  1. Mike Johnson dismisses concern over Trump’s private meme coin dinner, says the president does ‘everything out in the open’ Mike Johnson dismisses concern over Trump’s private meme coin dinner, says the president does ‘everything out in the open’ Mike Johnson on Sunday brushed off concerns over Trump’s recent meme coin dinner. Johnson told CNN he didn’t know details about the dinner but said Trump was transparent. “He has nothing to hide, and he’s out there trying to advance America’s interests,” Johnson said. House Speaker Mike Johnson brushed off concerns on Sunday about President Donald Trump‘s private meme coin dinner, arguing that the president does “everything out in the open.” While speaking with CNN’s Jake Tapper, Johnson said he had no knowledge of the private dinner, which raised concerns from some lawmakers over conflicts of interest and whether attendees were seeking to sway Trump on cryptocurrency policy. When Johnson was asked about the lack of disclosure regarding the list of attendees at the meme coin dinner, the speaker said the president had “nothing to hide.” “President Trump is the most transparent president in the most transparent administration, probably in history,” he said. “President Trump does everything out in the open. He’s not trying to hide anything,” Johnson added. “There’s no shell companies or fake LLCs or fake family businesses. He’s putting it out there so everybody can evaluate for themselves.” Trump’s crypto ventures, including the launch of his own meme coin in January and the dinner for the coin’s top 220 investors, raised concerns from a group of Senate Democrats who have pressed for greater ethics standards, including in the recently passed GENIUS Act. Johnson played a leading role in shepherding Trump’s “one big, beautiful bill” through the House last Thursday, a huge victory for the GOP. However, the bill faces an uncertain future in the Senate, where several Republicans have expressed concerns over its effects on the federal deficit, as well as the impact of Medicaid cuts, higher state and local tax deductions, and the phasing out of clean energy tax credits. 3. Mumford & Sons provide festival finale Mumford & Sons provide festival finale Manish Pandey BBC Newsbeat, reporting from Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Liverpool Getty Images Mumford & Sons provided a rousing finale at Radio 1’s Big Weekend Mumford & Sons closed this year’s Radio 1’s Big Weekend with a thrilling set full of new and old songs. The headline act played hits such as I Will Wait and Rushmere to entertain the crowd at Sefton Park in Liverpool, complete with fireworks and confetti. Other artists on the Main Stage through the day included Tate McRae, Lola Young, Jorja Smith, Wet Leg and Haim. Speaking ahead of their performance, Mumford & Sons lead singer Marcus Mumford told BBC Newsbeat the band were “stoked to be headlining again”. He added that it had “been a while” since they played big shows, but were keen to use Big Weekend to “get back in the saddle for us and find our home again”. The group managed to squeeze a lot into the one hour slot they had, something they had thought about while preparing. “[We had to] figure out how we’re going to supply people with the essence, and the finest perfume of Mumford & Sons,” guitarist Ted Dwayne said. In the crowd, Sian was singing along and told a roving BBC Newsbeat reporter that she had seen the band a few years before with the same people she was with on Sunday. “It’s a full-circle moment,” she said. Another fan, Kurtis, reacted: “Amazing, just so much fun. what a lovely way to end the weekend.” BBC/Jamie Simonds ***** headlined on the New Music Stage The day saw mixed weather at the festival site, with Tate McRae’s early high-energy performance basking in the sunshine contrasted with fans braving a heavy downpour to watch Haim later on. But many fans were not deterred by the downpours. After Haim told the crowd the band would “party harder” in the rain, Rebecca said Mumford & Sons “would be just as good in the rain as well”. Her friend Izzy adds: “It’s a good atmosphere – I feel emotional.” Elsewhere, the New Music Stage was headlined by *****, formerly of Little Mix, and also saw performances from South Arcade, Joy Crookes, Flo and Self Esteem. ***** told Newsbeat she was feeling “a little bit nervous” ahead of her set, because it was her “first big solo performance”. Admitting she’s had “tunnel vision” about the set, fans in the New Music Tent were cheering her on with every song. Getty Images Tate McRae kicked off Sunday on the Main Stage Over the three days, an estimated 100,000 music fans enjoy around 100 performances across four stages. Tom Grennan thrilled on Friday with surprise acts including Ella Henderson, Mel C, The Zutons and KSI. The Higher singer described “headlining the biggest weekend of the summer” as “pretty crazy”. He followed The Wombats, Natasha Bedingfield, James Hype and Biffy Clyro, who also performed on the Main Stage. Saturday saw a nervous Sam Fender lead the crowd in singing hits Seventeen Going Under and Hypersonic Missiles. Before that, fans saw Tom Odell, Sugababes, Myles Smith, Blossoms and Wolf Alice on the Main Stage. But the highlight for many was the surprise set by Ed Sheeran on the New Music Stage, announced just a few hours before it took place on Saturday. The Shape of You singer said he chose that stage because he’d “never played it before” and felt the tent had “the best energy”. You can catch highlights of Radio 1’s Big Weekend on BBC iPlayer. 