Ferguson takes charge of Soudal Open with brilliant 64 Ferguson takes charge of Soudal Open with brilliant 64 Scotland’s Ewen Ferguson shot a stunning second-round 64 to move into a three-shot halfway lead at the Soudal Open in Antwerp. The 28-year-old Scot carded seven birdies at Rinkven International GC as he completed a second successive bogey-free round for an 11-under-par total. It carried him three shots clear of England’s Marco Penge, with Dutch pair Joost Luiten and Darius Van Driel, American Troy Merritt and English trio John Parry, Brandon Robinson Thompson and Andrew Wilson sharing third on seven under. Ferguson said: “I quite enjoy when a par is a good score. I find it tough sometimes when you just need to make birdies and there’s a lot of pressure on to make birdies. “So when it’s quite tough like that to grind out pars, I feel comfortable with that because that’s how I was brought up playing and in Scotland par is a brilliant score.” Jason Scrivener, the lone *********** at the Belgian tournament, was six shots behind the leader in a share of ninth place, after a second-round 68. China criticizes US ban on Harvard’s international students China criticizes US ban on Harvard’s international students BANGKOK (AP) — The ******** government said Friday that the Trump administration’s move to ban international students from Harvard would harm America’s international standing, as anxious students and parents overseas fretted over what would come next. Among the two largest parts of the international student community in Harvard are ******** and Indian students. The university enrolled 6,703 international students across all of its schools in 2024, according to the school’s data, with 1,203 of those from China and 788 from India. The Trump administration’s move, announced Thursday, was a hot topic on ******** social media. State broadcaster CCTV questioned whether the U.S. would remain a top destination for foreign students, noting Harvard was already suing the U.S. government in court. “But with the long litigation *******, thousands of international students may have trouble waiting,” the CCTV commentary said. It went on to say that it becomes necessary for international students to consider other options “when policy uncertainty becomes the norm.” Educational cooperation with the U.S. is mutually beneficial and China opposes its politicization, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a daily briefing in Beijing. “The relevant actions by the U.S. side will only damage its own image and international credibility,” she said. She added that China would firmly protect the rights and interests of ******** students and scholars abroad but she didn’t offer any details on how it would do so in this situation. Indian authorities say they currently assessing the impact of the U.S. order on Indian students who are already enrolled with Harvard, as well as those aspiring to study there in future, but have not issued any statements of criticism. ******** students in U.S. previous point of tension The issue of ******** students studying overseas has long been a point of tension in the relationship with the United States. During Trump’s first term, China’s Ministry of Education warned students about rising rejections rates and shorter terms for visas in the U.S. Last year, the ******** foreign ministry protested that a number of ******** students had been interrogated and sent home upon arrival at U.S. airports. ******** state media has long played up gun violence in the U.S. and portrayed America as a dangerous place. Some ******** students are opting to study in the U.K. or other countries rather than the U.S. Meanwhile, two universities in Hong Kong extended invites to affected students. The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology said it would welcome international students already at Harvard and those who have been admitted in a statement Friday. City University in Hong Kong did as well without mentioning Harvard by name. Some people in China joked online about having the university open a branch in the northeastern ******** city of Harbin, whose name shares the same character as Harvard’s name in ********. Wait and see Mumbai-based higher education and career advisory firm, ReachIvy, is receiving anxious queries from aspirants and their parents about the impact of Trump administration’s latest move. The company’s founder, Vibha Kagzi, herself an alumnus of the Harvard Business School, said they were advising students to keep calm, and wait to see how the situation unfolds as legal challenges were underway. “Harvard will surely fight back,” she said, adding that the situation remains fluid. Kagzi, while recalling her days from 2010 at Harvard, said the U.S. was then welcoming international students and its immigration policies supported educational aspirants. “Indian students should stay hopeful. Universities value global talent and are exploring all options to ensure continuity in admission and learning,” she said. ___ Associated Press writer Kanis Leung in Hong Kong and AP researcher Shihuan Chen contributed. Swiatek ready for French defence after attitude shift Swiatek ready for French defence