1, aligning with NBN Co’s planned wholesale cost increases, although Telstra says the price hikes will enable it to “keep investing in our network, products and services while responding to increased data usage”. Affected NBN plans include NBN 25, NBN 50 and NBN 100. In some unexpected good news, the telco’s NBN 250 and NBN 1000 plans are actually coming down in price, although only by AU$1 and AU$11 a month, respectively. You can view a complete table of Telstra’s planned price changes in the image below, but the standout for me has to be the NBN 25 plan, which is increasing from an already-expensive AU$89 a month to an insane AU$93. (Image credit: Telstra) I expect other NBN providers to increase the monthly cost of their NBN 25 plans come July 1, but Telstra’s offering is already the most expensive by as much as AU$50 a month. So for it to go up even further is seriously baffling. For context, you can get Spintel’s NBN 1000 plan, which advertises 30x faster download speeds than Telstra’s 25Mbps plan, for AU$90 a month. My expert-approved plans to get instead I’ve previously recommended some plans to beat the expected price hikes, but here I’m simply going to show you the value that can be found elsewhere for the same, or similar, monthly cost as Telstra’s NBN 25 plan. Realistically, it’s not a particularly hard job. • View more of the best NBN 25 plans The fact that virtually all of the NBN providers I monitor advertise maximum plan speeds on an NBN 25 plan, the cheapest option should serve you just as well as the most expensive option. Unsurprisingly, then, it’s the cheapest option that I’m going to recommend. If neither of those options suit you, there are plenty of great internet deals to be found elsewhere from a range of popular providers. Donald Trump news: US President humiliates South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in Oval office Donald Trump news: US President humiliates South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in Oval office In another stunning White House visit, US President Donald Trump has humiliated South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in front of the world’s media, accusing his country of human rights violations. President Trump sat side-by-side with Mr Ramaphosa in the Oval Office on Wednesday and proceeded to chastise him for his country’s treatment of white farmers and for the ever-growing ******* rate and killing sprees reported in the media. At one point Mr Trump held up page printouts of world news stories documenting the violence in South Africa and lectured Mr Ramaphosa on his ability to stem the violence. The United States administration recently granted asylum to a group of white South African farmers wanting to flee South Africa prompting President Trump to describe the situation in South Africa as “white genocide.” “We have many people that feel they’re being persecuted, and they’re coming to the United States. So we take from many … locations, if we feel there’s persecution or genocide going on,” Mr Trump said during the meeting. “Generally, they’re white farmers and they’re fleeing South Africa, and it’s a very sad thing to see. But I hope we can have an explanation of that because I know you don’t want that” The meeting began in an upbeat manner as the pair discussed trade ideals and governance in their respective countries, then as visitors and advisers in the room squirmed, Mr Trump asked aids to dim the lights and showed a video purporting to show violence in South Africa. Mr Ramaphosa mostly sat expressionless while the video was played, occasionally craning his neck to look at it and added he “had not seen that before”, and that he would “like to find out what the location was”. Trump said the video showed the graves of thousands of white farmers. Trump then displayed printed copies of articles that he said showed white South Africans who had been killed, saying “death, death” as he flipped through them. Ramaphosa said there was crime in South Africa, and the majority of victims were ******. Trump cut him off and said: “The farmers are not ******.” Ramaphosa responded: “These are concerns we are willing to talk to you about.” In recent months, Trump has criticised South Africa’s land reform law aimed at redressing the injustices of apartheid and its genocide court case against Israel. He has cancelled aid, expelled South Africa’s ambassador and offered refuge to white ********* Afrikaners based on racial discrimination claims that officials in Pretoria say are unfounded. Trump has accused South Africa of seizing land from white farmers and of fuelling violence against white landowners with “hateful rhetoric and government actions”. South African authorities say these claims are inaccurate and “fail to recognise South Africa’s profound and painful history,” meaning its long history of domination by white colonialists, enshrined in the “apartheid” system. – with AAP. Ange glory! Spurs deliver lifeline with Europa triumph Ange glory! Spurs deliver lifeline with Europa triumph Ange Postecoglou has delivered the greatest triumph of his career, clutching a potentially job-saving lifeline by steering beleaguered Tottenham Hotspur to Europa League glory in Spain. The trailblazing boss became the first *********** manager to win a trophy in a major European club competition as Spurs beat fellow Premier League strugglers Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao on Wednesday