EatingWell design. Key Points Sugary drinks are the top source of added sugars in the American diet. Their sugar can increase triglycerides, which are blood fats that raise heart disease risk. They may also increase blood sugar and belly **** and crowd out more nutritious options. When it comes to heart health, most people focus on cholesterol. But triglycerides are just as important. Triglycerides are a type of **** in the blood that our bodies use for energy. High triglycerides can raise your risk of heart disease by leading to a buildup of small, cholesterol-rich particles in the artery walls. This can trigger inflammation and contribute to artery-blocking plaque formation. Cutting back on **** might seem like the obvious first choice. However, one of the top contributors to high triglycerides is actually sugar-sweetened drinks, like soda, sweet tea, syrup-spiked coffees and sports drinks. The link is so strong that research has found that people who drink just 12 ounces of sugar-sweetened beverages per day are 48% more likely to have elevated triglycerides. That’s a lot! So, we spoke to registered dietitians to find out how cutting back on sugar-sweetened drinks can help lower high triglycerides. Here’s what they told us, plus realistic strategies to improve your triglycerides for a healthier heart. How Sugar-Sweetened Drinks Can Increase the Risk of High TriglyceridesThey Spike Blood Sugar and Insulin Levels Research has found that high sugar-sweetened beverage consumption is strongly linked to insulin resistance. That may sound like it’s just a blood sugar issue, but insulin resistance may also influence triglyceride levels. How so? While sugary drinks are loaded with sugar, they rarely contain ****, protein or fiber to help slow glucose digestion and absorption. As a result, glucose is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, resulting in a rapid spike in blood sugar and insulin. Over time, this can lead to insulin resistance, which alters lipid metabolism, leading to high triglycerides, low HDL-cholesterol and increased small, dense LDL-cholesterol particles. All of these can set the stage for heart disease. They Provide More Sugar Than Your Body Can Handle Even though triglycerides are a type of ****, they’re formed primarily from eating excess carbohydrates and sugars. Consider what happens after drinking a 12-ounce can of cola. Its 37 grams of pure sugar are far more than your body can handle in one sitting, especially when combined with other carbohydrates and sugars from a meal or snack. What does the body do with all that sugar? “Excess sugar is stored in the body as glycogen. Once these stores are full, our liver converts excess sugar into fatty acids, and combined with other molecules, they form triglycerides,” explains Melissa Jaeger, RD, LD. They Often Contain High-Fructose Corn Syrup Many sweetened beverages are made with high fructose corn syrup, which may be even more harmful to your blood **** and glucose levels than table sugar. In one study, adults who drank three fructose-rich beverages daily for 10 weeks had higher levels of triglyceride-transporting particles in their bloodstreams than volunteers who consumed the same amount of glucose-rich drinks. What, exactly, makes fructose so problematic? When we consume excessive amounts of fructose, like from HFCS-sweetened drinks, the liver turns all that fructose into **** through a process called de novo lipogenesis. This happens when there is more sugar available than the liver can store as carbohydrate, and it occurs more rapidly with fructose than with glucose consumption. They May Increase Belly **** Deep belly ****, known as visceral ****, can spell all kinds of trouble for your health. Visceral **** releases **** into the bloodstream quickly, whereas **** stored under the skin (like in the hips or thighs) is stored and released much more slowly. This makes abdominal **** especially harmful, increasing the risk for numerous metabolic health conditions, including elevated triglycerides. Research has found that greater added sugar intake may be a powerful driver of visceral **** storage. For instance, one study found people who consumed lots of added sugars from sugar-sweetened beverages and other sources were 27% more likely to have abdominal obesity and were also 28% more prone to obesity. They’re Easy to Consume in Excess Sugar-sweetened beverages are our top source of added sugars, delivering an estimated 21% of our total sugar intake. One important reason: “It’s easy to over-consume calories from sugary drinks,” says Mandy Tyler, M.Ed., RD, CSSD. “Although they may taste refreshing, they don’t tend to fill you up.” Consider how you feel after eating a piece of cake versus drinking a glass of sweet tea. It’s much quicker—and easier—to drink that sugar in liquid form. They Replace Healthier Options “While our bodies may use some of the sugar in drinks for an immediate source of energy, these drinks also deliver extra calories with little to no nutritional value,” says Jaeger. Sugary drinks like soda, sweet tea, energy drinks, sugary lattes and even some fruit-flavored beverages often replace healthier options like water, milk or nutrient-rich smoothies. Strategies to Improve Triglycerides Limit or avoid alcohol: “When you drink alcohol, your liver puts ****-burning on hold to process the alcohol first,” explains Katie Schimmelpfenning, RD, LD. “That slowdown can cause more ****, especially triglycerides, to build up in your blood.” Get regular physical activity: Physical activity, especially aerobic exercise, helps to lower triglycerides