after attitude shift Iga Swiatek has spent the past fortnight digesting a tough Rome defeat and recalibrating her mindset as she returns to Roland Garros chasing a fourth successive French Open crown. The Pole admitted on Friday that she had been weighed down by perfectionism in recent weeks but believes a subtle shift in attitude could be the key to extending her dominance on Parisian clay. “After (the third-round defeat in) Rome, I had a lot of time to think about how I played and what my attitude was,” Swiatek told reporters. “I realised I needed to change something and maybe get a little bit more energetic before matches.” The 23-year-old, who lifted the Coupe Suzanne Lenglen in 2020, 2022, 2023 and last year, said she had been guilty of over-focusing on mistakes, anchoring them instead of moving past them — a trap for any elite athlete. “It’s not that complicated. Sometimes you just need to be more brave, go for it, and not overthink the errors,” said Swiatek, who begins her bid for a fourth straight title against Slovakian Rebecca Sramkova. Despite recent frustrations, Swiatek said she was buoyed by strong form on the practice court and a sense of homecoming at Roland Garros, where she feels “just good” both on and off the clay. As for conditions, she dismissed concerns about the unpredictable spring weather in Paris. “I feel like I’m a good player in terms of adjusting,” she said. “It’s all about reacting quickly. No point to overthink it.” Meanwhile, one Paris restaurant has lost a customer after a dodgy meal put paid to Aryna Sabalenka’s hopes last year. World No.1 Sabalenka was left doubled over with stomach trouble as she fell to defeat to teenager Mirra Andreeva in the last eight. Now the Belarusian has vowed to watch what she eats at the home of haute cuisine as she bids to add a maiden Roland Garros to her US and *********** Open titles. “I’m definitely not going to go for the same meal I had before that quarter-final match. The lesson is learned,” she said. “Since then we did a couple of adjustments on my food, and yeah, just make sure that it’s never going to happen again. “Of course I’m super-motivated, because I felt like last year I was really ready to be in the last stages of the tournament, but my body didn’t really feel the same. I’m motivated more than I was last year.” Sabalenka kicks off her tournament against Russian Kamilla Rakhimova on Sunday. Meteorologists make unexpected discovery while observing Atlantic Ocean: ‘It’s a significant difference’ Meteorologists make unexpected discovery while observing Atlantic Ocean: ‘It’s a significant difference’ With 2025’s hurricane season just around the corner, meteorologists tracking the Atlantic Ocean are seeing an unexpected development. According to reporting by USA Today, a patch of the eastern Atlantic isn’t warming at the same rate, which could have important implications for hurricane activity in the summer. “It’s a significant difference,” the article stated. What’s happening? Scientists closely monitor the Atlantic’s “main development region,” a key area between western Africa and Central America where most hurricanes form. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, a surface temperature of 80 degrees Fahrenheit or more is needed to create a tropical cyclone. Rising ocean temperatures caused by human activity create favorable conditions for more frequent and severe hurricanes. This year, the ocean surface temperature is about 2 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than last year’s record-breaking temperature. Phil Klotzbach, a hurricane researcher at Colorado State University, told USA Today: “Thankfully, sea-surface temperature anomalies are WAY cooler than they were last year at this time. They were downright scary in late April of 2024.” Experts have cautioned that while this year’s temperatures are below last year’s, they are still above average, per The Weather Channel, and last month was actually the fourth-warmest April on record in the Northern Hemisphere and the second-warmest April on record globally. Colorado State is projecting above-average activity for 2025, with a forecast of 17 storms and nine hurricanes. Why is the ocean’s temperature important? The unusual cooling in the main development region may bode well for 2025’s hurricane season, but ocean temperatures are still higher than average. Rising global temperatures heighten the severity of natural disasters, acting like “steroids for weather.” The effects of a warmer Atlantic are felt worldwide, impacting crucial sea ice levels in the Arctic. A loss of sea ice compounds the problems of warming ocean temperatures and disrupts the food web of many species that rely on it. Watch now: Giant snails invading New York City? What’s being done about warming ocean temperatures? In the short term, for those who live in affected areas, preventative measures can help reduce the harm done. For example, NOAA advises identifying dangers to your home and property before the season begins. Thinking further ahead, collective efforts can cool the planet and, therefore, the ocean’s temperature. Measures such as making sustainable home improvements and installing rooftop