World’s largest battery manufacturer achieves revolutionary breakthrough with new technology: ‘A key development’
World’s largest battery manufacturer achieves revolutionary breakthrough with new technology: ‘A key development’
The world’s largest electric vehicle battery maker has hit a remarkable benchmark.
China-based Contemporary Amperex Technologies, or CATL, is mass-producing sodium-ion batteries, bringing to fruition a technology that has the potential to replace common lithium-ion chemistry, according to a news release from the company.
“With sodium’s inherent safety and abundant reserves, it efficiently reduces dependence on lithium resources and strengthens the foundation of new energy technologies, while promoting energy utilization from ‘single resource dependence’ to ‘energy freedom,'” CATL said in the statement.
Experts worldwide are studying sodium-based batteries for those reasons and others. A lower energy density — or the amount of power the pack can store per pound — compared to lithium has been a holdup, CleanTechnica reported.
CATL’s Naxtra Battery, made for passenger EVs with a version for heavy-duty start-stop use, seems to solve the problem. The passenger pack can provide over 310 miles of range. That’s superior to the median for model-year 2024 EVs, which was reported at 283 miles by the U.S. Energy Department. Those rides are mostly all powered by lithium-ion cells.
The packs can also safely operate between minus 40 degrees and 178 degrees Fahrenheit while maintaining 90% of “usable power” at the coldest mark. It can function for more than 10,000 cycles, all per CATL. New Atlas added that it equates to 3.6 million miles driving before significant capacity loss.
Watch now: How bad is a gas stove for your home’s indoor air quality?
On the heavy-duty side, Naxtra’s 24-volt product is meant to replace lead-acid packs in dirty combustion vehicles, with an eight-year life cycle. There’s also a 61% reduction in costs during that time compared to traditional types.
It’s built to handle frequent restarts for rigs with engines that stop when idling. It’s a fuel-saving trick that’s been in use for more than a decade. The tech made headlines in the April 2011 issue of Car and Driver, for reference. The Naxtra battery is said to be able to fire a start after being idle for a year, all per CATL.
“Compared to lead-acid batteries, it is more efficient, eco-friendly, and economical, driving commercial vehicles into a lead-free era where vehicle and battery age as one,” per the statement.
While that is impressive, fully electric and cleaner haulers are already on the road, including from Tesla. A 24-hour EV rig from Danfoss is being developed in Denmark, among other projects.
If you were going to purchase an EV, which of these factors would be most important to you?

Click your choice to see results and speak your mind.
Naxtra’s passenger version ideally parks gas burners, preventing planet-warming tailpipe exhaust linked by medical experts to lung, heart, and other health risks, including dementia. Diesel exhaust is “thought to be a likely human carcinogen,” according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
Sodium chemistry is coming in all sizes, with a huge stationary storage unit recently going online in China. It can store enough renewable energy to power 12,000 homes a day.
Other breakthroughs in various stages of development include lithium iron phosphate and even cannabis cars. As you might guess, the chemistry for the latter pack is unique.
The experts are trying to reduce the tens of millions of tons of deposits that Sustainability by Numbers reported will need to be mined and processed to power clean energy goals by 2040. While that is a lot, it’s nowhere near the 16.5 billion tons of fossil fuels mined annually, per the findings.
Sodium’s abundance and easier extraction could limit the impact of battery-making even more.
However, lithium-ion batteries remain reliable and safe, with rides owned by more people than ever. And now is a great time to buy one stateside, as tax credits to offset the cost are still available. That’s in addition to the loads of cash you can bank annually by eliminating gas and/or maintenance expenses.
Adding a home solar panel system can increase your savings. The abundant sunrays can provide juice for your EV, and they are applicable for tax breaks, as well. EnergySage offers free online support to help you navigate the process and even find an installer.
For CATL’s part, company experts envision a salty future for EVs.
“The performance breakthrough of sodium-ion batteries is a key development in the full scenario application of batteries,” the CATL statement said.