5. At 21 stone, I promoted body positivity. I should have been honest about how I felt At 21 stone, I promoted body positivity. I should have been honest about how I felt Sophie Goodman was always known as “the ******* girl” among her group of friends at school in Manchester. It never stopped her from living a full and exciting life; she always appeared outwardly happy, and made friends easily. “While I was heavier, I still did everything I wanted to do – I went travelling, I dated gorgeous guys, saw all my favourite bands in concert,” says Goodman. “I was determined to never let anything stop me. I always shared pictures of myself living my life and encouraged everyone to love themselves and their bodies, regardless of what they looked like. I should have been more honest about how I was feeling about myself.” It was Goodman’s penchant for binge eating that saw her weight consistently creep up, and at 23, she weighed nearly 21 stone. Under the glossy veneer of happiness and her promotion of self-confidence, Goodman’s life was marred with moments where she would feel shame: the time she had to get off a roller coaster as she was too large for the safety bar to close, or how she would hide her seat belt extenders under her stomach on flights. ‘I would cry and cry about my body’ “It wasn’t every night, but there were times where it would all just hit me and I would cry and cry and cry about my body,” Goodman, now 29, explains. “I didn’t like the way I looked, and I didn’t like the way I felt about myself. “I felt as if I was a thinner girl trapped in a larger girl’s body. I desperately wanted to lose weight, but didn’t know what to do, which is when I started to look into surgical intervention. “I’m not going to lie and pretend I don’t feel so much better about myself now I’ve lost weight. I want to encourage others to love their bodies enough to make a healthy change.” There are certainly plenty of people who need that encouragement: according to a study by Imperial College London, two thirds of *** adults are overweight, with obesity costing the NHS more than £6 billion a year. But it’s not always the case that weight loss is welcomed, particularly in some digital spheres. Some factions of the body positivity movement, which looks to celebrate curves and body shapes previously derided as merely being “overweight”, are now critical towards influencers who have chosen to shed the pounds. For body-positive activist and journalist Gina Tonic, a plus-size model or influencer losing weight can almost seem like a personal slight to their followers who may also be *******. ‘I felt as if I was a thinner girl trapped in a larger girl’s body,’ admits Goodman “There are unspoken feelings of treachery between people who are **** and those who used to be ****,” she writes in her memoir, Greedy Guts. “Watching those conceding to societal pressure can feel like a slap to the face.” Lizzo, once at the forefront of the body positivity movement for celebrating her ******* frame, has faced backlash from some former fans after she chose to start losing weight. While her approach was slow burn (in an interview with The New York Times, the singer asserted that she was dropping the pounds in a gradual manner, and claims to have lost weight through Pilates and being in a calorie deficit), there is now an increasing number of weight loss drugs readily available for those able to afford them. Ozempic has gained popularity in the United States, and Wegovy is available in the *** for weight management. Similarly, not everyone was pleased for Goodman as she went through her weight loss journey, which she has posted about candidly on Instagram. Her content has sometimes received a string of negative commentary from some of her 34,000 followers. ‘I’m totally unapologetic for having surgery’ “I would get remarks that would become quite ******,” she explains. “People would say I’ve ‘cheated’, or that I’ve ‘taken the easy way out’. But I am totally unapologetic for having surgery, and wish I’d done it years ago. Though she had previously tried dieting and weight loss regimens such as Slimming World, nothing seemed to lead to long-term weight loss for Goodman. It was a family friend who recommended she try gastric sleeve surgery – a procedure in which a large part of the stomach is removed in order to create a tube-like structure with a smaller capacity. With the procedure being funded by her parents, Goodman went under the knife, and five years later she has lost more than eight stone. She has also earned the money to pay her parents back. “It blows my mind that people can’t just be happy for people. If you see someone go from 300lb to 170lb and they’re living a healthier life, why would you not just be happy for that person?” ********* influencer Olivia Messina, who has more than 400,000 followers on Instagram, is another who has faced criticism for weight loss. Messina weighed more than 23 stone when at her heaviest, and always encouraged her followers to love their curves and embrace the bodies they were in – but she then started facing a number of health issues that were detrimental to her work as a plus-size model for a fashion brand. “I found myself getting so tired so quickly,” she explains over Zoom from Toronto. “I have the skin condition hidradenitis suppurativa, which causes lumps and scarring all over my skin, and it just kept getting worse.” Beforehand, Messina would “impulse-eat”, loading up on carb-heavy food her body fancied rather than what it really needed. She also found herself relying on takeaways, frequently ordering dinner and snacks on Deliveroo and Uber Eats and eating large portions quickly. Not everyone was pleased for Goodman as she went through her weight loss journey, with some of her followers leaving negative comments on her posts “I was fed up of constantly feeling exhausted, and having to deal with the scars all across my body,” she continues. “I was also struggling with poor mental health, with symptoms of depression and anxiety. “My doctor recommended I tried eating