solar panels not only help the planet but also save money. Online tools such as the one provided by EnergySage offer a good starting point for getting the best deal. AMD’s New RX 9060 XT Graphics Card Will Launch In 8GB And 16GB VRAM Versions AMD’s New RX 9060 XT Graphics Card Will Launch In 8GB And 16GB VRAM Versions AMD announced its latest graphics card, the Radeon RX 9060 X, at Computex 2025 earlier this week. This is the third GPU in AMD’s 9000 series lineup that also includes the RX 9070 and 9070 XT, and its slated to launch June 5. While it’s positioned as the entry-level option in the RX 9000 series, the RX 9060 XT runs on the same RNDA 4 architecture as the more powerful RX 9070 and 9070 XT and includes FSR 4 resolution upscaling and frame generation, as well as DisplayPort 2.1a and HDMI 2.1b support. AMD is producing two versions of the RX 9060 XT: one with 8GB VRAM and another with 16GB VRAM. Both models will feature 32 RDNA 4 CUs (computation units), up to 3.13GHz clock speed, and between 150W and 182W power draw, depending on the model’s VRAM and clock speed. While those are solid specs for an entry-level card, things get a bit more confusing from there. Power and pricing AMD lists the MSRP as $300 for the 8GB model and $350 for the 16GB model. However, the company is not releasing RX 9060 XT reference cards itself. Instead, third-party manufacturers like Asus, Acer, Gigabyte, and others are launching their own versions of the RX 9060 XT starting June 5. As such, performance, power draw, and pricing will likely differ between the various RX 9060 XT models (especially for overclocked models), but at least some of these GPUs will stick to the reference clock speeds and therefore MSRP (assuming the ongoing tariffs do not impact those prices). Asus is launching three RX 9060 XT models As for performance, the RX 9060 XT 16GB is positioned as the replacement for AMD’s RX 7600 XT as its flagship entry-level GPU, making it the primary competitor to Nvidia’s $300 GeForce RTX 5060 and RTX 5060 Ti (which costs either $380 for the 8GB version or $429 for the 16GB version). According to AMD’s Computex 2025 presentation, the company’s internal testing found the RX 9060 XT is roughly six percent faster than the RTX 5060 Ti on 40 games running at 1440p–and at roughly $80 MSRP cheaper. However, those tests compare the RX 9060 XT 16GB to the GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 8GB, rather than the RTX 5060 16GB. The RX 9060 8GB model’s performance is a ******* question, as the smaller amount of VRAM could lead to significant performance dips. On X (formerly Twitter), AMD’s Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions and Gaming Marketing, Frank Azor, explained that most players use a 1080p display, for which 8GB of VRAM is more than enough. While technically true, it doesn’t alleviate the concerns over confusing consumers who may see the above comparisons of the RX 9060 XT 16GB’s 6% performance boost over the RTX 5060 Ti 8GB and assume that applies to all RX 9060 XT models. And again, the actual performance will likely differ between the various SKUs launching June 5, which could further compound the issue. Majority of gamers are still playing at 1080p and have no use for more than 8GB of memory. Most played games WW are mostly esports games. We wouldn’t build it if there wasn’t a market for it. If 8GB isn’t right for you then there’s 16GB. Same GPU, no compromise, just memory… — Frank Azor (@AzorFrank) May 22, 2025 Where to find the AMD RX 9060 XT Those potential concerns and unanswered questions aside, the RX 9060 XT nevertheless looks like a solid entry-level choice for those already invested in AMD’s hardware. As mentioned above, multiple manufacturers are releasing RX 9060 XT GPUs starting June 5, and while none are currently listed for preorder, you can learn more about the models announced from Asus, Acer, and Gigabyte, at each company’s online store. Other brands like PowerColor also showed off upcoming RX 9060 XT GPUs on the Computex 2025 show floor. We’ll be sure to update this post once the GPUs are available. Vivid flips the switch on Sydney in first-night spectacular Vivid flips the switch on Sydney in first-night spectacular The Sydney CBD lit up for the first night of the annual Vivid festival on Friday night. More than three million people are expected to hit the streets over the 23-day event, taking in over 40 installations and projections spread across the Harbour City. This year’s theme is Dream – a vision of light, harmony and a future in balance. “In 2025, Vivid Sydney invites you to dream big,” the official website reads. “To go to the outer reaches of your mind, to think differently, without boundaries or preconceptions and to immerse yourself in new experiences and ideas. One of Vivid’s most highly-anticipated centrepieces is the lighting of the Opera House Sails. This year, it will display the works of David McDiarmid in Lighting of the Sails: Kiss of Light on the 30th anniversary of the artists death. The projections will act as a “rallying cry for equality, inclusion and freedom”, the festival organisers said, through a colourful and quirky lens – including slides of moving tiled shapes, rainbows and a green eyeball. NewsWire / John Appleyard Credit: News Corp Australia Destination NSW confirmed the decision to scrap the drone show, which has been part of the festival since 2021, in March citing safety concerns. It was thought the spectacle would bring in too many people and create dangerous conditions after crows were stuck in a bottleneck while trying to leave the western side of Circular Quay last year. Meanwhile, the light walk – which previously set festival-goers back $30 – will now be free as this year’s festival aims to be as “budget-friendly” as possible. The Smartest Dividend Stocks to Buy With $1,000 Right Now