for their first silverware in 17 years. A scrappy first-half goal from their top scorer Brennan Johnson was ultimately enough to give Spurs victory in a poor-quality final during which they had to survive a tsunami of late pressure from Ruben Amorim’s otherwise feeble United. But as a proud Postecoglou and his side celebrated the drought-busting victory at the San Mames Stadium with their ecstatic fans, the only question that remained was whether victory, which guarantees Champions League football for Spurs next season, would be enough to save the 59-year-old from the sack. There’s been widespread speculation that he is already doomed, regardless of the result. If so, what a glorious way for ‘Big Ange’ to make a grand exit – with Spurs’ first European trophy for 41 years. ‘Fake cop’ at ******* scene arrested after the real cops asked him for his credentials ‘Fake cop’ at ******* scene arrested after the real cops asked him for his credentials A South Carolina man has been arrested after he impersonated a cop at a crime scene and got into a kerfuffle with the real ones, authorities said. On May 12, Julio Santos-Hernandez visited the scene where 18-year-old Tra’sean White had been fatally shot in Hanahan, about a 30-minute drive northwest of Charleston, South Carolina, according to officials. While at the scene, Hernandez posed as an off-duty officer to cops with the Hanahan Police Department, court documents obtained by WCSC stated. He even assisted authorities in arresting someone, according to the report. It’s unclear why Hernandez was at the scene in the first place. Julio Santos-Hernandez of South Carolina was arrested for impersonating a law enforcement officer at a crime scene (Berkeley County Jail) Hernandez claimed to have his credentials and gun with him, but when asked by the cops to show the credentials, he said he left them at home, per police. He said he’d retrieve his credentials, but he never did, cops said. At one point during the incident, Hernandez was asked by a sergeant to leave the scene, but he just went over to another officer and continued to claim he was an off-duty cop, according to authorities. He also told investigators he was a “deputy” while on the phone with them. Hernandez was later arrested for impersonating a law enforcement officer. In a statement to WCSC, Hernandez maintained his innocence: “As a former law enforcement officer with nearly 11 years of dedicated service, I am resolute in my intention to clear my name and protect the integrity of my reputation, meticulously built over a decade of public service.” “I am grateful for the continued support of my colleagues, friends, and family during this challenging time,” he continued. “Our shared commitment to truth and justice motivates me to see this through to a fair and just conclusion. I appreciate your understanding and support as I navigate this personal and professional trial.” Hernandez does have a work history at several South Carolina law enforcement agencies, per records from the state’s Criminal Justice Academy obtained by WCSC. He voluntarily resigned from his most recent stint at the Charleston County Aviation Authority in October 2024. In 2016, Hernandez was fired from the Rock Hill Police Department for a policy violation, but it did not involve any misconduct. Helldivers 2 reveals about how many people play it weekly Helldivers 2 reveals about how many people play it weekly It’s no secret that Helldivers 2 has had its ups and downs, from requiring PSN to play the game on PC (which has since been thrown into the bin) to winning awards (such as Best Multiplayer). Even so, Arrowhead CCO Johan Pilestedt has shared about how many players continue to play it on a weekly basis. Taking to Twitter, Pilestedt shared about 2.5 million players play every week and that he’s excited to see what sort of spike they’ll get with the Heart of Democracy patch, which adds new weapons, enemies, and customizations. Around 2.5 million Helldivers playing the game every week, super excited to see how many more log in with this update! So happy and blessed that we have such an amazing community! — Pilestedt (@Pilestedt) May 20, 2025 It’s unclear how long Helldivers 2 will continue chugging along, but it sounds like Arrowhead is in for the long haul, stating as long as people are playing it and buying Super Credits, it’ll continue supporting the game. In Helldivers 2 review, we said: “Helldivers 2 is the best game of 2024 so far, only being held back by the fact that the small team at Arrowhead Studios was not expecting so many players to flood the servers at launch. Since then, the significant issues have been fixed, and it is clear that Arrowhead is committed to continuing to fix technical problems as well as adding new content like mechs.” Gabriel Stanford-Reisinger Editor-in-Chief Gabe has been a gamer since he was young, playing games like Pajama Sam, Freddi Fish, Guitar Hero, and whatever looked cool on GameFly. Trump urged to make Elon Musk certify DOGE data restricted Trump urged to make Elon Musk certify DOGE data restricted Elon Musk listens as reporters ask U.S. President Donald Trump and South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa questions during a press availability in the Oval Office at the White House on May 21, 2025 in Washington, DC. Chip Somodevilla | Getty Images Sen. Jeanne Shaheen urged President Donald Trump on Wednesday to require billionaire Elon Musk and special government employees of his DOGE project to certify before leaving government service that they cannot use for personal benefit any non-public government data they gained access to. Shaheen, D-N.H., in a letter to Trump, noted that the Tesla CEO Musk and DOGE employees have “unprecedented” access to “vast swathes of some of the most sensitive U.S. government data” across a broad range of federal agencies. DOGE, whose employees include veterans of Musk’s companies, has reportedly accessed data in the Social Security Administration, the Treasury Department, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and several others, the letter said. Her letter was first reported by NBC News. Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency has, at Trump’s behest, slashed or sought to eliminate federal agencies, their personnel and other resources. The agencies targeted include ones that are tasked with regulatory oversight of Musk’s companies. “I am very concerned that SGEs [special government employees], many of whom come from the tech field, may return to the private sector and use nonpublic information from the federal government to give their personal business activities an unfair and anticompetitive boost,” Shaheen wrote Trump. U.S. Senator and Committee Ranking Member Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) is seen during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmation hearing on Capitol Hill on March 4, 2025. Craig Hudson | The Washington Post | Getty Images The letter noted that Steve Bannon, the right-wing provocateur who served as a top White House advisor to Trump in his first stint in office, “shares my concern.” “According to a recent report: ‘Bannon also said he wants a letter of certification showing that no one has taken any data from the Trump administration or government, to which Semafor’s editor-in-chief Ben Smith asked, “Sounds like you don’t trust [Musk] not to take data?” “Trust, but verify,” Bannon responded.’ ” Shaheen wrote. A senior White House official called the senator’s letter “pointless.” The official added in a statement to NBC that “SGEs are already required to abide by executive branch ethics rules including the rules relating to misuse of position or other government resources or information.” Musk, who is the world’s wealthiest person, was Trump’s biggest financial backer in the 2024 elections. He runs a portfolio of businesses that include electric vehicle maker Tesla, and the aerospace and defense contractor SpaceX, which includes Starlink, a satellite-based wireless internet service. His newest venture, xAI, develops artificial intelligence models and products, such as the AI chatbot Grok, which require huge amounts of training data. xAI recently merged with X, the social media company previously known as Twitter. Musk’s 130-day term limit as a special government employee is rapidly approaching, as is that of some of his DOGE staffers. While some DOGE staffers are poised to take longer-term government jobs, others may soon move to the private sector. That has raised questions about the protection of sensitive data and systems they accessed during their tenure at DOGE. X is already in hot water with Canada’s privacy watchdog, which is investigating whether the company used personal data to train Grok without users’ consent. Musk has claimed that DOGE saved money for the federal government. But a New York Times analysis and others have found that DOGE and Musk have repeatedly overstated the impact of their work. The Partnership of Public Service estimated that DOGE could cost taxpayers $135 billion this fiscal year, due in part to the cost of firing and putting workers on paid leave, and also because of the rehiring of terminated employees whose talents are still needed. In an interview Tuesday with CNBC anchor David Faber, Musk said that DOGE will have reduced the federal government’s spending by $160 billion from 2025 to 2026, which he characterized as “16% of the way towards a trillion in five months.” Musk and DOGE initially aimed to cut $2 trillion from the federal budget. But they later walked that goal back to $1 trillion. Source link #Trump #urged #Elon #Musk #certify #DOGE #data #restricted Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

Second wave ‘adult crime, adult time’ laws pass Second wave ‘adult crime, adult time’ laws pass Kids as young as 10 will face adult jail time for a range of new offences after a state government passed its second tranche of controversial youth crime laws. The “adult crime, adult time” laws now include 20 more offences after passing through during a late-night sitting in Queensland Parliament on Wednesday. Young offenders can now face lengthy adult sentences for attempted *******, *****, ******* assault, torture and kidnapping. “It is a significant day,” Attorney-General Deb Frecklington told reporters. It is the second wave of the laws that were central to the Liberal National government’s pitch to voters at the 2024 election. The first wave passed before Christmas despite outrage from youth advocates due to the lack of consultation, ensuring kids as young as 10 would face life sentences for *******, manslaughter and adult jail time for offences like grievous bodily harm. The expansion of “adult crime, adult time” came in the wake of several serious crimes, including a teenager who was charged with attempted ******* following the alleged stabbing attack on a