a little healthier and work out more to see if that would help, and as I lost weight, my skin condition completely cleared up. Exercise became an outlet that helped me, and I decided to encourage others into starting their own fitness journey. I regret not doing it sooner.” After more than a year of starting a gym routine, deleting takeaway apps and batch-cooking high-protein meals from scratch, Messina has lost more than 5 stone. To start with, she admits she did feel a little “hypocritical” at losing weight after building such a following for her fuller figure – and she received some comments from followers urging her not to get “too thin”. ‘I’ve got the body I always dreamt of’ “I think where body positivity goes wrong is how it tells you to love yourself no matter what,” Messina continues. “I support body autonomy. I’m an advocate for individuals choosing what’s right for them, and having the freedom to do what you want with your appearance. “I’m very open about how weight loss has improved how I feel about myself and want my followers to understand the benefits of exercise that I’ve seen.” Messina now feels healthier and happier with her body having lost weight: “I used to be quite round, and now I have a more defined waist. I feel more feminine now.” Goodman feels the same. While she always enjoyed team sports, she now has a regular gym routine and has discovered her love for running – she regularly completes 5km runs and now has her sights set on training for a marathon. Goodman’s weight loss has necessitated a new wardrobe and she now has a regular gym routine – Paul Cooper “I regret not being more clued up on nutrition and not knowing how to look after my body properly when I was younger,” she says. “I understand there may be contention between being body-positive and then going on to lose weight, but it was so important for me to be honest about how I felt in myself.” Goodman’s weight loss has now opened further opportunities for her, seeing her working with clothing brand Gymshark, as well as moderating Gastric Gossip, a digital community for people who have undergone weight loss surgery. Her substantial weight loss has now seen her undergo a tummy tuck, where she had one stone of loose skin removed from her stomach. “The first time I looked in the mirror after the surgery, I cried,” she says. “It was the first time I recognised myself as the girl I wanted to be. I’ve got the body I always dreamt of. “I am so unapologetic about my journey. This is what has worked for me. There’s always the fear that people would call me out about not being faithful towards being body-positive. And I always respond: I loved myself enough to do something that would make me love myself even more.” Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism. 7. Sabalenka’s first-day warning as Canada teen wows Paris Sabalenka’s first-day warning as Canada teen wows Paris Roland Garros has embraced a new young star in the shape of 18-year-old ********* comet Victoria Mboko on the day world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka launched her French Open title bid in emphatic style. There was a crushing inevitability about the way Sabalenka demolished Russian Kamilla Rakhimova 6-1 6-0 in just an hour on Court Philippe Chatrier on opening Sunday but much more uncertainty about how Mboko, who’d stormed through qualifying without dropping a set, might fare on her grand slam debut. It turned out she was as good as the notices had promised. Mboku, whose parents fled to Canada to escape the Mobutu regime in the Democratic Republic of Congo before she was born, looked nerveless in her 6-1 7-6 (7-4) win over New Zealander Lulu Sun, who had enjoyed her own breakthrough at Wimbledon last year. The world No.333 at the start of 2025, Mboko’s up to 120 and rising, having taken luminaries like Coco Gauff and Paula Badosa to three sets this season already. “I didn’t expect the whole thing, honestly,” Mboko, who’ll meet ******* No.1 Eva Lys in the second round, told reporters. “I mean, even to be here and playing even the quallies, I was so excited to be in a grand slam for the first ever time. .”It’s honestly kind of a surprise. I mean, now ‘m here, I feel like I can do something with it and make the most of it,” Last year’s finalist Jasmine Paolini, fresh from her Italian Open triumph, had a bit of a rude shock when China’s Yue Yuan took the second set of their battle, but one of the tournament favourites responded to prevail 6-1 4-6 6-3. The last time Zheng Qinwen had been at Roland Garros, she was having a singles gold medal draped round her neck at the Olympics, and the ever-improving *********** Open finalist looks in the mood for more glory as she made light work of a tough opener against former finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, prevailing 6-4 6-3. Eleventh seed Diana Shnaider had a worrying moment when she injured her ankle and sat on the court sobbing, but she battled through the problem to defeat Ukrainian qualifier Anastasiya Soboleva 7-6 (7-3) 6-2. Perhaps the most high-profile victim of the day was double Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova, who secured her first win since her maternity break at the Italian Open but couldn’t get over Swiss Viktorija Golubic, who won 3-6 6-0 6-4. 