Pelican Press posted a topic in World News
The Smartest Dividend Stocks to Buy With $1,000 Right Now The Smartest Dividend Stocks to Buy With $1,000 Right Now Dividend growers have delivered the highest total returns over the long term. Realty Income has increased its dividend 130 times since it went public. Brookfield Infrastructure has raised its dividend in all 16 years since its formation. 10 stocks we like better than Realty Income › The data on dividend stocks makes a clear case. Over the past 50 years, dividend payers in the S&P 500 have outperformed non-dividend payers by more than 2-to-1, with a 9.2% average annual return compared to 4.3%, according to data from Ned Davis Research and Hartford Funds. However, within that group, there is a wide variation, as dividend growers have significantly outperformed both companies with no change in their dividends and those that have cut or eliminated their payouts, at 10.2%, 6.8%, and negative-0.9%, respectively. Given that dataset, the smartest dividend stocks to buy are those that routinely increase their dividends. Two top options for those with $1,000 to invest right now are Realty Income (NYSE: O) and Brookfield Infrastructure (NYSE: BIPC)(NYSE: BIP). They offer higher dividend yields and an excellent record of growing their dividends, which seems highly likely to continue. Image source: Getty Images. Realty Income has been a dividend growth juggernaut over the years. The real estate investment trust (REIT) has raised its monthly dividend payment 130 times since its public market listing in 1994. It has increased its payment for 110 straight quarters and 30 years in a row. The company has grown its payout at a 4.3% compound annual rate, which has helped support a 13.6% compound annual total return since its listing. The landlord currently has a 5.7% dividend yield. The REIT would generate $57 of annual dividend income from every $1,000 invested in its stock at that rate. It backs that payout with a high-quality portfolio and financial profile. The REIT owns a diversified portfolio of over 15,600 properties, including retail, industrial, and gaming, among others, across the U.S. and several European countries. It secures these properties with long-term net leases with many of the world’s leading companies. Net leases provide it with very stable rental income because tenants cover all property operating expenses, including routine maintenance, real estate taxes, and building insurance. Meanwhile, it has a conservative dividend payout ratio of around 75% of its adjusted funds from operations (FFO). That gives it a nice cushion while enabling it to retain significant excess free cash flow each year to help fund new real estate investments. Realty Income also has one of the strongest balance sheets in the REIT sector, giving it additional financial flexibility to buy more income-generating properties. With an estimated $14 trillion in commercial real estate suitable for the net lease structure across the U.S. and Europe, Realty Income has a long growth runway. Story Continues Brookfield Infrastructure has done a terrific job growing its dividend over the years. The global infrastructure operator has increased its payout for 16 straight years, every year since its formation. It has delivered dividend growth within or above its 5% to 9% annual target range during that *******. That steadily rising payout has helped fuel an average annual total return of 13.5% since Brookfield’s launch. The diversified infrastructure company currently yields 4.4%. That high-yielding payout is on a sustainable foundation. About 85% of the company’s FFO comes from contracted or regulated frameworks that provide it with stable cash flow. Most of its FFO is indexed to inflation or protected from the impact of inflation. Meanwhile, the company pays out a conservative 60% to 70% of its stable cash flow in dividends. Brookfield also has a strong investment-grade balance sheet. Brookfield’s strong financial profile gives it the flexibility to invest in expanding its operations. The company has nearly $8 billion in capital projects in its backlog that it expects to complete over the next two to three years, including two U.S. semiconductor facilities and several data center projects around the world. The company will also acquire infrastructure platforms that produce stable income. For example, it recently agreed to invest $500 million into the acquisition of a major U.S. refined products pipeline system. Brookfield expects its investments to help drive