  2. Jensen says we are ‘several years away’ from solving the AI hallucination problem — in the meantime, ‘we have to keep increasing our computation’ Jensen says we are ‘several years away’ from solving the AI hallucination problem — in the meantime, ‘we have to keep increasing our computation’ Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang recently said he doesn’t think the industry can solve the AI hallucination issue, wherein an AI makes up information to fill in its knowledge gaps, for several more years. Huang also outlined how he had wooed his wife by promising he would be a CEO by the age of 30. Huang discussed these and other topics, like how much computing needs increased in the past 10 years, during an interview at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The host said the demand for AI computing power jumps four times annually. “In 10 years, it’s [an] enormous number, actually a million.” He also added that’s why Nvidia’s stock went up 300x. “The computing needs are a million times more, so then it explains the stock probably is not that expensive.” He then asked Huang, “As you look into the future with your crystal ball, are we going to see that a million times more needs increase for the next 10 years?” Huang did not give a direct answer, but he first explained how artificial intelligence is being developed today. The first area is pre-training, which the Nvidia CEO compared to going to college. Here, the AI takes in all the data in the world and discovers knowledge through it. Huang says this is a “very important milestone, but it’s not enough.” The second area in the AI development process is post-training, where it dives deep into a particular skill via “reinforcement learning [through] human feedback, reinforcement learning [through] AI feedback, synthetic data generation, multipath learning, reinforcement learning [sic]—there’s a whole bunch of techniques.” Finally, the third area of AI development is Test Time Scaling, which he also referred to as “thinking.” This is much more complicated, as the AI now breaks the problem down step by step to find a solution. It might have to iterate and sometimes simulate various outcomes, especially if the answer is not predictive. He says, “We call that thinking, and the longer you think, maybe the higher quality the answer would become.” NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang On How He Wooed His Wife Saying He’ll Be CEO By 30, Leaves Students In Splits – YouTube Watch On But despite all these areas of development, Huang says that we still can’t fully trust the best answers that AI can deliver. “Today, the answers that we have are the best that we can, but we need to get to a point where the answer that you get is not the best that we can provide, and somewhat you still have to decide whether is this hallucinated or not hallucinated, does this make sense, is it sensible or not sensible? We have to get to a point where the answer that you get, you largely trust.” He also added, “I think that we’re several years away from being able to do that, and in the meantime, we have to keep increasing our computation.” Despite this, he also pointed out what Nvidia has done for AI, “What Nvidia has contributed is that we’ve taken the marginal cost of computing and reduced it by a million times.” He said, “When the cost of something reduces by a million times, your habits fundamentally change…that is the single greatest contribution Nvidia ever made, that we made it so that using a machine to learn exhaustively an enormous amount of data is something that researchers wouldn’t even think twice to do. That’s why machine learning has taken off.” When someone pointed out that Nvidia’s AI GPUs are still expensive, Huang said that it’d be a million times more expensive if Nvidia didn’t exist. “I gave you a million times discount in the last 10 years. It’s practically free!” said Jensen. Get Tom’s Hardware’s best news and in-depth reviews, straight to your inbox. Jensen Huang promised his wife he’ll be CEO by 30 One other interesting tidbit that came up during the interview was when they asked Huang for advice on “when and why they should start their own thing [company].” The interviewer added, “Besides, you did promise your wife Lori that by the age of 30, you will do a company,” and Huang responded, “That was my pickup line; I didn’t mean it.” Jensen was 17 when he met his wife, Lori, who was 19 then. He was the youngest **** in his class, and there were only three women among the students. Huang said, “You have to learn how to have a good pickup line.” So, Jensen approached her and asked, “Do you want to see my homework?” She eventually agreed since he promised that if she did homework with him every Sunday, she’d get straight As—resulting in a weekly Sunday date for Huang. “Just to make sure that eventually she marries me, I told her that by the time I’m 30, I just wanted you [to] know I’m only 20 right now. But by the time I’m 30, I’m going to be a CEO—I have no idea what I was talking about—and then we got married.” Jensen said. “That’s all the advice I’m going to give all the entrepreneurs. That’s it.” Source link #Jensen #years #solving #hallucination #problem #increasing #computation Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  3. Top Wall Street analysts are bullish on these dividend stocks Top Wall Street analysts are bullish on these dividend stocks An Exxon Mobil gas station in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 