Unlock These Four Houses for Free in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered
Unlock These Four Houses for Free in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered
The Oblivion Remastered has been the talk of the town for a while since it was shadow-dropped almost a month ago, and players cannot help but rush to finish the game to 100% completion. The game garnered more than 4 million players just three days after its release, and by the first week of May, the game had become the best-selling game of the year.
Although the Oblivion Remastered has gone through a complete overhaul, one little problem still exists that is more of an annoyance to the players than a substantial technical glitch. Of course, we are talking about the storage issue, which becomes a huge problem for any player who is running a little low on money and needs a place to store their essentials.
So, we present you with four houses that any player can call their own for absolutely free, and they even come with benefits.
1 Battlehorn Castle
Battlehorn Castle has servants who see to your needs | Image Credits: Bethesda Game Studios
As the name suggests, Battlehorn Castle is not really a house, it is a full-fledged castle that is filled with everything you ever need. The castle has servants who provide you with food, drinks, and a wine that boosts your stats, and there are also guards and trainers who will fight with you for training.
The castle is found to the West of Chorrol on the ****** Road, and it can be owned completely for free by completing the “Battlehorn Castle” quest, which is basically just venturing towards the castle and defeating the bandits outside of it. Although the castle is kind of costly with the upgrades, it’s worth the hassle considering you get a whole castle to yourself in Oblivion.
2 Dunbarrow Cove
Dunbarrow Cove was riddled with pirate skeletons | Image Credits: Bethesda Game Studios
The Dunbarrow Cove is basically a cave located behind and under Anvil Castle. The cove cradles the infamous ****** Flag, the flagship of the Red Sabre pirates, which becomes the player’s house after they rid the cove of all the Red Sabre skeletons, and don’t forget to head into the captain’s quarters and kill Cap’n Dugal as well.
The Dunbarrow Cove was part of Oblivion’s Thieves Den DLC, but it can be found in the remastered version of the game for free. Players can find the cove by going to Anvil Castle and heading beneath the small isle, where they will find the Smugglers Cave, and going inside it will reveal the Dunbarrow Cove. The house can be upgraded by talking to Dahlia Rackham at the Sea Tub Clarabella.
3 Deepscorn Hollow
Deepscorn Hollow is for the outcasts | Image Credits: Bethesda Game Studios
Deepscorn Hollow is also a cave and a house that was added in Oblivion’s official plug-in known as The Vile Lair. This house is a safe haven for players who are going for a vampire build or are living a life of wickedness and searching for refuge. The house can be owned by completing the “Deepscorn Hollow” quest, which involves reading a note and unlocking every upgrade.
This cave has two entrances, and to start the questline, you need to head south of Leyawiin, then go underwater to see a broken log surrounded by castle ruins. Head inside the hollowed-out log and then through the door there. Once inside, you can read Greywyn’s Journal, located on your left, and start the quest.
4 Frostcraig Spire
Frostcraig Spire is a wizard’s dream house | Image Credits: Bethesda Game Studios
Coming to the absolute best house in Oblivion, which is Frostcraig Spire, which is although being a wizard’s dream home, is sought by everyone in the game. It was included as a part of Oblivion’s Wizard’s Tower DLC, and it offers a whole lot of amenities for anyone with a mage build.
From enchanting and spell-making altars to portals to every mage guild in the game, Frostcraig Spire is an absolute unit in Oblivion. The large snowy structure is located east of the city of Bruma in the Jeral Mountains of Cyrodill. While it might feel kinda far off from the hustle and bustle of the city, some wizards just want to enjoy that peace.

Dell S3225QC monitor review: awesome visuals and sound, but where are the ports?
Dell S3225QC monitor review: awesome visuals and sound, but where are the ports?
Why you can trust TechRadar
We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.
Dell S3225QC: two-minute review
The Dell S3225QC offers a unique value proposition. I want to say that it’s the best value 32-inch all-rounder if you want awesome 4K OLED picture quality and epic integrated sound, backed up by a serviceable 120Hz refresh rate and a satisfying contrasting figure of 1500000:1, but there are a handful of things holding back my praise.
Dell has positioned the S3225QC as an all-rounder, claiming that its mix of features is “perfect for play, school and work” when it was announced back at CES 2025 in January. At first principles I think this monitor is capable of shifting between these different use cases quite well – the 5 x 5W speakers that run across the bottom of the display output brilliant audio, the screen itself doesn’t blur text and is perfect for a mix of writing documents, viewing content and playing games, and the 32-inch size is definitely a boon for blowing up whatever task you’re performing.
Backed up by a design that’s fairly inoffensive and doesn’t take up much space on a desk, the S3225QC may be the perfect multitasking display for your home or office. The addition of two USB-C ports on the back and an accessible USB-C port on the front is also very welcome, especially for quickly charging a phone or mouse, or for transferring data to your computer in a pinch. One port pops in and out of the monitor, allowing it to be tucked away when not used.

Additionally, unlike some OLED monitors, the display doesn’t have annoying care programs – shortly after the monitor is turned off following a lengthy ******* of use, it’ll automatically shift into refreshing mode, which will take between six and eight minutes. Dell recommends refreshing the pixels every four hours, but I wasn’t bugged once about doing this.
However there’s one big thing that’s holding Dell’s new OLED monitor back – its severe lack of ports.
I’m annoyed that the only inputs for displaying audio and video are HDMI and a Display Port-capable USB-C, and my particular use case, as somebody who bases everything they do in their home around a monitor, kind of underscores this as a weakness (so please excuse my incoming tangent). Most streaming services don’t show video in the highest resolution when functioning through a browser, and to watch Andor on Disney+ in all its glory, I wanted to connect my Google TV streamer to the S3225QC.
(Image credit: Zachariah Kelly / TechRadar)
But the Google TV Streamer, as you’d expect, uses HDMI to connect to a display – I couldn’t use the Display Port-capable USB-C connection, as the TV Streamer doesn’t output audio and video through its USB-C port, and so my only solution was to physically swap the HDMI cord between my PC and the Streamer.
It’s not the end of the world and indeed the monitor displayed 4K streaming content brilliantly, along with all the things I played, but it begs the question: why are there only two audio/video inputs in the first place? This will surely be an issue for folks in similar positions looking for a more encompassing all-rounder solution, and this lack of connections is anomalous among similarly priced screens.
For people that might have one primary computer connected via HDMI and, separately, a laptop via the DP-Alt USB-C, this is unlikely to be a problem – but still be ready to factor in purchasing a USB-C to HDMI or USB-C to Display Port cable to get over these hurdles depending on what you’re doing at your PC. A quick and easy solution may be an external HDMI splitter.
Dell S3225QC: price and availability
(Image credit: Zachariah Kelly / TechRadar)
How much does it cost? $799.99 / £879 / AU$1,299.10
When is it available? Available now (not currently listed on Dell US)
Where can you get it? Dell’s website in the US, *** and Australia
For a monitor that comes with high-quality integrated audio, an OLED panel and a massive 32-inch size, the Dell S3225QC is priced quite competitively. There are very few monitors on the market that are offering this particular combination of features, which makes it difficult to compare, but the feature set is pretty impressive.
The price is slightly undermined by a couple of factors, the foremost being a lack of input ports, with only HDMI and a USB-C (DP-Alt) available. Another is the comparatively low refresh rate for an OLED panel, limited to 120Hz at a maximum 4K resolution. There is, however, a built-in USB hub, so keyboards, mice and other peripherals are able to connect directly to the PC via the monitor’s USB-C ports.
If you’re shopping for an alternative, I’d recommend the MSI MPG 271QRX (a 27-inch gaming OLED monitor with a higher refresh rate) or the Dell UltraSharp U3225QE (a non-OLED 32-inch monitor with similar specs, more ports and a lower price).