double-digit annual FFO per share growth over the long term. Realty Income and Brookfield Infrastructure have been model dividend stocks over the years. They have steadily increased their higher-yielding payouts, which have helped support their strong total returns. With more dividend growth likely, they look like smart dividend stocks to buy right now. Percy in tie for Senior PGA lead, but a big name lurks Percy in tie for Senior PGA lead, but a big name lurks *********** Cameron Percy is part of a three-way tie atop the leaderboard midway through the Senior PGA Championship at Congressional. The Victorian, who held a one-shot lead overnight, shot a one-under 71 on Friday and was joined by the high-profile Vijay Singh (68) and YE Yang (68) at six under in the PGA Tour Champions second major. With conditions changing throughout his round, Percy kept looking for the big American flag to see how windy it was at any given moment and credited growing up in Melbourne for knowing how to handle it. “I think the wind definitely helps me,” Percy said. “You get down in the tree lines and you can’t feel the wind, and then you walk 200 yards and it’s blowing like crazy.” Singh, who was world No.1 for 32 weeks between 2004 and 2005, started thinking about what he might do with his weekend after bogeying the first three holes on Friday. “Your mind just goes haywire,” he said. “But I’ve played long enough to know that there’s a lot of golf out there.” Then, he showed it. After missing the Masters and PGA Championship this spring because of an undisclosed injury, Singh looked perfectly healthy the rest of the second round with seven birdies to surge to the top. “I’ve been driving the ball good,” Singh said. “Just hung in there and started making a couple of birdies here and there, picked up the shots, and the back nine I played solid golf.” The 62-year-old from Fiji is aiming for his first career victory at the course in the Maryland suburbs just outside of Washington, which he has played a handful of times, including the 1997 US Open. He tied for 77th then and missed the cut in his last event at Congressional, Tiger Woods’ tournament in 2014. “I’ve always loved playing here,” Singh said, noting that much has changed from his previous tries. “It’s totally a different golf course, totally new golf course. The greens are very challenging, to say the least.” Singh, who was known for his rigorous practice habits, has cut that part of his routine in half. “Once I get on the range and hit, it used to be I’d go out there and hit five, six good shots and I’d say, ‘OK, let’s see if I can do 20 of these ones,'” Singh said. “But now if I hit two or three good shots, I say, ‘I’ve had enough, that’s it.'” Yang birdied four of his last five holes. Padraig Harrington headlined a crowded group two strokes back at four under. Stuart Cink, Justin Leonard, defending champion Richard Bland and others were at three under. Ernie Els followed an opening 69 with a 75 to drop to even par. He won the 1997 US Open at Congressional. Scott Hend (74) is the next best *********** at even par, while Mark Hensby (74) and Mick Smith (73) are a short further behind. India to push for international financial measures against Pakistan, source says India to push for international financial measures against Pakistan, source says By Aftab Ahmed NEW DELHI (Reuters) -India will push the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), a global financial crime watchdog, to add arch-rival Pakistan back to its “grey list”, and oppose upcoming World Bank funding to Islamabad, a top government source in New Delhi said on Friday. India announced a slew of measures as retribution for what it says are Pakistan-backed militant attacks on its soil – the latest of which killed 26 Hindu tourists in the Kashmir valley last month – including keeping a critical water treaty in abeyance. The source said India would not miss any opportunity “in opposing Pakistan and the next one is funding by World Bank, and we will raise our protest there too.” Pakistan’s finance ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Pakistan has denied any hand in the Kashmir attack and has said India’s move of keeping the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance is an act of war. The nuclear-armed neighbours clashed in their worst military fighting in nearly three decades before agreeing to a ceasefire on May 10. Pakistan was taken off the FATF grey list in 2022, giving it a clean bill of health on terrorist financing and boosting its reputation among lenders – essential for Pakistan’s crisis-hit economy. The FATF’s grey list places a country under increased monitoring until it has rectified identified flaws in its financial system. The Indian government source alleged that Pakistan had not met the conditions for being taken off the grey list, and should therefore be returned to it. India also told the IMF that arms purchases by Pakistan spiked every time it got a loan from the International Monetary Fund, the source said. Reuters could not immediately verify the claims. The FATF, the World Bank, and the IMF did not respond to requests for comment. Pakistan secured a $7 billion bailout programme from the IMF last year, and a new $1.4 billion arrangement this month under a climate resilience fund. At a press conference in Washington on Thursday, IMF director Julie Kozack said Pakistan had met all of its targets and made progress on reforms, leading the board to approve the programme last year. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Thursday that Pakistan, its army and its economy would “have to pay a heavy price for every terrorist attack.” (Reporting by Aftab Ahmed, additional reporting by Ariba Shahid in Karachi, writing by Shilpa Jamkhandikar; Editing by Aidan Lewis) Source link #India #push #international #financial #measures #Pakistan #source Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