28, 2023. Al Drago | Bloomberg | Getty Images With the Federal Reserve now on a rate-cutting campaign, dividend stocks may soon get their moment in the spotlight. Investors looking for lucrative dividend-paying stocks can track the recommendations of top analysts, who consider various aspects like a company’s fundamentals and consistency in dividend payments before selecting a stock. Here are three dividend-paying stocks, highlighted by Wall Street’s top ***** on TipRanks, a platform that ranks analysts based on their past performance. Exxon Mobil This week’s first dividend pick is oil and gas giant Exxon Mobil (XOM). The company recently announced better-than-anticipated third-quarter results, driven by a solid rise in production. It is worth noting that the company achieved its highest liquids production in over 40 years with 3.2 million barrels per day. The dividend aristocrat returned $9.8 billion to shareholders in the third quarter. Moreover, the company increased its quarterly dividend by 4% to 99 cents per share. With this hike, Exxon has increased its dividends for 42 consecutive years. XOM stock offers a forward dividend yield of 3.3%. Following the Q3 print, Evercore analyst Stephen Richardson reiterated a buy rating on Exxon stock with a price target of $135. The analyst noted that the company’s strategy to invest through the cycle trough and boost spending on major projects and acquisitions like that of Pioneer Natural Resources boosted the prospects of its Upstream business. “The benefit of incremental investments and perhaps more importantly the high grading of the asset base has put XOM on a different competitive footing vs. the industry but also vs. its own historical results,” said Richardson. The analyst noted that the company’s cash flow from operations, excluding working capital changes, of $15.2 billion was flat on a quarter-over-quarter basis but exceeded his expectations by nearly $1.1 billion. He also highlighted that Exxon’s net debt declined by $1.1 billion in the quarter, reflecting $2.3 billion of net working capital inflow. Richardson ranks No. 924 among more than 9,100 analysts tracked by TipRanks. His ratings have been profitable 61% of the time, delivering an average return of 9.6%. See Exxon Ownership Structure on TipRanks. Coterra Energy We move to another energy player, Coterra Energy (CTRA). It is an exploration and production company with operations focused in the Permian Basin, Marcellus Shale and Anadarko Basin. In the third quarter, shareholder returns represented 96% of the company’s free cash flow (FCF) and included a quarterly base dividend of 21 cents per share and share repurchases worth $111 million. Coterra Energy aims to return 50% or greater of its annual FCF to shareholders and recently highlighted that it has returned 100% year to date. CTRA stock offers a dividend yield of 3%. On Nov. 13, Coterra announced two separate definitive agreements to acquire certain assets of Franklin Mountain Energy and Avant Natural Resources and its affiliates for a total amount of $3.95 billion. The company thinks that the acquisition of these two Permian Basin asset packages will expand its core area in New Mexico and boost its organizational strengths. Reacting to the news, Mizuho analyst Nitin Kumar reaffirmed a buy rating on the stock with a price target of $37 and a “Top Pick” designation. He said that while the assets being acquired are less attractive than Coterra’s existing Permian inventory on the basis of pure well productivity, their higher oil mix and lower well costs offset this shortcoming. While Kumar thinks that these acquisitions are not transformative, he ******** bullish on CTRA’s long-term prospects and thinks that “as the lowest-cost producer of gas, CTRA should be able to support above-peer cash generation even at lower prices or wide differentials, which complement oil-driven FCF from the Permian.” Kumar ranks No. 187 among more than 9,100 analysts tracked by TipRanks. His ratings have been profitable 64% of the time, delivering an average return of 14.3%. See Coterra Energy Stock Charts on TipRanks. Walmart Finally, let’s look at Walmart (WMT). The big-box retailer delivered impressive third-quarter results and raised its full-year guidance, thanks to the strength in its e-commerce business and improvement in categories beyond groceries. Earlier this year, Walmart raised its annual dividend per share by about 9% to 83 cents per share, marking the 51st consecutive year of dividend increases. Following the results, Jefferies analyst Corey Tarlowe increased the price target for WMT stock to $105 from $100 and reaffirmed a buy rating. The analyst noted that the company’s same-store sales continued to be fueled by increased transactions, higher unit volumes and favorable general merchandise trends. Tarlowe highlighted that improvement in Walmart’s margins helped deliver better-than-expected earnings in the quarter. Specifically, WMT’s Q3 ****** margin improved by about 20 basis points due to several reasons like increased e-commerce profitability, inventory management and a favorable business mix. Further, the operating margin expanded by 10 basis points, thanks to drivers like increased ****** margin and higher membership income. The analyst also noted the improvement in general merchandise sales in Walmart U.S., supported by factors such as enhanced assortment and share gains across all income cohorts. Overall, Tarlowe is bullish on the stock and ******** “incrementally encouraged by WMT’s ability to offer customers improved value, witness robust growth, and gain share ahead.” Tarlowe ranks No. 331 among more than 9,100 analysts tracked by TipRanks. His ratings have been profitable 67% of the time, delivering an average return of 17.6%. See Walmart Hedge Fund Activity on TipRanks. 