8. Wall Street braces for more bond market turmoil as Trump tax bill stirs up deficit concerns Wall Street braces for more bond market turmoil as Trump tax bill stirs up deficit concerns The bond market is once again flashing warning signs. Long-term Treasury yields surged this week as investors grew increasingly uneasy about the ballooning US deficit and the fiscal outlook tied to President Trump’s proposed tax legislation. The sell-off in bonds, typically a safe haven in uncertain times, runs counter to traditional flight-to-safety behavior and has stoked fears of a broader “sell America” trade taking hold across global markets. “Clearly, the market is very focused on two key things: the tariff news and this policy framework of debt and deficits with interest rates,” WisdomTree Global chief investment officer Jeremy Schwartz told Yahoo Finance on Thursday. “If interest rates blow out because there’s fear about the deficit [and] we don’t actually bring down spending … that’s one of the [key] downside risks.” While ballooning deficits have long been a concern, the latest wave of investor unease reflects a collision of both new and familiar threats, with fiscal fears, stubborn inflation, and political uncertainty top of mind. At the center of it all is Trump’s newly advanced tax bill, which cleared the House this week and is now headed to the Senate. “We have an unsustainable fiscal situation that is leading to very challenging dynamics in the bond markets where we are having to pay higher interest rates to service our debts,” Shai Akabas, director of economic policy at the Bipartisan Policy Center, told Yahoo Finance on Friday. “That ultimately is leading to higher interest rates across the economy and feeding the inflation that we’ve seen in past years, and that we might continue to see from the tariff dynamic that’s going on.” The legislation proposes sweeping cuts to individual and corporate tax rates and is projected to add $4 trillion to the national debt over the next decade. Despite its scale, the bill lacks swift and substantial spending cuts, fueling investor anxiety over the US’s already fragile fiscal situation. “The House bill is probably the floor for what deficits look like,” Deutsche Bank senior US economist Brett Ryan said. “The Senate is going to have its say, and that’s probably going to mean even less in terms of spending cuts.” Ryan noted that while the bill claims over $1 trillion in savings, most of that is backloaded beyond the current presidential term. “Will it ever happen?” he asked, casting doubt on whether the proposed fiscal tightening will materialize. Read more: What are bonds, and how do you invest in them? Story Continues The bond market’s reaction to the legislation has been swift. The 30-year Treasury yield (^TYX) surged as high as 5.15% this week, marking its biggest intraday move since 2023 and approaching closing levels not seen since 2007. These moves were driven not only by renewed fiscal concerns at home but also by a weak Treasury auction and escalating fiscal turmoil in Japan. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s warning on the country’s finances triggered a bond sell-off and stoked global fears about waning demand for US Treasurys. “The long end of the curve, there’s a tremendous amount of uncertainty,” Asterozoa Capital chief investment officer Joe Hegener said on Friday, describing recent market moves as a “material risk” to stocks and the broader US economy. “We’re starting to see investors get a little spooked,” he continued. “What’s going on in Japan and abroad is only exacerbating that risk.” While short-term yields have stayed relatively anchored amid expectations that the Fed will hold interest rates steady, longer-term yields have climbed more sharply as investors demand greater compensation for mounting fiscal and policy uncertainties. Heather Boushey, who served on President Joe Biden’s Council of Economic Advisors, said the recent surge in yields may signal mounting fears of stagflation and deeper economic strain. “There is not good news here,” she said, adding that the bond market’s message is clear: “Let’s not go down this path.” Bond investors have grown increasingly uneasy about the ballooning US deficit and the fiscal outlook tied to President Trump’s proposed tax bill. Northland Shopping Centre was sent into lockdown at about 2.30pm Sunday, after reports of up to 10 people fighting, some armed with knives and machetes. Camera IconA brawl broke out at Northland Shopping Centre. PictureL X Credit: X A 20-year-old man was seriously injured in the incident and taken to hospital, where he remains in a stable condition. “Two other males, one with injuries, have since self-presented to hospital,” a Victoria Police statement read. A 16-year-old Darebin boy and a 15-year-old Melton boy were arrested at the scene. They have both since been charged with affray, intentionally cause injury, possess controlled weapon and use controlled weapon. The two teenagers have been remanded to appear at a children’s court at a later date. Camera IconTwo teenagers have been arrested and charged. NewsWire / Josie Hayden Credit: News Corp Australia The incident sparked chaos at the shopping centre, with customers hiding inside shops while police stormed the centre. While investigations are ongoing, police believe the fight was targeted and those involved were known to each other. Victoria Police Superintendent Kelly Lawson told the Herald Sun the brawl was “not a random attack” and was possibly intended as “an act of retaliation”. “(This was) a fight between two rival gangs occurred in the food court,” she said. “It was a planned event, they had prearranged to meet here. “It’s happened in a busy shopping centre, so there clearly was a risk to the public, there’s always a risk to the public.” Camera IconThe entire shopping centre was plunged into lockdown. NewsWire / Josie Hayden Credit: News Corp Australia Premier Jacinta Allan condemned the “targeted” incident, labelling it as “appalling”. “In Victoria, community safety comes first,” she said in a statement. 