DOGE cuts to weather balloon sites leave U.S. without crucial data, some meteorologists say DOGE cuts to weather balloon sites leave U.S. without crucial data, some meteorologists say Detroit — When the National Guard has to be called out for an ice storm, as was the case in Northern Michigan at the end of March, the situation is dire. At the time, meteorologists couldn’t forecast just how much of the region would be encased in ice. “While it [the forecast] showed devastating ice, it ended up still being worse than expected,” said Ahmad Bajjey, CBS News Detroit’s chief meteorologist. Up to 1.5 inches of ice accumulated across large portions of Northern Michigan, knocking down power lines, blocking roads, and damaging homes and businesses. Last month, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer requested federal disaster aid. Bajjey said he was working without National Weather Service data he usually counts on. “We couldn’t get true real-world data as often as needed,” Bajjey said. At least 13 of nearly 100 balloon sites were cut or reduced when the White House’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, took aim at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration earlier this year. Two of them, one in Michigan and another in Wisconsin, left gaps in data. Those gaps could have helped during the March ice storm, as well as last week, when dangerous thunderstorms and tornadoes hit Wisconsin, meteorologists say. There have also been cuts in places like the Rocky Mountains in the western U.S. and “Tornado Alley” in the central U.S., where storms get started and move east. One balloon site was also eliminated in the Florida Panhandle just days before the start of the Atlantic hurricane season. For the past 100 years of U.S. weather forecasting, there’s no better substitute to weather balloons, meteorologists say. Associate professor of meteorology Dr. John Allen teaches future meteorologists at Central Michigan University. He also studies how artificial intelligence can improve forecasts. But he says the data received from weather balloons is irreplaceable. He showed CBS News a device used to communicate with a weather balloon. “So what this device is doing is reporting back every couple of seconds as we look through the whole column of the atmosphere,” Allen said. His research in AI cannot make up for a lack of air pressure and moisture data collected by balloons. “If we have clouds, satellites really don’t tell us much about what’s actually happening,” he said, explaining why weather balloons are essential and their data cannot be duplicated by satellites or radar. Dr. John Allen, right, associate professor of meteorology at Central Michigan University, teaching students how to use and collect data from a weather balloon. May 2025. CBS News In a statement to CBS on News Friday, a NOAA spokesperson defended NWS forecasting. “The National Weather Service is committed to delivering accurate, timely, and life-saving forecasts despite speculation,” the spokesperson said. “Through strategic transformation, staff reallocation, and updated service standards, NWS is ensuring resilience and continuity of mission-critical functions. Reports suggesting otherwise are false and disrespectful to the many weather scientists who work tirelessly to produce the best weather data in the world.” In the meantime, some meteorologists like Bajjey say they have no choice but to make do with new limitations. “This is about public safety,” Bajjey said. “It’s every single forecast, every warning, every alert, and every update. And this is where it comes from.” In an open letter published earlier this month, five living former NWS leaders issued a warning about the impact of staffing and program cuts to the NOAA. “Our worst nightmare is that weather forecast offices will be so understaffed that there will be needless loss of life,” the letter said. “We know that’s a nightmare shared by those on the forecasting front lines – and by the people who depend on their efforts.” Dave Malkoff Dave Malkoff is a national correspondent with the CBS Innovation Lab, where his work appears across all CBS News and Station platforms. Trump is killing the goose that laid America’s golden eggs Trump is killing the goose that laid America’s golden eggs There’s no doubt that bloated government bureaucracies need pruning—like an overgrown forest choking off light and life beneath. Universities, too, have often lost their