4. Government announces two shipbuilders in running to build WA frigates Government announces two shipbuilders in running to build WA frigates Defence has narrowed down the options for the new general purpose frigates that will be built at Henderson to either a ********* or ******* design. Depending on which is chosen, the first three will be built overseas by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries or Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, while the Henderson precinct is overhauled to allow the rest to be constructed locally. The Government announced on Monday it had whittled its shortlist down from four options to these two shipbuilders in a highly competitive tender process. Mitsubishi is offering one design and Thyssenkrupp has two. The ********* Mogami design is 133 metres long while the ******* MEKO-A200 is 121 metres. Both options would carry maritime and land strike missiles, submarine detection technology, air and self-defence systems and be able to operate MH-60R marine combat helicopters. Camera IconDeputy Prime Minister Richard Marles along with WA Premier Roger Cook. Credit: Justin Benson-Cooper/The West *********** Defence Minister Richard Marles thanked Germany, Japan, South Korea and Spain for their efforts in supporting the bid process, saying Australia saw their commitment as a reflecting of the strong relationships with those countries. “We acknowledge the extraordinary achievement of each of these companies in manufacturing platforms recognised by the independent analysis team as the best of their kind,” he said. The acquisition of new general purpose frigates – smaller than the Hunter and Hobart class ships – is part of a plan to more than double the size of the Navy’s fleet, drawing on the Defence strategic review and surface fleet review. The work building them is expected to cost at least $11 billion and support thousands of skilled jobs in WA. Defence Industry Minister Pat Conroy said the program was moving at pace to make sure the Navy got the ships it needed. The first of the new frigates is expected to be delivered in 2029. “The rapid, accelerated work of the general purpose frigate program to date underpins the next stages of the acquisition to ensure this capability is delivered this decade, providing our Navy with enhanced anti-submarine and anti-air warfare capabilities,” Mr Conroy said. 7. Buffett’s new pizza investment a perfect fit in Berkshire’s portfolio Buffett’s new pizza investment a perfect fit in Berkshire’s portfolio Warren Buffett, a celebrated lover of junk food, just bought into a national pizza chain whose shares are trading near their cheapest level of the year. With CEO Buffett at the helm, Berkshire Hathaway bought more than 1.2 million shares of Domino’s Pizza last quarter, a stake worth about $550 million, a recent regulatory filing showed. Given its small size in Berkshire’s massive portfolio — cash holdings alone top $300 billion — Buffett’s investing lieutenants Ted Weschler and Todd Combs may be behind the investment. Whosever original idea, Domino’s Pizza is in keeping with other, long-standing investments by the sprawling Omaha-based conglomerate. Berkshire already owns 100% of See’s Candies and Dairy Queen , and counts Coca-Cola and Oscar Meyer hot dog-parent Kraft Heinz among its top equity holdings. Buffett, a 94-year-old billionaire known for childlike dietary habits, has famously said he would happily drink five cans of Coke and eat McDonald’s every day. Yet, despite the seemingly indulgent diet, Buffett ******** in good health. “I eat like a 6-year-old,” the Berkshire CEO once said. “I’m one quarter Coca-Cola,” Buffett once famously quipped. In 2014, Berkshire invested $3 billion in shares of Restaurant Brands International , owner of Burger King and Tim Hortons amd in the 1990s owned a large position in McDonald’s in the 1990s. DPZ YTD mountain Domino’s Pizza shares have trailed the S & P 500 this year. Value bet Domino’s fits into Berkshire’s value investment philosophy, focused on cash flow and price-to-earnings and price-to-book-value yardsticks. At the same time, Berkshire may have simply taken advantage of a steep sell-off in Domino’s July, when it slumped 17%. On one day alone, shares in the world’s largest pizza chain plunged more than 13%, its worst decline since 2008, after telling investors that sales would miss an original forecast and fewer new stores would open overseas than originally planned. As a result, Domino’s price-to-earnings ratio fell to 23.7, the lowest this year, according to FactSet data. Pizza wars The pizza chain has struggled with comparable sales growth in the U.S. as competition for cost-conscious customers mounts. “Near-term fundamentals remain under pressure,” said Jeffrey Bernstein, a Barclays Capital analyst. “Similar to the ‘burger wars’ of years past, management believes we are now in the midst of ‘pizza wars’, with all focused on incremental value.” Even after Berkshire’s disclosure boosted Domino’s stock, it’s still up just about 10% this year, far behind the S & P 500’s 25% return. The Barclays analyst, who recently met with