Dell S3225QC: design
(Image credit: Zachariah Kelly / TechRadar)
Inoffensive design with white colorway
Speakers across the entire bottom
Nice USB-C placement
The Dell S3225QC is designed to be an all-purpose monitor, and so it has a neutral design without anything too jarring. The monitor is only available in a white colorway with an anti-glare matte OLED panel, sitting atop five integrated speakers.
While this speaker system appears at first glance to have a webcam inbuilt, it’s actually a proximity sensor that detects the user’s distance from the screen and adjusts sound quality accordingly. More on that in the Features section.
The stand has a coarse texture to it and is completely white. It doesn’t take up much room, with the stand consisting of a long cylindrical pole and the monitor footing being a flat rectangle. The monitor doesn’t take up too much room on a desk and has a fair amount of height, tilt and swivel adjustment to it.
(Image credit: Zachariah Kelly / TechRadar)
One of the USB-C ports physically moves in and out from underneath the monitor, allowing for quick access. It’s an interesting aspect of the monitor that seems a little overdesigned – while popping a component in and out is convenient, I’m confused as to why this needs to move at all.
Surely an immobile USB-C port pointed downward would have achieved the same goal without the risk of getting stuck or broken? The rest of the ports are located around the back, while the monitor’s joystick and power button can be found to the bottom right of the screen’s backside.
Dell S3225QC: features
(Image credit: Zachariah Kelly / TechRadar)
In-built speakers across the bottom
Handy USB-C port on the front with upstream/downstream support
Only two audio/video input ports (HDMI/DP via USB-C)
The Dell S3225QC is aimed at being an all encompassing display, capable of switching between work and play without a problem. It has a gorgeous screen and a handful of useful USB-C ports across the back and front, though there’s a crippling lack of audio/video ports.
The main feature propping up the all-rounder goal is the sound system running across the bottom of the display, which offers enhanced surround-sound audio made possible thanks to its spatial tracking camera. The end product is frankly the best audio I’ve ever heard from a monitor, though I did find that two red lights would often appear on the soundbar, indicating that my head couldn’t be seen by the tracking tech – meaning sound wasn’t always able to be optimized for my position. As someone whose home entertainment setup is based around their computer desk, I love monitors with inbuilt audio, so this focus on high-end audio is a win for me.
There’s a USB-C port on the front and the two USB-C ports around the back, one of which doubles as a Display Port alternative for audio/video (AV) signals, meaning you can plug your monitor in with a USB-C port and use it as a second screen. Those regular USB-C ports can serve as sockets for your laptop and keyboard while still using the DP-capable USB-C port for AV. It’s a great alternative to a dedicated USB hub, and that DP-capable USB-C port can even double as a 90W charger, meaning you won’t need a separate power cable for most connected laptops (beastly gaming models excepted).
(Image credit: Zachariah Kelly / TechRadar)
I liked how well laid-out the inbuilt operating system was, and how easy it was to quickly change settings using the joystick on the back. It’s so fast and responsive that I would often adjust things like audio directly through the monitor.
What burned me the most about the monitor was its lack of any additional HDMI or Display Port sockets. All that’s on offer is a HDMI port (4K@120Hz) and the aforementioned DP-capable USB-C port. Somebody that’s merely switching between a laptop and a desktop PC likely won’t have any issue with the ports that are in use, but for my purposes (I tend to have a Chromecast connected to my screen), the arrangement resulted in an awkward dance of unplugging and plugging in cables constantly. For a monitor billed on versatility and being able to fulfill so many needs, it’s absolutely baffling how limiting it is in its design.
Dell S3225QC: performance
(Image credit: Zachariah Kelly / TechRadar)
Epic OLED, 4K panel @ 120Hz
Deep, rich spatial sound
Ideal for productivity, fine for games
It’s tempting to say that the Dell S3225QC makes compromises to service a broad appeal, but I personally don’t think the specs reflect that – the hardware set here is solid.
Dell has sourced its 4K OLED panel from Samsung, and with the Korean tech giant so good at making such screens, it’s a win on all fronts. Colors pop perfectly and as it’s OLED, ******* are perfect as they aren’t lit by pixels. A contrast rate of 150,000:1 keeps picture quality accurate, though brightness is limited to a maximum of 250nits/1,000nits HDR peak (a fairly standard figure for an OLED, but low compared to high-end non-OLEDs).
I think the OLED panel is fairly inconsequential when you’re using the monitor for stuff like writing up documents, editing things together or simply when casually browsing the web – and you’ll be better off purchasing a much cheaper display if these are the only things you’re doing. There’s no haziness around typed characters to be seen, but these days you don’t have to go up-market for a clear monitor to do work on.
(Image credit: Zachariah Kelly / TechRadar)
It’s with stuff like gaming and streaming video that the S3225QC can really pull out the stops. The 120Hz refresh rate might seem a little low for PC gaming, but let me be clear – it’s perfectly fine, and unless you’re an especially demanding (or competitive) gamer, 120Hz is more than enough for fast and fluid gameplay. I use a fairly high-performance gaming PC and though in many games I can far exceed a 120 fps framerate, I’ve never been left wanting more.
As we’ve previously mentioned, the audio system is fitted with a spatial camera that detects how close you are to the screen. With that detected, it then adjusts the sound profile to best suit the distance. In my experience it worked brilliantly, though the sensor certainly suffered when there wasn’t much light (and I tend to keep lights off in my office… I’m a bit of a caveman).
The S3225QC will still deliver rich sound without detecting your distance from the panel, however when the sensor isn’t capable of making that measurement, it displays two dark red lights beside the camera (appearing in the image below as purple). It’s a tad annoying when watching something cinematic in the dark, as the sensor is quite reliant on being in a well-lit environment, but ultimately when it doesn’t completely work the results are harmless.