14. U.S. citizen arrested after he allegedly planned to bomb office of U.S. Embassy in Israel U.S. citizen arrested after he allegedly planned to bomb office of U.S. Embassy in Israel A man was arrested at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York on Sunday following an alleged attempt to firebomb a branch office of the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel, the Justice Department said in a statement. The man, named Joseph Neumeyer, is a dual American and ******* citizen and was detained in Israel on May 19 after a hostile confrontation in which Neumeyer ***** on a security guard in front of the office earlier that day, according to the Justice Department. The guard tried and failed to detain Neumeyer, who ditched the backpack he was carrying to break free, the statement said. A search of the backpack he left behind at the embassy after the confrontation “revealed three rudimentary improvised incendiary devices commonly known as Molotov cocktails,” the statement added. Officials were able to track Neumeyer to his hotel, where he was arrested. The Justice Department also said that Neumeyer, 28, posted the following on social media: “Join me as I burn down the embassy in Tel Aviv. Death to America, death to Americans, and f— the west.” He also made threats on social media to assassinate President Donald Trump, the statement added. Neumeyer claims in his social media profiles, verified by NBC News, that he is the founder and CEO of a company called Atlas Light Company. It was not immediately clear what the company does, and Neumeyer claims to have founded a number of startups. Recent postings on Facebook suggest discontent with the West, specifically with the U.S. and President Trump. Neumeyer arrived in Israel last month, but didn’t head to the U.S. Embassy in Tel Aviv until May 19, the Justice Department said. It was not clear where in the country he was staying or what he was doing there prior to last week. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from NBC News. “The Department will not tolerate such violence and will prosecute this defendant to the fullest extent of the law,” U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement after Israel turned Neumeyer over to the U.S. on Sunday. FBI Director Kash Patel added in a statement, “This despicable and violent behavior will not be tolerated at home or abroad, and the FBI, working with our partners, will bring him to face justice for his dangerous actions.” Neumeyer, who was deported to the U.S. by Israeli authorities, could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted. His arrest comes several days after two staffers who worked at the Israeli Embassy in Washington were killed leaving an event at the Capital Jewish Museum. The suspect in that shooting, Elias Rodriguez, was later charged with two counts of first-degree *******. According to videos taken at the scene and posted to social media, Rodriguez shouted “Free, free Palestine” following his arrest. Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke the day after the shooting, with Netanyahu condemning the act as a “horrifying antisemitic *******.” This article was originally published on NBCNews.com Source link #U.S #citizen #arrested #allegedly #planned #bomb #office #U.S #Embassy #Israel Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]

  19. BBC returns to Gaza baby left hungry by Israeli blockade BBC returns to Gaza baby left hungry by Israeli blockade Fergal Keane BBC News, Jerusalem Warning: Upsetting content There is no excitement as the camera passes. The children barely glance. What can surprise a child who lives among the dead, the dying, the waiting to die? Hunger has worn them down. They wait in queues for scant rations or for none at all. They have grown used to my colleague and his camera, filming for the BBC. He witnesses their hunger, their dying, and to the gentle wrapping of their bodies – or fragments of their bodies – in white shrouds upon which their names, if known, are written. For 19 months of war, and now under a renewed Israeli offensive, this local cameraman – who I do not name, for his safety - has listened to the anguished cries of the survivors in hospital courtyards. His physical distance is respectful, but they are on his mind, day and night. He is one of them, trapped in the same claustrophobic hell. This morning he is setting out to find Siwar Ashour, a five-month-old girl whose emaciated frame and exhausted cry at Nasser hospital in Khan Younis affected him so much, when he was filming there earlier this month, that he wrote to tell me something had broken inside him. She weighed just over 2kg (4lb 6oz). A baby girl of five months should be about 6kg or over. Baby Siwar needs a special milk formula because of an allergic reaction Siwar has since been discharged and is now at home,  my colleague has heard. That is what brings him to the street of pulverised houses and makeshift shelters of canvas and corrugated iron. He conducts his search in difficult circumstances. A few days ago I messaged to ask how he was doing. “I am not okay,” he replied. “Just a short while ago, the Israeli army announced the evacuation of most areas of Khan Younis… We don’t know what to do – there is no safe place to go. “Al-Mawasi is extremely overcrowded with displaced people. We are lost and have no idea what the right decision is at this moment.” He finds a one-bedroom shack, the entrance formed of a floral patterned, grey and ****** curtain. Inside there are three mattresses, part of a chest of drawers, and a mirror which reflects sunlight across the floor in front of Siwar, her mother Najwa and her grandmother, Reem. Siwar’s mother Najwa and grandmother Reem are all struggling with few supplies Siwar is quiet, held secure by the protective presence of the two women. The baby cannot absorb regular milk formula because of a severe allergic reaction. Under the conditions of war and an Israeli blockade on aid arrivals, there is a severe shortage