Domino’s management, said Berkshire’s newly-disclosed stake was mentioned in the meeting but that the company didn’t have much to add. “We don’t believe they spoke with Warren,” Bernstein told CNBC, referring to Domino’s management, but executives probably “received questions from the conglomerate ahead of the stake being announced.” Source link #Buffetts #pizza #investment #perfect #fit #Berkshires #portfolio Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  9. How fund managers at Fidelity International see China’s stimulus plans How fund managers at Fidelity International see China’s stimulus plans For two fund managers at Fidelity International, Beijing’s latest stimulus announcements were significant enough for them to buy more beaten-down real estate stocks. ******** authorities have released a series of incremental measures since late September that range from cutting interest rates to extending financial support for finishing construction on apartments that have already been sold. “This round of the policy pivot is quite significant in the sense that it is a well-coordinated [number of] supporting measures issued by different levels of government bodies,” Theresa Zhou, a fund manager at Fidelity International, told CNBC in an interview Wednesday. “We have been moderately increasing our position in China,” Zhou said. After the September policy announcements, she said the firm turned more positive on “certain cyclical names” in China real estate, after previously focusing on online platforms in the sector. If household confidence returns, that can pave the way for real estate prices to stabilize, especially in China’s larger cities, she said. As of late 2023 and early this year, Zhou said she had been concerned about the housing downcycle given relatively high inventories and falling home prices. Zhou and Ben Li are co-managers of Fidelity’s Greater China Fund . The firm does not disclose exact stock transactions. “We have been selectively increasing positions in quality companies in say the consumer and property sectors,” Li said. “In terms of consumer and property sector, we think they were hurt by the macro challenges in the last few years [and with the policy turning, some] may start to see incremental improvements.” “We think experienced-based consumption will continue to do well,” he said, noting the firm’s investment in online travel agencies. One of the top 10 holdings of Fidelity’s Greater China Fund is ******** online booking platform Trip.com . In McKinsey senior partner Daniel Zipser’s latest assessment of ******** consumer sentiment , he pointed out that property transactions in October and the first half of November rose by 2%, the first increase this year. That’s according to the firm’s analysis of daily transaction data for 30 cities. “It is fair to say that October has seen an uptick in consumption, creating positive momentum,” Zipser said. While China has not handed out cash to the public, authorities have used targeted trade-in subsidies to spur purchases of home appliances and other big-ticket items. Companies, such as Alibaba , have noted a boost in sales. Those trade-in measures helped increase panel TV sales in China since the third quarter, Nomura analysts said in a Nov. 20 note. They estimate that, in a sign of growing demand, utilization of TV production lines at BOE and TCL Technology will likely increase in November from October. Nomura rates the two ******** electronics companies, both listed in Shenzhen, as buy. The two Fidelity fund managers emphasized that their strategy focuses on selecting companies based on their individual competitive advantage. They added that it will take time to see the impact of stimulus, and said that they are watching upcoming government meetings in December and March for more policy details. China’s top leaders typically gather in mid-December to discuss economic plans for the year ahead. Those measures and growth targets are then announced at a meeting of parliament in March. “The positive change from that stimulus package is removing the tail risk and putting a floor [under] the market,” Zhou said, noting she is “cautiously optimistic.” Earnings comments in the last two weeks from major ******** companies have underscored how it will take time to see the impact of stimulus . “When we talk to companies on the ground after the earnings, it’s positive that we do sense some improvement in their tone in terms of the enterprise confidence and also their expectation for the next year,” Zhou said. In terms of geopolitical risk, she pointed out that ******** companies have built out their overseas supply chain, making them better prepared today than they were several years ago for President-elect Donald Trump’s threat of tariffs. As a temporary workaround, the firm has halted updates to its feature-packed 24H2 version – for devices with these titles installed. While Ubisoft has released a mitigation for this bug, both Microsoft and Ubisoft warn of performance regressions. As of now, there is no expected release date for a potential fix but the developers are actively working to resolve this problem. The Windows 11 24H2 update has been a mixed bag – offering great performance bumps on one side and resulting in compatibility wrecks like this in addition to a previous incident involving looping BSODs on SSDs from Western Digital on the other. The easiest way to get yourself a copy of the 24H2 version – with all the bells and whistles of AI – is by using