How I tested the Dell S3225QC monitor
Tested over a couple of weeks
Productivity software used include Canva, Photoshop, Google Docs, ClipChamp and Google Sheets
Also used for a mix of streaming content and playing video games
During my time with the Dell S3225QC, I tried to use the monitor as a hub for everything I did. This included using it to get work done on my laptop by connecting a MacBook Air to the display via USB-C, but also connecting my gaming computer to it for video games and my Google TV Streamer for movies and TV shows.
Most of my time with my monitor was spent using it for entertainment, playing games like Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Counter-Strike 2, Wreckfest, Forza Motorsport, R.E.P.O, Marvel Rivals and Star Wars Outlaws, but I also took time to watch plenty of Disney+, Netflix and YouTube content on the display. I also used it for music streaming via Spotify.
Of course the monitor was also used for more casual things – doomscrolling on Bluesky, browsing websites on Chrome and messaging friends on Instagram and Messenger for example.

Pacers deliver dramatic playoff win in the nick of time
Pacers deliver dramatic playoff win in the nick of time
Tyrese Haliburton has tied the game with a long jumper that bounced high off the back of the rim and in as time expired in regulation, then Indiana went on to finish off their stunning rally by beating New York 138-135 in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals.
The Knicks led by 14 points with under three minutes remaining in regulation on Wednesday night at Madison Square Garden, but Aaron Nesmith brought the Pacers back with a flurry of late three-pointers.
Haliburton then hoped he had won it with another. With the visitors down two and time running down, he started to lose control of his dribble, regained it and dribbled back out toward the three-point line. He fired up his jumper and when it finally fell in, he raced toward the sideline and made a choke signal to the crowd, like Indiana Hall of Famer Reggie Miller did to Spike Lee while leading a Pacers comeback in a playoff game in 1994.
Replay confirmed that Haliburton’s toe was on the line and it was a two-pointer that tied it at 125. Andrew Nembhard eventually made the go-ahead basket with 26 seconds remaining in overtime.
Game 2 is Friday night, also in New York.
Haliburton had 31 points and 11 assists, while Nesmith finished with 30 points, going 8 for 9 from outside.
It was a thrilling start to the ninth playoff matchup between these fierce rivals from the 1990s — but a deflating finish for the Knicks in their first Eastern Conference finals game since 2000.
Jalen Brunson scored 43 points and Karl-Anthony Towns had 35 points and 12 rebounds. But New York couldn’t protect the big lead they built while Brunson was on the bench in foul trouble in the fourth quarter and had a collapse unlike any other in the post-season.
Teams leading by at least 14 points in the final 2:45 of the final ******* had been 994-0 since detailed play-by-play began being kept in 1997-98.