of the formula she needs. Najwa, 23, explains that her condition stabilised when she was in Nasser hospital, so doctors discharged her with a can of baby formula several days ago. Now at home, she says the baby’s weight has started to slip again. “The doctors told me that Siwar improved and is better than before, but I think that she is still skinny and hasn’t improved much. They found her only one can of milk, and it [has] started running out.” Flies dance in front of Siwar’s face. “The situation is very dire,” says Najwa, “the insects come at her, I have to cover her with a scarf so nothing touches her”. Siwar has lived with the sound of war since last November when she was born. The artillery, the rockets, falling bombs – distant and near. The gunfire, the blades of Israeli drones whirring overhead. Najwa explains: “She understands these things. The sound of the tanks, warplanes, and rockets are so loud and they are close to us. When Siwar hears these sounds, she gets startled and cries. If she is sleeping, she wakes up startled and crying.” Doctors in Gaza say many young mothers report being unable to breastfeed their babies due to lack of nutrition. The pressing problem is food and clean water. Najwa was malnourished herself when Siwar was born. She and her mother Reem still find it difficult to get anything to eat themselves. It is the struggle of every waking hour. “In our case, we can’t provide milk or diapers because of the prices and the border closure.” On 22 May Israeli military body Cogat said there was no food shortage in Gaza. It said “significant quantities of baby food and flour for bakeries” had been brought into the enclave in recent days. Aid agencies have spoken out about food shortages in Gaza The agency has repeatedly insisted that ****** steals aid, while the Israeli government says the war will continue until ****** is destroyed and the Israeli hostages held in Gaza are released. According to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, 20 hostages seized by ****** in the 7 October 2023 attacks are believed to be alive and up to 30 others dead. Aid agencies, the United Nations and many foreign governments, including Britain, reject Cogat’s comment that there is no food shortage. US President Donald Trump has also spoken of people “starving” in Gaza. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres described the amount of aid Israel has allowed into Gaza as “a teaspoon”. He said Palestinians were “enduring what may be the cruellest phase of this cruel conflict” with restricted supplies of fuel, shelter, cooking gas and water purification supplies. According to the UN 80% of Gaza is now either designated as an Israeli militarised zone or a place where people have been ordered to leave. The denials, the expressions of concern, the condemnations and the moments which seemed like turning points have come and gone throughout this war. The sole constant is the suffering of Gaza’s 2.1 million people, like Najwa and her daughter Siwar. “One does not think about the future or the past,” Najwa says. There is only the present moment and how to survive it. With additional reporting by Malak Hassouneh, Alice Doyard and Nik Millard. 20. Wall St falls as Trump tariff threats spark uncertainty Wall St falls as Trump tariff threats spark uncertainty US stocks have fallen, notching a weekly loss, after President Donald Trump recommended 50 per cent tariffs on European goods, reopening a new front in global trade tensions and unleashing a fresh wave of market uncertainty. All three main Wall Street indexes pared early losses but each still ended lower and shed more than 2.0 per cent for the week. Technology, communication services and consumer discretionary stocks were the biggest losers of the S&P 500’s 11 sub-sectors. Utilities, consumer staples and energy stocks gained. Apple touched a two-week low and finished down 3.0 per cent after Trump warned the iPhone-maker it could face potential 25 per cent tariffs on phones sold to US customers but not manufactured in the country. Treasury yields eased from multi-month highs, falling 4.4 basis points to 4.509 per cent for the benchmark US 10-year note. “If I were to put a headline on today’s story, it would be ‘Here We Go Again!’,” said James St Aubin, chief investment officer at Ocean Park Asset Management in Santa Monica, California. “This is Trump turning on the temperature on the tariff conversation with the EU and Apple. The markets were hoping that the worst was behind us when it comes to the tariff rhetoric. But in reality, there’s still some smoldering embers when it comes to the tariff talk,” St Aubin added. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 256.02 points, or 0.61 per cent, to 41,603.07, the S&P 500 lost 39.19 points, or 0.67 per cent, to 5,802.82 and the Nasdaq Composite lost 188.53 points, or 1.00 per cent, to 18,737.21. For the week, the Dow lost 2.47 per cent, the S&P 500 fell 2.61 per cent, and the Nasdaq shed 2.48 per cent. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Trump did not believe the EU’s trade offers were of sufficient quality. He also said he hoped the threat of fresh tariffs would “light a fire under the EU” in negotiations. Most megacap and growth stocks fell including Amazon, Nvidia and Meta Platforms – which all lost more than 1.0 per cent. Tesla ended down 0.5 per cent. The CBOE Volatility Index, Wall Street’s “fear gauge,” hit a more than two-week high and finished up 10 per cent. Semiconductor stocks dropped 1.5 per cent. Deckers Outdoor slumped nearly 20 per cent after the maker of UGG boots forecast first-quarter net sales below estimates and said it would not provide annual targets due to tariff-led macroeconomic uncertainty. Sportswear maker Nike dropped 2.1 per cent. Volume on US exchanges was 17.67 billion shares compared with the 17.73 billion average for the full session over the last 20 trading days. 21. Trump’s war the judiciary could see “catastrophic end” Trump’s war the judiciary could see “catastrophic end” The Trump administration’s war on the rule of law is most evident in its relentless attacks on American judges who rule against the former president’s policies. Attorney General Pam Bondi recently escalated that rhetoric, calling these judges “deranged”—a remark that former federal judge J. Michael Luttig found especially alarming. “The judges are not deranged, Pam Bondi. They are simply enforcing their oath to the Constitution of the United States—the same oath that you, Madam Attorney General, took yourself.” In this timely and urgent interview, the former federal judge warns, “I don’t know where this ends… but it appears that, in this moment, the President intends to prosecute this war against the federal judiciary–and the rule of law– to its catastrophic end.” Source link #Trumps #war #judiciary #catastrophic Pelican News View the full article at [Hidden Content]
  22. Here’s what we know about the 5 Android XR smart glasses currently in development Here’s what we know about the 5 Android XR smart glasses currently in development Android XR has arrived, but Google isn’t going it alone – far from it. Instead, Google is teaming up with a slew of partners who will launch Android XR glasses and headsets. This is an exact match to how it handles Android on smartphones, though at the time of writing, it has yet to announce some kind of in-house Google Pixel Glasses. There are still plenty of unknown Android XR details, but here’s everything we know about the five brands set to make smart glasses with Google, as well as my best guesses at the sort of glasses they’ll make based on what’s been announced and what these companies have made before. You may like 1. Samsung smart glasses (Image credit: Philip Berne / Future) Ignoring Qualcomm, Samsung looks to be Google’s closest Android XR collaborator. In terms of physical hardware, it’s also the only device we’ve seen in action, with Google execs taking to the stage at Google I/O and previously at a TED talk to showcase Samsung’s prototype specs. Samsung currently defines what XR is. That is, it’s fairly slim, it packs a camera for snapping photos and providing the AI with visual input, and it offers a screen so the glasses can share info with you visually and not just sonically (which is what Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses are currently limited to). There’s no word on a release date for this specs, but they’re rumored for a 2026 launch. 2. Xreal’s ‘Project Aura’ (Image credit: Xreal) Next up is Xreal, the maker of the Xreal One glasses, which (at the time of writing) top our picks of the best smart glasses. Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more. It is also making Android XR glasses, currently known as Project Aura. They look a lot like a pair of Xreal One glasses with a built-in camera. They will even be tethered rather than wireless (which could help keep cost and weight down somewhat) to match Xreal’s usual XR glasses approach. Again, we’ve got no word on when they might launch, but given Xreal has shown us an image of Project Aura (something which can’t be said for most entries on this list), we’re hoping the specs are coming sooner rather than later. 3. Warby Parker smart specs (Image credit: Warby Parker) Warby Parker offers a range of eyeglasses and sunglasses, and it’s one of three fashion brands Google says it’s working with on Android XR devices. Like every entry on this list, it hasn’t given us a release date for its specs yet, but it has released an image of its smart glasses (which you can see above). The sleek, standard-looking shape of its smart glasses captures precisely what Warby Parker’s glasses style is. It won’t surprise you aesthetically, but its frames have a reliable, all-day look which is perfect for smart glasses you’ll always want to wear. Given that Warby Parker offers a range of lens types, including prescription lenses, we expect its smart glasses to follow this trend, though they might not feature an in-lens display at first. Just like the other fashion-first brands on this list we’re about to dive into, I expect they’ll start with simple AI glasses (effectively Gemini-based versions of the existing Ray-Ban Meta), which should be cheaper and easier to produce than full-on AR glasses, which seems to be Samsung’s primary goal. 4. Gentle Monster Android XR glasses (Image credit: Google) If Warby Parker sits at the more traditional end of the glasses spectrum, Gentle Monster is strutting raucously at the other. They do sell those more normal-looking glasses, but they also have head-turning designs embellished with jewels or with bold form factors. Gentle Monster has yet to showcase its smart glasses, but my hope is it’s one of these weirder designs that gets the Android XR treatment, something that really stands out against the Ray-Ban meta glasses rather than trying to mimic them. Despite my wishes, I expect that won’t be the case for several reasons, not least of which is the need for these smart glasses to appeal to a wide audience while in their infancy. That’s backed up by Gentle Monster’s previous smart eyewear collab with Huawei, which were more standard-looking frames enhanced by in-built speakers for music and calls. 5. Kering Eyewear x Android XR (Image credit: Kering) Lastly, we have Kering Eyewear, the most recent addition to the Android XR family. When Google first announced its collaboration with four brands, we were only aware of four, but in the days since, Kering Eyewear has announced its smart glasses plans. We have yet to see what specs it’s working on, but based on its previous collaborations with Gucci, Balenciaga, McQueen, and others, we’re expecting a heightened traditional design. It’s not quite as out there as some of Gentle Monster’s approaches to glasses, but it’s more striking than the frames you’d see from Warby Parker. 