way, nurturing ideological extremes and tolerating open defiance of civil norms. Harvard and other elite institutions have enabled left-wing extremism, including support for ****** and a disturbing rise in antisemitism. Free speech has suffered, and accountability has waned. These institutions must be held to U.S. laws and ethical standards. But President Trump’s response—slashing research funding and targeting international students—isn’t pruning. It’s setting fire to the entire forest. And in the process, he’s threatening the very roots of America’s scientific leadership, economic prosperity, and global influence. The global competitiveness of the United States has always depended on its universities—on their openness to talent and their commitment to research. From the microchip to the biotech revolution, many of the innovations that defined modern America were born in academic labs. They were powered by brilliant minds drawn from around the world and sustained by public funding. The internet (UCLA), Google’s search algorithm (Stanford), GPS (MIT), and mRNA vaccines (UPenn) all originated in U.S. universities. So did breakthroughs in clean energy, artificial intelligence, and ******* treatments—like CRISPR gene-editing and immunotherapies. Now, due to Trump’s actions, even life-saving ******* research is being halted midstream as federal grants are frozen and labs shut down. Harvard University, long considered a beacon for international scholars, has had its authority to enroll foreign students revoked. Over $2.7 billion in federal research funding has been frozen. MIT has announced cuts to graduate admissions and layoffs of research staff. The University of California system is engaged in lawsuits to stop NIH grant reductions. All of this will significantly harm American scientific progress. The casualties are not just academic departments—they include ******* trials, climate research, vaccine development, and national security projects in quantum computing and cybersecurity. Hundreds of labs across the country are reporting frozen budgets, canceled contracts, and the departure of top talent. Institutions like Johns Hopkins, Stanford, and the University of Michigan have warned that essential federally funded research in public health, advanced manufacturing, and clean energy is now at risk. Although a federal judge has temporarily blocked the administration’s attempt to strip Harvard of its authority to enroll international students, the damage is already done. The legal reprieve doesn’t undo the chilling effect on global talent or the disruption to research programs already underway. The uncertainty alone has weakened America’s standing as the global destination for cutting-edge innovation. This decline is especially tragic given the historic accomplishments of American research institutions. Public investments in university science have given us not just medical miracles and digital revolutions, but entire industries. NIH and NSF funding helped spawn biotech, clean-tech, and nanotech. DARPA grants gave us GPS and the early internet. These are the roots of the U.S. innovation economy. Undermining them is like ripping out the foundation of a skyscraper mid-construction. And it’s not just the research funding that’s under attack—it’s the people who bring that research to life. For decades, the United States enjoyed the greatest free lunch in the history of education and entrepreneurship: the smartest students from India, China, and across the globe came to study here. They didn’t just learn. They stayed. They built companies. They created jobs. Immigrants have played a starring role in nearly every American success story of the past half-century. More than half of Silicon Valley’s startups were founded by immigrants. A 2022 report from the National Foundation for American Policy found that 55% of America’s unicorn startups—those valued at over $1 billion—were started by immigrants. That list includes companies like Tesla, Google, Intel, PayPal, Moderna, and Zoom. In science and medicine, the pattern is the same. Foreign-born researchers are disproportionately represented among Nobel Prize winners in the U.S., among faculty at leading universities, and among the inventors behind patents filed by top American institutions. More than 75% of patents from U.S. research universities list at least one foreign-born inventor. And yet, the Trump administration has gone out of its way to block these very contributors. During the pandemic, it attempted to revoke the visas of international students attending online classes. Visa processing delays have become routine. Highly skilled immigrants, including PhDs and postdocs, now face long waits, opaque rules, and rising uncertainty. The result? A slow-moving brain drain has become a stampede. Talented researchers are heading to Europe, Canada, and Australia instead. I warned of this scenario in my book The Immigrant Exodus more than a decade ago. At the time, it was a cautionary tale. Today, it’s an unfolding reality. We are witnessing a deliberate dismantling of the U.S. innovation ecosystem—one visa and one research grant at a time. To be clear, not all criticism of universities is