Valencia High School student arrested after last month’s explosion in Plum Canyon: report
Valencia High School student arrested after last month’s explosion in Plum Canyon: report
A Valencia High School student has been arrested in connection with an explosion in Plum Canyon Park last month.
The park, which reportedly has been a regular site of ******** fireworks launches, was endangered by a brief brush fire on April 28, the Santa Clarita Valley Signal reports.
Video captured by Lilly Chiang shows fireworks begin set off in Plum Canyon on Dec. 30, 2024.
On Wednesday, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told the Signal that a high schooler had been arrested in connection with an explosion in the canyon.
The identity of that student, believed to be a minor, has not been released, but school officials seemed to confirm that the arrest happened on campus before 10 a.m.
By 10:30 a.m., Principal Kullen Welch alerted the school community to the presence of law enforcement on campus and assured everyone that they were not in danger.
“I want to inform you that there was a police presence on campus this morning due to an investigation related to an off-campus incident,” Welch said in an email obtained by KTLA. “Please rest assured that there is no threat to our school community, and the campus remains safe. School is proceeding as usual, and we even had the pleasure of celebrating our outstanding student-athletes during a special signing day event at brunch. Thank you for your continued support.”
Deputy Molina confirmed to KTLA that a minor was arrested on Valencia’s campus, and that arrest was connected to the service of a search warrant near the intersection of Copper Hill Drive and Haskell Canyon Road in Saugus.
That site is nearly four miles from the entrance to the park.

Xpeng shares soar 10% in Hong Kong as ******** carmaker forecasts upbeat revenue

******** electric-vehicle maker Xpeng saw its shares in Hong Kong surge over 10% Thursday following upbeat earnings and stronger-than-expected revenue forecast for the second quarter.
Its shares soared as much as 10.2% to 85.5 Hong Kong dollars ($10.86), and were last trading 7% higher, taking year-to-date gains to 78%.
The Guangzhou-based carmaker’s first-quarter revenue more than doubled from a year earlier, driven by robust sales.
Xpeng said it delivered 94,008 vehicles in the first three months this year, more than four times the sales volume a year earlier.
That improved top line helped narrow its net loss for the first quarter to 664 million yuan, compared to 1.37 billion yuan a year ago, and lifted its gross margin to 15.6% for the quarter from 12.9% a year earlier.
The company is a key player in China’s hypercompetitive EV market, but has struggled to turn a profit amid rising competition and sluggish domestic demand.
Analysts widely expect Xpeng will likely turn profitable in the fourth quarter this year, thanks to its strong sales momentum and pipeline of new models.
The company has launched several new products, including the mass-market brand MONA last August and a renewed flagship model X9, featuring advanced autonomous driving system.
The automaker said it aims to begin mass production of vehicles equipped with Level 3 autonomous driving features in China by year-end, a significant upgrade from the currently more common Level 2 systems.
For the second quarter, Xpeng said it anticipates a revenue of 17.5 billion yuan to 18.7 billion yuan, compared with consensus forecast of 17.2 billion yuan, according to data compiled by LSEG.
It expects to deliver 102,000 and 108,000 of electric cars in the second quarter — a jump of around 237.7% to 257.5% from a year earlier.
That optimistic earning forecast lifted investor sentiment, sending Xpeng’s U.S.-listed shares 13% higher to close at $22.25, powering a year-to-date rally of over 88%. Still, it is well off its record of more than $72 apiece hit in November 2020, according to LSEG data.
Rival BYD has seen shares in Hong Kong surge over 74% so far this year, Li Auto has risen more than 22%, while NIO has lost over 11%.

2 Israeli embassy staff killed in Washington DC shooting
2 Israeli embassy staff killed in Washington DC shooting
Two Israeli embassy staff were killed outside a Jewish museum in downtown Washington DC, according to US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.
The victims, a man and woman, were shot while exiting an event at the Capital Jewish Museum, sources told the BBC’s news partner CBS, adding that the incident appears targeted.
The shooting happened at 21:05 local time around 3rd and F Streets NW, an area with numerous tourist sites, museums and government buildings, including an FBI’s Washington field office.
Reports indicate that multiple employees of the Israeli embassy were at a museum event at the time of the shooting.
“We are actively investigating and working to get more information to share,” Noem posted on X. “Please pray for the families of the victims. We will bring this depraved perpetrator to justice.”
Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations called the incident a “depraved act of anti-Semitic terrorism”.
“Harming diplomats and the Jewish community is crossing a red line,” Ambassador Danny Danon wrote on X. “We are confident that the US authorities will take strong action against those responsible for this criminal act.”
The incident triggered a major police response and shut down several core streets in the city. The victims were identified as a man and woman, local media reported, but their names have not been released.
A search is underway for the attacker. Sources tell CBS, the BBC’s US partner, that the suspect is a goateed man wearing blue jeans and a blue jacket.
The Capitol campus of Georgetown University alwasy was locked down, according to CBS.
“When we went to leave the cops and security were downstairs and told us we can’t leave,” said one student, who was on lockdown in their building for over an hour.
“And they are still here telling us we can’t leave.”
The Capital Jewish Museum like many other Jewish institutions in the US has struggled with security issues amid rising antisemitism.
“Jewish institutions all around town, all around the country, are concerned about security due to some very scary incidents that some institutions have faced and because of a climate of antisemitism,” Executive Director Beatrice Gurwitz told NBC News in a separate news report before the attack on Wednesday.
The museum recently received a grant to upgrade its security in part, she said, because of a new exhibit on LGBT pride.
“We recognize that there are threats associated with this as well,” Gurwitz said. “And again, we want to ensure that our space is as welcoming and secure for everybody who comes here while we are exploring these stories.”