24. Super Rugby Pacific: Western Force coach Simon Cron crestfallen after promising season ends on sour note Super Rugby Pacific: Western Force coach Simon Cron crestfallen after promising season ends on sour note Western Force coach Simon Cron says a combination of a lack of high-intensity training, fatigue, injuries and jet lag contributed to a six-game winless run to end their season which ruined their final hopes. When the Force beat the Highlanders on April 5 to move into fourth spot, a first Super Rugby Pacific finals berth beckoned; instead the Force are now at risk of the wooden spoon after their super-point 22-17 loss to the Waratahs. Darby Lancaster’s spectacular 90th minute try after the sides could not be separated at the end of regulation gave the visitors a win to keep their own season alive while condemn the Force to a fifth loss in a row. After their first bye, the Force failed to win and only picked up two points the rest of the season, coming in their first game post-break in a 17-17 super point draw with the Hurricanes. While they had chances to beat the Waratahs, Cron conceded they were their own worst enemies and had made poor decisions. Part of the reason for those errors was a lack of sharpness. “There’s a few things tout of our control a little bit in that last six game block. The S&C (strength and conditioning) department was telling me,we probably trained them six times in six weeks at any sort of intensity,” he said. “That makes makes it more challenging as a coach, because you like to coach when you’re on field but unfortunately, that’s just the way the cookie crumbled this year with what we were doing.” Injuries and a heavy travel schedule contributed to the Force’s lack of high-intensity training in the second half of the season. A swell of injuries to first-team players and key rotational pieces blighted the Force in the run home; starters Marley Pearce, Vaiolini Ekuasi and Divad Palu all missed long stretches through injury. Prop Pearce’s shoulder issue was compounded by starting-calibre front-rowers Harry Hoopert and Harry Johnson-Holmes both tearing ACLs before the season even began. Camera IconHarry Potter. Credit: Travis Hayto/Getty Images In recent weeks, star flanker Carlo Tizzano and important back-rower Nick Champion de Crespigny also missed time, while Wallabies duo Dylan Pietsch and Brandon Paenga-Amosa were restricted to seven games each. “You’re going to lose players at Super Rugby. It’s just when we lose that many, we’ve just got to try and continue to build the depth behind that so that we don’t get hunting worldwide,” Cron said. The Force’s second bye of the season comes next week, in the final league round of the season — something Cron has repeatedly complained about after his side travelled more than 49,000km in the air this season. “Funnily enough, this is the boys’ bye week, which lines up nicely with our season, giving the highest-travelled team a bye at the end,” Cron said. Camera IconJamie Anderson in action. Credit: Travis Hayto/Getty Images But both Cron and captain Jeremy Williams conceded they butchered chances against the Waratahs and their decision-making eluded them. “The big area of growth for us is our very brains in key moments, we sometimes make it a bit hard for ourselves,” Cron said. “There are probably moments in the game I’d like over, potentially around those penalties and decisions to go to the corner; in hindsight now I would have loved to go to the points, so that’s hurting me a fair bit,” Williams said. 25. China watching Russia-Ukraine conflict to gauge moves on Taiwan China watching Russia-Ukraine conflict to gauge moves on Taiwan Former Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman warned on Sunday that China’s leaders are using the international response to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine to gauge its future treatment toward Taiwan. “China watches what’s happening with Russia and Ukraine,” Sherman, who worked in the Clinton, Obama and Biden administrations, told NewsNation’s Chris Stirewalt. The Trump administration issued a warning to China last month after the country conducted large-scale military drills in the waters and airspace around Taiwan without prior notice. China views Taiwan as its territory and has threatened to take the independently governed island by military force, but the U.S. views Taiwan as a strategic partner, and many American tech companies rely on semiconductors made there. “If Russia can invade a sovereign country and take all of Ukraine or portions of Ukraine, and nobody really stands in the way, then China imagines it can take Taiwan and all of the advanced semiconductors that are made there, and nobody will blink an eye,” Sherman told Stirewalt. “And that is a danger to us.” Despite pressure from the Trump administration to strike a peace pact, the Russia-Ukraine war has carried on for more than three years since Russia invaded its Eastern European neighbor. Russia similarly claims ownership over independent Ukrainian territory. The two sides hashed out a prisoner exchange agreement in Turkey earlier this month and said talks would continue on a broader peace deal, but Russia launched drone and missile strikes against Ukraine again on Sunday amid the multiday arrangement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the U.S., Europe and “all those around the world who seek peace” on Sunday to forcefully respond to Russia’s attacks and put more pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