the Windows Installation Media. However, Microsoft says you shouldn’t, as a handful of Ubisoft games might become unplayable – if you update. After installing Windows 11, version 24H2, you might encounter issues with some Ubisoft games. To safeguard your Windows update experience, we have applied a compatibility hold on devices with these games installed. Devices having these games installed will not be offered the 24H2 update through the Windows Update channel. Microsoft is actively working with Ubisoft to find a solution and recommends against installing the 24H2 update manually in the meantime. Unsuspecting users who’ve already switched to the latest build may use a stopgap hotfix from Ubisoft but that comes at the cost of valuable FPS. Microsoft suggests using Task Manager and ******** the respective process if a game hangs or freezes. From what we can see, users have been facing these crashes since at least early last month. The most widely recommended solution has been to revert to the 23H2 version. 12. Beware these stocks that get the most revenue from the government Beware these stocks that get the most revenue from the government Investors should be wary of the impacts several companies may bear from the cost-cutting goals of President-elect Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, according to TD Cowen. “The announcement of DOGE has led to concerns about future revenue and profitability of USG [******* States government] contractors,” analyst Roman Schweizer said in a Friday note to clients. “It is too early to estimate potential negative impacts to USG contractors given the limited results of prior USG reforms, but cuts are possible and there will be uncertainty for several months.” Adding to the uncertainty behind DOGE’s ambitions was Elon Musk’s and Vivek Ramaswamy’s Wednesday op-ed in the Wall Street Journal that detailed the DOGE co-leaders’ ambitions for the program, which TD Cowen said falls into three major kinds of reform: regulatory rescissions, administrative reductions and cost savings. Among several claims, Musk, CEO of Tesla and a close aid of Trump, and Ramaswamy wrote that DOGE will “help end federal overspending” by targeting the more than $500 billion in annual federal expenditures that the duo said are unauthorized by Congress or being used in ways that Congress never intended. In an effort to find companies that have the most at stake under potential DOGE actions, TD Cowen identified the publicly traded government contractors with the highest amount of dollars obligated in fiscal year 2023, both overall and by individual federal department. Take a look at the names below: The top defense contractors for the U.S. government — including Northrop Grumman , Lockheed Martin , General Dynamics , RTX and Boeing — are among the major beneficiaries of fiscal spending in departments such as NASA, the Department of Defense and Department of State. Defense, aviation and IT company Leidos Holdings is another company that receives huge amounts of funding in departments such as housing and urban, homeland security, transportation and justice, the firm found. Shares of these defense companies have been slammed over the past month, partly due to concerns that defense stocks are hovering near extremely high valuations and a federal cost-cutting effort could add another ***** to the group, given that the DoD receives a large portion of total U.S. government spending. Pharmaceutical giants such as Merck , Humana and Pfizer could also be impacted by potential DOGE cuts, as the firm found they receive large sums of money primarily through contracts with the Department of Health & Human Services. To be sure, Schweizer said the consequences for these companies may also be lesser than anticipated given that Congress plays a role in regulation and reducing government employee headcount could lead to more outsourcing, among other factors. This luxury EV brand is gaining serious traction — here’s how it could transform the global auto market This luxury EV brand is gaining serious traction — here’s how it could transform the global auto market A luxury electric vehicle brand is quietly making an impact in Europe while more people are opting for EVs over gas-powered cars. According to Electrek, Lucid Motors is picking up speed in Europe’s largest auto market, Germany. The car company saw record EV registrations two months in a row. It has had 256 registrations in 2024 so far, with 41 in September and 129 in October. Lucid’s momentum comes even though Germany’s EV registrations are down 5% year-over-year. The luxury EV company has recently opened two new studios, one in Hamburg and the other in Frankfurt, bringing its total to four in Germany. It has eight in Europe. Lucid sells three EVs in Germany: the Air Pure, starting at $93,000 with up to 464 miles of range; the Air Touring, starting at $108,200 with up to 451 miles of range; and the Air Grand Touring, starting at $141,000 with up to 521 miles of range. While these prices are high, Lucid Motors is a luxury car brand similar to Mercedes or BMW, and switching to an EV can save you money in the long run. Watch now: Climate expert explains why there’s ‘no question’ human activity causes global temperature changes According to the Natural Resources Defense Council, a 2020 Consumer Reports study found car owners can save 60% a year powering an electric car compared to a gas car. The NRDC also noted that “electric vehicles typically cost half as much to maintain and repair as gas-powered cars.” Driving an EV can also cut down on polluting gases. Studies, including one in the San Francisco Bay Area, where EVs are popular, have proved this. University of California, Berkeley chemistry professor Ronald Cohen collected data from 57 sensors from 2018 to 2022 and found a 1.8% reduction per year in polluting gases. The money savings and environmental benefits are why people switch to electric vehicles. In the ******* States, if you make your next car an EV, you are eligible for a $7,500 tax credit. 