by improving glucose and **** metabolism. Not sure where to start? “Consider going for a walk during lunch, taking the stairs, parking farther away at the grocery store or enjoying a family walk after dinner,” suggests Taylor McClelland Newman, M.S., RD, LD. Eat more fiber-rich foods: “Fiber helps lower triglycerides by slowing digestion and reducing **** and sugar absorption,” says Schimmelpfenning. Eating high-fiber foods with each meal and snack can help you hit the recommended daily 25 to 38 grams. Add in fatty fish: The American Heart Association recommends eating at least two 3-ounce servings of fatty fish like salmon, mackerel, herring, anchovies and sardines weekly. Research reveals their long-chain omega-3 fats, EPA and DHA, may help reduce triglycerides. The Bottom Line Regularly drinking sugar-sweetened beverages can be a major contributor to high triglycerides. Their excessive sugar can elevate triglycerides by increasing blood sugar, insulin and belly **** and by providing more sugar and fructose than your body can efficiently metabolize in one sitting. In addition, sugary drinks are easy to consume in excess and usually replace more nutritious alternatives. That doesn’t mean you can never enjoy a small glass of sweet tea or a soda. But limiting sugary drinks, combined with lifestyle changes like limiting or avoiding alcohol, exercising and eating more fatty fish and fiber-rich foods, can help keep your triglycerides in check and protect your heart. Getty Alleged UFO spotted over Holloman Air Development Center in New Mexico Julia Mossbridge — a member of the University of San Diego Department of Physics and Biophysics, and the founder of The Institute for Love and Time (TILT) — told Fox News that she is skeptical of the sphere’s origins. “It looks to me like a really cool art project,” she told the outlet. “Before you decide something’s anomalous or a UFO, bring the object to a group like the Galileo Project,” Mossbridge continued, referring to the international research project founded by Harvard University astrophysicist Avi Loeb, which aims to vet and study potential extraterrestrial artifacts through rigorous scientific research. The researcher added that similar findings might say more about the current state of humanity than about the universe at large. “We are entering a time when we don’t have the control that we thought we had,” she told Fox News. “If an artist is doing this, why is that? And no one in the country believes that that’s right. So there’s a moral component to what we’re doing. And when you make young men work, it’s good for them, it’s good for their dignity, it’s good for their self-worth, and it’s good for the community that they live in.” The GOP-controlled House passed the massive bill, which sets priorities for Mr. Trump’s agenda for upcoming budgets, by just one vote in the early hours Thursday after an all-night session. The bill is now headed to the Senate, where several Republicans have already voiced concerns, including Sens. Josh Hawley and Rand Paul. The bill went through intense debate in two committees last week as an alliance of blue-state Republicans and fiscal hawks refused to budge. Given Republicans’ razor-thin majority in the House, Mr. Trump went to the Hill on Tuesday to rally the holdouts in the GOP conference. To pay for some of Mr. Trump’s tax reforms, such as extending his 2017 tax cuts and eliminating tax on tips, there are cuts to several programs. Republicans have insisted they are not cutting Medicaid, and reductions in the low-income entitlement program have become one of the most charged parts of the bill. In a closed-door session Tuesday with members of the Republican conference, sources in the room told CBS News Mr. Trump said, “Don’t f*** around with Medicaid.” To save money on Medicaid, the final version of the bill puts work requirements on Medicaid, which Johnson has insisted will account for the bulk of any cost-cutting. An analysis by the healthcare nonprofit KFF found that 190,000 people in Louisiana, Johnson’s home state, stand to lose Medicaid under new requirements. Johnson insisted on Sunday that “we have not cut Medicaid, and we have not cut SNAP,” the food stamp program. “What we’re doing … is working on fraud, waste and abuse, and everyone in Louisiana and around the country understands that that’s a responsibility of Congress,” Johnson said. He said there are 4.8 million Americans on Medicaid who are “able-bodied workers, young men, for example, who are not working, who are taking advantage of the system.” Calling it a “moral component” to put Americans to work, he added, “when you make young men work, it’s good for them, it’s good for their dignity, it’s good for their self-worth, and it’s good for the community that they live in.” Johnson also claimed some of those who are on Medicaid and SNAP are undocumented immigrants, although they are not eligible to receive food stamps or Medicaid. When moderator Margaret Brennan pushed back for Johnson to clarify that his position is that the estimated 190,000 Louisianans who stand to lose Medicaid coverage are “lazy, not working? That they were undocumented? What about them? How do you defend that they will be losing their benefits?” “No. What we’re talking about, again, is able-bodied workers, many of whom are refusing to work because they’re gaming the system,” Johnson said. “And when we make them work, it’ll be better for everybody, a win-win-win for all.” Johnson said the Medicaid work requirements are “not some onerous, burdensome thing,” saying they require recipients to work a minimum of 20 