unwarranted. There is bloat. There is waste. And some institutions have failed to uphold the principles of academic neutrality. But that doesn’t justify blind destruction. There’s a difference between pruning a tree and torching the orchard. Even from a purely economic perspective, these policies are indefensible. International students alone contribute over $40 billion annually to the U.S. economy. They pay full tuition. They rent housing. They spend in their local communities. Many go on to become entrepreneurs, taxpayers, and job creators. Meanwhile, research funding supports hundreds of thousands of jobs in every state. It powers startups, anchors regional economies, and drives the industries of tomorrow. Weakening that foundation doesn’t just harm universities—it weakens America. The cruel irony is that these policies will hurt the very people Trump claims to defend: working Americans. When universities lose research grants, they cut faculty and staff. When international students go elsewhere, local businesses—from coffee shops to apartment complexes—take the hit. When breakthroughs are delayed or lost, America loses its competitive edge—and the jobs and industries that follow. China doesn’t need to outspend America to win the innovation race. It only needs to watch the United States unravel its own lead. And that’s exactly what’s happening. Still, I haven’t lost hope. The United States has stumbled before—and corrected course. The backlash to these policies is growing. Universities are fighting back. Business leaders are speaking out. Courts are stepping in. My hope is that this is just another Trumpian overreach—damaging, yes, but ultimately reversible. America’s strength has always come from its openness: to new people, to bold ideas, and to investment in the future. It was immigrants and research grants that built the internet, cured disease, and launched the industries that power our economy today. If we remember that—and act on it—this won’t be the beginning of America’s decline, but a painful detour on the road to renewal. Forde equals fastest ODI fifty before Ireland wash-out Forde equals fastest ODI fifty before Ireland wash-out West Indies all-rounder Matthew Forde equalled AB de Villiers’ record for the fastest one-day international half-century before the match against Ireland in Dublin was abandoned due to rain. Forde reached 50 in 16 deliveries, matching the feat set by South Africa’s De Villiers in 2015, and struck eight sixes and two fours in a 19-ball 58 as West Indies racked up 8-352 off their 50 overs on Friday. Keacy Carty had earlier hit 13 fours and a maximum on his way to a relatively-sedate 102 off 109 deliveries and with skipper Shai Hope and Justin Greaves chipping in with 49 and 44 not out respectively, the tourists notched a hefty total. Liam McCarthy was the pick of Ireland’s bowlers, taking three for 66, while namesake Barry McCarthy and Josh Little took two wickets each. Rain forced the second ODI in the series to be abandoned after a two-hour delay. Ireland lead the series 1-0 after their 124-run win on Wednesday, with the two sides set to meet again at Clontarf in the final match on Sunday. Kyiv comes under large-scale Russian drone and missile attack with explosions heard throughout city Kyiv comes under large-scale Russian drone and missile attack with explosions heard throughout city KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine’s capital came under a large-scale combined drone and missile attack late Friday with explosions and machine gun fire heard throughout the city. Many Kyiv residents were taking shelter in underground subway stations. The nighttime Russian attack that stretched into early Saturday came hours after Russia and Ukraine began a major prisoner exchange, swapping hundreds of soldiers and civilians in the first phase of an exchange that was agreed on by the two sides at a meeting in Istanbul last week. The agreement was a moment of cooperation in otherwise failed efforts to reach a ceasefire in the 3-year-old war. The debris of intercepted missiles and drones fell in at least 4 city districts of the capital, acting head of Kyiv military administration, Tymur Tkachenko, wrote on Telegram. According to Tkachenko, six people required medical care after the attack, two fires sparked at Solomianskyi district of Kyiv. Prior to the attack, city mayor Vitalii Klitschko warned Kyiv residents of more than 20 Russian strike drones heading towards Kyiv. The prisoners swap Friday was the first phase of a complicated swap involving prisoners and civilians. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the first phase brought home 390 Ukrainians, with further releases expected over the weekend that will make it the largest swap of the war. Russia’s Defense Ministry said it received the same number from Ukraine. The exchange, which would be the latest of dozens of swaps since the war began and the biggest involving Ukrainian civilians at one time, didn’t herald any halt in fighting. Battles also continued along the roughly 1,000-kilometer (620-mile) front line, where tens of thousands of soldiers have been killed, and neither country has relented in its deep strikes.