Poland intervenes as Russian ‘shadow fleet’ ship spotted near power cable
Poland intervenes as Russian ‘shadow fleet’ ship spotted near power cable
By Barbara Erling and Marek Strzelecki
WARSAW (Reuters) -Poland’s military intervened after a ship from the Russian “shadow fleet” was seen performing suspicious manoeuvres near a power cable connecting Poland with Sweden, Poland’s prime minister said on Wednesday.
NATO has stepped up security in the Baltic following a string of incidents in which power cables, telecom links and gas pipelines were damaged in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
“A Russian ship from the ‘shadow fleet’ covered by sanctions performed suspicious maneuvers near the power cable connecting Poland with Sweden,” Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote on X. “After the effective intervention of our military, the ship sailed to one of the Russian ports.”
“Shadow fleet” refers to vessels used by Russia to ship oil, arms and grains in violation of international sanctions imposed after the Ukraine invasion.
Speaking later to reporters, Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said a patrol flight scared the ship off and said the Polish Navy’s ORP Heweliusz was sailing to the scene.
Vice Admiral Krzysztof Jaworski, Poland’s maritime component commander, told Reuters that the tanker in question was called Sun and it sailed under the Antigua flag.
The Russian embassy in Warsaw declined to comment. In the past, Moscow has denied involvement in undersea sabotage in the Baltic, saying the West was using such claims to curb Russia’s sea-borne oil exports.
The 600-megawatt undersea cable links the Swedish coast near Karlshamn with Ustka in northern Poland and allows both grids to rely on cross-border supplies when electricity is cheaper in the other system.
A spokesperson for Polish grid operator PSE said the cable was working. PSE data showed over 600 megawatts were flowing to Sweden through the cable at 1130 GMT.
“This shows how dangerous the times we live in are, how serious the situation in the Baltic Sea is,” Kosiniak-Kamysz told a news conference.
“Since Sweden and Finland joined the North Atlantic Alliance, the Baltic Sea has become a key marine area, where the largest number of incidents occur, the most common incidents related to cable breaks… and sabotage.”
He vowed a “firm response” from Poland and NATO to any attack on Baltic Sea infrastructure.
Stockholm, asked about the incident, said Swedish authorities were ready to respond to developments in the vicinity.
“We are in contact with the authorities and our allies regarding developments affecting the security situation,” Swedish Defence Minister Pal Jonson said in an emailed comment.

Perth weather: City braces for coldest day of the year as endless summer finally comes to an end
Perth weather: City braces for coldest day of the year as endless summer finally comes to an end
Perth’s endless summer appears to be over as a spate of afternoon showers begins a cool change sweeping across the city and the the South West.
Saturday will spearhead what is the start of a noticeable drop in conditions, with early morning temperatures set to sink to 5C degrees.
The brisk start to the weekend will mark Perth’s coldest day of the year so far.
Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Jessica Langard said the chilly change will kick off on Thursday afternoon with the arrival of rain clouds.
“We do have an approaching cold front, quite a wintery cold front,” she told The West ***********, adding that after it will feel even cooler after it’s moved through.
“As we move into the afternoon and evening we’ll start to see those showers pushing up from the south.”
Mandurah will be first to see the rainfall, followed Perth and the northern suburbs.
The rain will continue into the night and throughout Saturday morning, slowly easing in the afternoon.
Ms Langard advised people to take an umbrella out, with showers expected to pick up again Saturday night.
Participants in the HBF Run For A Reason fun run should probably pack a waterproof layer, with up to 4mm of rain forecast for Sunday as well.
Participants might also need a warm layer, with a second cold front expected to move through on Sunday morning, spurring on those extra showers and a minimum of 9C degrees.
The balmy autumn weather Perth has been enjoying the past few weeks — with maximum temperatures often in the high 20s —appear to be running in short supply, with the mercury across the city not expected to surpass the low 20s next week.
“It’ll stay fairly cool through the start of the week,” Ms Langard said. “There is some dryer weather coming, and even though the sun will come back out, it’s not going to be as warm as it has been.”
“We’ve been in the mid 20s all this week and now it’ll be low 20s, and then another system will be coming through.
“So it’s definitely feeling like we won’t be bouncing back as high, and like we’ll sinking into those more wintery conditions now.”
The colder weather isn’t limited to Perth. On Saturday, the western Goldfields and the central Wheatbelt will see temperatures drop below 0C degrees.
West of Narrogin could fall to -2C, as could Collie.
York and Southern Cross are likely to dip to -1C.
While the arrival of rain is a welcome relief for farmers, Ms Langard warned that even though BoM was forecasting 1C and 2C in some of these regions, ground temperature in these areas could drop below 0C, spelling bad news for crops.
“There is a risk of frost for farmers this weekend,” she said.