14. Passwords are giving way to better security methods – until those are hacked too, that is | US small business Passwords are giving way to better security methods – until those are hacked too, that is | US small business We humans are simply too ***** to use passwords. A recent study from password manager NordPass found that “secret” was the most commonly used password in 2024. That was followed by “123456” and “password”. So let’s all give praise that the password is dying. Yes, we know that we should be using 20-letter passwords with weird symbols and numbers, but our minds can’t cope. We use the same password for many accounts, be it for a newsletter subscription or our life savings. We all have too many passwords. So we opt for the easiest to remember – and steal. Hackers know this and our passwords are available from the countless data breaches that occur on an almost daily basis on the dark web to anyone with a few bucks. Now Mastercard, Visa and a whole host of other tech and finance firms are ******** off passwords. Mastercard is aiming to end passwords and all that keying in of card details by 2030. Instead, biometric methods such as fingerprints or facial recognition will be used to see if it’s the real you. Microsoft, Apple, Google, Samsung and other big tech companies are moving towards what they call “passkeys”. Under this security method, your pin is saved both on the cloud provider’s site and on your device so that when you try to enter the site instead of – or in addition to – using a password, you use the pin that’s authenticated in both places, and as long as you’re on the same device you’re allowed access. Until, of course, you lose that device or it gets stolen and the pin is hacked. Or a hacker uses a deepfake imitation of your voice to dupe an unsuspecting customer service rep with your stolen information. Or a hacker uses open-source software to hoax users into revealing their pin as they try to log in to a site. It happens. More than you would like to know. Or your biometric information is stolen through malware and then – using advanced AI with high-resolution photos or 3D imaging – replicated. This already happens. Are rewards of technology greater than the risks of a data breach? For most small-business owners, the answer is yes Spoiler alert: even in a post-password universe, your company’s data and your personal data are not safe. Tech companies will keep coming up with new ways to secure it, and hackers will find their way around. It’s a war that will never end, supported by a multibillion-dollar industry that makes security tools and whose executives secretly salivate every time there’s a new flaw because … hey, better not cancel that subscription, or else! It is depressing but it is not a reason to give up. As a business owner, you have a fiduciary responsibility over your cash and your company’s data. So you must keep fighting. You make sure your employees are trained to notice potential scams (that’s the No 1 cause of breaches). You pay an IT company to load the latest (and – another spoiler alert – immediately out-of-date) security software on all your company devices. You keep all your operating systems – Windows, iOS, etc – updated. You get cyber-insurance. You back up your data. You do all these things because you’re supposed to. It will never guarantee the security of your data. But it will help minimize your risk. And it is all about risk. Life is about risk. You take risks when you cross a street, get on a plane, eat at a restaurant. You do this because there are rewards. At work, you risk data breaches because technology helps you do things faster, keep your overhead low, grow sales, make you and your people more productive. You enjoy the rewards of delivery services, mobile payment apps, social media and online ********. Are these rewards greater than the risks of a data breach? For most, the answer is yes. It’s a choice. We know the costs. And we don’t do enough to protect ourselves. We all choose to take that risk. 15. ‘I have same condition as Tulisa on I’m A Celeb ‘I have same condition as Tulisa on I’m A Celeb Amy Green Amy Green, from Leeds, has suffered from Bell’s palsy since it first struck seven years ago When Amy Green first saw Tulisa Contostavlos on I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, she said it was “like looking at a mirror image” of herself. Though the two women look different, they have both suffered from Bell’s palsy, a condition affecting about 100,000 people in the ***. Amy quickly recognised how Bell’s palsy had affected Tulisa’s face, saying “there’s volume that lacks in her face, which is very similar to mine”. Amy, 42, said she welcomed the star’s appearances on prime-time TV as it would help raise awareness. “You can’t get a ******* platform than I’m a Celebrity to talk about things, so it’s wonderful she’s in there,” she said. Tulisa, 36, first spoke about having Bell’s