supermarket worker in Ipswich. But there has been long-running criticism from the United Nations and local human rights groups condemning Queensland’s laws as causing undue suffering to kids. “We are extremely concerned that present approaches are creating a future underclass of Australians,” the latest statement from the United Nations’ Alice Jill Edwards and Albert K Barume said. However, the criticism has fallen on deaf ears with Queensland’s premier. “Here’s my message to the United Nations: you don’t control me, and I don’t answer you, I answer to Queenslanders,” Premier David Crisafulli told reporters. “We make laws to deal with one of the biggest issues the state has ever faced, and it’s a generation of repeat, hardcore young offenders who were created by weak laws.” This second wave of laws is not expected to be the last as the state continues to consult an expert legal panel for any further necessary changes. “This will not be the last round of changes there will be more to come,” Mr Crisafulli said. “Every change we make will be about strengthening the laws, not weakening them.” The government has previously been criticised for refusing to release the expert legal panel advice on the law changes and has again ruled out publishing the information for the time being. “I made a commitment that we would allow them to provide advice free from political interference and we would enable them to continue to do that while they had work to do,” Mr Crisafulli said. “I think that’s reasonable.” Other states and territories have also cracked down on youth crime amid Queensland’s law changes. The Northern Territory is strengthening its bail laws following the fatal stabbing of a 71-year-old Darwin store owner allegedly at the hands of a teenager. Victoria recently removed remand as a last resort for children while NSW made it harder for 14 to 18-year-olds to be released on serious charges while out on bail for similar offences. BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff accused of ********* assaulting woman in 2023 in new lawsuit BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff accused of ********* assaulting woman in 2023 in new lawsuit Content warning: This article contains depictions of alleged ******* assault. BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff has been accused of ******* assault in a new lawsuit filed on Wednesday, according to The Salt Lake Tribune. Advertisement A Salt Lake County woman filed an anonymous lawsuit on Wednesday that accused Retzlaff of ********* assaulting her in November 2023. The woman also reported the incident to the police, though Retzlaff has not been criminally charged. In her lawsuit, the woman said that Retzlaff assaulted her in 2023 after they had first connected on social media about a month earlier. The woman and a friend had gone to Retzlaff’s home to hang out one night, per the report, and the woman stayed back after her friend left. Retzlaff and the woman then started watching a movie in his room and eventually started kissing. The woman said in her lawsuit that she “did not want to do anything more” than that, but Retzlaff continued to try to “escalate things.” Retzlaff allegedly tried touching her ********* and told her to give him *********. After the woman “reacted in a way that made Retzlaff angry,” the lawsuit claims, Retzlaff “started to shout at her.” The woman tried to call someone on her phone, but realized it was dead and started to charge it. As she was lying on his bed waiting for her phone to power up, the woman said Retzlaff briefly fell asleep. Advertisement Eventually, the woman said that Retzlaff woke up again and started forcefully kissing and touching her. She repeatedly told him to stop, per the report, but Retzlaff continued and ended up having sex with her. The woman went to a hospital a few days later to have a ***** kit examination done. She reported the incident to the police, too, but initially did not name Retzlaff out of fear. She later told Provo police Retzlaff’s name after an officer asked her who he was because “someone else filed a complaint against a football player, and the police wanted to see if it was the same person.” That same officer later encouraged her not to do anything about it, per the report, as “******* assault victims never get jsutice.” Neither Retzlaff’s family, BYU police nor Provo police responded to The Tribune’s requests for comment. The woman is suing Retzlaff for alleged battery, assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Retzlaff transferred in to BYU in 2023, and he led the program last season as its starting quarterback. The 21-year-old threw for 2,947 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while leading the Cougars to an 11-2 record. Retzlaff is the first Jewish starting quarterback at BYU, too. The school is run by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and holds all students to a strict honor code that includes prohibiting premarital and extramarital sex whether or not they are a member of the ******* church. The school has punished athletes in the past for violating these rules. In 2011, for example, Brandon Davies was dismissed from the basketball team after he admitted to having ******* relations in violation of the honor code. It’s unclear if Retzlaff will face discipline from the school. Pressure builds on Apple as Jony Ive teams with OpenAI Pressure builds on Apple as Jony Ive teams with OpenAI