Nike to hike prices as it faces tariffs uncertainty
Nike to hike prices as it faces tariffs uncertainty
Nike says it will raise the prices of some products from 1 June, with the increases hitting everything from shoes to clothing.
The sportswear giant says it is making the changes as part of “seasonal planning” and did not mention US President Donald Trump’s tariffs policies that have upended global trade.
The firm also says its will sell products directly to Amazon in the US for the first time since 2019.
Last month, rival firm Adidas warned that levies imposed by Trump will lead to higher prices in the US for popular trainers including the Gazelle and Samba.
From next Sunday, Nike shoes that cost more than $100 (£74.50) will see prices rise bay as much as $10.
Prices of clothing and equipment will also be raised by between $2 to $10.
The popular Air Force 1 trainers as well as shoes that cost less than $100 will be exempted from the price hikes. Children’s products and Jordan branded apparel and accessories will also be excluded.
Nike’s move was driven by a range of internal and external factors, the BBC understands.
“We regularly evaluate our business and make pricing adjustments as part of our seasonal planning,” a spokesperson said.
Companies around the world are contending with the uncertainty of Trump administration’s trade policies.
A slew of steep so-called “reciprocal tariffs” which were announced on 2 April were put on hold as countries from around the world negotiate with the White House. The 90-day pause is due to expire in early July.
On Wednesday, *** sportswear retailer JD Sports said higher prices in its key US market due to tariffs could hit customer demand.
Almost all Nike trainers are made in Asia – a region targeted by Trump’s tariffs salvo against foreign countries he accuses of “ripping off” Americans.
Goods from Vietnam, Indonesia and China faced some of the heaviest US import taxes – between 32% to 54%.
On Thursday, Nike also said it will once again sell its products directly Amazon in the US.
It had previously listed its goods on the platform, but stopped six years ago to focus on its official website and physical stores.
Nike relies heavily on the US for sales. The the world’s biggest economy accounts for almost everything it sells in its largest market of North America.
However, a slump in sales has curbed the company’s ability to command full price for its products.

Trump urged to make Elon Musk certify DOGE data restricted
Trump urged to make Elon Musk certify DOGE data restricted
Elon Musk listens as reporters ask U.S. President Donald Trump and South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa questions during a press availability in the Oval Office at the White House on May 21, 2025 in Washington, DC.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen urged President Donald Trump on Wednesday to require billionaire Elon Musk and special government employees of his DOGE project to certify before leaving government service that they cannot use for personal benefit any non-public government data they gained access to.
Shaheen, D-N.H., in a letter to Trump, noted that the Tesla CEO Musk and DOGE employees have “unprecedented” access to “vast swathes of some of the most sensitive U.S. government data” across a broad range of federal agencies.
DOGE, whose employees include veterans of Musk’s companies, has reportedly accessed data in the Social Security Administration, the Treasury Department, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and several others, the letter said.
Her letter was first reported by NBC News.
Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency has, at Trump’s behest, slashed or sought to eliminate federal agencies, their personnel and other resources.
The agencies targeted include ones that are tasked with regulatory oversight of Musk’s companies.
“I am very concerned that SGEs [special government employees], many of whom come from the tech field, may return to the private sector and use nonpublic information from the federal government to give their personal business activities an unfair and anticompetitive boost,” Shaheen wrote Trump.
U.S. Senator and Committee Ranking Member Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) is seen during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmation hearing on Capitol Hill on March 4, 2025.

The letter noted that Steve Bannon, the right-wing provocateur who served as a top White House advisor to Trump in his first stint in office, “shares my concern.”
“According to a recent report: ‘Bannon also said he wants a letter of certification showing that no one has taken any data from the Trump administration or government, to which Semafor’s editor-in-chief Ben Smith asked, “Sounds like you don’t trust [Musk] not to take data?” “Trust, but verify,” Bannon responded.’ ” Shaheen wrote.
A senior White House official called the senator’s letter “pointless.”
The official added in a statement to NBC that “SGEs are already required to abide by executive branch ethics rules including the rules relating to misuse of position or other government resources or information.”
Musk, who is the world’s wealthiest person, was Trump’s biggest financial backer in the 2024 elections.
He runs a portfolio of businesses that include electric vehicle maker Tesla, and the aerospace and defense contractor SpaceX, which includes Starlink, a satellite-based wireless internet service.
His newest venture, xAI, develops artificial intelligence models and products, such as the AI chatbot Grok, which require huge amounts of training data.
xAI recently merged with X, the social media company previously known as Twitter.
Musk’s 130-day term limit as a special government employee is rapidly approaching, as is that of some of his DOGE staffers.
While some DOGE staffers are poised to take longer-term government jobs, others may soon move to the private sector. That has raised questions about the protection of sensitive data and systems they accessed during their tenure at DOGE.
X is already in hot water with Canada’s privacy watchdog, which is investigating whether the company used personal data to train Grok without users’ consent.
Musk has claimed that DOGE saved money for the federal government.
But a New York Times analysis and others have found that DOGE and Musk have repeatedly overstated the impact of their work.
The Partnership of Public Service estimated that DOGE could cost taxpayers $135 billion this fiscal year, due in part to the cost of firing and putting workers on paid leave, and also because of the rehiring of terminated employees whose talents are still needed.
In an interview Tuesday with CNBC anchor David Faber, Musk said that DOGE will have reduced the federal government’s spending by $160 billion from 2025 to 2026, which he characterized as “16% of the way towards a trillion in five months.”
Musk and DOGE initially aimed to cut $2 trillion from the federal budget. But they later walked that goal back to $1 trillion.