palsy on Olivia Atwood’s So Wrong It’s Right podcast, during which she said her initial ******* had happened when she was 24. She explained she was given steroid injections and left with swelling before her face dropped and remained drooped for seven months, during which time she said she hid in her house. She added she had since undergone a series of surgeries to balance her face. However, appearing on the current series of I’m a Celebrity, Tulisa has received criticism about her appearance from some viewers, prompting broadcaster Rylan Clark to urge people on X not to “make jokes about her”. ITV Reality TV star Tulisa first experienced Bell’s palsy 12 years ago For Amy, from Leeds, the condition hit seven years ago after a stressful ******* at work. “I was exceptionally busy. I was doing 60-plus hours a week and I had a second job. Something had to give – and it was me,” she explained. She said she first noticed something was wrong while at the hairdresser one day. “I remember looking at myself in the mirror and thinking I didn’t feel like I was there. I’d felt a little unwell in the run-up to it. I’d had like headaches and pain. “I’d gone to bed on the Sunday night thinking I just needed some rest. Then I woke up with a really droopy face and my eyes sort of wide open. “It got progressively worse throughout the day, so my face dropped a lot more. My speech started to be slurred.” Amy said her doctor soon diagnosed her with Bell’s palsy. It took her more than 18 months to recover, and she said that even seven years later there were still areas of her face she cannot move. “I think I was one of the unlucky ones. It doesn’t always take as long to recover for many people,” she said. “Sometimes I could go to bed and it looked one way, and then I’d wake up and it looked a completely different way the next day.” Amy Green Amy says her parents has been very supportive throughout her experience According to the NHS, Bell’s palsy is a condition causing temporary weakness or paralysis of the muscles in one side of the face, with symptoms varying from person to person. The weakness on one side of the face can be described as either a partial palsy, a mild muscle weakness, or a complete palsy, which is no movement at all. It can also affect the eyelid and mouth, making it difficult to close and open them. Amy said that while she understands why Tulisa chose to undergo several bouts of surgery to deal with the effects of Bell’s palsy, she had decided against them. “I was offered Botox, but I decided not to take it because I don’t think it’s the right thing. “You’re trying to match your other side all the time and I can’t tell you what this side of my face is going to do in two hours, let alone in two days. “So, I chose physical therapy to try and loosen up this side of my face and try to encourage it to come back with stretches.” Amy said the experience of having Bell’s palsy had changed her life in many ways: she cannot drink unless it is through a straw; she has to be more careful about getting rest; and she said eating fast food can be a challenge. “One time I was trying to go to McDonald’s with nieces and nephews,” she said. “I tried to eat something there and I had to bring my own cutlery so I could kind of cut it up and, like, eat a burger. “But food was never going to stop me. I’m far too much of a foodie.” ‘Stronger person’ Amy said she was lucky to have a big support network, but colleagues and strangers have not always been so kind and, like Tulisa, she has also experienced negative feedback after going on TV. “I appeared on TV during the election a couple of years ago. Every single time I go on TV, you can guarantee somebody says something about my face,” she said. “And I just think sometimes it’s quite cruel, isn’t it, that people think they can have that conversation?” However, Amy said she thinks having Bell’s palsy had made her a stronger person. “I think it’s made me more empathetic. It’s opened up my eyes, pun intended, to understand disabilities for other people.” Amy said when “everything kind of fell apart”, she had decisions to make – and she concluded: “I can help and I make that a bit better for others.” “You know, I’ll wallow for a while and then pull my big girl socks up and get on with it,” she explained. “So, yeah, it’s been tough, but it certainly could have been worse.” Meanwhile, Amy said she can only praise Tulisa for going on I’m a Celebrity and raising awareness about a condition which affects so many people. “It’s kind of really nice to have that,” she said. “I think it’s just good they give a platform to things like that. I wish her all the best.” Listen to highlights from West Yorkshire on BBC Sounds, catch up with the latest episode of Look North or tell us a story you think we should be covering here. 20. ‘He could have been saved’ ‘He could have been saved’ Shocking new footage seemingly capturing Liam Payne’s final moments shows the listless One Direction singer being hauled through the lobby of his Argentinian hotel — an image that left grieving girlfriend Kate Cassidy sobbing about the missed opportunity to avert his tragic ******. “Whenever it seems it can’t get more painful for Kate, it gets even more painful,” a close pal of the 25-year-old influencer told The Post. “He could have been saved, he could have been helped. It’s devastating — and infuriating.” Liam Payne was apparently hauled through the lobby of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires and dumped back in his hotel room alone minutes before his tragic ******. The wrenching CCTV footage recorded inside the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires shows three men carrying a seemingly unconscious Payne by his arms and legs out of the main lobby of the building. The footage was timestamped at 4:54 p.m. on Oct. 16 — exactly 13 minutes before Payne plummeted to his ******. The Post could not independently verify the timestamp’s accuracy, but a Daily Mail report noted that the timestamp conflicted with a different CCTV image taken outside Payne’s room timestamped seconds before the lobby image. The 31-year-old singer was acting erratically in the lobby for about an hour before he became incapacitated, with one witness claiming Payne was “convulsing” on the floor, according to the outlet, which obtained a still photo from the surveillance video. Payne stayed in Argentina for two weeks before plunging to his ******. Somehow, Payne ended up back in his hotel room alone at 5:17 p.m. Minutes later, the “For You” singer was ***** from multiple blunt force trauma after falling from his balcony. The new footage has been devastating to Cassidy, who began dating Payne in 2022 and believes it suggests there was time to intervene in the crooner’s tragic ******. She had left Argentina two days before his fatal fall. The CCTV footage is among the trove of more than 800 hours of video both in and near the hotel that investigators are analyzing are part of Payne’s ****** probe. Girlfriend Kate Cassidy said the video proves Payne “could have been saved,” a close friend revealed. They believe that the singer partied with two prostitutes and went on a *****-fueled bender that culminated in the fatal fall. The prostitutes left the hotel after a dispute over payment, authorities say. Local police are investigating three people in connection to the singer’s ******, including his close friend, Rogelio “Roger” Nores. Payne may have been unconscious when he plummeted to his ******. . They have also named former hotel employee Braian Nahuel Paiz, who they say furnished him with drugs. The 24-year-old admitted to having two hotel meetings with the “Story of My Life” singer, but insisted that he did not sell him any drugs and just had an “intimate” time with him. Young people who refuse to work to lose benefits, says minister Young people who refuse to work to lose benefits, says minister ‘Youth guarantee’ to focus on ‘earning or learning’ Young people who refuse to work will face having their benefits cut, the work and pensions secretary has said. Liz Kendall told the BBC the government will offer young people the opportunity to “earn or learn” under new proposals to be unveiled on Tuesday. “In return for those new opportunities young people will have a responsibility to take them up,” she said. Official figures published earlier this week showed that nearly a million young people were out of education, employment or training between July and September. Under new measures to reform the ******** system, a “Youth Guarantee” for 18 to 21-year-olds aims to train young people or get them back into work. Kendall told Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg these proposals would see an overhaul of the apprenticeship system so “more people have the chance to train” with young people offered “the opportunity to be earning or learning”. Asked if those who did not take up these offers would lose benefits, Kendall replied: “Yes.” She said this would transform opportunities for young people. “If you are out of work when you’re young that can have lifelong consequences in terms of your future job prospects and earning potential.” PA Media In an op-ed in the Mail on Sunday, Prime Minister Keir Starmer promised that the benefits overhaul would ****** down on “**********” who “game the system”. Kendall told the BBC that she believed there were people who can work but refused to do so, but said she thought these people were “in the *********” of benefit claimants. Economic inactivity has grown rapidly since the pandemic. There are now 9.3 million people who are neither in work nor looking for a job – a rise of 713,000 since Covid. Nearly three million people are out of work due to ill health, a 500,000 increase since 2019. Asked about the rise in benefit claimants in recent years, Kendall said some people have “self-diagnosed” mental health problems, as well as those “diagnosed by doctors” – but added that there was a “genuine problem” with mental health in the ***. PA Media Kevin Hollinrake said there were “incentives in the system” for people to leave work and claim benefits Under the previous ************* government’s plans to tighten eligibility for incapacity benefits, an estimated 400,000 people signed off work long-term would have lost payments. The work and pensions secretary refused to confirm whether those people would keep their benefits under Labour’s proposals. “We will deliver those savings, we will bring forward our own reforms,” she said. Shadow housing secretary Kevin Hollinrake said that rising numbers of people out of work due to ill health was “a phenomenon caused largely by the pandemic”. He said the previous government had been “dealing with it” and welcomed Labour’s focus on the issue, but added: “I want to make sure they do the right things rather than just talk a good game.” Source link #Young #people #refuse #work #lose #benefits #minister Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