hours a week — either working, be in job training programs or volunteering in the community. “When the American people understand what we are doing here, they applaud it,” Johnson said. “This is a wildly popular thing, because we have to preserve the programs. What we’re doing is strengthening Medicaid and SNAP so that they can exist, so that they’ll be there for the people that desperately need it the most, and it’s not being taken advantage of. And this is something that everybody in Congress, Republicans and Democrats, should agree to.” But as the bill heads to the Senate for debate, the GOP’s Hawley has called it “both morally wrong and politically suicidal” to slash Medicaid, indicating brewing opposition to it in that chamber. Hawley particularly took issue with a cost-sharing measure with Medicaid between federal and state governments, which he said would force those at or just over the federal poverty level to pay as much as $35 for a medical visit. Johnson pushed back on that claim, saying that the House included in the bill a “modest state-sharing component, so that they’ll pay attention to that, so that we can reduce fraud.” But as Brennan noted, the bill still has to pass the Senate, and if Senators make the expected changes to the bill, it will have to go back to the House. Johnson said he had lunch with his Republican counterparts in the upper chamber on Tuesday, and he said he reminded them that they are a team. “It’s the Senate and the House Republicans together that will deliver this ball over the goal line, so to speak,” Johnson said. “And I encouraged them to make as few modifications as possible, remembering that I have a very delicate balance on our very diverse Republican caucus over in the House.” Caroline Linton Caroline Linton is an associate managing editor on the political team for CBSNews.com. Former Centrelink financial information officer-turned independent financial planner Annette Sinclair said the delays had been significant. “While some go through reasonably quickly, the majority seem stuck in the system for at least two months — and often longer,” Mrs Sinclair said. One reader who contacted Your Money lodged a completed application in December last year. The application was cancelled because of some missing information and later resubmitted. After waiting several weeks for a response, it was discovered the insurance cover for the home came up for renewal during that *******. Although renewed, it appears Centrelink had not requested proof of renewal and, therefore, rejected the application. The HEAS is a low-cost reverse mortgage arrangement which allows senior Australians to tap into their home’s equity at a relatively low interest rate of 3.95 per cent. Like other reverse mortgages, only real property can be offered as security. Houseboats, mobile homes and lease-for-life retirement village arrangements are ineligible. Commercial reverse mortgage rates are typically more than double the scheme’s rate, ranging between 8 and 10 per cent a year. The rate you are charged is important because unlike a conventional mortgage, you are not required to make any repayments. Instead, the interest cost is added to the loan and compounds. When the property is disposed of, the loan plus interest is repaid from the proceeds of the house *****. The higher the interest rate and the longer the loan is in place, the larger the amount that has to be repaid. Under the HEAS arrangements, people aged over 67 can access payments of up to 150 per cent of the age pension. That can be in the form of a boosted fortnightly pension payment or two lump sum amounts each year, separated by a six-month interval. That means a single could currently access up to $44,811 a year. For a couple, it’s a combined $67,555. Those amounts are less any age pensions received, so a single on a full fortnightly pension could access an extra $14,937 in a year and a couple $11,259 each, or a combined $22,518. Those amounts would be greater if the person was only receiving a part-pension because of means testing. “People accessing the lump sum amounts are often doing it for some urgent reason,” Mrs Sinclair said. “Travelling to visit a very sick relative, or replacing something like a car. It was an impressive live demo, with a live translation portion that went off well but not without hitches. Still, it got the crowd at Google I/O going, and right after that opening keynote wrapped, I strolled around the Shoreline Amphitheater to find a pair to try. Much like my time with Project Moohan, the prototype Android XR headset that Google and Samsung are working on, I only spent about five minutes with these prototype glasses. And no, it wasn’t a sleek frame made by Warby Parker or a wild one from Gentle Monsters – instead, it was the pair Google demoed on-stage, the prototype Android XR glasses made by Samsung. As you can see above, much like Meta Ray-Bans and unlike Snapchat Spectacles (the first gen), these prototypes look like standard ****** frames. They’re a bit thicker on either the left or right stems, but they’re also loaded with tech – though not in a way that screams it from the outside. You may like It was a short, pretty rushed demo, but certainly a compelling one. (Image credit: Jacob Krol/Future) The tech here is mostly hidden – there is a screen baked into the lens, which, when worn, appears as a little box when it’s showing something larger. Otherwise, when I first turned the glasses on, I saw the time and the weather hovering at the top of my field of vision. When I pressed the button on the right stem to capture a photo, it almost flashed transparently larger in my field of vision. Neat and a bit more present way of capturing than on the screen-less Meta Ray-Bans. These are both cool, and during the keynote, Google also shared that the screens could be used for messaging, calls, and translating as well, but I didn’t get to try that. While I couldn’t ask for directions myself, a Google rep within my demo was able to toss up what navigation would like, and this feature has me more excited about smart glasses with a screen built-in. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. Why? Well, it was that the experience of navigating doesn’t get in the way of my field of view – I can simply still look straight forward and see at the top that in 500-feet or 50-feet that I need to make a right onto a specific avenue. I don’t need to look down at my phone or glance at my wrist, it’s all housed in just one device. If I need more details or want to see my route, I could glance down to see a mini version of the map, which moved as I moved my head. If I wore these in NYC, I could walk normally and glance at the top to see directions, but when safely stopped and not in the way of others, I could look down to see my full route. That’s pretty neat to me. (Image credit: Jacob Krol/Future) The projected screen itself had good-enough quality, though I’m not sure how it performs in direct sunlight, as I tested these in a little room that Google had constructed. It’s important to remember that this is still a prototype – Google has several brands onboard to produce these, but there isn’t an exact timeframe. Developers will be able to start developing and testing by the end of the year, though. This year, the Project Moohan headset, which also runs Android XR, will arrive. Samsung will ship the headset in a to-be-revealed final version, which could build support from third parties and let Google get more feedback on the platform. Gemini, Google’s very wise AI assistant, blew me away on Project Moohan and was equally compelling on the Android XR glasses. I asked it for the weather, and got it to give me an audio report of the next few days, had it analyze a replica of a painting, and even look at a book, tell me the reviews, and where I could purchase it. That power of having Gemini in my frame has me really excited for the future of the category – it’s the audio responses, the connection to the Google ecosystem, and how it plays with the onboard screen. It remains to be seen how Samsung’s final design might look, but it will likely sit alongside several other Android XR-powered smart glasses from the likes of Warby Parker, X-Real, and Gentle Monster, among others. I’ve long worn Meta Ray-Bans and enjoy those for snapping unique shots or recording POVs like walking my dog Rosie or riding an attraction at a Disney Park. Similarly, I really enjoyed the original version of the Snapchat Spectacles, but the appeal wore off. Those both did only a short – or in the case of the Spectacles, very short – list of functions, but Android XR as a platform feels a heck of a lot more powerful, even from a short five-minute window. While the design didn’t sell me on Samsung’s prototype, I have high hopes for the Warby Parker ones. Seeing how Gemini’s smarts can fit into such a small frame and how a screen can be genuinely useful but not overly distracting really has me excited. I have a feeling not all of the Android XR glasses will appeal to everyone, but with enough entries, I’m sure one of them will pair form with function in a correct balance. Gemini in glasses feels less like the future, and considering this new entry, my eyes are set to see what Meta’s does next and what Apple’s much-rumored entry into the world of smart glasses will look like. She was 90. Brownmiller, who had been ill, died on Saturday at a New York hospital, according to Emily Jane Goodman, a retired New York State Supreme Court justice. “She was an active feminist; she was not one to just agree with the popular issue of the day,” said Goodman, whose friendship with Brownmiller spanned decades. A journalist, anti-war protester and civil rights activist before joining the second wave feminist movement in its formative years, Brownmiller was among many women who were radicalised in the ’60s and ’70s and part of the smaller circle that included Gloria Steinem, Betty Friedan and Kate Millett. While activists of the early 20th century focused on voting rights, second-wave feminism transformed conversations about sex, marriage, reproductive rights, workplace harassment and domestic violence. Brownmiller, as much as anyone, opened up the discussion of *****. By 2029, Russia may have reconstituted its forces sufficiently to attack NATO territory, according to estimates by Breuer and other senior military officials at NATO. The latest document, entitled “Directive Priorities for the Bolstering of Readiness”, which Breuer signed on May 19, said Germany will meet the goal with the help of funds made available by the loosening of the country’s debt brake in March. The defence ministry in Berlin did not immediately respond to requests for comment. In the directive, Breuer sets priorities for the weapons that should be acquired or developed most urgently, reflecting in part priorities NATO has previously laid out. Among them, Breuer lists the strengthening of Germany’s depleted air defences, in particular with a view to intercepting drones. Last year, sources told Reuters that NATO will request Berlin to at least quadruple its air defences, ranging from systems with a longer range, such as the Patriot, to short-range systems.