WA State Labor MP Kyle McGinn wraps up his valedictory speech with shoey in Parliament
WA State Labor MP Kyle McGinn wraps up his valedictory speech with shoey in Parliament
WA Labor MP Kyle McGinn ended his final day in Parliament by doing a shoey.
McGinn, who served two terms as a member for Mining and Pastoral Region, wrapped up his valedictory speech with a very *********** send off when he removed his sneaker, poured beer into it and sculled it.
Before tactically pulling out a can of Margaret River’s CBCo Brewing draught, Mr McGinn thanked his constituents and declared that he was “used to getting told off.”
“I thought so long and hard about how I would finish this speech and my constituents in the Goldfields I think will be particularly appreciative,” he said.
“There’s only one way to do it and I’m used to getting told off, so we might as well get this over and done with, but, I would like to say to the members and constituents across WA, thank you for two fantastic terms, cheers.”

The theatrical act was received with shock as some members cringed while others laughed and even applauded him before Legislative Council President Alanna Clohesy ordered him to sit down.
In an interview with 6PR on Thursday morning, he told hosts Millsy and Karl that he performed the act to show there were normal people in Parliament and that he was celebrating in his own way.
“I think Parliament can often seem inaccessible, I know when I first went into Parliament I thought it was just about politicians but there are normal people up there,” he said.
“Sometimes you just celebrate your own way and that has been me the whole way through.”
Mr McGinn announced he would be retiring in September last year after he was unable to secure pre-selection on the Labor Party ticket in the Upper House and later missed out on the bid for Federal pre-selection for the new seat of Bullwinkel.

Kim Jong-un watches in horror as new warship is crushed in launch failure
Kim Jong-un watches in horror as new warship is crushed in launch failure
A major accident occurred during the launch ceremony of a new North Korean warship on Thursday, which Kim Jong-un denounced as a “criminal act”.
Kim, who witnessed the failed launch of the 5,000-ton destroyer, declared the incident a “criminal act caused by absolute carelessness” and warned it “could not be tolerated”.
The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said the accident at the eastern port of Chongjin was caused by a loss of balance while the vessel was being launched.
It left “some sections of the warship’s bottom crushed” and the bow was unable to exit the shipway, KCNA added.
South Korea’s military said the stricken warship was lying sideways in the water after the failed launch.
The report did not mention whether there were any casualties.
Kim said the accident “brought the dignity and self-respect of our state to a collapse” and vowed to hold officials accountable for the “irresponsible errors”.
The North Korean leader said they would be dealt with at the plenary meeting of the Party Central Committee to be convened next month. He ordered for repairs on the warship to be completed before June.
The rare public disclosure of the accident comes after Pyongyang unveiled another 5,000-ton destroyer-class vessel named Choe Hyon last month.
Kim and his daughter stand in the bow of the destroyer Choe Hyon last month – AFP
At the time, state media ran images of Kim attending a ceremony with his daughter Ju Ae, considered by many experts to be his likely successor.
North Korea claimed the vessel was equipped with the “most powerful weapons”, and that it would “enter into operation early next year”.
Some analysts said the ship could be equipped with short-range tactical nuclear missiles – although North Korea has not proven it has the ability to miniaturise its nukes.
In a report last week on preparations for the launch of the accident ship, US-based analysis website 38 North said it appeared the ship would be side-launched from the quay, a method not previously observed in North Korea.
“The use of this launch method could be one of necessity, as the quay where the ship is being built does not have an incline,” the 38 North report said.
Commercial satellite imagery of the shipyard the day before the launch showed the destroyer positioned on the quay with support vessels by its side.

Coalition break-up on hold after Liberal concessions
Coalition break-up on hold after Liberal concessions
David Littleproud has confirmed the Coalition’s shock split is on pause after last-minute talks with Sussan Ley.
The Nationals leader was set to unveil his shadow cabinet on Thursday but said he would told off after meeting with his Liberal Party counterpart.

“This morning, we brought together the shadow spokespeople of the National Party into the next parliament, and we had a very productive meeting about planning the way forward for the National Party in being another opposition party in this next parliament,” Mr Littleproud told reporters in Canberra.
“During that *******, I had a brief meeting with Sussan Ley and she made an offer to reconvene her party room to discuss the four policy areas that the National Party demand as part of a Coalition agreement.
“And I thank her for that, and as a consequence, I have decided to send those spokespeople home as a sign of good faith.
“And Sussan, as a sign of good faith, will not be announcing a shadow cabinet. This is a positive step forward.”

The four polices the Nationals would not budge on in Coalition negotiations included divestiture powers for supermarkets, nuclear power, its proposed regional Australia fund and greater telecommunications coverage.
Ms Ley has also confirmed ground had been made.
“Earlier today I wrote to, and met with, David inviting him to re-enter good-faith negotiations. I am pleased he has accepted,” she said in a statement.
“In relation to the policy positions proposed by the National Party Room, consistent with my consultation commitment, the Liberal Party will consider these, utilising our party room processes.
“It has always been the Liberal Party’s objective to form a Coalition and we welcome The Nationals’ decision to re-enter negotiations.”
Mr Ley also confirmed she would hold off announcing her shadow ministry.
More to come.