Apple CEO Tim Cook (L) and Apple chief design officer Jony Ive (R) look at the new Mac Pro during the 2019 Apple Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) at the San Jose Convention Center on June 03, 2019 in San Jose, California. Justin Sullivan | Getty Images Before Jony Ive left Apple in 2019, no major Apple hardware launch was complete without a video highlighting the product’s physical design, narrated by Ive’s gentle British accent. He became a touchstone in Silicon Valley for great hardware because of his role in the creation of the iPhone and Apple Watch. On Wednesday, Ive returned to the computer industry with a new video, but it wasn’t launching a new Apple product. Instead, Ive announced a $6.4 billion deal that will merge his nascent hardware firm, called io, with OpenAI. Ive will head up the design for a new series of AI hardware products. The announcement underscores the growing sense in Silicon Valley that smart artificial intelligence assistants could upend the gadget world, displacing the laptops and smartphones that Apple currently builds with new products that look and function totally differently. “Tech shifts like the internet, the smartphone, and AI only happen once in a generation. OpenAI is catalyzing this shift into something tangible,” longtime Apple analyst Gene Munster posted on X on Wednesday. Even Apple executives have said that AI hardware could threaten its iPhone business. Eddy Cue, Apple’s chief of services, said in court earlier this month that he believes AI devices could replace the iPhone within 10 years, “crazy as that sounds,” he said. “AI is a new technology shift, and it’s creating new opportunities for new entrants,” Cue said. Meanwhile, Apple’s big improvement to its built-in assistant, Siri, was delayed earlier this year. One of the core features of Apple Intelligence, the company’s suite of AI features, was the integration with OpenAI for ChatGPT to handle the queries that Apple Intelligence couldn’t. And Siri still functions like a question-and-answer system, instead of a fluent conversationalist, like ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini. Apple’s next opportunity to show off what it’s been working on is on June 9 at its annual WWDC conference in Cupertino. It’s where Apple first revealed Apple Intelligence last year, and where it typically announces its latest software for iPhones, iPads, and Macs. OpenAI’s announcement was light on details about what kinds of products the new OpenAI hardware workforce will design and build. The company says that it will show off what it’s working on next year. The next big thing Wednesday’s announcement should serve as a wake-up call to Apple now that its former guru is working with the fastest-growing company in Silicon Valley to build products that could eventually threaten its position at the top of the hardware industry. As Ive put it in the launch video: “I am absolutely certain that we are literally on the brink of a new generation of technology that can make us our better selves.” Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, said he was excited to partner with Ive to “try to create a new generation of AI-powered computers.” Humane’s AI Pin is equipped with a voice assistant and camera. Arjun Kharpal | CNBC While Ive will continue to head up his design firm called LoveFrom, OpenAI is getting an injection of full-time talent with Apple backgrounds. Scott Cannon, ***** Tan and Evans Hankey, all Apple design veterans, and co-founders of io, are joining OpenAI. While there hasn’t been a hit AI consumer hardware product yet, several startups have tried to create devices that use AI to shrink their physical footprints and simplify the user experience. Former Apple employees founded Humane, which created a small pin with a projector that could make calls and answer questions. Humane’s $700 product didn’t sell and the company was sold to HP. Early adopters can also buy the Rabbit R1, a small square gadget that costs $199 and uses an OpenAI model to answer questions. Reviews for the gadget were bad. Ive told Bloomberg on Wednesday they were “bad products.” Apple’s megacap rivals are increasingly seizing on AI-powered assistants as a way to differentiate their products as well. Meta employee Sara Nicholson poses with the Ray-Ban sunglasses at the Meta Connect annual event at the company’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California, U.S., September 24, 2024. Manuel Orbegozo | Reuters Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses have been a pleasant surprise in the marketplace, with over 2 million pairs sold, and the Facebook parent is running ads where the glasses can answer questions conversationally using the company’s Llama AI models in addition to capturing video with the glasses’ built-in cameras. On Tuesday, Google, which competes with Apple through its Android mobile operating system, announced a slew of new AI models and features, including a full video generator, and new smartglasses prototypes running software called Android XR that will be made by companies like Warby Parker. Google also said that its Gemini assistant could go into “agent mode” to get stuff done — similar to Apple’s delayed Siri improvement. While Google brings most of its Gemini features to the iPhone through its apps, users can’t make it the default assistant option over Siri. Representatives for Apple and OpenAI didn’t return requests for comment.
